SYDNEY

Welcome to summer in Sydney! February is one of the best months to visit our harbour city, with warm weather, outdoor events and rooftop bars to be enjoyed. This month we are excited about the Lunar New Year Festival, which will be the largest outside of Asia and celebrate Sydney’s cultural communities (page 8). We also can’t wait to see the Puccini opera “Turandot” at the Sydney Opera House (page 22) and celebrate Sydney’s LGBTQI community at the annual Mardi Gras (page 20). As always, we have plenty of ideas for where to shop, dine and explore in Sydney, from vegan hotspots (page 30) to boutiques in trendy Paddington (page 24). We hope you enjoy your stay here!

Q: Describe your perfect day in Sydney

A: Even as a local, driving or touring the South Coast is a special experience. Within an hour you could be at the Royal National Park. Enjoy a spot of lunch or co ee at Audle Dance Hall Café, followed by a swim at the stunning Wattamolla watering hole and beach. Q: What is your favourite walk for stunning views of Sydney?

Q: With around 100 beaches in Sydney, which is the best?

A: My personal favourite walk is the Taronga Zoo to Balmoral Beach walk. Take the 12-minute ferry ride to the zoo (visit the zoo if you have time). Enjoy the 6.5 km walk which o ers some of the most spectacular views of Sydney Harbour, as well as fascinating wildlife and historic monuments. This walk is 2-3 hours in length.

A: My personal favourite is Camp Cove, a small beach near South Head. Catch a ferry or private water taxi to Watsons Bay and enjoy a short walk to Sydney’s best inner harbour beach, free of the large volume of day trippers found at some higher pro le alternatives.

Q: What’s a great spot for a romantic Valentine’s date?

Q: Do you have any tips for celebrating Chinese New Year?

A: My recommendation would be to charter a boat on Sydney Harbour for an hour or two and be dropped at a waterside restaurant such as Bennelong at the Sydney pera ouse or Aria at Circular Quay, two iconic dining institutions.Other alternatives are a picnic at Shark or Clark islands in the middle of Sydney Harbour, or visiting the St.George penAir cinema at the Royal Botanical Gardens.

A: 2019 is the Year of the Pig. Explore the 13 Lunar Lanterns at Circular Quay during the Sydney Lunar Festi al. After isiting the lanterns a new year dinner at the modern Mr Wong’s is not to be missed, or alternatively, for traditional Cantonese, Golden Century. The Chinese New Year festival gets bigger every year and o ers so much ariet . There is something for everyone.

Sydney Lunar Festival

THE BIGGEST CELEBRATION of Lunar New Year outside of Asia draws from Sydney’s cultural communities with singing, dancing, street performances and even a group of roving pigs. From 1-10 February, Sydney lights up with Year of the Pig celebrations, showcasing the food, art and cultural traditions from the local Chinese, Korean, Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese, Indonesian and Malaysian communities to celebrate the city’s diversity. A centrepiece of this year’s Sydney Lunar Festival is an outdoor stage at the Overseas Passenger Terminal which will showcase dance groups, stories, martial arts and music from 1-3 February. Watch out for the 15 pigs roaming through the crowds spreading good luck and wishes for prosperity. Visitors and locals alike can enjoy the Nusantara Sydney Dance troupe from the Indonesian community,

who will be performing the Betawi Mask dance, a theatrical performance of Betawi people in Jakarta blending music, dance and singing. The Chinese community will be represented by the Hills Chinese Women’s Association, who will tell a story though a fan dance, with performers wearing traditional ‘qipao’ dresses. Children from the Fairfield Vietnamese community will be performing the ‘Loving Vietnamese Lantern dance’ - “Yêu cây đèn cù”, which celebrates the joyful start of a new year and ends with the release of the lanterns into the air. Sydney’s Japanese community is represented by the Soran Dance Troupe, performing the Soran Bushi folk dance from northern Japan, while drummers from the Korean community will perform the Arang Go-Go Jang-gu, a traditional Korean rhythm played on the jang-gu –

The popular Lunar Lanterns return with a new Pig lantern on the western boardwalk of the Sydney Opera House. Stroll around the foreshore to discover all 13 lanterns that light up Circular Quay, including the new tower of monkeys, ox and flock of sheep. Eat your way through the Lunar Festival at one of many foodie events across the city. The Rocks Lunar Markets (1-3 February and 8-10 February) will feature Asian street food as well as arts, crafts and lion dance performances, while The Calyx in the Royal Botanic Gardens will host a dumpling tasting menu. Very Vegan Go green this month and try one of these vegan hotspots in Sydney. By Christine Knight VEGAN ISN’T THE DIRTY WORD it used to be. With Australia as the third fastest growing vegan market in the world, it’s not surprising to find plant-based restaurants popping up all over Sydney to meet the growing demand. We’ve eaten our way around the suburbs of Sydney to find seven of the hottest vegan spots that we know you’ll love.

SYDNEY VEGAN MARKET On the third Sunday of every month, head to The Entertainment Quarter

to enjoy a plethora of vegan delights at Sydney Vegan Market. You’ll find not just vegan treats, but also crueltyfree homewares and fashion. The market is presented by Vegan NSW and runs from 9am to 5pm so you can make a day of it with local musicians performing and a kids’ area with face painting and games. The Entertainment Quarter, 122 Lang Road, Moore Park. 9am–5pm, third Sunday of the month. sydneyveganmarket.com

SHIFT EATERY Sydney’s first vegan deli offers up a large range of cruelty-free food and beverages including sandwiches, specialty coffee, chocolate, ice-cream, pies, cheese, milk and “mock” meats. You’ll have to come back several times to try a bit of everything! 4/241 Commonwealth Street, Surry Hills. Daily 8am-3pm. 9281 5053. shifteatery.com.au

GIGI PIZZERIA Pizza so good it’s worth lining up for! Gigi’s owner, Marco Mattino, removed all animal products from the menu in 2015, and now makes his traditional Neapolitan pizzas without meat and cheese. Featured on the menu is

know you’ll be eating food that’s good for your body and soul. Try the vegetable curry puffs, sweet Japanese pumpkin dumplings and the Vietnamese tofu rice paper rolls. Or, better yet, take a group of friends and try one of everything. Lower Mezzanine Level of Cook and Philip Park, 2–4 College Street, Sydney. BODHI RESTAURANT A family-owned and operated restaurant in the heart of Sydney’s CBD, Bodhi has been a staple of vegan dining in Sydney for 30 years. Visit Bodhi at lunchtime to enjoy their yum cha menu, served beneath fig trees and hanging lanterns. With a focus on fresh produce bought from local growers with ethical and sustainable farming practices, you

big, juicy and filling—packed with flavour and dripping with vegan cheese, caramelized onion, tomato relish and herbed mayo. The “beef” patties are created with pea and soy proteins—even meat-lovers will be impressed by the similarity to the real deal. Order a side of potato chips and a house-made coconut shake to round out the meal, and finish up with a coconut gelato—100% of proceeds from the gelato go to charity. 111 Glebe Point Road, Glebe. Also located at Randwick and Parramatta. soulburger.com.au

GATHERED KITCHEN This little cafe in Glebe offers a 100% plant-based menu, with a focus on organic produce and dishes piled with vegetables rather than traditional mock meat. Harbour Town Spectacular fireworks, an internationally renowned yacht race and a world famous opera house. SYDNEY’S ICONIC HARBOUR HAS pretty much seen it all since then Lieutenant James Cook arrived aboard the Endeavour in 1770 and named it Port Jackson. It was here that the first settlers set up camp in 1788 and the harbour has been an important part of city life ever since, used for transportation and recreation. Little wonder it is widely regarded as the greatest leisure harbour in the world. On any given day, the harbour is alive with boats of all shapes and sizes, be it passenger ferries, stateof-the-art yachts or kayakers. This is particularly true during the traditional Boxing Day launch of the Rolex Sydney to Hobart yacht race, when hundreds of craft follow the racers out of the harbour. And on New Year’s Eve, there’s no better spot to be than on a boat beneath the Sydney Harbour Bridge as the breathtaking fireworks display takes place in the skies above.

Australian opal is not only the world’s most fascinating and colourful gemstone, it can also be a sound long-term investment.

Fire from the Outback CALLED ‘THE RAINBOW STONE’ by Australia’s Aboriginal people, opal is without doubt one of nature’s most remarkable gifts. It is now recognised as one of the five precious gemstones in the world, along with diamonds, emeralds, rubies and sapphires, and is an excellent investment. While small amounts of opals may be found in other countries such as Ethiopia, Mexico and the USA, Australia produces more than 90 per cent of the world’s supply. The romance of the opal is in the gem’s incredible ability to expose an infinite number of colours, forever moving with the light. Mined in the outback

34

WHE RE I F E B R U A R Y 201 9

of Australia across three states, it is as much the call of the outback that lures the opal miner and keeps them going. Scorched landscapes and blazing red sunsets, the night stars from horizon to horizon, this is a hauntingly beautiful country that penetrates one’s soul. The elusive opal was formed millions of years ago when liquid silica filtered down into the faults and fissures of sedimentary rock. When the water content evaporated, tiny spheres of silica remained and over time were solidified. The intensity and combination of colour occur with such variety that

each gem has an individual character. In 1964 the CSIRO (Australia’s national research laboratories) unlocked the riddle of why opals have such colours. Opal is composed of minute particles of silica in closely packed spherical aggregates. It is the varying arrangement of these particles (and, of course, cavities) that causes the reflected light to be split into the full range of colours of the spectrum. There are three main production areas in Australia for mining opals. There’s the bright and beautiful Queensland boulder opal which is mined around the Quilpie area in Western Queensland.

The intensity and combination of colour occur with such variety that each gem has an individual character.

T H E R A I N B O W S TO N E :

(Opposite page) Jewellery designed by Fiona Altmann, Altmann + Cherny. (Left) Opal ring from Giulians. (Above) Jewellery from The Great Reef Collection by Opal Minded.

Lightning Ridge in New South Wales is the home of the famous black opal which derives its name from the colour of the nobbies or pieces of rough opal in which the gems are usually found. The third area is Coober Pedy and Mintabie in South Australia. Coober Pedy is an Aboriginal name, meaning ‘white man in a hole’, which describes exactly what miners still do today—live underground to escape the fierce heat of summer. This is where the white or milk opals are mined. The value of an opal depends on the amount and brilliance of the colour, preferably being evenly distributed across the face of the polished gem. The greater the spectrum of colours from red to

violet, the better, with crimson, reds and orange being rarer than the greens and blues. Milkiness, cloudiness or greyness detracts from the value. Ideally, the greater the number of colours, the more prized the gem, and if these are arranged in a block pattern, more value is added. The extremes are pin-sized dots of colour (pinfire) to one large sheet of colour (broadflash) covering the whole stone. The elusive ‘harlequin’ is the ultimate in this form but is very rare. Shapes of the finished opal vary according to the characteristics of each stone. Boulder opal is usually cut in baroque or free form, whereas seam opal is at its best presented in cabochon (domed) form.

If you are buying an unset opal, it is important to consider the way it will eventually be worn. For example, some opals will offer a better play of colour when worn vertically, as in a brooch or pendant, whereas others are best flat, as in a ring setting. There is a great deal to consider when investing in your opal, but expert advice is available for your complete pleasure and pride in an ever-inspiring piece of jewellery. Above all, buy the opal colour that appeals to you. Enjoy your purchase, knowing it’s geologically millions of years old, but will give you pleasure every day of the year. Opals—truly nature’s own fireworks!

You’ll then paddle your way out onto the scenic foreshores of Lavender Bay and Blues Point, just in time to watch the sun rise. Sit back and take in the serenity, because nothing says “I love you” like a hot coffee watching the sun rise! Lavender Bay Boat Ramp, Railway Avenue, Lavender Bay. 9056 5045. sydneybykayak.com.au
