Discover the charm and elegance of Silver Oaks Chateau, a French-inspired wedding venue nestled in the scenic landscapes of Pacific, Missouri. For nine years, our chateau has provided couples with an idyllic, private setting to celebrate their love. From the moment you arrive, you’ll be drawn into the magic of our grand ballroom, enchanting outdoor spaces, and our cozy Chalet guest house—perfect for turning your wedding day into a memorable weekend getaway. With years of expertise and a passion for perfection, ou r dedicated team at Silver Oaks Chateau brings unparalleled attention to detail to make your wedding celebration truly unforgettable.
When love is at the center of a celebration, every detail should feel intentional, immersive, and deeply personal. That belief is the heartbeat of this issue, and the driving force behind one of the most ambitious editorial experiences we’ve ever created. For the rst time in our history, we invited a live audience to be part of our editorial photo shoot, but this wasn’t just a behind-the-scenes peek. It was a fully immersive event, a living, breathing story told in real time through sound, movement, and meaning. The atmosphere shifted as the story unfolded, pulling our guests deeper into an experience that was designed not just to be seen, but felt.
That vision came from our designer and creative director of this issue, Laurel Fox. Her gift for telling stories transformed a simple concept into something soul stirring. She didn’t just create a set; she imagined an emotional journey. Every detail had meaning, guiding our guests through the chapters of a couple’s love story with thoughtfulness and grace.
From the moment you entered The Franklin at Soulard, it was clear. This was something different. A custom mural by Elysia King, suspended over the center table, became the heart of the space. Bold, expressive, and full of feeling. It wasn’t just art, it was a visual love story unfolding before our eyes, reminding us that every couple’s story deserves to be witnessed.
Then there was Café Carlos, a sunlit corner created as a tribute to Laurel’s grandfather. Inspired by the textures and spirit of Cuba, it brought memory into the room in the most personal way. It wasn’t just beautiful, it was soulful. It made the whole experience feel grounded. It took my breath away. Of course, the magic didn’t stop there. An extraordinary team of vendors brought this vision to life with heart, skill, and an unwavering dedication to storytelling. Florals arranged with intention. Draping and lighting created mood from shadow and glow. Chefs, stylists, dancers, and artists of every kind came together, not for a trend, not for a checklist, but to create a story. There was no single focal point, only a powerful, collaborative whole. A community of creatives building something unforgettable. This team showed us what’s possible when you lead with authenticity instead of assumption. When you let go of “what’s expected” and lean into bold vision.
In the process, they reminded me of something essential:
Your wedding is not a performance. It’s not a list. It’s not about what you should do. It’s about who you are. Your love, values, your way of seeing the world. When you let go of the script and follow what moves you, something beautiful happens. It's magic. Your wedding becomes unforgettable not because it’s perfect, but because it tells your story.
So, let this issue be your invitation:
To break the rules, tell your story, honor your truth and create something deeply felt and wildly personal.
With gratitude and joy,
Marianne Moore, Editor

TALK OF THE TABLE
Fun, Facts, and Unforgettable Moments
Tayler and Rich’s icebreaker had us smiling from ear to ear! When guests RSVP’d, they were asked to include a fun fact about themselves, and at the reception, those quirky, surprising, and downright hilarious tidbits were printed and placed at each table. It became an instant conversation starter, with guests trying to guess which fact belonged to whom. The result?
Laughter, connection, and new friendships forming right there over dinner. We absolutely love how this simple idea created such a warm, interactive, and memorable experience for everyone in the room.
IN THIS ISSUE Real Details We Love
MAKING A SPLASH Ending the Night with Pure Joy
There’s something totally magical about couples who embrace the moment, Payton and Grant gave us a perfect example.
As the evening wound down, the bridal party kicked off their shoes, let go of tradition, and leapt into the pool, formalwear and all. The scene was pure joy, laughter and that electric feeling of “why not?”. We love when couples give themselves permission to be playful, spontaneous, and totally in the moment. The best memories aren’t always scripted or on a timeline, they just happen, especially when you’re having fun, surrounded by your favorite people, soaking in every last second of the celebration.

SWEET INDIVIDUALITY
A Cake Made to Share
We love a good statement cake moment, and this one was absolute perfection. Instead of a traditional multi-tier cake, Sophia + Spencer created a showstopping tower of mini cakes, each with its own little personality and plenty of charm. The visual impact? Stunning yet so whimsical. It gave all the wow of a tiered cake with the added delight of personal portions. After they cut into their slightly larger top tier, the mini cakes made their way to a dessert station where guests could help themselves. A fresh, fun twist on tradition that felt just as thoughtful as it looked.

STATIONERY THAT TELLS YOUR STORY
Illustrations We Adore
There’s something so timeless and personal about incorporating artwork into wedding stationery. We’re completely smitten. From venue illustrations to custom watercolor portraits, these thoughtful touches turn paper goods into lasting keepsakes. Think about incorporating a sketch of a beloved pet for a playful personal touch to the cocktail napkins. We also love a skyline motif that welcomes guests to St. Louis, or stunning watercolor of the ceremony space that added elegance to a save-the-date. Whether it’s the city, the couple, the venue or even the dog, these little works of art bring personality to paper in the most meaningful way.

The Saint Louis Art Museum was a fabulous venue for our black-tie wedding. Dancing the night away with a full band surrounded by Van Gogh, Monet and Beckmann, it was dreamy.”

We are both very proud of our St. Louis roots and worked to incorporate our love for it in the little details of our wedding. Seeing that come to life, especially during our first look of the reception was incredibly special. Our venue, the Old Post Office had major sentimental value to us, as Danny's late father was heavily involved in the restoration of the building in the late '90s and early '00s. One of his business partners and closest friends gave a speech explaining the significance of the building, which many of our guests mentioned was one of the best parts of the evening.”

Focus on good food, good music, good entertainment. Personalize your special day by including things which are meaningful and unique to both of you. While the day was to celebrate us, we wanted to give the guests a unique and personalized experience where they would walk away saying, ‘I have never been to a wedding like that before.’
A multitude of sentimental heirlooms, family traditions, and fond childhood joys were weaved into the ceremony and reception. Different tiers of the wedding cake were designed with specific details to the bride. One tier replicated the lace on the bride’s veil and another included an heirloom brooch which Michael Temm from Temmtations by Wedding Wonderland recreated.

The whole day was surreal. We both really focused on sitting back and taking it all in. It is still so crazy we had a whole day tailored to the two of us just being ourselves, madly in love, and having fun! We truly are best friends and if anything went wrong, I didn't know about it or care because every moment was perfect and we got to become Mr. and Mrs.! The room took our breath away. Every detail that the vendors put into our special day did not go unnoticed. I didn't realize you could capture who two people are so vividly! From the paper products to the linens, the candles, velvet napkins, fun glassware and flowers! I could talk about the flowers all day long. We approached wedding planning from the guest experience, as most of our guests traveled to St. Louis for our nuptials. It was important to have great music and gift baskets! We loved dancing all night to The Downtown Band with our friends and family, and Big Head Cutouts of ourselves and our dog, Cleo! Richard wanted our gift baskets to look like presents. We used a high gloss white box with stone linen washed ribbon with a round gift tag that said, ‘Welcome to The Lou!’ Inside the box included curated treats from St. Louis. We also created a welcome note that included the weekend agenda and watercolor illustration of us walking our dog, Cleo. Lastly, the gift box included a sugar cookie of our dog, Cleo. We wanted to play off the history of Union Station, and lightly incorporated train themes into our wedding. We worked with Gateway Digital Press to create train-ticket style invitations that guests were encouraged to bring to the ceremony. We had our ushers dress up like train conductors and greet guests by asking for their tickets and directing them to our pre-ceremony cocktail hour. We designed a ‘get to know you’ game for each table to play at the start of the reception. We had guests submit fun facts about themselves when they RSVP’d, printed them on cards, and distributed them around each table. Each table was then tasked with determining which fun fact belonged to each guest at their table. We ditched traditional readings and instead asked three of our favorite couples to offer their advice to us as a couple. We picked one couple that had only been married for a year, another that had been married for a decade, and another that had been married for 30+ years. This added a dynamic and exciting element to the ceremony, and several people told us that they spent part of dinner pondering what advice they would have shared.”

Waiting for our first look at the altar. I was able to relax when I saw Nick's smile at the end of the aisle. Sharing a delicious meal is one of our favorite things to do. We loved the sushi at cocktail hour, steak and lobster at dinner, assorted dessert bar, and late-night bites. Our out-of-town guests enjoyed visiting iconic St. Louis sites during the wedding weekend with a Cardinal's game, Mississippi River boat cruise, Anheuser Busch brewery tour, and trip to the top of the Arch.”

The most memorable moment was getting married! The whole day was full of our favorite places, things that describe us and that we enjoy as a couple. We took photos at Busch Stadium and had a cocktail hour at Kilroys St. Louis. Another memorable moment was privately getting to see The Garage at Music Quarter before the reception started and seeing our vision come together exactly as we pictured. It was such a fun and unique atmosphere to celebrate with our friends and family. We LOVED being the first wedding reception that the Garage had hosted!”

At the front of our wedding entrance we had a 10-foot-tall pink elephant wearing glasses and holding a martini glass in its trunk. My husband let me know before we were engaged that we HAD to have it at our wedding. He explained that it’s significant in his family and all their important events (weddings, graduation parties etc.) When people would see the pink elephant, they knew they had arrived at the Coker event. We wanted a fun way to tie it into our day, so our signature cocktail was called 'The Pink Elephant.' Guests could not stop raving about all the little touches with the pink elephant!”

When we were planning, we each picked two things that were really important to us and took the lead on planning those things. We also budgeted more for those items than we would have otherwise.”
Honor traditions that make sense for you and try not to worry about what others think if you choose to do something untraditional (the day is about you after all!). For us, we wanted to be together as much as possible on our day, so we stayed in the same hotel room the night before. Starting and ending our day together was important to us even though that is not considered a traditional way to spend the night before your wedding.”

Having a private dinner before the reception with our immediate family and wedding party, Counting down to NYE with all the people we love in one room, watching all our guests from the back of the room enjoy the night.”
We decided to combine our place cards and wedding favors into one thoughtful detail. Since I love fresh flowers, we wanted each guest to be able to take some home. I found mismatched pink bud vases and had our florist fill them with single blooms. Each vase included a flower card pick and a small notecard with a custom message to each guest thanking them for the role they’ve played in our lives and for celebrating with us. To complete the look, our florist suggested placing clear cylinder bud vases on the tables so guests could add their pink bud vases wherever they liked. This gave the tables a fun, personal, and eclectic vibe that we absolutely loved. We received so many compliments on this idea, it added such a meaningful and memorable touch to the day. Chef Grace at O+O sent us a questionnaire a few months before our wedding to get to know us as a couple. She asked questions like 'what are you cooking at home for dinner on a Tuesday night?' 'What are your favorite types of cuisine?' 'Where is your go to restaurant in STL?', then she created a custom dinner menu that was based on this questionnaire. We absolutely loved this! Our wedding dinner menu was one of a kind, based on what was local, in season, and unique to us.”

There were many details that we loved about our wedding, but one of our favorites was keeping the atmosphere romantic by adding drapery, tons of florals, soft lit candles, and even all the way down to the types of linens we chose. We also read our vows in private to each other. It seems like a small detail, but it made a huge difference to us so we could fully display emotion to each other without a crowd watching! One more thing that made this experience unforgettable, was having my mom's help during the wedding planning process. She really helped pull all the details together and ensured we had everything we needed to make our day perfect; it was so special planning our wedding with her!!”

The whole day felt like one long highlight reel. But from the start, a few moments stood out, the quiet anticipation in our bridal suites, surrounded by our closest friends and family. Walking down the aisle and seeing everyone’s smiling faces, even in that classic STL humidity that did us no favors. The party bus with our full bridal party, champagne flowing and singing at the top of our lungs. Our siblings delivering deeply meaningful toasts, well outside their public-speaking comfort zones. Our first dances, yes, we took lessons, and finally, a packed dance floor that was just as full and happy as our hearts.”

We asked all our guests to wear black, reserving color only for our mothers. It brought elegance and focus to the space and created a powerful visual moment that exceeded anything we could have imagined. One of our favorite personal touches was replacing place cards with embroidered napkins featuring each guest’s name, a keepsake and a detail that made everyone feel special.”
We wanted it to feel like the most epic dinner party we’d ever host at home, just scaled up. It was personal, chic, and rooted in intention. Our biggest advice? Do what you want. It’s your day, and don’t lose sight of why you’re doing this. You’ll likely never have all your favorite people in one room again, so be present and soak it in.”

I heard several people say how nervous they were right before walking down the aisle. While I had butterflies, I remember feeling almost giddy excitement. I was surprised at how relaxed we were before the ceremony. It was such a gift being able to soak up time with our family and bridal party before everything officially kicked off. We chose to read our vows in private early the morning of our wedding and only share a snippet during the actual ceremony, it was just the two of us, in our most honest form.”
When you’re designing your wedding, try to pick vendors and elements that allow for the details of your relationship and individual personalities to shine and those close to you to be a part of your wedding. We found these pieces are what we cherished most on the dayof and even more now when looking back. For example, our videographer and live painter were both close family friends. We chose to get married on New Year’s Eve as it was the anniversary of our first kiss.”

Throughout the planning process there were plenty of times we felt overwhelmed. One trick that helped was picking a night during the week that was reserved for wedding planning. We did ‘Wedding Wednesdays’, which were reserved for us hooking up the laptop to the TV to browse websites, vendors and orders. Usually always accompanied with a bottle of wine. It made the process fun for both of us! We really enjoyed our dinner at a sweetheart table. The day is so long and there is so much constant stimulation. It was special to get that time sitting by ourselves as newlyweds, instead of feeling like we had to continue to host a big head table or other guests. Highly recommend!”

Once we finished our photos and our cocktail hour had started, Tim and I snuck away for a private dinner. Our venue coordinator made sure there was a private room set to the side with a small dinner table for just us. One of the caterers came up to get drink orders from us and let us know what the plan was. He brought in 3 of whatever we said we wanted to drink and then plates with a little of everything from our buffet, and then we were completely alone. It was the best decision we could have made. We were able to just be with each other, made sure we had a good meal before dancing the rest of the night, and it gave us a chance to be present in the celebration.”

I booked an appointment to see it just for fun and fell in love immediately with my mom and sister in agreement that it was the one! Kirsten so kindly changed the spelling of the dress to the “Peyton” as my name is spelled that way and I was the first bride to wear it! Felt like fate!! Remember, it’s your day. You’ll get opinions from everyone but stay true to what feels right for you both. Tradition is optional, meaning is essential. With that said, plan for the marriage, not just the wedding. A wedding is one day, marriage a lifetime. Make time for relationship checkins and shared reflection during planning. Our wedding reflected everything we love. Faith, family, and fun. We included personal touches throughout the day, from handwritten vows and a meaningful first prayer together to custom drink designs that added a creative twist to the celebration. The floral design blended timeless elegance with a touch of modern romance, and our reception turned into the ultimate celebration, full of dancing, laughter, and joy. Every detail, big and small, was a labor of love, and we were surrounded by the people who mean the most to us. It truly felt like a dream come to life.”

Going into the day with that mindset let us both just be present in the moment and enjoy what was really important, which was marrying each other! I told myself it didn’t matter how long I had spent on a cocktail napkin or when I wanted ceremony songs to be started, no one is going to remember those things, especially since they weren’t the ones planning it, and at the end of the day things like that held zero value over our marriage to each other. The best moments of our wedding weekend were in the small moments where we dared to break away from tradition and be true to ourselves. The small moments added up to a weekend that was uniquely us. Neither of us enjoy being center stage and knew we wanted to create an environment that was intimate and comfortable despite a large guest list. We opted to do wedding speeches at the rehearsal dinner so we had time to listen, laugh, and cry with our closest loved ones as well as give a speech ourselves to thank our nearest and dearest for their unwavering support.”
As we danced the night away, we drank custom cocktails that represented our past, present, and future together. The CoMo, representing our time together living in Columbia, The Lou, representing our time in the city that started at all, and The Manhattan, representing the city in which we chose to spend our happily ever after. Each drink truly felt like a toast to our love story.”

Be flexible in your planning process and remember why you are getting married. Don't let the pressure to be perfect or the tiny details stress you out. Honor the vision for what you want your wedding to be like by getting a team around you that can bring that vision to life but be open to shifts and tweaks that may naturally come along the way and know what is or isn't a dealbreaker. Also, celebrate every little step of the process. We would do a little champagne toast every time we checked something off our to-do list to keep ourselves excited during high-pressure parts of the process.”

LHeartfelt Ways to Honor a Loved One at your Wedding
By Jennifer C. Frakes
exi Basik was married last year on a beautiful spring day. It was the celebration she had envisioned and the beginning of her life with her beloved husband Chris. Her wedding day was practically perfect. But a person very important to Lexi was not there that day. “Jana was one of my best friends and would have been one of the bridesmaids to stand by my side,” Basik said. “She died of brain cancer when I was a senior in college. Your wedding day is a space to have all the people that you love most in the
same room. It feels sad when a few of those people are not there.”
Basik wanted to feel like Jana was still a part of her day. “During my ceremony, I saved a seat for Jana in the front row that included a picture of her, a candle, and one of the beanies she had worn a lot that her mom gave me when she passed. It felt so special and sacred to me.”
That felt right to Lexi, considering that Lexi and Jana’s families are extremely close and Jana had passed about three years prior to the wedding. What are some thoughtful ways to incorporate the memory of passed loved ones into your wedding day? How can you pay tribute to
people you are missing while still focusing on your happy celebration?
There are many ways to honor these loved ones, whether they be “Just for You,” “Quiet Connections,” or “A Communal Commemoration.” Read on to hear from brides, relatives, guests and wedding professionals for a wide array of possibilities.
JUST FOR YOU
Of course, all these tributes are personal, but some may prefer to acknowledge their loved one in a way that is more private. Wendy Markham is the owner and lead planner at Revel and Wonder Weddings. She has seen many couples go this route. “A bride may attach a locket or photo to her bouquet,” Markham said. “Or wrap the bouquet in her father’s handkerchief. Grooms can carry a pocket watch or a special coin with them, or a photo in their suit jacket.” Brides may also choose to wear a piece of heirloom jewelry. Though these are private ways of honoring loved ones, they can be preserved and remembered with thoughtful photographs. Photographer Sarah Corbett said, “These tributes are often deeply emotional, and couples are so grateful to have them documented. It’s not about posing—it’s about preserving the moment, the memory, and the meaning behind it.”
Corbett asks that you communicate with your photographer about these tributes prior to your wedding day. “Let us know ahead of time what you’re planning and what it means to you,” Corbett said. “When we know the intention behind the moment, we can approach it with care and creativity.
Markham says these subtle ways of acknowledging a loved one may be especially appropriate if the loss is recent and it may be dif cult to do a more public gesture. “How you choose to honor your loved one at your wedding can depend on how long it has been since their passing,” Markham said. “One groom had lost his mother not long before the wedding, and there was a photo of her near the altar. He was understandably emotional, and it may have been too soon for that type of tribute.” Keep in mind, advises Markham, that the loved ones you are remembering would want your wedding day to be a day of
celebration, with happiness and joy. Lauren Ponder wholeheartedly agrees. Ponder is an end-of-life planner and a certi ed death doula, a relatively new eld. Through her company With Love Events, she helps families plan celebrations of life when someone dies. She organizes uplifting events for the grieving family and helps lighten their load. She can also help couples with the best ways for them to celebrate the lives of passed love ones at their weddings. “Weddings and funerals are both rituals,” Ponder said. “You can still include all the traditions of a wedding that you want to, but you can modify, so it feels right to you and really make it your own.”
In her work as an end-of-life planner, Ponder is passionate about creating a death-positive mindset and celebrating legacy. Weddings are a family event and Ponder believes it’s important that couples discuss with the affected family members their plans for memorializing a loved one that day. “What will bring you and your partner joy? What feels right for you both?” Ponder said. “Let others in the inner circle know your plans, but try to stick with what you feel good about.”
QUIET CONNECTIONS
Sarah Corbett has photographed over 500 weddings and seen some beautiful tributes, some where not a word was said. “A bride had lost her father and the ceremony was outdoors,” Corbett recalled. “As everyone turned to watch her begin walking down the aisle, the bride released a pink, heart-shaped balloon. Everyone watched it oat up into the sky, and knew that it was for her dad. It was a moment of quiet re ection and connection before the ceremony began,” Corbett said.
Mentioning loved ones in the ceremony program is simple yet meaningful. As is a table of photos at the reception. Jamie Reese and her husband honored Jamie’s grandmother and Scott’s brother this way, with a sign saying: We know you’d be here today if Heaven weren’t so far away. “The photo table was in the space before the reception room, so it was easy to see, but it wasn’t the main focus,” Reese said.
Camryn and Blake Smith honored their departed grandparents with an empty chair in the second row of their ceremony space,
with owers and a cloth Camryn created that read: In loving memory of those who are not here today, but forever in our hearts . “My grandma loved it,” Smith said. “She teared up a little when she saw the chair and was happy we remembered my grandpa in that way.”
Some couples choose to have a table displaying wedding pictures of the greatgrandparents, grandparents, and parents, both living and deceased. “It can serve as a memorial but is also just a nice nod to the couples married in the families through the years,” Markham said. “It celebrates the continuing history and legacy and shows that life goes on.”
Sarah Corbett shot a wedding that used family photos in a uniquely beautiful way. “It was a Jewish wedding and the couple was deeply connected to their ancestry,” Corbett said. “There were photos of loved ones hanging inside their chuppah. The photos were hung with clear wires, so it looked like they were oating. It was a sacred and personal tribute.”
Honoring a loved one via wedding favors can be a sweet gesture-literally, in the case of Amy Cavato. She paid homage to her Italian grandmother by giving guests bags of cookies made with her grandma’s special recipe from Italy. Bride Ellen Phillips gifted guests small jars of honey to remember her grandfather, who had been a beekeeper. To pay tribute to her grandmother, a skilled needlepoint enthusiast, Maggie Sullivan needlepointed the table numbers for the reception.
Instead of (or in addition to) wedding favors, some couples donate to a charity in a loved one’s name. Some choose to donate to an organization important to the deceased person or connected to the person’s passing. A card can be placed at each guest table saying that in lieu of favors, a donation has been made in a loved one’s name to the American Cancer Society, for example. Markham has also seen couples include this intent on their wedding website, with a link to the organization if anyone would also like to donate. “They then announced at the reception how much total money was raised, which is another opportunity to acknowledge that person,” Markham said.

A COMMUNAL COMMEMORATION
Families may want to remember a passed love one in a way that all the wedding guests notice and can be a part of. Mentioning a loved one during the ceremony, asking for a moment of silence, or choosing a favorite poem or reading of theirs is a meaningful way of doing that.
Corbett remembers another very poignant moment at a wedding she photographed. The bride had lost her father as a teenager. But she had many signi cant relatives and dear friends of her dad’s that helped ll his absence. “When the celebrant asked ‘Who gives this bride away?’ ten men stood and
said in unison, ‘We do’,” Corbett said. “It was very touching.”
Playing signi cant songs is an easy yet considerate way to pay tribute to loved ones. Bea Pollard and her brothers arranged for a favorite local performer to sing their deceased father’s favorite song at their younger brother’s rehearsal dinner. “It was an unexpected but sweet way to remember my dad as the wedding celebrations began,” Pollard said.
Jaime Reese was recently a guest at wedding where the bride paid tribute to her grandparents by dancing to the grandparents’ rst dance song, along with her cousins (all their other grandkids). “I had never seen that before. It was a group you usually don’t see
on the dance oor together and they were having a lot of fun,” Reese said.
Like Lauren Ponder suggested, give wedding traditions your own spin if you are missing someone that day. Both wedding planner Wendy Markham and photographer Sarah Corbett have witnessed lovely fatherdaughter dances when the father could not be there. “The bride chose ve or so important men in her life-her uncle, brother, cousins, each representing a piece of her journey,” Corbett said.
Lexi Basik, the bride who honored her dear friend Jana at her wedding, was a guest at the wedding of Jana’s younger brother. “I will never forget the father-daughter dance,”
WithUs in Spirit
Basik said. “Jana was their only daughter, so her dad would never get to have his father-daughter dance. The bride surprised Jana’s dad after her father-daughter dance by having a dance with him as well. It was the most touching moment in a wedding that I’ve ever seen. We were all brought to tears, including him!”
A celebratory way to pay tribute to someone is to literally raise a glass to them, suggests Ponder. “It could be a shot-sized version of something they liked to drink, accompanied by a brief toast. Just something quick and fun, but also a nice way to include them,” Ponder said. If a toast isn’t quite right, choosing a loved one’s favorite brand of beer or wine to serve with a sign noting this at the bar is a more “quiet” way to pay respects.
REMEMBER THOSE THAT ARE THERE
Markham has some important advice for all couples: make sure to spend time with the parents, grandparents and signi cant older adults that are present for your big day.
“It’s a busy day, but make them a priority,” Markham said. “They may not be the ones on the dance oor all night, but get photos of and with them and quotes from them, if you have a videographer. Also, take the ve minutes to do the parent dances, if you have living parents. You will regret it if you don’t.”
ALL OF THE ABOVE
Aimee Krummenacher and her family were shocked by the sudden death of her beloved sister Katie, months before Aimee’s daughter Emma’s wedding. “Katie was larger than life and loved to dance at weddings,” Aimee said. Katie was remembered in many ways at her niece’s wedding: Emma carried a locket with Katie’s photo on her bouquet, she was mentioned in the program, and her photo was displayed on the memory table. Katie’s favorite cocktail (blackberry whiskey and iced tea) was featured and named for her. Her full name was Katie Markiewicz, and the drink was cleverly called the “Ka-Tea Markie-Whiskey.”
Even though her passing was recent, paying
tribute to Katie in all these ways felt right to Aimee and her family. Aimee is glad they honored her adored sister in so many ways, but one stands out. “We formed a little huddle on the dance oor as the music began,” Krummenacher said. “We knew the best way to remember Katie was to do what she would be doing-we danced the night away.”

We live in a technologically interconnected world, where inducement to share personal, private stories surrounds us and lures us in on a daily basis. The urge to respond to likes and noti cations instantaneously can be all-consuming.
As with most societal phenomena, however, we may have begun to circle back and reconsider how we experienced life before we had to carry our phones everywhere. Blending the new with the old, and weaving tradition into modern ways of connecting, can create hybrid experiences that respect cultural history while also embracing innovation. Nowhere is this more apparent than with today’s “Unplugged” weddings.
An unplugged wedding is one where typically the bride and groom asks their guests to be fully present and to put away their own phones, while ensuring them that the wedding will be captured for posterity in multiple ways.
Designing an event where a couple invites their loved ones to celebrate their new life together has always been a complex undertaking, but today’s wedding photographers and planners nd themselves battling the presence of smart phones at every turn. Younger couples today grew up with smart phones, but even older wedding guests love to take photos and video of special emotional moments in their lives.
The key to enjoying your child’s or your friend’s wedding may be to simply “unplug” and let the professionals do their thing, while you sit, listen to the couple’s wedding story, enjoy a glass of wine, watch the rst dance, and laugh and clap over the speeches.
HIRE PROFESSIONALS TO CAPTURE #THESTORY
St. Louis wedding photographer Michelle Jahns of Michelle Jahns Photography, LLC, understands the need family members and friends may have to pull out their phones during the ceremony or the rst dance.
“It’s such a big life moment,” Michelle said. “You have all these people that you wouldn’t normally have together, and you want to have these long-term, accessible memories. It’s the
Leaving the Unplugged World Behind
one thing you get to keep after the wedding –the pictures!”
And yet, those smartphone photos can make her job challenging. The wedding couple has hired her to bring her professional equipment – cameras, lighting, tripods – to the event to create perfect photos. But she has on occasion found it dif cult to get a photo of important members of the wedding party without their phones out, including in one instance, a mother of the bride who would not put down her phone.
“So every photo I took of her is her watching the rst dance or the speeches through her cell phone, which is just sad.”
In many of those instances, Michelle said, there was no videographer present, so both family and friends felt a need to capture the wedding on their phones. Michelle recommends the use of a professional to capture video, which allows the guests to just enjoy the experience.
She also asks friends and family of the couple to put their phones away during portrait sessions. Enforcement is not really her job, she says, except during those precious moments when she is setting up and arranging wedding party photos.
“We don’t allow other people to take photos
because we’re composing,” she said. “It’s our artistic creative minds at work. People taking pics on their phones is not helpful.” During these sessions, she will be vocal about the importance of the work the couple has hired her to do.
PROFESSIONAL
CONTENT CREATORS
CREATE SOCIAL VIDEOS
Another option for today’s weddings is to hire a professional content creator who can capture all the moments that make for great social media posts. Leshay Reed, of Hype Queen Media, is a locally based professional who works all over the country with couples who like the idea of having TikTok-like reels made of their weddings but don’t want their guests to feel duty bound to make those videos.
“Having a content creator there allows wedding guests to just enjoy being there and not worry about ‘where’s my phone – I want to make sure I get this,” Leshay said. “It also ensures the wedding couple doesn’t feel a need to repeatedly ask people to take video.”
Leshay’s goal is to remove any worry from the wedding couple or their parents or bridal party that something important won’t get recorded. She had this experience at her own wedding.
“It was really important to me when I got married,” she said. “There were so many details I had thought about, but when you get to the wedding, you don’t see everything, and there are 200 people there you love, and it’s so exciting. And you’re like this big heart-shaped cloud, and you don’t see everything. I really make it my job to get those details.”
She may capture clips of guests at the bar, or grabbing appetizers, or even special items such as the bride’s great-grandmother’s cake knife being used, or ower arrangements on the tables.
In Leshay’s own wedding, she cut a heart out of one of her grandfather’s old blue shirts and stitched it into her dress. “That was a detail that was really important for me to be captured at my wedding. I try to make sure I do the same for my couples.”
To ensure they are on the same wavelength, Leshay meets with the wedding couple before the wedding, which can be anywhere from a year in advance to the month before, to learn about those special kinds of details. She may capture clothing being adjusted, or something funny a
wedding party member says that wouldn’t end up in a nal wedding video but is perfect for social media. She asks the couple if they want trendy TikTok-like content or something more traditional. Not all couples share the nal content she creates on social media, but some do. She tries to nd out during the planning stage how they will use their content.
To prevent her presence from being intrusive, Leshay plans carefully and often meets with other vendors, speci cally photographers and planners, to ensure she keeps her part running smoothly.
Leshay captures all her photos and video on an iPhone (currently the iPhone 15), using a stabilizer and sometimes a square light for receptions, but no other attachments. She typically edits on Capcut or with iMovie, and she will have the rst video ready for the couple within 24 hours of the wedding.
“Meaning if I leave the venue at 9pm, they will have their content by 9pm the next evening.” All additional video, edited and nalized, will be delivered within two weeks. Her scope of services also includes taking Polaroids.
Leshay is largely self-taught, although she has taken some specialty classes. She attributes her editing expertise to her years as a dancer.
“I’ve been dancing for 28 years,” she said. “I coach two dance teams here in St. Louis. I’ve danced professionally. So my brain naturally works in rhythm. I listen to the music, and if there’s a beat dropping, I try to match it up with the timing, making sure the clips are changing.”
COACHING GUESTS
TO COMPLY WITH THE UNPLUGGED MOMENT
Leshay and Michelle have both noticed that many wedding guests, in their excitement about the event, often miss the signs at the entrance to the wedding venue that ask them not to take photos or video during the ceremony.
“The wedding of ciant is the one who has the most effect,” Michelle offered. “They’re speaking to everyone. There’s usually a sign before you sit down, but most people don’t even read it. There’s so much other stuff going on. The of ciant makes the point at the beginning of the ceremony. I usually wave so the guests see me. I may joke – ‘I’ll talk to you if I need you.’”
Extraordinary.
Leaving the Unplugged World Behind
For couples who want a more personal ceremony, hiring a celebrant-of ciant who can legally marry the couple but who also brings a creative and narrative approach to the ceremony can be a memorable experience.
Amanda Chasnoff is both a wedding planner and one of ve Certi ed Life Cycle Celebrants in the Midwest, and she is headquartered in St. Louis. Amanda’s background is in event and wedding planning. She became interested in the of ciating aspect of weddings when a friend’s ceremony ended with the bride in tears because the of ciant mispronounced names, forgot to ask the couple to recite their vows, and failed to bring the bride’s grandmother up to speak. That experience inspired her to add wedding of ciant to her scope of services. It’s the part of her job where she makes the least amount of money but that she enjoys the most.
Almost all of her weddings are unplugged, and many times, the couple doesn’t even want
their photos on social media. Many of her weddings are in the upper-range of costs, so the couple often hires professional photographers and videographers, who have a clause in their contracts about no phone pics during the ceremony. She helps enforce that by talking to the wedding guests about photography at the beginning of the ceremony.
“I have a real hard line,” she said. “No phones, no cameras, except for the professionals. I remind them the couple wants them to be paying attention, kind of putting it on them, maybe a little bit of a guilt trip. But I want to assure them we have it covered.”
To assuage the need to take pics for social media, which almost every guest wants to do, she uses humor. She gives them a whole minute to take out their phones and get some photos before shutting it down. With the wedding couple’s permission, she gives the guests a “social media moment” at the
beginning of the ceremony.
“Get your phones out,” she tells them. ”Take as many pics as you want. Then put them away.” It’s a light, humorous moment before they get into the more emotional part of the couple’s love story.
As a celebrant-of ciant, Amanda specializes in telling the couple’s love story – how they met, what their cultural traditions are, and any cute or funny stories they want to include. She describes herself as a “Love Storyteller.”
One of her favorite stories was a couple who had met in elementary school, where they had been best buddies for years but with no romantic attachment. They lost touch but reconnected at a kindergarten friend’s wedding.
“The emotional highlight for the bride was that her father, who had died before the wedding, had known the groom as a child,” she said.
“She knew that her father had really known the man she was marrying. I told this story during the ceremony to pin-drop silence. Everyone was emotionally involved and in tears.”

The Central West End: Where old-time charm meets urban vibrancy
Nestled between Forest Park and St. Louis University’s Midtown campus, the Central West End (CWE) is one of St. Louis' oldest neighborhoods. Built to support the surge of visitors to the 1904 World’s Fair, the neighborhood was once home to fair-era hotels that, over time, transformed into midrise apartment buildings overlooking the nostalgic single-family Classic Revival homes along the tree-lined streets of Pershing, Hortense and Lenox places.

With its iconic grif n-adorned lampposts dotting Euclid and Maryland avenues and the surrounding streets, the CWE continues to offer residential old-world charm mixed with thriving commercial diversity and is hands down one of the most dreamy and accessible areas for St. Louis wedding events. From romantic and traditional to funky and out-ofthe-box, weddings in this historic district are certain to make for lasting memories.
VERSATILE AND CLASSIC
“The CWE has everything you need to plan your wedding,” says Kate Haher, executive director of the Central West End Business Community Improvement District. “You can nd your wedding dress, bridesmaids dresses, suits, wedding rings, owers, photographers, caterers and venues all in the most unique neighborhood in St. Louis.”
One reason engaged couples fall in love with the CWE is it has everything necessary to make the day special and treat guests right.
Fabulous hotels like the AC Marriott, The Doubletree by Hilton, and the luxurious, historic Chase Park Plaza Hotel help your guests feel right at home and in the middle of all the action.
Whether your wedding ceremony is at the Cathedral Basilica, the Jewel Box in Forest Park and your reception is at the Chase Park Plaza, The McPherson, or the Mahler Ballroom, your guests never have to travel far. They also won’t be bored in between the ceremony and reception.
As one of the most walkable neighborhoods in St. Louis, the CWE has a variety of shops, restaurants, and venues to keep guests entertained in between the ceremony and reception. There’s Provisions St. Louis, the go-to lifestyle shop for “necessary luxuries” and thoughtful gifts. Left Bank Books is a neighborhood gem for book lovers. And what pairs well with books? Coffee, of course, which you can nd at Pass the Past, an independent coffee shop. For art lovers, the
many art galleries on McPherson offer the perfect respite between events.
Another reason couples (and photographers and videographers) love the CWE is for its endless photo opportunities. Whether you’re a couple who wants editorial-style wedding photos in front of the Maryland Plaza Fountain or on the steps of Cathedral Basilica, a moody shoot inside Maryland House, the area’s sexiest rooftop bar, playful photos inside Up-Down Arcade Bar, or more traditional photos amidst the wide-open spaces at Forest Park, you can have it all in the CWE. Only your imagination, time, and budget limits the possibilities.
The CWE also has endless dining possibilities for rehearsal dinners and bridal brunches. Whether it’s a bridal brunch or a morning-after-the-festivities brunch, Brasserie by Niche and Bowood by Niche will please the palate. While Brasserie offers classic French bistro fare in a warm, romantic atmosphere with indoor and outdoor, Bowood, located
MAHLER BALLROOM

on Olive at the northeastern edge of the CWE, is an ideal spot to enjoy brunch in an urban garden oasis. Both restaurants also offer lunch and dinner options as well. .
Another unique brunch spot is Evangeline’s Bistro and Music Shop. This New Orleansinspired bar/eatery has a Saturday and Sunday Swing Jazz Brunch with the tastiest beignets north of NOLA. What better way to celebrate!
Bar Italia might be in the heart of the CWE, but it’s guaranteed you’ll feel like you’re in Italy. The upscale restaurant offers
an intimate indoor dining and patio seating, serving authentic Italian dishes including their housemade gelato.
Edera Italian Eatery across from the Maryland Plaza fountain is another Italian restaurant that offers elevated, more modern twists on Italian dishes. Couples getting married during the fall and winter months can reserve heated outdoor chalets perfect for rehearsal dinners or an intimate couple’s dinner before the wedding.
If Italian cuisine isn’t your go-to, consider
Kampai Sushi Bar, Sushi Koi or Saigon Cafe for Asian fare.
Steak lovers enjoy the Tenderloin Room located at The Chase in an old-school setting with restored 1922 woodwork and custom waterfall chandeliers for an elevated dining experience. The Chase is also home to The Preston, a New American restaurant offering small plates, wine, and craft cocktails. Both restaurants are ideal for groomsmen dinners. The CWE is also home to the jewelry stores Kendra Scott and Brilliant Earth. Each satis es different price points and wedding jewelry needs. You’ll nd beautiful jewelry at Kendra Scott to complement bridesmaids’ dresses and mother-of-the-bride and groom attire.
Just a few doors down from Kendra Scott is Brilliant Earth, an upscale ne jeweler. While walk-ins are welcome, the best way to shop for your rings is to book an appointment. With an appointment, you’re guaranteed personalized attention, expert design services and a shopping experience curated to your tastes and preferences.
If your tastes run more eclectic, head to The Chase and visit The Silver Lady. You’ll nd a unique collection of bracelets, rings, earrings and necklaces made from a collection of
gemstones. Lori, aka The Silver Lady, began selling jewelry out of a friend's spare bedroom nearly 40 years ago and now has two shops, the rst one in Delmar on The Loop and the second at The Chase. Her jewelry pieces make excellent bridesmaid or groomsmen gifts but could also be the perfect t for that couple who wants less traditional, more personal wedding jewelry.
“The CWE is a community that has something for everyone,” Haher reiterates. “A mix of venues for all the festivities keeps the wedding fun and exciting … and the pictureperfect backdrop [is] an obvious choice when planning a wedding.”
Truly, the CWE has so much for engaged couples planning a wedding that you have to see it for yourself. Come spend a day in the neighborhood, explore and fall in love with all the possibilities.

When thoughtfully chosen, a wedding favor adds a personal touch and creates a lasting impression for guests. But when it’s given out of obligation, it often ends up forgotten or discarded. On a day meant to re ect the couple’s unique story, the favor should be just as meaningful.
Whether it’s an interactive experience that leaves guests with a memento to take home, something that guests can utilize during the wedding festivities like a hand painted fan or pair of sunglasses at an outdoor ceremony, or anl unique item that celebrates the couple’s love story, local planner Laurel Fox of One Foxy Affair believes the key to a good wedding favor is choosing one that will “surprise and delight guests,” not simply “check a box.” Gone are the days of items given out of obligation — now, favors can mean so much more.
”When I’m thinking about a couple’s wedding day, it’s really important to tailor the day in every aspect to the unique couple,” Fox said.
Out-of-the-box thinking can really upgrade the idea of a traditional favor. Keeping in mind the unique couple as well as the guest experience, a great favor can be one of many things. Interactive
experiences at the wedding can make for both a great memory and a great favor.
”I’ve really been liking personalized artwork, which I've been seeing a lot of lately,” Fox said. “It’s a piece of art that guests can take home and display in their house and it's also a great reminder of the wedding day.”
One example of this is guest watercolor portraits, where guests have the opportunity to have a custom painting done of them that they get to take home.
“It’s always a crowd pleaser,” Elysia King, a local wedding painter shared. ”Everyone loves it.”
While King began her journey as a live wedding ceremony painter, she began doing guest portraits as couples started looking for a more unique, interactive favor for their guests to take home.
“The guests love it and love having something to take home that’s a little more personal,” King said. ”I’ve had guests reach out and tell me they’ve had them framed.”
During the reception, King will set up a table where guests can stop by, have their photo taken, and pick up their portrait at the end of the night.
”Every artist has their own style, whether it’s more simple or more couture, but usually guests
WEDDING FAVORS YOUR GUESTS WILL LOVE
are just over the moon to have something to take home,” King shared. “It’s very ful lling and fun to watch guests react when they get their picture back. People will even stop by the table and see the pictures waiting to be disturbed and pick out who’s who, and that’s when I know I’ve done a good job.”
However, scheduling and planning is incredibly important when bringing in a vendor who is providing both an experience and a takehome item. The guest count, hours allotted, and budget for take-home work to nish additional portraits can determine how many paintings can be completed and if a second artist is needed.
“It’s really contingent on the couple’s guest count, their budget, and if they care more about the experience or the paintings themselves,” King explained.
And as unique as the offering may be already, there’s even more ways to customize the experience.
“Some people do monograms or the venue sketched in one background prior,” King added, “and that’s another element that makes it really fun and personal.”
Another experience-turned-favor is a tried and true photobooth, and St. Louis’ Fête Booth is taking the classic experience to a new level, with backdrops, personalized lights, and even a lter that gives photos the ‘Kardashian style’ black-and-white glam look.
“Not only is it an experience that the guests are able to do, but also take home and have in perpetuity,” said Elizabeth Friedel, co-owner of Fête Booth. “We really provide ourselves on the experience itself. It’s not just grabbing props and taking a photo. We walk the guest through it and make sure they have a great experience that they remember, Then, they also get to take the image home as we have printing on-site.”
“Grandparents, parents, they love it because they can get a family photo, take it with or without fun props, and then take it home that night. They can put it in a frame or hang it on their fridge as they have that physical copy immediately,” Friedel said. “Even the younger generation loves it because they don't really print photos. So it’s something tangible along with being a memory.”
And it’s not just any photo they get to take
WEDDING FAVORS YOUR GUESTS WILL LOVE
home. The print is completely customized for the couple and their day. Along with the addition of custom props and neon signs with the new couple’s last name, the photos are printed special for each wedding.
“For the images, we create a custom overlay that matches the vibe of their wedding,” Friedel explained. “I take their wedding invitation or monogram and then we brand the images to really fully match the wedding.”
From printed photos to digital GIFs and boomerangs, guests can make the most of the experience with their date, family, or friend group, and every person in the picture gets to take home the memory.
”We love the on-site prints for favors because you're getting a full experience at the wedding,” Friedel said. “It’s not just giving something away — your guests are getting another activity and another memorable experience and then they get to take home that personalized photo that helps them remember that experience.”
Fox agrees that experience-based favors are a big hit, noting, “Giving people something to do at your wedding can be really exciting if your budget allows.”
However, a classic take-home item can also make for a wonderful favor, as long as
it remains true to the couple. Fox shared that a dessert a couple loves or a local staple like Gooey Butter cake can be great options, or potentially an even further customized takehome treat.
“Maybe a couple got engaged overseas, and there might be a drink that is unique to that area that they really like — whether it’s sangria or a spritz,” Fox said. “Guests can take home little kits where they can make the drink at home and relive the excitement of your day.”
Some couples may even choose to create such edible favors themselves.
“We had a couple who was really into baking, and they baked these beautiful three-tier wedding cake cookies for their guests,” Fox said. “We also had a couple where the family was really into canning, so they canned jars of jelly for all of their guests.”
She continued, “I think those are all lovely ways to tell a story and give people something to eat or even take home to try after the wedding.”
For those who’d like to hire an outside vendor to do the work, one option is a local business like Vom Fass St. Louis, who can customize bottles of oil, vinegar, and liqueur in a way that helps to tell a couple’s story. As owner Anita von Ballmoos put it, it's something different than
“your regular piece of chocolate that you give as a wedding favor.”
“One couple, their last name was Lemon, so they chose a lemon oil,” von Ballmoos explained. “Or if the honeymoon is in France, then they may pick the Herbes de Provence oil.”
If a couple has something they already love, they can personalize it and share that with their guests as a favor, too.
“A bride and the groom came into the store and they picked their favorite salad dressing, and then we put it in little bottles that we personalized with their name and the date,” she explained. “And then we gift wrapped it in little bags with the wedding colors.”
Just like any other kind of favor, personalization is the key to making it worthwhile.
“If a couple has a story, we can come up with a really cool combination that will bring them close to that story,” von Ballmoos said. ”If their rst date was apple picking, we have an apple vinegar. It's just really what is dear to them, what story they want to tell.”
Ultimately, putting a smile on the faces of guests as they leave after a long night of dining and dancing is the goal — and Fox believes a touch of personalization helps it to happen.
”I always look at the guest reaction to all of the things that we put into a day, and I've noticed that guests get really excited about things that are personalized to them,” Fox said, ”or things that are just different.”
She continued, “My main thing that I always try to drive home to people is not to do things out of obligation. Don't don't do things because you feel like you have to and choose items for favors randomly or haphazardly. I think favors can get a bad rap these days as being a useless item, but I think those instances are really in the cases where people were not thoughtful about the favors being chosen.”
While favors may not always be essential, a bit of nontraditional thinking can help couples reimagine them in a fresh way — resulting in a memorable gift their guests will cherish.
“When couples are looking for things to show gratitude to their guests for coming and celebrating,“ Fox said, “they might be surprised what could be a favor once they really start thinking about their story.”

GatherRound Round the table
Family style service adds a sense of community and highlights the cuisine
By Amy Zimmerman
Gather Round the table
Picture Thanksgiving dinner. You are seated at a table with family and friends. Guests serve themselves from platters and bowls of food that are passed around the table. Conversation is lively as friends and family connect over a shared meal. Now imagine that experience at a wedding reception.
“Couples who choose a family-style meal at their wedding are trying to get that feeling for their guests and give them a reason to interact. Having a conversation while passing food is a good way to get guests talking to each other,” says Casey Fechter, Director of Events for Olive + Oak Hospitality Group.
HOW IS IT DONE?
Having a family-style meal at your reception does not mean every course has to be passed around the table. Most couples still choose to have appetizers during cocktail hour served by tray or at stations.
The rst course, typically a salad, can be served either passed in a large bowl or served plated. Serving the salad plated offers bene ts. When guests come in to be seated for dinner the plated salads can already be on the table to help with timing. Also, bowls of salad can be messy so serving a plated salad helps maintain the integrity of the table.
The main part of the dinner service is served family style. Two or three proteins and sides such

as vegetables and starches are served in separate vessels for guests to pass around the table.
Couples may choose to have a printed menu but servers are trained to describe the dishes to the table as they present them to the table.
Desserts may be served family style but since not all guests will eat dessert it may be more ef cient to have a dessert station and allow guests to serve themselves. This also will get your guests mingling around the reception.
IS FAMILY STYLE RIGHT FOR ANY RECEPTION?
Family style service is a viable option between a buffet and a served, plated dinner. While caterers nd it is most common with small to mid-size weddings, it can be done for any number of guests.
“Your guests don’t have to get up and go through a buffet line, you can offer more options than a plated dinner and you get interaction among the guests,” says Cecily
Hof us, co-owner of Ces and Judy’s Catering.
“It’s a nice choice as long as you feel your guests will be comfortable with it.”
The main attraction is the unique experience and the intimate, personal touch it gives to the event.
“The typical client is someone who wants to achieve that family-oriented feel to the reception. For them, the dining experience is an integral part of the evening, not just something to get through so they can hit the dance oor,” says Bridget Bitza, Chief Revenue Of cer for Butler’s Pantry.
“Family style dinners are most common with clients who have food and beverage as a higher priority part of their reception,” says Fechter. Caterers suggest considering your guest list when deciding whether family style is right for your reception.
“The most important factor in deciding if family style is right for your reception is knowing your audience. It gives the reception

a homey, personal feel but works best when guests are familiar with each other. Couples should keep that in mind when planning the seating arrangement,” says Meredith Beck, Events and Catering Director for 612 North.
Cost varies among caterers. For some it costs more than a buffet but less than a plated dinner. For others family style can be a more expensive option due to the amount of food and service required.
HOW DOES SERVING FAMILY STYLE AFFECT THE MENU?
Serving a family style meal opens opportunities for unique dishes. Couples can work with their caterer to compose a meal that ts their personal preferences.
“You can do things in that situation that you can’t do with a plated meal. For example, you can serve a whole snapper on a platter. You can serve roasted quartered chicken. Even side dishes can be more curated. Instead of a side
of broccoli you can serve a dish of broccoli dressed with parmesan cheese, pine nuts and a vinaigrette,” says Brad Bardon, Executive Chef with The Social Affair.
While passing dishes around the table may seem less formal, the food served can be as elevated as the couple chooses.
“The food isn’t less fancy. In fact, family style gives us an opportunity to serve a wider variety of food than we could with a plated meal. We can move away from what guests typically expect from wedding food,” says Bardon.
While there is not an ideal cuisine that is best for family style but some dishes might be messier to pass and serve than others.
“For example, if we are serving a protein with a sauce we may add a starch underneath it to help catch the juices,” says Fechter.
WHAT ABOUT THE TABLES?
Tablescape is one of the biggest considerations when selecting family-style service. You have to

leave room for the dishes which means scaling down on the centerpieces.
“Platters and bowls take up a certain footprint on the table. Couples must keep in mind that we need space to serve the food,” says Bitza.
If elaborate centerpieces are a priority, family style might not be the best choice for your reception.
“One of the biggest concerns for us is the couple’s priorities in terms of tablescape. Family style meals require vessels. If you want a lush tablescape with orals, that will limit what you can serve. If the food is the star we expand your menu,” says Fechter.
Family-style meals can be served at rectangular tables or round tables but couples
need to consider the act of passing food and allow for conversation.
“You may pass to the person next to you but you may pass across the table. Couples should keep that in mind when considering owers and candles for centerpieces,” says Kara Bailey, CoOwner of Bailey’s Restaurants.
With family style service, the food is the focus of the table.
“Styling each platter and plate is a priority so the food actually becomes the centerpiece,” says Kelly Spencer, Founder of The Social Affair.
WILL THERE BE ENOUGH
FOOD?
Talk with your caterer about how they
determine the proper amount of food per table and how they handle replenishing empty platters. You can be certain your guests will not go hungry.
“We know how to properly estimate the quantity of food needed for each table so couples can be con dent their guests will have plenty of food,” says Beck.
While guests may be shy at rst about taking too much of any item, as the meal progresses that family feel sets in. One guest of a family style wedding meal said by the end of the dinner guests were passing around dishes asking who was going to take those nal delicious bites. Just like at that Thanksgiving meal.

MAKING IT LEGAL
Though procuring a wedding license isn’t quite as complicated as the wedding itself, it helps to know the rules. Here they are:
1.All applicants in Missouri and Illinois must receive a license before the ceremony; Saint Louis Bride recommends a minimum of 24 hours. Blood tests are not required in either state.
2.A Missouri license is valid for thirty days from its e ective date; an Illinois license for sixty days.
3.Both bride and groom must apply in person. In Missouri, you may apply for a license at any o ce provided the wedding is to take place within the state. In Illinois, you must apply for and receive a license from the county in which the ceremony will take place.

BEYOND THE DAY Words of Wisdom
Claire & Doug | Married 25 Years
Not every couple dreams of a big ballroom and a twelve-piece band. For Claire and Doug, simplicity, authenticity, and a deep friendship have always been at the heart of their story.
"WE WANTED LESS STRESS AND MORE MEANING."
Claire: By the time we got married, I was the last in my friend group to tie the knot. I’d watched so many of them pour their energy into planning, and stressing over their weddings. I knew that wasn’t for me. No bridal party, no big production. Just something simple and sincere.
Doug: We paid for everything ourselves, which gave us the freedom to do it our way. Our ceremony was in our of ciant’s backyard on DeTonty. It was intimate and just for immediate family. We hosted the reception at our house later that day. Our red heeler had to be on a leash so she wouldn’t try to herd the guests, but she was part of the family too, so of course she was there. It was perfect in its own, very us, kind of way.
LOOKING BACK, WOULD YOU HAVE DONE ANYTHING DIFFERENTLY?
Claire: Honestly? Yes. We’d originally wanted to elope or plan a small getaway, but we stayed local so my parents could be there. In the end, my mom wasn’t particularly thrilled with our plans, and my dad, bless him *get ready for it* started trimming his fingernails during the ceremony. Maybe it was nerves. Maybe it was just him. Either way, we learned the hard way: you can’t please everyone. You’ve got to stay true to what you want as a couple.
WHAT HAS MARRIAGE TAUGHT YOU OVER 25 YEARS?
Claire: That life will test you. Sometimes gently, sometimes relentlessly. We’ve been through a
lot: the loss of parents, career changes, the natural ebb and ow of friendships. But through it all, Doug has been the constant. He’s seen me through some of the hardest chapters of my life. And even now, I can't imagine facing any of it with anyone else.
Doug: That’s a beautiful answer. And true. The strength of our relationship has always been in showing up for each other—especially when things aren’t easy.
SO,
HOW DO YOU KEEP THE SPARK ALIVE?
Claire: We’re not the candlelit-dinner-and-rosepetals type. Never have been. For us, it’s the everyday gestures that mean the most. A shared cup of coffee. A funny text in the middle of the day. Knowing when to give each other space, and when to reach out. That kind of quiet romance lasts longer than grand gestures.
Doug: Yep. It’s the little things that carry you.
WHAT’S THE SECRET TO A LASTING MARRIAGE?
Doug: Keep the friendship alive. Marriage evolves; people evolve. You won’t be the same people in ten years, and that’s okay. If you’re friends, you can grow together. And let’s be honest, there’s a little luck involved too.
Claire: You’ve got to really like each other. Not just love, LIKE. That’s the glue when things get tough.
ANY PARTING ADVICE FOR COUPLES JUST STARTING OUT ON THEIR JOURNEY?
Claire: Expect change. Embrace it. And most importantly, grow together. Check in, talk often, and give each other the space to evolve.
Doug: Be honest. Be open. And never forget, you’re a team. Every choice, every challenge, every triumph is shared. That mindset changes everything.
