Merry & Bright ’Tis the season for Seattle’s magical holiday celebrations. By Haley Shapley A little holiday cheer is never hard to find in Seattle, where the festive feeling casts a warm glow on the city all December long. For tidings of comfort and joy, look no further than a packed calendar of seasonal events.

ENCHANT CHRISTMAS ICE SKATING

Where Now

Light It Up

When the Mariners are away, the elves come out to play. In T-Mobile Park, Enchant is back this year to transform the stadium into a larger-than-life winter wonderland, the centerpiece of which is a giant light maze with a 100-foot-tall pine tree. Among the luminescence, try to find the gifts misplaced by the mischievous Eddie the Elf.

A second light maze in the city is new this year, inside Pier 91’s Smith Cove Cruise Terminal. Lumaze, an indoor Christmas festival and market, promises more than two million twinkling lights, a trackless train to hop on, seasonal food and beverages and all the selfie opportunities your Instagram account could crave.

For an outdoor lights celebration, take a walk on the wild side. Faux snowball fights, historic carousel rides, nocturnal animal encounters and 800,000 energy-efficient LED lights make Woodland Park Zoo’s WildLights (open most evenings from Nov. 29–Jan. 5) a wildly fantastic place to celebrate the season.

Tried-and-True Traditions For more than 40 years, the Seattle Festival of Trees has auctioned off themed Christmas trees to benefit Seattle Children’s Hospital. Catch the designer trees in the lobby of the Fairmont Olympic Hotel until Dec. 4. If you can’t make it until later in the month, you can still see the hotel’s Teddy Bear Suite and life-size, walk-through gingerbread house. For even more gingerbread, the Sheraton Grand Seattle’s Gingerbread Village is always a sweet diversion. Culinary wizards and architects team up to create

12

W HERETRAVELER ® SEATTLE

these amazingly intricate creations that vie for best gingerbread house on the block, and this year, they’ll be inspired by the theme #ElfLife. Be a more active participant in the holiday cheer by jingling all the way through a 12k, 5k, or 1-mile race during the Jingle Bell Run, which leaves from Westlake Park. Jingle bells are included in each registration entry, so there’s no excuse not to make some joyous and merry noise. Kids will get a kick out of the Swansons Reindeer Festival

at Swansons Nursery, through Dec. 24, when they get to meet Santa’s helpers themselves. In addition to palling around with Dasher and Blitzen, take a photo inside a decorated yurt and shop the central greenhouse filled with holiday décor galore. Seattle Center’s Winterfest—five weeks of festivities from Nov. 29 to Dec. 3— is another all-ages favorite, with a turn-of-the-century model village and train, a pop-up ice-skating rink, live performances on the weekends and ice sculptors on Saturdays.

Where Now

There’s no better way to get in the holiday spirit than by being swept up in the fantastical world of “George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker” as performed by Pacific Northwest Ballet in McCaw Hall, which always gets gussied up for the season. For a totally different twist on the classic tale, The Triple Door hosts an adults-only burlesque version of “The Nutcracker” called “Land of the Sweets.” In this production, the music gets a jazz

14

W HERETRAVELER ® SEATTLE

makeover and the characters are more naughty than nice. Across the street in Benaroya Hall, the Seattle Symphony hosts a number of holiday-related shows throughout December, including “A Festival of Lessons & Carols” on Dec. 23, which features the angelic voices of the Northwest Boychoir and Vocalpoint! Seattle recounting the story of the Nativity. For outdoor singing, wander through The Great Figgy Pudding

Caroling Competition on Dec. 6 in Westlake Center, when the streets are packed with impromptu singing groups. Or reserve a ticket for the Argosy Cruises Christmas Ship Festival, which has celebrated caroling by water since 1949—a very Seattle thing to do. Hop aboard the Christmas Ship for a two- to three-hour cruise, complete with Santa photos, an onboard choir and a reading of “Twas the Night Before Christmas.”

Deck The Halls

Gift Fair & Art Market at the Duwamish Longhouse and Cultural Center in West Seattle, running two weekends (Nov. 29–Dec. 1 and Dec. 13–15). If you need something for the nerds in your life, the GeekCraft Expo Holiday Market from Nov. 30 to Dec. 1 at Magnuson Park’s Hangar 30 offers up handcrafted items like crocheted creature stocking stuffers, steampunk jewelry and wooden jigsaw puzzles. And for all the unique, highquality, can’t-get-that-anywhere-

else items you could dream up, the Urban Craft Uprising Winter Show always delivers. Now in its 15th year, this market is the largest indie craft event in the Pacific Northwest. Visit the Seattle Center Exhibition Hall from Dec. 6–8 to stock up on handcrafted board games, surrealist paintings on salvaged wood, quirky children’s books and so much more. Later in the week, drop by the South Lake Union Winter Market (Dec. 11 and 12) for a second chance at shopping.

Beyond Christmas Beginning on Dec. 22 this year, Hanukkah lasts for eight nights; look for giant outdoor menorahs, accompanying lighting celebrations and Hanukkah related activities around town in spots like downtown’s Westlake Park, Ballard’s Bergen Place Park and Kirkland’s Marina Park.

After welcoming 2020 with a bang by watching the New Year’s at the Needle fireworks show, start this next decade off right with the Resolution Run & Polar Bear Dive at Magnuson Park on Jan. 1. Jump into Lake Washington 100 yards before the finish line for some extra mojo to carry into 2020. NEW YEAR’S AT THE NEEDLE

16

W HERETRAVELER ® SEATTLE

Downtown Seattle’s department stores always get decked out for the holidays, but there are plenty of smaller places to pick up presents, too. In Westlake Park, take a spin on the vintage carousel and browse the Holiday Market (weekends from Thanksgiving through Christmas), featuring a curated group of makers in the style of a German winter market. For locally made gifts including wood carvings, beadwork, drums and paintings, grab some frybread and shop the Duwamish Native

With a plethora of dining options downtown, it’s difficult to go wrong, but few combine local ingredients with Greek fare the way Lola’s does—with brunch served on the weekends until 3 pm. Afterwards, enjoy a sweet Italian gelato at Gelatiamo, or grab a bite at one of the many food trucks stationed in Westlake Park.

If you need to check holiday shopping off of your to-do list, look no further than Westlake Center, as this shopping destination features a collection of retail options that includes LUSH, Zara, Pandora and more—and sits adjacent to Macy’s and Nordstrom Rack. Need more retail therapy? Pike Place Market is just a hop, skip and a jump away west on Pike Street.

For on-stage entertainment and drinks on the side, The Triple Door is an intimate live music venue with a food and beverage menu that features handcrafted concoctions and classic cocktails. Across form Westlake Park, Yard House features a sports bar with TVs and New American cuisine. Happy Hour is from 3-6 pm, M-F; Late Night Happy Hour is 10 pm-close, Su-W.
