Dar She Blows! It’s that time of the year when our famous visitors return to our warm waters. Every winter, humpback whales migrate from Alaska to Hawai‘i, a journey that’s about 3,000 miles. Odds are favorable that you’ll spot one of these massive mammals during a whale-watching tour (pages 12-13). The next few months also mean larger—and more treacherous—

DURING ANCIENT TIMES

Native Hawaiians lived on the wind-swept slopes of Maui’s great mountain, Haleakalā. Their land stretched down to a fertile sea filled with fish. These waters were said to be the home of Lea, the goddess of canoe builders. The word wai, Hawaiian for water, was combined with the name Lea to signify the Waters of Lea and what is now known as the luxury playground of Wailea. There’s only one place in Hawai‘i where natural beauty and modern luxury combine in such a way. Half an hour from the airport, between the ocean and

Wailea Resort Haleakalā, Wailea Resort attracts discerning guests with its lifestyle of easy glamour. In 1,500 acres by the sea, condominiums, villas, private homes and five luxury hotels have found their place in the sun. This is Maui’s shopping and dining nexus, with art around every corner. Because shops and galleries go hand in hand, art and retail are vital partners throughout Wailea Resort. The Shops at Wailea, Grand Wailea shopping arcade, and unique galleries and boutiques make this the premier destination for retail and art connoisseurs. There are five golden

beaches and a collection of restaurants for all tastes. Children’s programs engage the keiki (kids), while parents enjoy three storied golf courses, a tennis academy and a shimmering ocean playground. From the mile-and-a-half coastal walk, three offshore islands and the West Maui Mountains leisurely scroll into view. Ocean craft dot the horizon as outrig-

ger canoes, catamarans and sailboats celebrate the good life. Wailea is as green as they come, too: The Shops at Wailea has received the Greenguard Indoor Air Quality Certification, and other resort partners pursue aggressive environmental initiatives. Green, Gold and Blue describe more than the golf courses. They’re the Wailea way of life.

The waters between Maui and the neighboring islands of Moloka‘i, Lāna’i and Kaho’olawe are teeming with thousands of humpback whales right now, and you can venture on the high seas to watch these massive mammals breach, slap their tails and flukes against the water, and see water spout from their blowholes as they breathe and surface for air. 12 W H E R E C I T Y N A M E I M O N T H Y E A R

Whale of a Time As many as 10,000 whales could be in the area over the course of the season, and since adult humpbacks surface about every 10-15 minutes to breathe, and calves need to come up for air about every 3-5 minutes, so it’s a guarantee there will never be a dull moment while on a whalewatching tour. Humpback whales are also known for the mysterious and haunting sounds they make underwater, called “whale songs.” These complex songs vary in frequency, and scientists are still trying to understand why the humpbacks “sing,” sometimes continuously for hours.

OCEAN SAFETY Enjoy Maui’s beaches, but be aware of the water conditions. Here are some guidelines to follow to make sure you stay safe.

» Watch the ocean before you go in. And never turn your back to it.

» If the beach has lifeguards, ask about the water conditions. Pay attention to warning signs.

» If you are unfamiliar with the shoreline or aren’t confident in the water, only swim at beaches where there is a lifeguard. Know your limits.

It’s tempting to set up camp at your nearest beach and stay put, soaking in a soul-nourishing blend of sunshine and sea water. But if you’re ready to take to the road, explore and marvel at the different colors and textures that make up Maui’s diverse beaches, go for it. One caution: be sure to always heed all warnings from lifeguards.

or swim, pay attention to where the water is taking you. And always snorkel with a buddy.

Golden Granules Maui’s idyllic and varied coastline is naturally one of the island’s main attractions. Scientist Stephen P. Leatherman, famously known as “Dr. Beach,” has named several of Maui’s beaches as “America’s Best” over the years, including Kapalua’s DT Fleming Beach, Kā‘anapali Beach, Wailea Beach and Kapalua Bay Beach. Tucked between Kā’anapali and Kapalua, kid-friendly Nāpili Bay features pristine golden sand with nary a rock to stub a tiny toe, while Nāpili Point and Honokeana Cove attract honu, green sea turtles. Kahana Beach is a longer stretch that varies from soft sand to rocky outcroppings, perfect for tidepool discoveries and close-in snorkeling. Other beaches not to miss are Kīhei’s Kama‘ole Beach Parks in South Maui, offering fine-grain sand, great swimming and public amenities and the untamed, beautiful terrain of Mākena Beach. During the winter, Ho’okipa Beach is ablaze in colorful sails carving amazing tracks through the water. Over in East Maui, Wai‘anapanapa State Park is home to dramatic sea caves and a striking black sand beach, and Hāmoa Beach, near the Hotel Hāna Maui, is lush and even more secluded. 14 W H E R E M AU I I FA L L / W I N T E R 201 7 - 2018

CHEF TALK

'Scheer' Genius Fellow chefs Sheldon Simeon and Isaac Bancaco consider him one of the best chefs on Maui. And for the past two past years, Jeff Scheer (pictured right) has amassed a loyal following at The Mill House, and with success comes multiple kudos and awards. “I think success is being responsible for doing something you believe in,” says Scheer in an interview at millhousemaui.com. “That is what makes this place so special.” Others would say it’s the “rustic refined” cuisine, which includes such dishes as braised pork shank, hand-cut pasta with beef ragu and a savory cioppino that rivals any similar dish in San Francisco. One of the best ways to experience Scheer's culinary genius is to attend his Maui Chef's Table, which occurs on select weekend evenings. Market Trends He’s done it again. Just when you think he’s done, he opens another restaurant … and yet another new concept. Since opening his first eponymous restaurant on O‘ahu in 1998, Roy Yamaguchi has set a blazing pace unmatched by any other restaurateur. His presence now expands the globe but Hawai‘i will always be special. With Humble Market Kitchin, Yamaguchi traces his family roots, which started on the plantations of Maui, capturing the sweet and savory flavors he recalls from his childhood. “It brings me great joy to return to Maui, a beloved island that helped nurture my love of cooking and introduced me to the bounty of the sea and local purveyors,” he says. The menu pays tribute to these influences through signature offerings, such as a special poke recipe prepared tableside, signature ramen and charred beef tenderloin. After visiting several similar establishments on the mainland, Dave “D.K.” Kodama warmed to the idea that his new casual eatery was indeed a gastro-and-pub rolled into one. “We have craft beers and whiskey, which accounts for the pub part,” Kodama says. “And we definitely have the ‘gastro’ covered." Like most gastropub fare, the food at Shearwater Tavern in Kīhei is hearty, comforting and meaty. The Shearwater burger, for example, is stacked with Hawai‘i Ranchers beef, crispy bacon, cheese, garlic aioli, caramelized onion jam and a fresh sunny-side-up egg for good measure. As a nod to Britain’s St. John’s chef Fergus Henderson—considered the modern-day inspiration for the cuisine found at many gastropubs—the oven-roasted bone marrow is simply baked until hot in the middle then served with crostini and mixed greens. Wash it all down with a pint of Firestone Walker. Azeka Mauka Shopping Center, 1279 South Kīhei Rd., 808.793.2324

NEIGHBORHOODS

Kahului is Maui’s busiest port and most populous metro area. This bustling town of some 20,000 people is usually the first city visitors to Maui see after touching down at nearby Kahului Airport. Kahului contains worthwhile attractions, including the Maui Arts & Cultural Center, one of the island’s premier venues for concerts, art exhibitions and valuable resources for Polynesian culture. Also take time to visit the Maui Nui Botanical Gardens and the Kanahā Pond Wildlife Sanctuary, where you can amble among the exotic tropical landscape and view species of endemic birds and animals. An essential stop is the 1,800-hundred-square foot Alexander & Baldwin Sugar Museum.

Kā‘anapali In the 1960s, as developers built West Maui resorts to rival Waikīkī’s, Kā‘anapali experienced a surge of popularity. It’s easy to see why this former sugar plantation was chosen: its beaches. At the north end, Kahekili Beach is great for snorkeling. Along the length of the resort, Kā‘anapali Beach is lined with swank hotels that have made West Maui a top destination. One of Kā‘anapali’s signature attractions, Pu‘u Keka‘a (Black Rock) is a unique outcropping of lava surrounded by thriving coral reef. While divers and snorkelers savor the underwater sights, landlubbers enjoy the mile-long oceanfront walkway or the Kā‘anapali Historic Trail, a two-hour journey that includes 10 points of interest reached on foot.

WAILUKU Tucked into the foothills of the West Maui mountains, Wailuku is the island’s municipal center and is a gorgeous landscape of lush vegetation, exotic botanicals and postcard-perfect settings. Situated among the ‘Iao Valley State Park

streams of the Nā Wai ‘Ehā (four waters) and the Lo‘i (irrigated

THE GUIDE

Navigate

Snorkeling Safari Molokini is an underwater fantasy: 80-degree turquoise waters and exotic marine life around a tiny, crescent-shaped islet located three miles off the southwest coast of Maui. Potential snorkelers should note that the island is divided into three sections known as Reef’s End, Middle Reef and Tako Flats.

EXPEDITIONS— Daily round-trip ferry

service between Maui and Lanai, with five departures from Lahaina Harbor on Maui and five from Manele Harbor on Lanai. Visit their website or call for reservations. go-lanai.com. For more information and schedules, call 808.661.3756. ROAD TO HANA— The small town of

Hana is isolated from the rest of the island, and the epic drive here on the Hana Highway is one of the most scenic in the entire state. The highway has more than 600 curves and 50 bridges and passes lush rainforests, cascading waterfalls and seaside cliffs. Call for daily road reports 808.248.7800.

First Look HALEAKALA— One of Hawai‘i’s biggest

attractions is the stunning 10,000-foot Haleakala, the world’s largest dormant

volcano. Haleakala’s most magnificent feature is the crater itself: 3,000 feet deep, 2.5 miles across and a circumference of 21 miles. nps.gov/hale/index. htm. LAHAINA— The most frequently visited

spot on the island, Lahaina is the only town in leeward Maui with a genuine downtown. Its primary draw is Front Street, a crowded main drag where a variety of restaurants, shops and hideaway cafes tucked into side streets create a maze of quirky charm. PAIA— Once an plantation town centered

on Hawaiian Commercial & Sugar Company, today Paia enjoys status as one of the top windsurfing destinations in the world. At nearby Hookipa Beach Park—host of the annual Aloha Classic Wave Championships, the crown jewel of wave sailing events—sailboarders perform complex aerial maneuvers. Not surprisingly, Paia boasts at least a dozen surf shops where you can buy

sport gear and board accessories. There is a wide range of chic cafes, juice bars and vegan restaurants plus shops sporting hemp-made products, East Indian imports and funky galleries catering to this community of mellowyet-obsessive outdoor enthusiasts. A mile or so before entering Paia, you will encounter the Rinzai Buddhist Temple on Alawai Road, while on the eastern outskirts lies the Mantokuji Buddhist Mission, both of which complement the town’s holistic vibe. paiamaui.com.

Transportation MAUI BUS— The Maui Bus has eleven

routes. The Kihei Islander Route connects Wailea, Kihei, Maalaea Harbor and Kahului; the Lahaina Islander links Kahului, Maalaea Harbor and Lahaina; The Kaanapali Islander Route connects Lahaina with the resorts at Kaanapali. Fare for each line is $2. co.maui.hi.us. For route and timetable information, please call 808.871.4838.

With its microclimates, fertile volcanic soil and year-round sunshine, Maui has slowly become a mecca for breweries, distilleries and wineries. (1) Founded in 1974, Maui Winery is the island’s sole commercial winery that produces a varied selection of wines, including its coveted raspberry dessert wine. (2) Cherries, lilikoi and papaya seeds may be common ingredients found in a chef’s pantry, but they’re now also starting to show up on labels at Maui Brewing Company. (3) For a locally inspired mai tai, be sure to try Haleakalā Distillers’ Maui Gold Rum.

For those who seek an adrenaline rush, there’s no shortage of ways to get your heart pumping on Maui. (1) Piiholo Ranch Zipline offers Maui’s longest side-by-side zipline—running more than a half-mile long. Enjoy coastal and canyon views as you zip through a lush Hawaiian forest. (2) Surf Yoga Maui combines the two disciplines to help you breath deeper, combat fear and achieve the kind of bliss that only riding a wave or pressing into your first headstand can provide. (3) Take a day trip to Lāna‘i aboard the new ferry Expeditions Six.

Farm tours in Maui have grown exponentially, as food and nature lovers want to learn more about the land and the people who take care of it. (1) Perched within the forest of Waipoli in Upcountry, Maui, O‘o Farm welcomes those willing to open their minds and hearts to a new concept in the farm-to-table movement. (2) Kula Country Farms yields some of the juiciest strawberries, and sweetest onions and corn. (3) Visitors come to Ali‘i Kula Lavender Farm to experience its unique and fragrant herb acreage, and to bask in guided walking or cart tours.
