Not a fan of black diamond slopes?

If you’d prefer to relax on big-smile cruisers over easy-turning snow on wide boulevards down thousands of feet of vertical, Tahoe is also your place. Here you’ll find the longest, prettiest, smoothest intermediate runs imaginable, most of them looking out over breathtaking scenery.

Want more than world-class skiing and snowboarding?

Then Tahoe is absolutely your place! Whether it’s award-winning spas, unique and fine dining, shopping and brewpubs, 24-hour casinos, shows and live music, art, history and science museums, and Old West towns and lake cruises, no ski destination on earth matches the variety of fun at Lake Tahoe. Tahoe is also your place if convenience and value are part of a perfect winter vacation (we think they are). Reno-Tahoe International Airport offers direct flights from 16 cities, including Los Angeles, San Diego, Dallas, Chicago, Minneapolis and New York. One of the country’s most convenient airports, it’s mere steps from plane to baggage claim, car rental and shuttle services at Reno-Tahoe International. Reno lodging is just 10 minutes away and it’s less than an hour to ski slopes and slope-side accommodations. With jaw-dropping scenery around every turn, adventure in all directions and people from around the world to meet and share the fun, a Lake Tahoe winter vacation will rejuvenate and relax you, not to mention fill up your smart phone with photos and videos to relive the great times for years to come.

Land of ski and snowboard champions, huge mountains, big snow and even bigger blue skies—from hosting the 1960 Winter Olympics to today, Lake Tahoe has been on the bucket lists of skiers and snowboarders around the world. The site of the first organized ski races in the country and of the world’s first snowboard half-pipe, Lake Tahoe has a rich history of winter sports. Local skiers and snowboarders have excelled on the world stage for many decades—in the last Winter Olympics, Reno-Tahoe athletes took home three gold medals and a bronze! Want to challenge the same double-black diamond runs and super-pipes ridden by Olympians Shaun White, Jonny Moseley, Jamie Anderson, David Wise and Julia Mancuso? You’ll find them at Lake Tahoe.

Whatever your skiing and riding passion—powder, steeps, perfect grooming, halfpipes, terrain parks, glade and tree skiing—you’ll find it and more at Lake Tahoe.

SQUAW VALLEY / ALPINE MEADOWS Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows offer visitors some of North America’s most celebrated ski and snowboard terrain, including the 1960 Winter Olympic runs. The adjacent areas (connected via free, 10-minute shuttle rides) offer 8,400 acres of terrain, the most in North America. Turn to page 24 for more information. HEAVENLY With Tahoe’s highest summit elevation and longest vertical drop, Heavenly’s immense variety of skiing spreads into two states, including five-mile runs, awesome views, and a legendary après-ski scene. There’s plenty of slope-side accommodation available, too. Turn to page 14 for more information. KIRKWOOD High elevation and a location atop the crest of the Sierra Nevada Range give Kirkwood the lightest, driest, most plentiful snow on the West Coast. Here you’ll find small town ambience combined with big mountain skiing. Turn to page 16 for more information. MT ROSE-SKI TAHOE With its slopes only a 25-minute drive from Reno-Tahoe International, Mt. Rose is incredibly convenient for those wanting to squeeze more quality slope-time into their vacation. High elevation and over 60 trails make Mt. Rose a local’s favorite. Turn to page 18 for more information. NORTHSTAR CALIFORNIA This luxury, all-season resort has plentiful on-slope accommodations and easy access to 3,170 acres of long, impeccably groomed runs, glades and tree-skiing. Named “Best Mountain for Families” by Outside Magazine, Northstar also excels at terrain parks and half-pipes. Turn to page 20 for more information. SIERRA-AT-TAHOE Home to three Olympic Gold Medalists, Sierra is committed to maintaining an authentic, laid-back Tahoe atmosphere while delivering first-rate services. Located on the Sierra Crest, the resort has plentiful snowfall and gladed forests to ski through. Turn to page 22 for more information.

Ski Villages and Towns Find your perfect combination of excitement, convenience and coziness

NORTH SHORE The north shore of Lake Tahoe is a charming mix of small ski towns and lakefront lodging in California and larger hotel-resorts and Nevada-style action in Incline Village and Crystal Bay. Tahoe City, Kings Beach and Homewood are all California-side, lakefront towns with a variety of lodging and many excellent restaurant choices. Ski shuttles connect north shore hotels to Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows, Northstar California, Mt. Rose-Ski Tahoe and other nearby ski resorts. VILLAGE AT SQUAW VALLEY This ski village is nestled up to the western end of lovely Olympic Valley at the bottom of Squaw Valley’s slopes, with a half a dozen lifts stretching in multiple directions. The lively village has multiple restaurants, shops, galleries and indoor and outdoor watering holes steps from every ski slope. Nearby are other lodging choices, as well as cross-country ski trails and two ice rinks. Shuttles run from Squaw Valley to nearby Alpine Meadows ski area. VILLAGE AT NORTHSTAR A self-contained ski village offers multiple, luxurious lodging choices at the base of Northstar California. All skier and rider

services are only steps away from accommodations, restaurants, bars, fire pits and an ice-skating rink in the village. Additional slopeside lodging options are nearby, including higher on the mountain, connected to the village via gondola. While many will want to just relax and enjoy all the amenities within reach, a short drive or shuttle ride connects Northstar to Truckee or North Tahoe communities. KIRKWOOD VILLAGE For those wanting a true getaway in a Sierra mountain paradise, Kirkwood has great on-slope lodging and a peaceful, relaxed ambience. Cross-country skiing and dog-sled rides are nearby in Kirkwood’s beautiful, high-alpine valley. The village center has dining and drinking options, or visit historic Kirkwood Inn—serving happy customers since 1864. TRUCKEE The Old West railroad town of Truckee is alive with new restaurants, shops, galleries and bars. There are a number of lodging choices in and around Truckee, with shuttles to nearby ski resorts Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows, Northstar, Sugar Bowl and other downhill and cross-country resorts. Less than three miles away is Donner Memorial State Park, commemorating the pioneers who crossed the Sierra here on their California journey. RENO This famous resort city has revitalized downtown and midtown areas and makes a great non-snow addition to a ski and snowboard vacation. Flying in or out of the Reno-Tahoe International Airport, you’ll find fantastic lodging values at countless award-winning resort/casino/hotels with endless dining, entertainment, spa and gaming options. Reno also has great museums and unique restaurants, many of them clustered in the scenic Riverwalk district.

TAHOE SOUTH / STATELINE Lake Tahoe’s South Shore has a huge variety of lodging options for every budget. In the center of Heavenly Village, a gondola provides direct-to-upper-mountain access only steps from numerous lodging properties and Stateline, NV, casino hotels. Heavenly resort’s California-base aerial tram and Nevada-base chairlifts also have lodging nearby. The slopes of Sierra-at-Tahoe and Kirkwood ski resorts are within a 35-minute drive of South Lake Tahoe. For something completely different, add a lake cruise to your itinerary. Or go big for après ski: Catch a show, play the tables and hit the dance floor until it’s time for first chair.

Lake Tahoe didn’t become one of America’s top vacation destinations being one-dimensional. Yes, the skiing and snowboarding are world renowned, but that’s just the start of a feast of fun options. DINING Come hungry—a full plate of restaurant choices awaits in all the major ski towns here, menus and atmospheres from casual to elegant, all-you-can-eat to fusion gourmet. At the fine dining end, this region boasts a long heritage. European chefs were attracted here by the 1960 Olympics. Their continental flavors were joined years later by early adopters of the New Cuisine movement, which flowered just over the Sierra in Northern California. Recently, a next generation of chefs has opened restaurants and brought a new level of energy and options. Food truck or white tablecloth, the quality of ingredients sourced by Reno-Tahoe restaurants is unmatched. The fields of California’s Central Valley—America’s Produce Basket—are just west of Lake Tahoe, as are the fisheries of the Pacific Ocean. So whether you’re savoring vegetables, fruit, meat, seafood or wine, get ready to say “yummm!” NIGHTLIFE No destination matches the combination of world-class skiing with world-famous entertainment found at Lake Tahoe and Reno. Awardwinning resort casino hotels dot the Nevada side of Tahoe—spots that rock 24/7 with gaming, headliner shows, cabarets, dance clubs and cocktail lounges. Great nightlife is not limited to casinos, however. Tahoe ski towns are home to numerous watering holes, live music venues, wine bars and brewpubs. And if you want to see stars you can’t see on a stage, take an evening walk in the Sierra, where the clear Pacific air reveals a heavenly show. SPORTS Winter sports options extend past skiing and snowboarding to crosscountry skiing at some of America’s largest resorts, tours through national forests, snowshoe trails and both indoor and outdoor iceskating rinks. Tubing or sledding hills are found at Heavenly, Squaw Valley, Northstar California, Kirkwood and other Tahoe locations. For activities not usually associated with ski vacations, go on a fishing charter on Lake Tahoe’s deep waters, take a glider ride over Sierra mountaintops or race 40-mph electric carts on an indoor track in Reno. Later in the ski season, golf courses open up at the lower elevations of the Carson Valley and Reno, river rafting starts in the Sierra foothills and rock climbing routes dry out on granite Sierra cliffs. Up for a multiple sport day?

SHOPPING ADVENTURE Does shopping and snowboarding qualify as a two-sport day for you? Numerous boutiques and shops are found just off the slopes in Heavenly Village and Squaw Valley. Both Tahoe City and Truckee are home to unique clothing and sporting goods stores as well as art galleries and souvenir, games and cooking shops. Reno broadens the selection immensely. The Biggest Little City boasts three large malls as well as multiple discount outlets. Try Scheels and Cabela’s for the sporting crowd; the hipsters and bargain hunters can find an excellent array of vintage and used clothing stores clustered in Reno’s Midtown. PUB CRAWLS Brewpubs and craft breweries dot this destination, many within strolling distance. In Reno’s Downtown, a dozen excellent pubs and bars are clustered within blocks of each other, serving up award-winning beers and craft spirits. South Lake Tahoe and Truckee offer multiple brewpubs with unique and extensive selections on tap. Those of the wine persuasion may be tempted to extend their Tahoe winter vacation with a visit to the Zinfandel vineyards of Amador County, just over the mountains. MUSEUMS Are your interests drawn to fine art or the Batmobile? Reno is home to both, with the excellent Nevada Museum of Art and the National Automobile Museum. Find the Nevada State Museum and National Mint in Carson City, and the Gatekeeper’s Museum and the Tahoe Maritime Museum in Tahoe City. Visit the estate grounds from the Gilded Age at the Tallac Historic Site in South Lake Tahoe, and see interactive exhibits and 3D movies at the Tahoe Science Center in Incline Village. Or walk in the footsteps of the pioneers at Truckee’s Donner Memorial State Park and Museum. Who knew a ski trip could be so enlightening? SIGHTSEEING Emerald Bay is one of the most photographed places on earth— a teardrop bay dotted with one perfect island topped by a stone teahouse. During winter, you can snowshoe down to Vikingsholm Castle on the lakeshore. The drive to and from Emerald Bay is breathtaking whether traveling from South or North Tahoe. Ringed by a mantle of white snow, the lake’s rich hues of blue, turquoise and azure are even more vibrant during winter. Take a stroll along the Riverwalk in Downtown Reno. Paths on both sides of the Truckee River wind between shops and restaurants to Wingfield Park and its world-class Whitewater Park. There is rarely snow at Reno’s lower elevation (4,000+ feet below the mountain tops), so on sunny winter days you may even catch kayakers flipping through the river’s large standing waves. For equally memorable sights, take a cruise on Lake Tahoe on a calm winter day, go for a horse-drawn sleigh ride or head out into an open mountain valley behind a dogsled team. Consider yourself warned: Reno-Tahoe offers too much fun for just one winter vacation.

Old West Journeys Not far from Lake Tahoe’s natural beauty and Reno’s modern comforts lies the rugged Wild West. Thanks to a discovery of gold and silver ore in 1859, Virginia City became a boisterous boomtown. Today, it’s remarkably well-preserved and entertaining with antique shops, Western apparel stores and museums, including the Mark Twain Museum. (Sam Clemens got his start as a writer at a Virginia City newspaper.) The city is not lacking for saloons—stop by the Delta Saloon to see the famous Suicide Table or the Bucket of Blood for music and locals decked out in period attire. Nevada’s capital, Carson City, is home to the 1870 State Capitol building, the Nevada State Railroad Museum and the Nevada State Museum. The latter includes the historic U.S. Mint, established in 1863 and one of only seven in the country. Thirsty? Head to Genoa’s Genoa Bar, the state’s “Oldest Thirst Parlor,” which has served presidents like Teddy Roosevelt and singers like Johnny Cash. Genoa’s Mormon Station Memorial State Park commemorates Nevada’s fi rst permanent settlement in 1851.

Getting Around With so much to see, ski and do, better stay another day! The great naturalist John Muir wrote, “Tahoe is surely not one but many.” Exploring the many Tahoes is a delight for visitors to this area, whether by shuttle, private vehicle or rental car. After all, you’ll find some of the most scenic roads on earth in Lake Tahoe. No matter what means of transport you choose, you won’t need to travel far to experience an exciting variety of sights, sounds and slopes. South Lake Tahoe and North Lake Tahoe are both “complete” destinations, with multiple ski resorts and a full range of lodging, dining and entertainment. Yet each community is unique in its own way—one of the Reno-Tahoe region’s signature charms— from historic mountain resort towns to full-service ski villages. Lake Tahoe can be reached by car via two U.S. interstate highways. On the north side, Interstate 80 heads west from Reno or east from Sacramento, connecting with two roads in Truckee that lead to Lake Tahoe: California Routes 89 and 267. To the south, Interstate 50 leads into Tahoe from Sacramento to the west and Carson City to the east. Skiers and riders who opt for accommodation in Reno have less than an hour drive to multiple ski resorts. Those staying in the

54 Skier and Boarder Winter Vacation Guide 15|16

mountains often have the choice of two or more ski resorts within minutes of their lodging. Ski resort shuttles pick up and drop off from major lodging properties and central locations around Tahoe’s mountain towns. Longer shuttles are available for skiers or riders wanting to sample resorts on the opposite side of the lake. All major car rental companies are represented at Reno-Tahoe International Airport, with three routes leading to ski country. Rental vehicles are also available at two general aviation airports. Truckee Tahoe Airport services private plane and charter flights headed for North Tahoe while Lake Tahoe Airport is within the city limits of South Lake Tahoe. To take in all the scenic sides of “The Lake of the Sky,” plan on about a two-hour drive around Lake Tahoe’s 72-mile circumference. The route is open throughout winter, experiencing only temporary closures around Emerald Bay after large snowstorms. While Tahoe’s main transportation routes are kept clear of snow in all but the worst weather, those renting a car might still consider a four-wheel drive option or make sure that tire chains are provided with their vehicle.

Sizzle Your Visit Reno-Tahoe hops all winter with headliner shows, fun events and après-ski action.

There’s always something special going on here! Want to catch a star on the big stage? Headliners play the major casino showrooms throughout the winter. Want to carry the exciting vibe of the slopes into the evening? You’ll find the best après-ski action in the snow world in Lake Tahoe. Heavenly’s Unbuckle Après Party at Tamarack Lodge was rated the number one après-ski party in North America by Forbes magazine, and the resort rocks weekend afternoons with music and dancing. Numerous ski runs empty into the watering holes, restaurants and patios of Village at Squaw Valley as the lifts close. When it’s time to celebrate the day’s adventures, The Village at Northstar, Kirkwood Village, Sierra-at-Tahoe and Mt. Rose-Ski Tahoe have both outdoor seating and cozy indoor spots to kick back, relax and start your evening.
