Come, discover the unique culture and vibe of our island. St. Croix is home to historical sites, gorgeous beaches, resorts, golf courses, and a culinary scene named the 2025 Caribbean Culinary Destination of the Year. We can’t wait to warmly welcome you to our part of America’s Caribbean paradise.
Greetings, Friends and Visitors, Welcome to St. Croix, the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, spanning 84 square miles of stunning beaches, lush hillsides, tropical rainforests, and breathtaking vistas.
Steeped in history, our island’s twin towns of Christiansted and Frederiksted invite you to step back in time at landmarks like Fort Christiansvaern and Fort Frederik, monuments to the diverse cultural tapestry that defines both St. Croix and the entire Territory.
Whether you’re drawn to charming boutique hotels, luxurious resorts, or intimate bed-and-breakfasts, you’ll be embraced by the warmth and hospitality of the Crucian people, who embody our signature “Vibe Like No Other.”
Recently named the Caribbean’s top culinary hotspot by Caribbean Journal, St. Croix offers flavors shaped by global influences, from Caribbean and Amerindian to Spanish, Dutch, French, and American.
For adventurers, the island is a playground: hike through rainforests, kayak along mangroves, ride horseback on the beach, set sail on turquoise waters, tee off on scenic courses, or dive beneath the waves. With world-class snorkeling and scuba diving, including Buck Island, the only naturally occurring underwater National Monument in the U.S., you can even experience five unique dives in a single day. At dawn, early risers are rewarded with the first sunrise in America at Point Udall, the easternmost point of the U.S.
St. Croix comes alive year-round with vibrant celebrations, from our monthlong Crucian Christmas Festival, complete with a dazzling Boat Parade and Crucian Christmas Festival, to a calendar filled with cultural fairs and community events.
On behalf of the Department of Tourism, we welcome you to explore, savor, and celebrate with us. May your time on St. Croix be unforgettable, and we look forward to your return!

Welcome to our beautiful Virgin Islands of the United States. Our islands are unique in what they each offer and our communities are filled with people who are proud of our storied history. While visiting, I encourage you to immerse yourself in our culture and to explore the unique offerings of all four Islands that make up our paradise.
St. Croix, the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, sits to the south of our small island chain and is renowned for its pastoral landscapes, Danish architecture and historical landmarks. With its offshore wrecks and unbelievably beautiful underwater reefs, St. Croix is also a popular destination for diving enthusiasts. Be sure to visit the historic towns of Frederiksted and Christiansted and indulge in St. Croix’s renowned art and delicious culinary scenes.
St. John is one of the smaller U.S. Virgin Islands and conservation center of the territory. It is best known for its pristine beaches and the attractions within the Virgin Islands National Park, which occupies more than half the island. The lands in the Virgin Islands National Park shelter migrant birds and the mangroves support corals and anemones. As with all the Virgin islands, you will find that St. John provides a rich mix of our culture and history.
St. Thomas is our business and shopping center and the seat of government. Charlotte Amalie is the capital town of the U.S. Virgin Islands and is one of the busiest ports of call for cruise ships in the Caribbean. St. Thomas is among the most popular destinations in the Caribbean for sailing and yachting enthusiasts.
Water Island is the smallest of the U.S. Virgin Islands and rests just off the coast of St. Thomas. It is mostly residential but offers fun attractions like Honeymoon Beach and quaint accommodations. The island can be reached by ferry from the Crown Bay Marina or by other vessels. As the Lieutenant Governor and Governor, both Treganza Roach and I wish you a warm, fun-filled stay and please accept our invitation to return often to our paradise.

St. Croix has a deep cultural tradition with horses. Chantal Corminboeuf is the Equine Program Supervisor/ Instructor at the John A. Bell Correctional Facility.
Q: Tell us about the Equine Program.
A: This therapeutic, vocational initiative allows incarcerated people to learn life-changing skills with horses. In structured sessions, participants develop emotional awareness, intuition and self-discipline, while building a professional future, with a “Groom Elite” certification recognized by the U.S. horse racing industry. It’s a pathway toward employment in equine facilities nationwide – a second chance, built on respect.
Q: Why horses?
A: They physically out-power us, and don’t respond to labels or social strata. Horses respond to energy, presence, honesty like a mirror. In a place where masks are often worn for survival, the horse sees right through. That reflection can trigger powerful inner change for the participants. The horses
in the program are often rescues deemed “problematic.” Like the inmates, they need someone to believe in them. It creates a dynamic of mutual healing — together, they rise.
Q: What do inmates learn through this work?
A: Patience, responsibility, trust; and the consequences of energy and actions. For many, it’s the first time they’ve felt seen without judgment. I’ve seen violent men cry with a horse’s head on their shoulder; and women emotionally shut down, open their posture and speak more gently. Participants start to walk and breathe differently, make new choices, and think about the future. They also learn stable management, grooming, horse behavior, and communication: transferable life skills. Some go on to become mentors inside the program, creating a chain of positive leadership and emotional healing.
Q: What’s the emotional impact on you?
A: Profound. I walk through the gates carrying purpose and leave with gratitude and sometimes heartbreak. It has made
me humbler, stronger, more devoted to prevention over punishment. Change is possible when we offer dignity, structure, and a second chance — not through force, but connection.

November’s cover artist is featured in a CMCArts retrospective exhibition, opening November 22nd 2025 through January 3rd, 2026. She’s also quietly giving her time to Whim Museum and the VI Cancer Support project by hosting workshops this fall!
Yemaya has had a long career as an artist, and visiting her studio and boutique in Frederiksted is just a dip into her accomplishments. Her workshop in the back is packed with brightly colored dyes in jars, wooden carved icons, masks and Adinkra symbols for printing, reference books and tools. She demonstrated the creation of a silk scarf using the itajime method at her studio, and we are sharing it with you!
1. Wet the fabric you wish to dye
2. Choose a matching pair of meaningful symbols like the Sankofa bird
3. Place the two wooden plates on either side of the fabric
4. Begin to tightly clamp the plates together, squeezing the fabric to exclude the dye
5. Apply hot dyes to the exposed areas of wetted fabric in various directions and blends
6. Make sure you get all the spots!
7. Remove the clamps, and open up your piece
8. Hang to dry! 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
The level of artistry and creativity on St. Croix knows no bounds. Known as the Twin City island, we are off the beaten path of the rest of the island chain; and so have developed an artisanal, handcrafted way of thinking about our goods, our food, our choices and our culture. Wander quaint covered porticos and lively streets – on one of St. Croix’s guided tours or on your own – enjoy the waves lapping at the waterfront as you sip a drink or a meal between browsing. In Christiansted to the east, through mid-island’s historic buildings and all the way to Frederiksted in the west, pop into art galleries, clothing and jewelry stores, gift shops and sports stores. You’ll enjoy a day discovering the stories of our island entrepreneurs and multigenerational family businesses, and finding a special treasure or two. Don’t forget to practice your “Good morning”, “Good afternoon” or “Good night!”

am an interdisciplinary artist based in St. Croix, USVI, transforming found materials and fibers through weaving, knotting, and beading. Rooted in sustainability and community, my work explores memory, trauma, and healing. Exhibited internationally and held in major collections, I create “social fabric” that connects personal narratives with collective histories.
I enjoy how my medium (fiber and found materials) carries memory. Each seed pod, fiber, and fragment of debris holds whispers of place and time. Through weaving, knotting, and beading, I transform these materials into vessels of resilience, honoring land, sea, and community while inviting healing, remembrance, and mutual renewal.
Artist Statement
My studio is a living laboratory where land, sea, and memory converge. Using foraged fibers, marine debris, and found materials, I weave site-specific works rooted in African diasporic knowledge, sustainability, and healing, reclaiming buried stories, honoring sacred spaces, and inviting remembrance and resilience.
y journey as a textile and fiber artist began in Philadelphia, where my mother, Edith Rice, first inspired my love for art. It was during the 1960s Civil Rights movement that I discovered the transformative power of dyed and embellished cloth. The tradition continues with Indigo Berg (my daughter #3 of 5) learning the art. This personal connection to my art has led to my work being exhibited at prestigious institutions such as the Smithsonian Institution, the Studio Museum of Harlem, and the Rosa Parks Museum, and worn by cultural icons like Toni Morrison, Angela Davis, Tyra Banks and Erykah Badu. My work is distinguished by
my specialization in batik and Japanese itajime techniques, and my use of natural fibers – silk, cotton, wool, and rayon – to create vibrant, one-of-a-kind designs. These designs are deeply rooted in Caribbean color and African symbolism, often incorporating motifs like the Sankofa (a Ghanaian Adinkra symbol of a bird looking backwards to ‘look back and know your history’). These symbols honor heritage while shaping new stories. Today, I continue to create and teach from my studio in Frederiksted, St. Croix. I invite visitors to experience my scarves, garments, and wall hangings that not only showcase vibrant designs but also celebrate the enduring beauty, rich history, and unwavering strength of the cultures that inspire my work.

The Grove Place Baobab: cover story OUR HERITAGE TREES are places to
This massive tree is a living monument that has witnessed nearly three centuries of Virgin Islands history.
Planted around 1750, this majestic baobab has stood through slavery in the Danish West Indies, the 1848 Emancipation day rebellion, the 1878 Fireburn Revolt, the transfer of the islands to the US in 1917, and even the devastating winds of Hurricane Hugo in 1989. Beneath its branches, self emancipated men, women and children once rejoiced at the freedom they took by force. And it was under this very tree that the Caribbean’s first labor movement took root in 1913, led by D Hamilton Jackson. This beloved jumbie tree is now listed on the National Register of Historic Trees, and widely known as the oldest Baobab in the territory, carrying stories of resistance, freedom, celebration, and survival.

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30 with the peak occurring between mid-August and late October.
Hurricanes are Massive Storm Systems that form over the water and move toward land. Threats from hurricanes include high winds, heavy rainfall, storm surge, coastal and inland flooding, rip currents, and tornadoes. Here a few basic things to think about.
Register for Emergency Alerts and Notifications of potential safety hazards.
Know the difference between the NWS “Watches” and “Warnings.” A watch lets you know that weather conditions are favorable for a hazard to occur. It means “be on guard!” A warning requires immediate action. This means a weather hazard is imminent.
Download a printable VI Hurricane Tracking Map on the VITEMA website below. Remember that St. Croix is at 17/64.
Know the local hurricane evacuation route(s) and plan where you can stay or supply your house for several days.
Put together a Disaster Supply Kit, take pictures of important docs and belongings.
Make a plan to keep your beloved pets safe and talk with family and friends about your plan if a hurricane strikes.
Trim or remove damaged trees or limbs in your yard. Secure loose rain gutters and downspouts. Secure and reinforce your roof, windows, and doors if necessary.
Purchase a portable or install a generator for use outdoors during power outages.

Whether renting a car or crossing the street, it is vital to remember that traffic flows from the left side of the road!
St. Croix has two towns, Christiansted at the center on the Northshore and Frederiksted at the West End, connected by the Melvin H. Evans highway. The Caribbean Sea, surrounding the island, is always there guiding you along roads that wind the coast.
Car rental agencies offer Jeeps, SUVs, vans, sedans, and trucks. They come with a full tank of gas and should be returned full! The driver and front seat passenger are required by law to use seat belts.
There are two parking lots in Christiansted, both with fees. One is the NPS lot next to the Fort, open from 8am-5pm, M-F. The other, on the corner of Strand and King Cross Streets, has extended hours. Check our Maps for more details, Pages 54-58.
No Take Zone – Protects near shore environments including mangroves, sea grass beds, lagoonal patch reefs, and linear reefs.
OPERATING A PERSONAL WATERCRAFT IS PROHIBITED.
ALL FISHING AND EXTRACTION IS PROHIBITED.
Recreational Zone – Allows snorkeling, diving, boating, and recreational shoreline fishing. Catch-and-release guide fishing, and cast-net bait fishing are allowed with a Marine Park Permit. ALL OTHER TRADITIONAL FISHING IS PROHIBITED (including but not limited to: fish traps; spear fishing; collection of lobster, conch, and whelk).
Wildlife Preserve Zone – Protects nesting female sea turtles using beaches in East End, Issac, Jack and Boiler Bays to lay eggs.
Let’s start a leisurely walking tour of Christiansted at the site of the Old Scale House on the harborfront, known as the Wharf. This is one of a complex of five buildings comprising the Christiansted National Historic Site, established in 1952, administered by the National Park Service. The Welcome Center and Park Store is newly reopened here from 10am to 4pm, 7 days a week (closed from Noon-1pm for lunch). Site brochures are available along with books, maps and souvenirs.
Nearby, The Old Customs House with its sweeping staircase, on the grassy area next to the Fort, was completed in 1830. It now holds National Park Service offices.
Fort Christiansvaern was the first public building to be started by the Danes after the island was purchased from France in 1733. It is built of Danish yellow brick and was completed in 1749 and later expanded. Its present appearance reflects the 1830’s period. It is open Monday through Friday from 8:30am – 4:30pm. The adjacent Fort Parking Lot is open from 8am – 5pm and hours are strictly enforced. Coming soon is a daily $10.00 parking lot usage fee collected by an automated cashless machine at the entrance, accepting only debit and credit cards.
The Steeple Building across Hospital Street, formerly the Lutheran Church, dates from 1753. This site, on the Walking Tour, is currently closed for renovation.
Across Company Street lies the onetime Danish West India & Guinea Company Warehouse, built in 1749 as a storage facility for hundreds of barrels of sugar and rum. In its courtyard, slave auctions were formerly held.
Originally, Government House on King Street, was built as a home for a Danish merchant. That section dates from 1749; another section, the previous town house of a wealthy Danish plantation owner, was joined to it in 1826, together becoming the seat of the Danish West Indies government. The grand staircase and portico were added in 1830, as was the impressive ballroom/reception hall on the second floor by Governor General Peter von Scholten, who had his office and official residence here. Due to COVID-19 restrictions tours of the site have temporarily been suspended.
The Lord God of Sabaoth Lutheran Church across Queen Cross Street on King Street was originally the Dutch Reformed Church, built in the 1740’s and transferred to the Lutherans in 1831, who brought the furnishings here from the Steeple Building. Later, the steeple was added.
Across on King Street is the historic Lutheran Parish Hall, and in the courtyard the former Pastor’s residence.
Walking up Queen Cross Street to Company Street takes you to Apothecary Hall on the left corner. Opened in 1828 by Danish pharmacist Peder Eggers Bentzon, the town’s first pharmacy remained here until 1970.
Nearby on Company Street is the Old Market , laid out in the original town plan from 1735 and still being used. The well dates from 1863. On this square you will also find the downtown Post Office.
Established in 1952, Christiansted National Historic Site was the first unit of the National Park System in the US Virgin Islands. The park’s historic buidings and grounds commemorate the Danish heritage (1733-1917) of the town of Christiansted, St. Croix, which was named in honor of the reigning King of Denmark and Norway, Christian VI. In the 1700s, Christiansted was part of a mercantile system that linked Europe,West Africa, and the Caribbean in the infamous “Triangular Trade.”
Christiansted was the first town in the Lesser Antilles to be built on the grid system and to have a building code. Its distinctive colonial architecture reflects the town’s status as capital of the Danish West Indies (1755-1871); the great wealth generated by the export of cane sugar, molasses, and rum; and the influence of government building inspectors.
Your tour of Frederiksted begins at Fort Frederik by the cruise ship pier and waterfront park. Construction on the Fort began in 1752 and was completed in 1760. Featuring a museum with several permanent exhibits, and an art gallery, it is open Monday – Friday, 8:30 am to 4 pm. Admission $5., children under 12 free.
A public beach with showers and bathrooms is next to Fort Frederik.
Governor General Peter von Scholten proclaimed the emancipation of the enslaved population in the Danish West Indies on July 3, 1848, from adjacent Buddhoe Park named for the renowned slave rebellion leader, a bust of whom is displayed there.
The Oscar E. Henry Customs House was built in the 1800s. The Freedom Fountain , facing the pier, was installed for the Emancipation’s 150th Anniversary Celebration.
After severe damage during a labor insurrection in 1878, parts of the town were rebuilt in Victorian style. Victoria House , on Strand Street, preserves the Frederiksted architecture of that time.
The Visitor’s Bureau is located upstairs on Strand Street above the Frederiksted Mall and next door to the historic light blue building housing the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts Free admission to exhibits and gift shop.
Frederiksted is home to several historic churches, including St. Paul’s Episcopal Church , Holy Tr inity Lutheran Church , Friedensberg Moravian Church , and St. Patrick Roman Catholic Church .
The handsomely restored Arthur Abel Complex , formerly The Danish School (1799), is now the office of the Lieutenant Governor in Frederiksted at Hospital and Market Street. At Strand and Queen Cross Streets is the Athalie McFarlane Petersen Public Library , built in 1803. Just behind it lies the Dorsch Theater , an open-air stage and event site. The Market Place , is still in use today, as it was in 1751 at the founding of Frederiksted.
Tour an early Danish homestead, the Lawaetz Family Museum at Estate Little La Grange on Mahogany Road. Plantation ruins offer visitors a tranquil backdrop for peace and contemplation at the Mt. Washington Labyrinth , 2 miles north of Frederiksted. Open every day, year-round. The entrance gate is to the left when you reach the property and parking lot. The Whim Museum , on Centerline Road, is the site of a former sugar cane plantation and temporarily closed. St. George Village Botanical Garden also on Centerline, showcases on 16 acres of ruins of a former sugar plantation 1500 native & exotic species. Award-winning Ridge2Reef Farm , on Creque Dam Road, is a USDA Certified Organic Farm with produce, tours, and workshops. The Sandy Point National Wildlife Refuge is .5 mile beyond the west end of the Melvin H. Evans highway. See St. Croix Map, Pg 54 for location.

Dr. Julia Sheen is a generational Crucian mom and grandmother who has worked in a number of leadership roles within the VI government, including as the Commissioner of Health. Dr. Sheen has confronted the disproportionate epidemic of diabetes in the USVI with her non-profit, the VI Diabetes Center Of Excellence (VIDCOE). “People don’t have to face diabetes alone. It can feel overwhelming, but we’re here to help make it easier for patients to connect with caring, comprehensive care.”
Diabetes case numbers are higher here than the mainland US, and the disease can affect young children. VIDCOE provides whole-person care and is expanding to all three US Virgin Islands. A new modern clinic with a sophisticated spa-like feel was just completely renovated on St. Croix in the Sion Farm Shopping Center.
“The VIDCOE clinics feature all services in one location… serving all income lev-
els… We can do comprehensive intake exams and screenings at reasonable rates,” explains medical assistant Sash Ogarro. VIDCOE also has mobile outreach capability and remote patient monitoring services. Clients can take classes on meds and diet management, and a care coordinator can help with planning lifestyle adjustments, early intervention, and comprehensive care
with the specialists on site. VIDCOE serves adults and pediatric cases. They have an endocrinologist, opthamology equipment and care, and podiatry in addition to the general medical staff in the clinic.

n October of 1878, a New York newspaper reported the Fireburn uprising with a scary headline: “Negro Insurrection at St. Croix.” But the writer wasn’t blaming the workers. He was warning the world that the system had failed. “The condition of the laboring class,” he wrote, “is very little improved since emancipation. The Danish government has not wisely managed its colonial labor policy... Its delay in reform, in listening to the just complaints of the people, has brought about this catastrophe.”
After slavery ended in the Danish West Indies in 1848, many thought freedom had truly come. But the Danish colonial government immediately passed new labor laws that made sure most formerly enslaved people stayed stuck on plantations, required to: sign year-long contracts (on Contract Day, October 1) with one employer, living on the plantation where they worked; or be punished or jailed if they tried to leave early. Even though they weren’t called slaves anymore, they couldn’t move freely or choose better work. And they were often paid just enough to survive, if that.
By October 1878, after 30 years of this unfair system, hundreds of workers – many of them women, rose up in protest. They set fire to more than 50 plantations. They marched. They shouted. They demanded better. This historic event helps us think about now. What does freedom really mean if the rules still feel unfair? Who gets to speak up and who gets ignored? How do we recognize injustice before things boil over?
I’m sharing this not to bring fire, but to bring focus. To show how people stood up and how some of the same problems still show up in new forms. We can learn from this moment in history and gauge the signs more clearly when current systems fail. Sometimes, the smoke is still here.
