We are thrilled to introduce our Home Building & Renovation feature this month, showcasing some of the extraordinary work happening across the Mornington Peninsula. Our region is home to stunning architecturally designed homes, with homeowners and builders continually pushing the boundaries of creativity and innovation.

Many of these remarkable properties remain unseen by the broader market, as they are crafted privately for the enjoyment of their owners. Unlike other areas of Victoria where uniform developments dominate, our local builders focus on unique boutique designs that truly stand out.

Also in this edition we highlight the incredible work of KWD founder Kate Walker, a leader in the design industry who collaborates with local businesses and trades to deliver outstanding projects. And we feature a stunning new build by Riverwolf Homes, with the builder’s wife, Amanda Connell, joining our team in a collaborative space to recommend some key areas of the Peninsula to explore.

Amanda will be offering more guidance on sustainability and how to look after our special region.

Additionally, we shine a spotlight on the Peninsula Hot Springs, which was recently featured as a breathtaking backdrop in the much-talked-about remake of not-so-popular Belle Gibson’s story on Netflix.

As always, we hope you enjoy this edition of Mornington Peninsula Magazine

exceptional designs and craftsmanship our region has to offer.

WORDS

ARE WORTH THEIR WEIGHT

AFTER FALLING IN LOVE WITH SOUTH AFRICA AS A TEENAGER AND SPENDING DECADES READING ABOUT THE COUNTRY, MORNINGTON PENINSULA AUTHOR IRMA GOLD HAS FINALLY BROUGHT HER PASSION TO THE PAGE IN HER SECOND NOVEL, SHIFT.

Released last month and set against the backdrop of Kliptown township in South Africa, the novel follows Arlie, a photographer seeking to understand his mother’s secretive South African past while navigating his own artistic and personal struggles.

“My dad is English/French but he was born in Johannesburg the year apartheid began and grew up there,” Irma said. “I was always fascinated by the country, and when I was 14 I read Biko, by journalist Donald Woods, about freedom fighter Steve Biko. I became obsessed with reading about the freedom fighters and was desperate to get to Soweto, but it wasn’t until I was in my 40s that I finally did. Put simply, I fell in love with the place and its people.”

Irma’s connection to South Africa is evident in her vivid portrayal of Shift’s characters: Rufaro the choir director; Mama K, who’s known for her kotas (stuffed South African sandwiches); Glory the singer; and Samson, an aspiring soccer player. “They are not based on any specific individuals but they arose out of the various trips to Soweto and Kliptown. They feel like living, breathing people to me. I miss hanging out with them.”

The novel’s release date is particularly pertinent given that this year is the 70th anniversary of the Freedom Charter. “The Freedom Charter set out the principles for democracy, and many of them are still a long way from being achieved,” Irma said. “Kliptown, the place where it was signed, ironically provides the starkest evidence of that. It has no electricity, no sewerage system and no school. People live in

tiny shacks and there is over 70 per cent unemployment.”

Irma’s previous novel, The Breaking, dealt with elephant tourism in Thailand. While the settings and storylines of her novels are considerably different, they do share a singular purpose. “The only connecting theme between them is that they both engender conversations around particular injustices in the world.”

As a novelist, children’s author, editor and podcaster, Irma spends her days immersed in words. “My life is all about words. I’m incredibly fortunate to spend every day doing what I love. My childhood self would be both gobsmacked and jubilant that I get to spend my days reading, editing and writing books.”

Irma hopes readers will be swept up in Arlie’s story and fall in love with the characters who become pivotal in his life. “I know of no other Australian novel set in contemporary Soweto, and so I hope it gives readers an awareness of what life is like there and the challenges its inhabitants face every day.”

After taking readers from the elephant sanctuaries of Thailand to the vibrant townships of South Africa in her first two books, Irma’s literary expeditions are coming full circle as she reveals that in her third she’ll be bringing her storytelling talents home to capture the Mornington Peninsula. For locals, the anticipation of seeing their own landscape rendered with the same evocative, cinematic prose that reviewers praise in Shift is just another reason to discover this rising Australian talent who now calls Frankston home.

SmackTalk speaks volumes

TO HONOUR MAC’S MEMORY

IN THE WAKE OF LOSING HIS 17-YEAR-OLD SON, MAC, TO SUICIDE IN 2023, WAYNE HOLDSWORTH HAS TRANSFORMED HIS GRIEF INTO A POTENT FORCE FOR POSITIVE CHANGE BY ESTABLISHING SMACKTALK AND EARNING THE FRANKSTON CITY COUNCIL’S 2025 CITIZEN OF THE YEAR AWARD.

SmackTalk was formed to address the glaring gap in the community’s knowledge in identifying signs that friends, family and fellow tribe members show when they are mentally struggling and then what to do to save them,” Wayne said.

The tragedy has made Wayne passionate about protecting young people, particularly online. “One of the reasons Mac took his life was because he was sexually extorted. We must protect our children from the social media predators. Legislation is a start but education is the key.”

The organisation’s name carries special significance. “A mate of mine, Jarryd Moss, thought of it,” Wayne said. “Mac gave and received a fair share of banter on the basketball court and footy field, and his name is included (in SmackTalk).”

Leveraging his professional experience as CEO of Frankston and District

Basketball Association, Wayne uses his skills to amplify SmackTalk’s message. “My network has expanded enormously to include premiers and key decision-makers,” he said. These connections have proved invaluable in spreading awareness about mental health.

When asked about finding motivation during difficult times, Wayne’s answer is profoundly moving: “It is so very hard, but we have reconciled Mac’s death by way of knowing my work has and will continue to save other lives. It’s Mac’s legacy.”

Wayne’s advocacy extends to social media age restrictions, and he’s been involved in the News Corp Let Them Be Kids campaign. Beyond presentations, SmackTalk launched Unplug 24 last year, encouraging everyone to disconnect from social media for 24 hours on October 24, the anniversary of Mac’s death. “After last year, where we had 130,000 register, we will have

a million Australians this year and one million overseas register,” Wayne said.

For parents attending SmackTalk sessions, Wayne encourages them to “ask their children open-ended questions, not just ‘Are you OK?’. Parents set the example and stop relying so much on their phone”.

In every presentation, Wayne emphasises one crucial message: “Listen to understand; don’t listen to resolve or respond. Nothing is more important than listening to someone who is struggling.”

Balancing this emotionally demanding work with family life presents challenges, but Wayne’s priorities are clear. “My wife and 16-year-old daughter Daisy are so very supportive. Family wasn’t always my priority, sadly, and it may have cost me my son, but it is now. If I had known then what I know now, Mac would still be alive.” It’s

this raw vulnerability combined with determined action that makes Wayne’s work so impactful. With his new platform as Citizen of the Year, Wayne aims to spread SmackTalk’s reach even further, offering free sessions to clubs, workplaces and schools because he knows from experience that such conversations can literally save lives.

LIFE

MORNINGTON PENINSULA DESIGNER KATE WALKER – THE FOUNDER AND DIRECTOR OF KWD – IS COMMITTED TO DESIGN EXCELLENCE.

Embracing the coastal lifestyle of Mount Martha where she has lived for more than a decade, Kate has in turn been embraced by the wider regional community, forging meaningful ties with clients and businesses.

As guest editor on a collector’s edition of Home Beautiful last year, Kate included pages showcasing the work of Peninsula creatives between articles featuring her own interior designs. Further demonstrating her regard for local talent, she frequently collaborates with regional artisans and tradespeople. Her support is repaid by their loyalty, and repeat collaborations often occur. The respect goes both ways, with the opportunity to work on a KWD project being a mark of success.

Now a confident businesswoman capable of making visions a reality, at one point Kate was uncertain how her future would look.

Of her childhood in Geelong, she said: “My mother was an interior designer and my father was an entrepreneur, so I inherited a strong work ethic and appreciation for aesthetic.”

It would be easy to assume her upbringing would draw her towards a career in design, but as a teen she excelled in music, science and mathematics. After leaving school, she studied commerce science at Melbourne University and speech pathology at La Trobe University, but later realised her subjects weren’t the right fit.

“It was during my 15-year career at National Tiles that I truly understood my passion for design, and developed a unique blend of entrepreneurial skills, business operations, product management, client relationships, problem-solving, and a design sensibility that shaped a successful career in interior design,” she said. “It became clear that I needed to nurture my creativity and

independence. Personal experiences and challenges highlighted the importance of creative expression and autonomy in my professional life.”

Kate and her then husband decided to move to Mount Martha, where her parents owned a holiday home, to provide a peaceful upbringing for her two children. Several years later as a single mother, Kate founded KWD out of necessity. Now, 11 years on, her team of nearly 20 professionals execute a wide range of design projects on the Peninsula, across Victoria and around Australia.

Kate’s personal values are reflected in her business. “KWD is built on the ethos of putting clients first, embracing innovation, and encouraging a sense of community. We are focused on enhancing our clients’ lives through the science behind the ‘art of joyful living’, creating environments that promote happiness and wellbeing.”

Projects are primarily residential, and there are plans to embark on some truly transformative undertakings this year. One of the most significant is the restoration of Mornington heritage property Combe Martin, which has required meticulous attention to detail and collaboration with Heritage Victoria.

The team has also worked on several commercial spaces. “One particularly exciting venture is Larnook, an off-grid tiny house concept that embodies sustainable, minimalist living. We are also very proud of our first commercial accommodation project for Alba Thermal Springs & Spa, which is opening in June and is designed to offer an immersive and tranquil retreat experience.”

KWD is committed to offering a range of design services tailored to various budgets. To see more of Kate’s work or to arrange a consultation, visit www.katewalkerdesign. com.au or www.kwdandco.com.au, and follow katewalker_design on Instagram.

JESSIE’S UNEXPECTED

ANZAC connection

AN INVITATION TO PERFORM AT LAST YEAR’S ANZAC DAY SERVICE AT GALLIPOLI PROMPTED A SAXOPHONIST FROM MELBOURNE’S ROYAL AUSTRALIAN NAVY BAND TO RESEARCH HER FAMILY’S MILITARY HISTORY BEFORE THE TRIP.

In a surprising revelation, Able Seaman Musician Jessie Bartlett learnt she had three relatives who fought on the shores of the Turkish peninsula during World War I.

Jessie anticipated that being present at the site of the battle of Gallipoli would elicit an emotional response. After the discovery of her own familial link to the Anzacs, however, the experience affected her more than she’d first imagined.

“Three of my relatives fought at Gallipoli and only one survived,” said Jessie, who trains at HMAS Cerberus.

Two of the boys were her great-greatgrandmother’s nephews. Joseph (Joe) Horrocks enlisted at 21 and served in the 11th Battalion, one of the first to land on the Gallipoli Peninsula. It was Joe’s regiment – soldiers from Western Australia – who posed on the steps of Cheops Pyramid in a famous

Sadly, Joe never made it home. After a shelling in the trenches resulted in the amputation of his left leg, he died of his wounds on board HMHS Soudan His body was buried at sea in the Dardanelles.

“In a tragic twist, Joe’s younger brother, Edwin – who had enlisted at just 19 years old and travelled to Gallipoli with the 28th Battalion – was likely sent to war before hearing the news that his brother had already died,” Jessie said. “According to his mother’s notes on his roll of honour, Edwin was known to be a ‘good shot’ and volunteered as a sniper, but was shot through the spine just eight days after landing on the peninsula.” He was buried at sea from the RN hospital ship HMHS Somali

Joseph and Edwin Horrocks’ names are on the Lone Pine Memorial at Gallipoli. “It was interesting learning about their stories but it felt very surreal to actually be there and see their names carved into the stone and think about what they went through.”

Only one of her Anzac relatives survived. Harold Frank Bolding, her great-great-great uncle, was wounded fighting at Gallipoli with the 4th Light Horse Regiment, but recovered and went on to commission with the Royal Army Service Corps.

photograph taken in January 1915. Four months later, Joe would be dead.

“Reading the letters Joe wrote to his family was a chilling experience,” Jessie said. “He writes about landing at Gallipoli, saying ‘It put a funny feeling in a man being fired at in an open boat’, and ‘The first three days fighting were the hardest we had’. I can’t even start to imagine the fear and exhaustion they would have felt.”

“It’s hard to grasp how little these boys might have known about what they would be facing before being sent to war. They didn’t have access to TikTok or social media to hear stories from people who had fought before them to understand what they would experience. Many were teenagers thinking they were off on an exciting adventure, but many never came home. Can you imagine leaving family and friends before turning 19 to spend nearly a month at sea sailing to fight in a war in an unknown land?”

Ben Smith Putting people before politics.

Gday, I’m Ben.

As the CEO of the Mornington Community Support Centre, I’ve spent years working on the issues that matter most to the Mornington Peninsula — cost of living, healthcare, and support for local families.

I’ve also seen how the major parties fail to meet the needs of our community.

That’s why I’m running as your community Independent.

CALM FARM your

RURAL PROPERTIES ABOUND ON THE PENINSULA, MANY PASSED DOWN IN FAMILIES FOR GENERATIONS. CHRISTINE GORMAN IS A THIRDGENERATION HOBBY FARMER WITH A PASSION FOR HELPING OTHERS INVEST IN THE LONG GAME.

Actively managing the 20ha Hastings farm purchased by her grandfather, Christine bears witness to the changes that have taken place in farming between her grandparents’ era and today. While there have been advancements in tools and techniques, one thing that hasn’t changed is the value of handson mentoring and practical instruction. An advocate for learning – with diplomas in secondary teaching and agriculture – Christine runs a consultation service called The Calmer Farmer, where she educates other hobby farmers about “every aspect of the farm from the soil up”.

Mentorship was spontaneously modelled by Christine’s family during her upbringing. “Even as a child visiting my grandparents every weekend, we were involved in everything that was

happening, from haymaking to animal care to construction. It has been such a privilege to grow up here, learning from both my grandfather’s and father’s experiences of farming and being able to teach my own children in turn.

“Our farm was very different when my grandfather first bought it. It was over twice the size and was the site of an old dairy. Much of what we have and use today has been developed from that first vision that my grandfather had, although the function of some things has definitely changed. Today our farm supports dairy goats, beef cattle, sheep, a few chickens for eggs, and a variety of fruit and vegetables via a small orchard and gardens.“

Sometimes it can be hard to do, but thinking ahead to where you want your

farm to be long-term is beneficial in the development stages to ensure you are getting everything right at the onset.” Christine is candid in her advisory role, gladly sharing anecdotes with new hobby farmers to help them learn from her experiences. “When we brought our first dairy goat home, we were unaware she needed company and spent considerable time patching fences to try to keep her contained. All she needed was a friend and suddenly her desire to escape disappeared. For us, finding that mentor to guide us in our new goat journey made such a difference to our success.”

The idea for The Calmer Farmer occurred to Christine when a kindergarten mum asked her to look after their small farm while they were away. During that time their pet cow unexpectedly calved, and when they

returned from holiday they were completely unprepared for caring for the newborn or its mother. “I showed them where to buy necessities and taught them how to care for the calf. I realised there were new hobby farmers out there with little to no experience and, aside from enrolling in agricultural courses, very few options to learn the skills required to make their farms successful.”

Hobby farmers contribute significantly to the economy across the Peninsula: from livestock to orchards, vineyards to market gardens, dairies to haymaking, even honey and indigenous nurseries. Christine’s consultation service is a great investment for the community.

MARTHA COVE VILLAGE

HOT NEW DRAMA Peninsula venue stars in

Alycia Debnam-Carey plays Milla in the new Netflix series Apple Cider Vinegar, some of which was filmed at Peninsula Hot Springs.

WITH A SLEW OF INTERNATIONAL AWARDS, PENINSULA HOT SPRINGS IS WELL-KNOWN AS A GLOBAL LEADER IN THE LUXURY SPA INDUSTRY.

Now it’s reaching an even wider audience as a spectacular backdrop for a new TV drama series about one of Australia’s most high-profile con artists.

Produced by See-Saw Films/Picking Scabs Production, Netflix’s Apple Cider Vinegar is based on the story of Belle Gibson, the ‘wellness influencer’ who claimed she had cured herself of brain cancer through natural remedies and was donating hundreds of thousands of dollars from the sales of her app and book to charity. Then came her stunning public admission: it was all a lie.

Apple Cider Vinegar was inspired by The Woman Who Fooled The World, the book by journalists Beau Donelly and Nick Toscano who began reporting on Gibson’s claims in 2015, and was filmed in Melbourne and surrounds, with the production team approaching Peninsula Hot Springs while

scouting for locations. After discussions between the two parties over shots, timing and locations, a single day of filming was locked in.

The normally peaceful and serene venue was buzzing with excitement and action on February 12 last year. For the special day, the Spa Dreaming Centre and the Food Bowl were closed off to the public – perfectly timed after the summer school holidays. They welcomed about 100 people who consisted of the production team, with vans and trailers including talent, extras, catering team, costume, make-up, production and more descending on the Peninsula to create some magic.

With Peninsula Hot Springs staff offered the chance to be extras in the series, the atmosphere was euphoric for the workday with a twist. After filming, they shared their excitement over their experience on a film set and their chance to speak to a few

friendly actors. After a huge, long day for all, the wait began for the hot springs team to see the result.

Almost a year after the day’s filming, Apple Cider Vinegar debuted on February 6, with Kaitlyn Dever (Unbelievable and Justified) as Gibson and Alycia Debnam-Carey (The 100 and Fear the Walking Dead) as Milla, alongside Aisha Dee (The Bold Type and Safe Home) and Tilda Cobham-Hervey (The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart and 52 Tuesdays). It spent three consecutive weeks in the Netflix Global Top 10 list and amassed more than 12.2 million views.

For those who recognised the Peninsula location in the trailer or followed the story of Gibson as her lies unravelled live across media outlets, this has been a must-see series that has gained momentum since its debut.

Somerville’s business park set to boom

THE BUZZ IS BUILDING AROUND THE PROPOSED MORNINGTON PENINSULA TECHNOLOGY, INDUSTRY & BUSINESS PARK IN BUNGOWER RD, SOMERVILLE, WITH MORNINGTON PENINSULA SHIRE COUNCIL UNANIMOUSLY VOTING TO REFER THE PROJECT TO A PLANNING PANEL.

It’s a huge leap forward for Peninsula resident and business owner Chris Procter’s dream to shake up employment opportunities in the region.

“Supply of industrial land is now critical on the Mornington Peninsula, particularly for larger lot sizes to suit larger businesses; these are practically non-existent,” Chris said. “As we evidenced on our revised supply and demand assessment, there may now be as little as 1.9-2.4 years of remaining developable land on the Peninsula.”

The business park is set to become an economic engine for the region, with the addition of 1100 new jobs expected at capacity. Unlike traditional industrial estates, this development promises a thoughtfully designed environment with sustainable, low-rise buildings nestled among extensive landscaping.

The precinct will feature generous green spaces, walking and cycling paths, and modern amenities that prioritise functionality and aesthetics, creating a business park that complements the Peninsula’s natural character rather than detracting from it. “We have had preliminary discussions with some

high-value tenants and a number wrote letters of support through the public exhibition process,” Chris said. “During the exhibition process, the need for AgTech Industries was presented by some respondents, so this is an area we’d like to pursue given the proximity to agriculture and the need by local farmers to incorporate modern technologies in their methods. As one farmer put it: ‘The AgTech sector is looking for a home’.”

After years of planning, the project’s timeline is finally crystallising, with the planning panel hearing kicking off on May 12 and recommendations expected to land with the shire by the end of July. “I would hope we can break ground during 2027,” Chris said.

Community feedback has already helped sculpt the project, especially regarding site access. “We have taken on board feedback from the community that was expressed during the exhibition process and incorporated this into the proposed overlay that will guide the future use and development of the park, particularly around the development of public transport infrastructure and a shared pedestrian/ cycling path to connect the precinct to the township and make it more accessible to other forms of transportation.”

The team has also addressed community traffic concerns. “We undertook a significant preliminary transport and movement plan, which was peer-reviewed by council-selected engineers. This evidenced the local road network can accommodate additional traffic without exceeding capacity, and the safety and efficiency would not be compromised. This also resulted in us committing to a full signalised intersection at the precinct entrance to provide safe and efficient access.”

The heritage-listed Brunnings Homestead won’t be forgotten, with plans continuing to evolve through the development application process. The historical property will remain a centrepiece within the precinct’s 5.5ha of green open space.

With nearly half of Peninsula residents currently travelling away from the area for work, the development could be a game-changer for professionals seeking opportunities closer to home, while creating a community hub that balances economic growth with environmental care. For more information about the development, visit www.mornpen.tech

WOMEN

reshaping trades on the Peninsula

Women are joining the trades in record numbers, with apprenticeships up nearly 80 per cent over the past five years.*

With construction one of the biggest industries on the Mornington Peninsula, there's never been a better time for women to get on the tools. That's exactly what Peninsula local and plumbing apprentice Shardai Hewett is doing, and she encourages other women to do the same.

"Do what your heart says," Shardai said. "People say, 'You can't lift this' or 'You can't do that – you're a girl’, but I've always done it anyway. And now no one says anything because they know I'm going to prove them wrong."

Shardai always knew she wanted to work in a trade. With a love of hands-on work and a father who owned a plumbing business, she jumped at the chance to start an apprenticeship. Now in her second year at Chisholm, she's making huge strides in her career.

But the journey hasn't been easy. In early 2024 her father had a stroke, and Shardai, her sister and their mother had to step up and help keep the

business running. Just two months after her father returned home, she faced another blow: an ovarian cancer diagnosis. "I was off the tools for about four months. I was lucky the surgery was all I had to do."

Through it all she found support from her family, workmates and teachers at Chisholm. "The teachers and boys at TAFE, all the boys at work, they're just like family to me,” Shardai said.

Students like Shardai – driven, resilient, and determined – are proving that women belong in trade occupations and are reshaping the industry for the better.

Learning the skills to shape the future

At Cornish College, we care passionately about education, but we are also passionate about sustainability and making a difference today for a sustainable and thriving tomorrow.

This isn’t a world we can just hope for; we need to educate for it. We need to do things differently to ensure we are educating for the world we want for our children’s future and beyond.

“It is the most important obligation we have to this generation of young people and to our community,” says principal Nicola Forrest. “The curriculum is shaped through our model of sustainable thinking dispositions and our Rings of Sustainability.”

The four interconnected rings represent Personal Sustainability, Socio-Cultural Sustainability,

Urban-Technological Sustainability, and Natural Sustainability.

“Each ring represents a key area of sustainability, and together they provide a critical lens for viewing the world – and all our curriculum – so that our young people become problem-identifiers and problemsolvers with the capacity to create social good for a sustainable future,” Nicola says.

“Using the rings, our students, when considering an issue such as climate change, will consider it directly in relation to their personal sustainability.

“Ultimately, we want young people to view the world the way it is: as a series of interconnected parts and actions rather than siloed learning areas, which is the way a traditional curriculum is set up.”

“This generation of young people are often called upon to be the change-makers and to understand that many of today’s problems are a result of what were essentially often yesterday’s solutions, not created by these young people themselves.

“As a school whose motto is ‘Make a difference and be the difference’, we work with young people to remind them that the difference starts with taking care of their personal sustainability/wellbeing first. Only then can we work together to make a difference today for a sustainable future.”

FLAGS HIS ARRIVAL

When 13-year-old Zac Jenkins snagged a game-changing intercept touchdown at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra recently, he wasn’t just scoring points; he was making Mornington Peninsula sporting history. The Frankston High School dynamo was selected to represent Victoria in the under-15 boys’ team at the inaugural American Football Australia Youth Flag Nationals.

For those unfamiliar with the sport, flag football offers a safer alternative to traditional American football. “Instead of tackling, you have to grab a tag from a belt,” Zac said. “There are also only five players per side on the field at any one time. The field is also smaller.”

Zac’s introduction to flag football began two years ago. “I first played in Grade 6. My PE teacher, Mr Runchey, introduced the sport to our school and our Derinya Primary School team won the state final and got to play in the nationals on the Gold Coast.”

Playing on the defensive line, Zac embraces his role with enthusiasm. “I enjoy the responsibility of being the first defender the attacking team need to get past,” he said.

The national competition, held at the AIS, brought together teams from Victoria, ACT, NSW and Queensland. “We had four games scheduled two hours apart, so we would support the other Victorian teams that were there while we weren’t playing.”

Victoria performed admirably against tough competition. “We were very competitive against the ACT and NSW, winning one game and losing one game against both. Queensland were extremely strong and won every game. We made the grand final and lost to Queensland but the grand final was the closest game they had.”

The tournament provided unforgettable moments for the young athlete. “My personal highlight was getting an intercept touchdown against the ACT with six minutes to go. We thought we had to beat them by six points to make the grand final and that touchdown got the scores to level. We got another touchdown soon after to win through to the final.”

Apart from his interest in flag football, Zac maintains an active sporting life. “I play basketball, AFL and also cricket at school. Basketball is great for agility, and the fitness from AFL is very helpful.” Managing this busy schedule requires discipline. “I have sport on nearly every night, so I have to be a good student and get my work and homework done in class.”

The AIS experience was particularly special for Zac. “It was great to see the other athletes in the village. We saw the basketballers and I spoke to an Olympic boxer who was living in the same area we were staying.”

With flag football set to make its Olympic debut in 2028, Zac remains measured about his future in the sport. “I haven’t really thought about (the Olympics) too much, as I will still be quite young, but if I keep developing, who knows?”

The sport’s technical nature presents some challenges. “It is very technical and you have to know the rules so you get a good advantage.” However, the team environment remains a highlight. “We all get along very well and it is very inclusive.”

While Victoria’s flag football community continues to grow, our region might just be witnessing the birth of its newest sporting dynasty. Remember the name Zac Jenkins; this is just his opening play.

Life’s Precious Stories

I WANT TO TELL YOUR STORY. THE KNOWLEDGE, WISDOM AND LESSONS YOU HAVE ACCRUED THROUGHOUT YOUR LIFE AND THE LIVES OF YOUR LOVED ONES SHOULD BE PRESERVED.

Telling your story through a video is incredibly valuable. People from all cultures instinctively pass on their traditions, morals, values and religious beliefs in the form of storytelling to their loved ones. The video we will create together will provide a detailed account of your life for your descendants to have an audio-visual connection to you.

With more than a decade of professional cinematography and photography experience, in collaboration with trusted psychologists, we have curated an extensive and comprehensive list of questions designed to cover various aspects of an individual’s life, wisdom and legacy. Our aim is to help document rich and meaningful stories, which will be

professionally recorded using the highest quality camera and audio equipment to future-proof your legacy.

SO WHY ME?

1. I deeply care.

Having just married the love of my life, it has brought to light the importance of capturing and preserving people’s stories. One of my deepest regrets is not having recorded my grandmother’s life, who I loved dearly and was incredibly close to. She was a well-educated woman who pursued knowledge and the elevation of the human spirit. It saddens me that my children won’t truly connect with her personality, gestures, voice or her laughter. I feel the responsibility to pass on her legacy, which motivates me to do the same for others in our community.

2. My passion – a million photos and counting.

Over the past decade, I have had the privilege of capturing thousands of family and corporate events all over the world, which have included: christenings, weddings in Australia, Egypt, the Maldives, Greece, Italy, Lebanon and Switzerland. Furthermore, I have photographed fashion shows in Milan, Netflix film sets in Dubai, collaborations with established brands including Palazzo Versace, Porsche, Universal Music, Toyota and Moët Hennessy for officially licensed Formula 1 events. I’ve had the honour of working with celebrities including Arnold Schwarzenegger, Air Supply, 50 Cent, Usain Bolt, the Quincy Jones-produced artist Xriss Jor and many more talented artists from across the globe.

My photography has been used on Anthony Callea’s George Michael’s tour album cover as well as on three album covers for ARIA-winning violin virtuoso Patrick Roberts, including filming his music video Fragile featuring Sting and Tommy Emmanuel. I worked with the Very Special Kids foundation, last year raising $12,000 for children in need, and will continue to support them.

I seek to constantly expand and master my craft, honing my storytelling ability with each image captured.

Please feel free to contact me via phone or email with the word ‘Legacy’ to receive a special offer as a Mornington Peninsula Magazine subscriber/reader. It would be my pleasure to meet you and your loved ones.

Aptly named, by Gum!

As the skies get dark this month, you will notice that the constellations scattered along the arc of the Milky Way come into view. Crux – also known as the Southern Cross – and Centaurus, with the bright stars Rigil Kentaurus and Hadar – or Alpha Centauri and Beta Centauri – are on show. In the south-east, do not miss the bright star Antares in Scorpius. On the opposite side of the sky you will see Canopus in Carina. There is relatively little going on in the sky overhead, as this area is dominated by the long and winding constellation Hydra. However, you will find the bright star Spica in Virgo high in the east.

The very finest of all globular clusters is the startlingly bright Omega Centauri (NGC 5139). This 13 billion-year-old, one million star-strong globular is thought to be the nucleus of a dwarf galaxy that collided with the Milky Way. It can be found by making an equilateral triangle using The Pointers, Crux and Epsilon Centauri.

By far the most impressive sight is the great arc of the Milky Way galaxy. It stretches all the way from the magnificent region in the east around the constellations Scorpius and Sagittarius, through Crux, Carina and Vela, and down to Puppis and Canis Major. The bright star Acrux, or Alpha

Crucis, in Crux is a multiple star that can be resolved by a small telescope. The galaxy M83, also known as the Southern Pinwheel, in Hydra is an excellent large-aperture telescope object.

There are two meteor showers in April: The Lyrids, which reach their peak on the night of April 22-23, when you can expect to see an average of 10 meteors an hour in dark, clear skies; and the Puppid meteor shower, which will be producing its peak rate of meteors around April 24. No special equipment or a lot of skill are required to view a meteor shower; all you really need is a clear sky and lots of patience. For

optimum viewing, find a secluded area away from the city lights. Once you have found your viewing spot, make sure you are comfortable, especially if you plan to stay out long – meteorwatching can be a waiting game.

The Southern Tadpole Nebula – Gum 37, named after Australian astronomer Colin Gum – is associated with the star cluster NGC 3572. It is an emission nebula in the southern constellation of Carina, less than 10,000 light-years from Earth.

SHIPS SHATTER RECORDS

Records for the largest carrying capacity and greatest length have been set by the arrivals of two container ships at the Port of Melbourne’s Swanston Dock last year.

The first was set on October 23 by the 300m-long, 48.2m-wide CMA CGM Volga, which has a carrying capacity of 10,622 teu. Teu is the short form of ‘twenty-foot-equivalent unit’, which

is the way in which the maximum carrying capacity of a container ship is measured. A standard container is 20 feet long, though many are 40 feet long. While 10,622 teu is a large number, it is only when we consider how far this many containers would stretch if placed end to end that we can understand what it means. That number of teu would stretch 212,440 feet, or 64.75km. It seems impossible that any ship could carry this much, but the largest container ships in the world – none of which could enter Port Phillip – can load more than 24,000 teu.

Two days after the arrival of CMA CGM Volga, the record for the longest ship to dock at Swanston Dock was set by the Seaspan Breeze, which has a length of 337m, a width of 48.2m, and can carry 10,100 teu. Until October 25, any ships of this length had to dock at Webb Dock, to the east of the mouth

of the Yarra River. To understand what 337m means, it could be remembered that the distance from the fence line at one end of the MCG to the fence line at the other end is only 171m, which is just a little over half the length of the Seaspan Breeze. The largest container ship in the world, however, is the MSC Irina, which is 400m long, 61.3m wide and has a capacity of 24,346 teu. CMA CGM is a French company that is the third largest container shipping company in the world and owns nearly 600 container ships.

A SANCTUARY

for the senses

Seawinds Gardens at Arthurs Seat is the perfect location to reset a busy mind, with a kaleidoscope of colours enticing the eye into the natural world and away from screens. A short stroll through autumnal foliage, whether clinging to a branch or littered below, can relieve a heightened nervous system with a few simple steps.

Follow the pin oak-lined path towards the summit to admire the striking autumn colours of the sharp lobed leaves characteristic of the oak. Listen to the wind rise up, over and through the branches of the verdant landscape to the 314m summit from the sea below. Take in the spectacular, sweeping views of the Melbourne skyline across Port Phillip to the You Yangs and further south to The Heads. By engaging

this ‘panoramic vision’ we can indirectly stimulate the vagus nerve, which is crucial in regulating the nervous system and promoting relaxation.

Explore the 1.8km circuit walk through the indigenous garden, past William Ricketts’ sculptures and through dense bushland where eastern grey kangaroos lazily graze by the trail in morning fog. Listen to the chorus of bird life or glimpse the majestic wedge-tailed eagles soaring over their native habitat. Discover calm beneath tall elms, darkened bark and deep ridges denoting their age. Marvel at the fleeting interplay of light and shadow as sunlight filters through the tree canopy, evoking a sense of tranquillity and connection with nature.

Japanese term this concept ‘komorebi’ – “sunlight leaking through trees”. It’s an ideology to inspire us to slow down, pause, and recognise the small moments that colour the impermanence of all life.

Autumn at Seawinds is a visually stunning time to reconnect with nature, providing opportunities to embrace change as a natural evolution of who we are. To grasp that everything is in a state of flux encourages a more mindful, more present and less attached way of living: a salve for a busy mind.

SAND Lines in the

The Australian Sand Sculpting Championships return to the Frankston Waterfront next month after a six-year hiatus. Over seven days, the country’s top sand sculptors will vie for champion and doubles champions titles before their creations, inspired by the theme The Villains of Storytime, go on display for a three-week exhibition.

“In an epic showdown of sand and creativity, spectators can watch sculptors race to finish their sand masterpieces,” Sandstorm Events said in a statement. “These life-size sculptures will showcase iconic literary villains, highlighting the crucial role villains play in stories, as the hero’s journey cannot shine without them.”

The championships will also feature a range of activities for children, including workshops, speed carving demonstrations, and an Easter egg hunt

on Easter weekend, while the Sand Museum will showcase the history of sand sculpting in Australia.

Mayor Kris Bolam said he was proud to welcome sand sculpting back to Frankston. “A widely popular and muchloved event by the community, it’s great to see the sand sculpting return to its home on Frankston’s Waterfront,” Cr Bolam said. “The sand sculptures are an iconic feature of Frankton’s foreshore, attracting locals and visitors from interstate and overseas. This exciting event showcases the incredible talent of Australian sand sculptors as well as the creativity and imagination held within our local community.”

STYLE Effortless weekend

TIPS FROM DESIGNER KERRYN COUGHLIN

KERRYN COUGHLIN, HEAD OF DESIGN AT YARRA TRAIL, SHARES HER ADVICE ON HOW TO CREATE A WEEKEND LOOK THAT’S BOTH STYLISH AND COMFORTABLE.

1. Layering is key

As the weather changes, layering becomes essential. Our Pure Shirt in white provides a classic base layer, while our cotton cashmere Mica cardigan keeps you cosy and warm (pictured here).

2. Comfortable fabrics

Look for fabrics with stretch that you can move easily in, especially when layering. The classic Aubrey Trench is perfect for adding effortless flair without compromising on comfort.

3. Natural fibres

At Yarra Trail, we prioritise high-quality natural fibres for their longevity, ease and timeless appeal. Opt for breathable natural fibres like cotton and wool to keep you comfortable without the bulk, making them ideal for travel or that weekend getaway.

4. Flattering silhouettes

Proportions are crucial. Pair a long jacket with slim pants or try a wide-leg pant with a shorter jacket for a flattering, balanced look.

Kerryn’s must-have this season? Yarra Trail’s soft Raw Hide leather jacket that works with most pieces in the collection and can easily be dressed up or down.

FREE PARENTING SUPPORT FOR FRANKSTON FAMILIES

An Aboriginal-led early parenting centre in Frankston is providing free specialist sleep, settling and feeding services, supporting the health and wellbeing of babies and their parents and helping families navigate the challenging early years of parenthood.

The Baluk Balert Barring Early Parenting Centre on the Nepean Highway combines traditional and modern health support for parents from the early days of pregnancy until their children start school. It also provides support for men transitioning into parenthood, connections to community services like playgroups, and maternal child health services. The centre, which was visited last month

by Victorian Children Minister Lizzie Blandthorn, provides a home away from home for new parents, offering First Nations families the choice to access culturally safe early parenting support.

“The new centre is a response to a clear gap in Aboriginal-led family services that focus on early years in the region, where the First Nations population is projected to grow by 51 per cent in the (next) five years,” the State Government said in a statement.

“The Baluk Balert Barring Early Parenting Centre respects cultural practices and addresses the unique needs of parents, carers, children and local Aboriginal communities.”

Warm welcome for Vipra

While the Peninsula might be somewhat removed from tropical Far North Queensland – both geographically and weather-wise – its residents have extended a warm welcome to Mornington Peninsula Dental Clinic’s newest team member, dentist Dr Vipra Singh.

Originally from Fiji, Vipra and her parents moved to Australia in 2003, making their way to sunny FNQ where their small family put down roots for more than 20 years. It was in Cairns that Vipra graduated from James Cook University with a Bachelor of Dental Surgery.

Being born into a developing nation, Vipra witnessed firsthand the importance that access to health care has to overall quality of life. For that reason, she worked in the public sector, serving underprivileged communities across rural and remote areas as well as in Townsville, Ingham and Darwin with Queensland Health. She quickly became a senior dentist and led her own team at Ingham Oral Health Services, where she gained invaluable experience working with special needs patients and those undergoing head and neck radiation therapy.

Vipra has a special interest in minor oral surgery and restorative dentistry. However, her favourite part of being a dentist is meeting and hearing the stories of her patients. To her, the patients are the most rewarding part of her career.

Having swapped her sunscreen and beach gear for a puffer jacket and umbrella, Vipra will be moving to Melbourne to be with her partner. When away from the dental chair, she enjoys spending quality time with her family and beloved border collie, Ladoo, while finding joy in exploring artistic pursuits and hobbies.

Needles aren’t always scary

Dancing usually involves a lot of footwork, but a group of kind-hearted souls are also working their hands to bring a little comfort to children in hospital.

Carmel Drake, who teaches members of the Come Dance With Me group at Rosebud’s Over 50’s Social Club, last year encouraged the group to take up their knitting needles and craft trauma teddies for the Rosebud and Frankston hospitals. They began in October and have so far knitted 150 teddies, which have been given to children in the hospitals’ emergency wards to calm and comfort them during what can often be a traumatic time.

The group’s goal is to donate 1000 teddies before the end of the year, and it’s calling on other keen knitters to give them a hand. The pattern, wool and stuffing will all be provided.

If you’d like to help, give Carmel a call on 0417 371 868.

NEW CANCER CLINIC ‘A WONDERFUL ASSET’

A retired obstetrician and gynaecologist has become one of the first patients to undergo treatment at the new Icon Cancer Centre at The Bays.

Dr Geoff Wicks, who spent more than 50 years caring for the Mornington Peninsula community and who turned 100 last November, is being treated for skin cancer after discovering a lesion on his nose last year. It’s his second battle with cancer after he was diagnosed with and successfully treated for prostate cancer in the early 2000s.

After being advised to undergo radiation therapy for his skin cancer, Dr Wicks opted to wait to have his treatment by radiation oncologist Dr David Blakey at Icon at The Bays, which

opened at the start of the year as the first radiation oncology service on the Peninsula.

“Given my age, I can’t drive anymore, so I rely on my family and friends to take me to my daily (radiation therapy) treatments,” Dr Wicks said. “I didn’t want to travel to Frankston each day, so I decided to wait until the new centre opened.

“This new service is a wonderful asset for people living on the Mornington Peninsula. It’s marvellous to have such high-calibre cancer treatments now available in Mornington. I can’t speak highly enough of the care I have received at the new centre. Dr Blakey and the team at Icon have been very kind to me.”

The centre provides radiation therapy technology and techniques for all cancer types, including HyperArc for brain cancer, stereotactic radiation therapy for precision treatment of small tumours, and tattoo-less radiation therapy using an advanced Varian TrueBeam linear accelerator. A radiation therapy planning CT scanner allows patients to have their planning sessions and treatment in one location;

they also have access to specialist breast care and prostate care nurses on site as well as allied health and support services including dietetics, physiotherapy, and a social worker. In addition, The Bays Hospital provides chemotherapy, pharmacy, pathology and radiology services, and there are no waiting lists for consultation and treatment.

Geoff Wicks is full of praise for the team at Icon at The Bays.

STARS April

Mar 21-Apr 19 Mercury the communication planet re-enters Aries on April 16. With sensitive Neptune also in your sign, you may have a lot to say regarding current worries. Resolve to come out stronger, be creative and keep things in perspective. New paths beckon around the new moon on April 28.

Apr 20-May 20 Your intuition will be highlighted this month, so dismiss scary dreams and subconscious fears and hang out with loyal friends. The Taurus new moon on April 28 provides confidence regarding new directions. A new look or environmental change could boost your morale.

May 21-Jun 20 During this personal reaping season, many Geminis will reassess past decisions, but pace yourself and avoid hasty changes before April 7. With eyes wide open during the full moon on April 13, you can continue to enjoy your success. Others are relying on you.

Jun 21-Jul 22 New work, study or other group activities can open the door to special friendships and improve your status. Finances may be an issue so be cautious of impulsive, long-term commitments. Clearer thinking after April 7 will help you to prepare for the new moon and new beginnings on April 28.

Jul 23-Aug 22 Dynamic Mars enters Leo on April 18, where it remains until June, heightening your competitive team spirit. Great for physical strength and initiative, provided you look before you leap. Discipline and wisdom are required if you are to benefit from great prospects at the end of the month.

Aug 23-Sep 22 Despite the heavy demands made by others, Virgos are enjoying a season of success. Be guided by your own common sense and defer financial decisions until after April 7, when your planetary ruler Mercury offers increased clarity. Even then, check the fine print.

Sep 23-Oct 22 Your good health and everyday issues require your attention. During this period of giving back, keep your eyes open and listen to the experts who can help resolve your concerns. After the full moon on April 13, your path should flow more freely towards a successful outcome.

Oct 23-Nov 22 The new moon in Taurus on April 28 highlights your partnership sector, suggesting new conditions for you and/or your partner. Dynamic new work options around April 18 when Mars enters your work and status sector, increasing the ‘all or nothing’ flavour.

Nov 23-Dec 21 Despite home and family occupying your thoughts, that special person is always there to help boost your confidence. You are in a very creative phase, so remember that ups and downs can be minimised with a new or revised plan around the new moon on April 28.

W: astrologycosmobiology.com.au

Dec 22-Jan 20 Your motto this month should be ‘busy minds are happy minds’. Your communication sector is very intense but your creative sector could offer a solid path by the end of the month. Pace yourself and plan some artistic, fun activities with loved ones.

Jan 21-Feb 19 When lively Mars enters your partnership sector on April 18, an assertive person could enter your circle, unsettling well-laid plans. As there could be more talk than action, put a hold on money arguments and check financial details. Trust your past experience.

Feb 20-Mar 20 As you are an eternal caretaker of others, perhaps it is time to plan a break, however short. A new attitude and temporary escape will do wonders for your health and selfesteem. Friends and family members have some valuable suggestions.

The garden is calling Heronswood

April in the garden with Diggers

The cooler days of autumn are the ideal time for wandering the garden path and taking on some overdue garden renovation and seasonal rejuvenation. Visiting gardens is one of the best ways to draw inspiration for your own garden, and Heronswood at Dromana is a working garden with loads of practical ideas as well as yummy snacks and terrific coffee!

Garden tasks

Autumn shows its colours in many ways, from deciduous trees to stately seedheads. Summer flowering perennials are ready for their annual cut back and a fresh application of mulch will go a long way to sprucing up your great outdoors.

The hot dry summer in Victoria has taken its toll on soils, so the application of organic matter (compost, aged manure and mulch) is key to keeping your soil alive and healthy. Make this part of your annual maintenance ritual and you’ll be rewarded with ample growth next spring.

Apples and pears are fruiting now with espalier fruit trees showcasing how to grow an abundance of produce in a small space. Fruit trees require netting to prevent ripening fruit from being damaged by birds and possums, but always use netting that meets current Victorian guidelines and pull tight to prevent injury to wildlife. You can also use fruit protection bags to protect individual fruits on small cropping trees.

Get out in the garden!

This Easter, why not visit Heronswood Gardens to enjoy our ‘Get out in the Garden’ Trail? Families can pick up our trail sheet to investigate how many types of trees we have in our historic formal garden. Complete the sheet and collect your small gardens prize from the retail shop!

Garden entry: Adults $15; Free for Diggers members and children under 16.

Heronswood highlights

Autumn has a cool, green mellowness after a long hot summer. Heronswood head gardener, Bill Bampton, suggests keeping an eye out for:

◆ Autumn leaves on the Ginkgoes, Zelkova and Elms and bright red Virginia Creeper on the house.

◆ The beginning of the cool season salvias like Salvia ‘Anthony Parker’ and Salvia involucrata.

◆ The last of the dahlias before winter.

Not all bad apples

Real estate agents often get a bad rap as dishonest, self-serving, and greedy. A Roy Morgan report found only 7 per cent of Australians rated agents for honesty and ethics, and an ethics and honesty survey rated agents 28th out of 30. The Governance Institute of Australia’s Ethics Index ranked real estate agents as among the least trustworthy professionals.

It’s a sad state of affairs, but the industry is making changes. Historically, the entry bar to becoming an agent was pretty low, with no qualifications or training required. Significant recent legislative changes have increased the minimum training standards required to become an agent’s representative or licensed agent.

Consumer Affairs and the Real Estate Institute of Victoria enforce the laws applicable to real estate agents, as do the ATO and ASIC. Agents are required to comply with very strict laws and risk heavy penalties, fines and deregistration if they don’t.

The Estate Agents Act 1980 is the cornerstone piece of legislation that regulates the conduct of agents in Victoria.

Legislation has also improved around ‘material facts’, which is any detail about a property that a reasonable person would recognise as relevant to a decision, and its suppression would likely lead to a different outcome. In property services, these are facts that could influence a buyer, seller, or renter's decision. An agent must declare, as in volunteer without being asked, anything they know about a property that would affect a buyer’s decision to purchase.

In reality, the real estate industry is heavily regulated, but that doesn't mean dodgy real agents aren't out there. Beware the agent who speaks negatively about other agents or their listings. Beware the agent who pressures you to make a decision. Do your research. We’re not all bad. In fact, most agents are hardworking, caring, honest, and genuinely want to help.

Coastal Agents wishes you a happy and safe Easter.

The ExperienceBuilding Elevating

HAVE YOU EVER FELT THE WEIGHT OF A MAJOR DECISION, THE KIND THAT KEEPS YOU UP AT NIGHT?

Ryan Whiteside and his wife Chloe

Building or renovating a home is one of the most exciting yet nerveracking journeys a homeowner can take. Between endless decisions, complex regulations and significant financial commitments, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.

At KWA, we understand these challenges firsthand. Our role is to bring clarity, confidence and protection to the process, ensuring that every step forward is one taken with certainty.

Building success isn’t the responsibility of just one professional; it’s a collaboration. Architects, building designers, engineers, builders and consultants all have a duty to deliver a compliant and high-quality outcome. As a boutique building surveying consultancy, KWA serves as the safeguard, ensuring that every professional fulfills their responsibility and that every client’s investment is protected.

By the time a project reaches the building permit stage, homeowners have already poured considerable time, effort and financial resources into their vision. It’s a moment where excitement often turns into anxiety, with budgets stretched and uncertainties setting in. As a team, we don’t just issue building permits; we guide, educate and advocate for our clients, ensuring they feel supported at this critical stage.

With a strong presence across Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula, we have redefined

excellence and a new standard in building surveying. Our detail-oriented approach ensures projects meet the highest industry standards, delivering not just compliance but a seamless, well-managed process that minimises risk and uncertainty for all involved.

I have lived this experience firsthand. My wife and I recently completed our own architectural build, a journey that was both exhilarating and overwhelming.

We faced an endless stream of decisions, navigated cost escalations, and wrestled with the natural fears that come with investing in your new home. We were fortunate to work alongside some of the industry’s best – Magnus Construction, Plume Studio, and interior designer Kate Walker – who guided and supported us through this process. But despite having experts in our corner, the emotional highs and lows were still very real.

More than just a personal milestone, it has provided invaluable market research that has shaped the way we operate at KWA. We have further refined our approach to ensure that every client receives not just a service but a tailored experience that considers every aspect of their journey. Our role is to safeguard, guide and advocate, ensuring that owners feel supported from start to finish.

We recognise that by the time clients reach us, they’ve already endured months – if not years – of planning, budgeting and decision-

making. Our responsibility is to be their trusted partner, ensuring they can move forward with confidence. Every member of our team is committed to providing clarity, expertise and unwavering support so that our clients feel secure and confident in their new project.

In construction, success is built on collaboration. Every professional has a duty to ensure the owner’s interests are safeguarded. We take that responsibility seriously. We don’t just approve building permits; we provide assurance, expertise, and a client-first approach that transforms what can be an overwhelming process into a seamless, guided experience.

With each passing year, we have witnessed the Mayfair inspire a new generation of designs, each infused with the same principles of adaptability and thoughtful design that made the original so beloved. Repair and restoration

The Stop the Rot motto is “We’ve never met a window we can’t fix”. They have been repairing rotting timber windows across Melbourne’s Bayside suburbs for more than 20 years and have now expanded to the Mornington Peninsula.

Their Peninsula team, led by senior technicians Aviv Peretz and local boy Josh Davis, will assess the damage to your windows and tailor Stop the Rot’s unique methodology to their repair and restoration. This proven method has been implemented by the company’s founders and developed over years repairing windows in some of Melbourne’s most exclusive suburbs and homes. The technicians use their joinery skills to rebuild your window frames in situ rather than a short-term, unsightly DIY ‘painter’s fix’. This method is attempted by others but delivered only by the STR team of 12.

BUILDING A DREAM

THE DAVIS MADE JOURNEY

Louise and Warren Davis started their journey with nothing but a dream and a passion for transforming homes.

What began as small-scale renovations has grown into Davis Made Building, a thriving business on the Mornington Peninsula specialising in custom luxury homes and duplex developments.

The early days weren’t easy. With limited finances, every project was a risk, and balancing their growing family with the demands of construction was a constant challenge. But through sheer determination, hard work and a shared vision, they built a reputation for highquality craftsmanship and innovative design.

With three children and a flourishing business, they’ve gained the financial freedom they once only hoped for. Now living and building in Red Hill, a new building project awaits them. Their success is a testament to resilience, teamwork, and the belief that with dedication anything is possible.

Davis Made Building continues to shape the Peninsula’s landscape – one custom home at a time.

A WANDER WHILE YOU WATER

WORKS WONDERS

Where’s the rain? Gardening in these dry periods can be a tricky proposition if we are not tending to our crops on a daily basis. We cannot simply plant and forget then wait until harvest. Most of our edible plants will require constant moisture for optimum growth and abundant pickings, and when the soil begins to dry out they can quickly turn up their toes and the quality and size of our rewards will be diminished.

Those without a well-functioning irrigation system will find the lack of rain is leading to endless hours of hand-watering, though there are some positives here. Spending time both morning and afternoon in the garden helps us to become intimately familiar with our plants and we achieve a deeper understanding of how they grow, flower and fruit. With each swish of the hose we notice where new shoots are coming from, what insects are around at particular times of the day, and when we need to stake or tie up our taller crops. We can also have regular nibbles of both

leaf and fruit to assess when things might be ready for the kitchen.

Pests and diseases can also be monitored more effectively the more we are out in the garden. There’s nothing worse than your favourite fruit or vegetable being inundated with pest insects or devoured by rats or possums. The more we are observing our gardens, the quicker we can get onto pest issues and take steps to remedy the situation. A few white butterflies hovering around our leafy greens in the afternoon will inform us that the few holes appearing in the leaves will likely be caused by their little green munchers. And those small caterpillars will grow at an alarming rate and smash a kale or broccoli in a matter of days unless kept in check. Similarly with our fruit trees: pests such as the pear and cherry slug can be promptly taken care of if we address them early. However, if left alone for too long they can decimate a small tree and you’ll be tearing your hair out in disappointment.

While daily hand-watering hopefully leads to daily observation of your garden, installing an irrigation system need not prevent the same level of attention. Drippers and sprays do not care for your crops; they are but one part of the regular care your garden requires. And irrigation systems can fail also. The battery in your timer may run out of power, a solenoid valve may fail, or you might just get a blowout in your irrigation line. In saying that, though, installing an irrigation system really is an important way to keep constant soil moisture levels and happier plants. A daily walk around will always lead to better outcomes and will help you understand your garden much more than just planting and leaving until harvest. Continuous learning and improvement will be rewarded.

HAPPY HARVESTING!

NEW PARK A PERFECT FIT FOR SENIORS

A park designed to provide a safe and accessible space for seniors to stay active, build strength and balance, and connect with others has opened at Mount Martha. Billed at the Peninsula’s first dedicated exercise space for older residents, the Dunns Road Senior Exercise Park has been provided by Mornington Peninsula Shire in partnership with the National Ageing Research Institute.

“This park is all about supporting healthy ageing, offering a space where seniors can improve their fitness in a safe, social and enjoyable environment,” the shire said in a statement. “It not only promotes physical health but also provides opportunities for social interaction,

helping to reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation among seniors.”

It includes 16 exercise stations focused on strength, balance, flexibility, and coordination; equipment designed especially for seniors and featuring both stable and unstable surfaces for safe balance training and fall prevention; and new seating areas for rest and social interaction. It’s also near a children’s playground, so grandparents and grandchildren can enjoy some extra time together.

The park complements the Hastings Foreshore seniors' exercise equipment, which was expected to be ready for use as Mornington Peninsula Magazine went to print. “Together, these

initiatives align with the We All Belong strategy, which focuses on creating inclusive spaces for people of all ages and backgrounds,” the shire said.

Mayor Anthony Marsh said the shire was proud to be supporting active ageing on the Peninsula. “This new exercise park is a fantastic addition to

our community, giving seniors a safe and accessible space to stay active,” Cr Marsh said.

For more information or to learn how to use the equipment, contact the shire’s Positive Ageing team at positiveageing@mornpen.vic.gov.au

FOR SENIORS

Did you know that the percentage of people aged 65 or older with earwax impaction is reported to be as high as 34 per cent?

If you experience earache, itching, tinnitus (ringing or buzzing in the ears), vertigo or hearing loss, it might be because you have excessive or impacted earwax. If that’s the case, you should see the specialists in microsuction earwax removal at Viva Hearing.

Microsuction has become widely recognised as the gold standard for efficient and safe earwax removal. It’s an advanced procedure that uses a specialised suction device under direct visualisation, allowing for precise and controlled removal of earwax while significantly reducing

the risk of trauma to the ear canal and eardrum.

Unlike traditional ear syringing, microsuction is quick, comfortable, and does not require the use of eardrops beforehand. It is particularly beneficial for seniors looking to improve their hearing without the discomfort or potential infection risks associated with syringing.

For this month only, eligible Pension Concession Card and Seniors Cardholders can receive free microsuction earwax removal at Viva Hearing. To find out more, phone 9322 3222 today.
