GROUNDBREAKING CEREMONY - Allen Harim has officially broken ground to begin the construction phase of a new $22 million state-of-the-art hatchery on Delmarva. The new 70,000 square-foot facility will be built on the company’s 19.84-acre site on Nine Foot Road in Dagsboro. The Dagsboro hatchery was built in 1973 by Cargill, and was purchased by the former Allen Family Foods in 1988. The 38,000-square-foot facility is being used as the backup hatchery for the company, due to the age of the equipment and the infrastructure. The new building’s footprint will encompass the old structure, and require all new equipment and systems throughout. It will take about a year to build, and once it is operational, the company will close its main hatchery in Seaford. Employees at both facilities will be offered jobs at the new hatchery or at other Allen Harim operations. From left: Allen Harim Chief Financial Officer Brian Hildreth, Senior Director of Live Operations Rory DeWeese, Executive Director of Corporate Strategies Dr. Key Lee, Rep. Rich Collins (R-41st), Sen. Gerald Hocker (D-20th), Governor John Carney (D-Del), Allen Harim President and CEO Joe Moran, Sussex County Council President Michael Vincent, Sussex County Councilman Rob Arlett, Dagsboro Mayor Brian Baull, Rep. Dave Wilson (R-35th) and Rep. Ruth Briggs King (R-37th).

Do you need umbrella insurance?

If personal umbrella insurance covers personal liability claims against someone and prove to be important, will commercial umbrella insurance for my business prove the same? Commercial umbrella insurance works similarly to personal umbrellas so that if there are any accidents that happen with your business and your existing insurance plans can’t cover the expenses, the umbrella insurance can step in and help. Umbrella insurance for businesses can act as an extension of insurance where your existing auto and general liability insurance reaches its threshold. An umbrella insurance policy can mean the difference between a business surviving, or not. So now you may be thinking about the instances where commercial umbrella insurance may help you. Here are some examples that may help you get an idea of the accidents that could happen: • Floor cleaning is happening and a customer walks over a slippery area and injures themselves. Medical costs may rack up to much more than what your general policy can allow. • An employee causes a multi-vehicle accident using a company car. The damages, costs of repair, and medical costs extend much further than what your existing commercial auto policy can cover. • A customer may have difficulty opening a door at the entry of your business because of air pressure and injures themselves by pushing or pulling too hard. Their medical costs were much higher than expected and can partially be afforded with an existing insurance plan. Commercial umbrella insurance can protect you from potential catastrophic damage to your business. A point to consider about this insurance is that higher limits may be necessary for businesses with high loss potential, high profile, sizable sales, numerous assets, large auto fleets, worldwide presence and significant public exposure. Every business is different so please contact us to find out how commercial umbrella insurance may help you and how to get the best value for a plan to meet your needs. Chesapeake Utilities honored

Chesapeake Utilities Corporation has been named 2017 Kent County Tourism Partner of the Year in recognition of the company’s collaboration on creating a positive environmental impact, and advancing tourism, within Kent County. The award was presented by the Kent County Tourism Office during the 27th annual Celebration of Tourism in Kent County on Nov. 2, at Dover Downs in Dover. Chesapeake Utilities most recently teamed up with Kent County Tourism on the tourism office’s new compressed natural gas-fueled (CNG) mobile visitor center, The Villager, which will travel across the region and share the message of why Kent County is a high-quality tourist destination. This unique partnership supports the environment through a reduction in carbon footprint; the American Gas Association estimates that CO2 emissions in a CNGfueled vehicle are 20 to 30 percent lower than in vehicles using traditional fuels. The company’s employees have also supported Kent County tourism yearround through events like Dover Days, the Delaware Beer and Wine Festival, and the Amish Country Bike Tour.

TOURISM

Keeping up-to-date with Southern Delaware Tourism By Tina Coleman Southern Delaware Tourism

With the New Year right around the corner, at Southern Delaware Tourism we’re starting to think about filling up our 2018 calendar. Our website calendar is just one of the many ways we promote and encourage year-round tourism in Sussex County, but it’s a really big one. Getting the word out about the events, activities, and festivals taking place here throughout the year for visitors to enjoy during their stays or to plan their visits around is a crucial part of our promotion efforts. Our social media posts flow largely from our calendar, as do our monthly consumer newsletters and our weekly hotel alerts. People will be planning weekend getaways and annual vacations very soon, so it’s important that our calendar be as up to date as possible as early as possible. We are working now to populate the calendar with events scheduled to take place throughout 2018. FUN FACT: The Southern Delaware Tourism 2017 Calendat listed more than 2,500 events. In the right hand sidebar of our website at www.visitsoutherndela- ware.com sits an Upcoming Events block. The bottom of the block con- tains an Add Event link where your event details can be uploaded. Events can also be emailed to us at south- del@visitsoutherndelaware.com . If you are sending us a listing and want to include a photo too (which we strongly encourage) please send your listing and your photo to the email address above rather than through the website form. Additionally, if you have a flyer with event info you’d like to send, please send it attached to the same email. Just keep in mind that even when you send a flyer, you will still need to type the details of your event into the body of your email to allow us to copy and paste it into our

calendar. If you are an Arts and Entertainment partner, upload your listing to www. DelawareScene.com. Listings are downloaded from that website to our calendar every week. We’re currently in the process of redoing the Southern Delaware Tourism website with a new and improved, very eye-catching version launching in early 2018, so the process for uploading events will change somewhat but will remain user friendly. If you’re not sure your event is appropriate for listing in our calendar or social media, know that our listings and posts consist of items that are touristcentric community events, activities, and festivals, most involving collaborations of multiple tourism partners. We generally do not post events to our calendar that are presented by businesses unless

they are likely to draw visitors from 40 or more miles away; however we are sometimes able to share such events via our Facebook and/or Twitter accounts. Businesses can also share their offerings or events with more than 17,000 subscribers to e-Scapes, our monthly consumer newsletter. For information about e-Scapes, email Lana O’Holleran, Marketing Manager, at lanao@visitsoutherndelaware.com. We know that you’re still really, really busy with 2017 and the holidays and that your 2018 calendar is probably the farthest thing from your mind, but throughout the coming year please try to submit your events at least three months in advance so our visitors will always know what they have to look forward to when planning their travel to Southern Delaware.

COVER STORY

The Women’s Business Center begins an exciting new chapter

Delaware is a great place to be an entrepreneur – and now, an even better place to be woman entrepreneur. It’s been nearly a month since John Carney signed House Bill 226 as a first step towards revamping the state’s economic development strategy to focus on innovation and entrepreneurship. Soon, the Division of Small Business, Development, and Tourism (replacing the former DEDO) will join as another resource to promote entrepreneurism in the State. With so much current energy and buzz behind entrepreneurism, where should a female entrepreneur begin? What’s the best place to connect to guidance and training needed to launch a business and where can an existing business find resources and support to grow and thrive in the First State? The Cleaning Girl Polishes Her Brand with WBC Support Just ask Kelly Jones, CEO of The Cleaning Girl. Kelly started her business in 2013, offering one-of-a-kind, package pricing through an online booking platform. She provides affordable cleaning services and products, as well as a wealth of helpful tips and information she shares with clients via her website and blog. Kelly proudly boasts her business is 100 percent women-owned and operated, from the cleaning teams to her bookkeeper and marketing team. “It’s important to us…to be aligned with the goal of supporting women in every way,” she notes. Kelly recently moved her business into the franchise arena – a major goal for The Cleaning Girl. She next looks to develop partnerships for a training program for women to enter the business as employees and eventually be funneled into a franchisee track. Kelly notes that her industry has one of the highest turnover rates; her goal is to establish simple processes that create productive, trustworthy, proactive employees and future businesswomen. But Kelly also acknowledges she wouldn’t be where she is without the help of an invaluable partner: the Women’s Business Center (WBC) at First State Community Loan Fund. ‘A supportive sisterhood,’ as she describes it. “It’s this incredible network of women who are there to support each other,” Kelly says of the WBC. “There’s a real feeling of trust within the organization 14

because everyone is there for the same reason. We’re all there to grow and succeed.” Rhonda Allen, co-owner of Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Transport Services LLC goes further. “To me, it’s more than a sisterhood,” she notes. “If you’re not sure of what to do – and it could be anything; not necessarily related to your industry – you

can connect with the WBC network for honest, experienced feedback.” Rhonda adds that it’s priceless for her to learn about others’ experiences, even if out of her direct business circle. “Even if they’re not telling me ‘what to do,’ they’re telling me ‘what not to do.’” The WBC, based in Wilmington and Georgetown, offers clients intensive train-

ing in development of business plans, financing, social media and market analysis. Training is complemented by opportunities for new businesses to be mentored by existing, successful business owners. In addition, a series of events throughout the year reinforce learned skills and provide networking opportunities. Corrinne Cooper, CEO of Phenomenal Moments Event Planning, started her business plan from scratch with the WBC, “I knew how to plan events well, but I didn’t have the business plan I needed to apply for funding. From the first time I sat down with the WBC to discuss my business concerns and needs, eight months later I had a completed business plan.” She even received notoriety for her plan, adding, “Not only was it completed, but I won first place at the City of Wilmington’s Small Business Success Series, thanks to being a member of the WBC!” Statewide Resources = Increased Open Doors for Women Entrepreneurs The WBC’s new director is breathing new life into the program. Sara Crawford-Jones was named director in July 2017 and is already making a significant impact. One of the first programs under Sara’s tenure was New Castle County’s November 2017 Shop Small Marketplace, held at The Delaware Contemporary. The event showcased products and services from over 25 women-owned businesses, and served as a holiday kickoff and networking event. “As my first large-scale event as the new head of WBC, I couldn’t have been more pleased with our participation numbers and the positive vibe we generated,” Sara smiles. Sara is also welcoming new talent to her team, and is in the process of hiring a new Business Advisor as WBC’s new contact for entrepreneurs in Kent and Sussex County, making their reach statewide. The WBC’s Kent and Sussex County goals include identifying constituents in need and working to connect them to the resources they value most, whether it be training, networking or both. “It’s exciting to be able to bring our offerings to women across our state,” Sara says. “We have such a wealth of energetic, talented, professional women here [in Delaware]. I look forward to leveraging their experiences and grow even more businesses to the next level of success.” WBC’s Strong Roots = Solid

Support from Beginning to End There’s another important feature of the WBC that is sure to have every female Delaware entrepreneur’s ears burning: the WBC is a partner of First State Community Loan Fund, one of two Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) located in Delaware which are exceptionally entrepreneur-friendly. This partnership allows women entrepreneurs to access critical capital through a variety of loan and grant programs, whether the need is for start-up seed money, working capital or even brick-and-mortar property acquisition. And the WBC won’t disappear after you’ve started a business; they provide valuable business and technical assistance throughout your connection -- pre- and post-loan, whether you’re in need of capital or just some honest feedback. Megan Varley, owner of Wilmington-based New Life Floors, has found her ongoing mentorship with her WBC counselor and the training courses valuable as she continues to grow and navigate her business path. “There’s no magic bullet to running a business,” she says. To be successful, Megan knows she must be aware of current issues in the business world. The WBC is able to help her stay on top of critical topics, which is why she chosen to continue attending monthly workshops. “I decided my business was worth it, and I’m putting my efforts into the WBC,” she says proudly. “The WBC helps me stay focused and not get lost in my business.” Antoinette Blake, owner of A. Blake Enterprises whose moniker is “The Delaware Blogger,” has been involved with the WBC since 2015, taking advantage of the variety of courses offered. “Attending WBC courses really opened my eyes,” she recalls. “And the fact that I could do so on my own time was incredibly helpful as well.” Antoinette says the rPBS Business Planning Course helped streamline her business plan, making her more disciplined and more aware of other perspectives.

Sara Crawford-Jones

“When you’re starting out with your business and your passion, you feel you know…the best way to do it. These courses opened my mind and made me think of new things.” WBC – We Bring Collaboration! Resource Link owner to women: You can turn your passion into a business

By Carol Kinsley

Cheryl Doucette, owner of Resource Link Consulting LLC, has a message for women: “Even if you don’t see yourself as a business owner, you can turn your passion and what matters most to you into a business.” Business women are often thought of as working their way up the corporate ladder to a high-powered executive position, Doucette explained, “but any one of us, at any time, can parlay what we’re passionate about into a business.” Doucette’s passion is giving back to her community. A cancer diagnosis in 2004 changed her work life as

well as her personal life. The support she received from Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition led her to volunteer to support others in their cancer journey. Three years later, she began a career with DBCC in outreach and education. She had previously worked in management in retail and service-related industries, Losing a nephew in 2015 made her realize she needed to expand her outreach to include addiction, homelessness, early learning and more. She is currently project director for the Sussex County Health

The Salon by INSTYLE is a full service salon offering a wide range of services and products for the entire family including cuts, color and style as well as nail services and facial and massage treatments.

RIBBON CUTTING - The Rehoboth-Dewey Beach Chamber of Commerce welcomed First State Inventory with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Nov. 3. This past August, brothers Jim and Vince Stinchecum developed First State Inventory which provides personal property inventory services for residential and commercial needs. Jim’s prior experience includes service in the U.S. Army, 25 years as a master plumber and experience as a project manager for both the private sector and the government while brother Vince has experience in security and telecommunications as well as owning and operating a nationwide transportation business for over five years. The brothers are familiar with the painstaking process of preparing a detailed inventory after living through the process in 1990 with the loss of their childhood home to a fire. They are aware that most people have the knowledge and tools available to complete an inventory themselves, but due to the demands of today’s fast-paced lifestyle, the task can be daunting. In addition to preparedness documentation that assists with disaster recovery, their inventory service assists with many other life events and business activities that require or benefit from a list of personal assets. Mike Hartman, founder of Nationwide Inventory Professionals, stated, “It’s great to work with a partnership of two brothers. They have the same personal experience, and both have a heart to serve others. We are excited to have them as a licensee.” Pictured from left: Joy Kidd, RBDBCC; Jim Stinchecum; Vince Stinchecum; and Kathy McGuiness, City of Rehoboth Beach commissioner.

The Greater Georgetown Chamber of Commerce is excited to announce and welcome Kevin Thompson as the organization’s new Director of Operations. He will be responsible for providing strategic leadership to the Chamber by working with the Board of Directors and Chamber Members to establish long-range goals, plans, and policies. Kevin comes to the Chamber with 12+ years of experience in the marketing, IT, hospitality, events, and automotive fields. His most recent experience is with Tunnell Companies L.P., owner of Baywood Greens and Pot-Nets Communities, where he held the position of Director of IT & Social Media. While there, he was instrumental in the implementation of the company’s social media and email marketing programs, and was consistently utilized as a team member on major projects, including the creation of the Vacation Rentals program. He played a key role in other departments as well, managing the Baywood Clubhouse’s Valet Program and assisting with day-of event coordination for the Events Department. A Sussex County native, Kevin received his education at Cape Henlopen High School, holds a diploma in Collision & Refinishing Technology from Wyoming Technical Institute, and graduated at the top of his class at Delaware Technical Community College with an AA in Marketing. “I’m thrilled to be a part of the Chamber,” says Thompson, “I like to think my varied background gives me a unique perspective when it comes to problem solving and creative thinking. I hope to be able to help the Chamber and its members grow more successful and make the Town of Georgetown a destination for everyone in the County!” Donna Koskey, 2018 Georgetown Chamber President and owner of Chardon Jewelers LTD in downtown Georgetown, said “We are so excited to have Kevin onboard! His experience across different industries and his unique point of view are sure to be an asset to the Georgetown Chamber. I’m confident that Kevin will play a vital part in the future success of the Chamber and its members.” 21

Eight tips to increase your website user experience By Patricia Rivera

If you’re thinking about tweaking your website in 2018, or giving it a complete overhaul, now is the time to examine it for user experience (UX). Usability.gov, a leading resource for UX best practices, explains that UX focuses on a deep understanding of users: their needs, their values, their abilities, and their limitations. Given all the competition on the Internet, usability is more important than ever in gaining new customers or clients. Web users want to find information, and they want to find it quickly. The best websites fulfill the usability criteria while offering information that is engaging, informative, persuasive, and helpful. As you or your marketing professional take on the task of revamping your website, making it user-friendly should be at the forefront of every word of text on every page, and every visual. Peter Morville, a pioneer in the fields of information architecture and UX, notes that for information to offer a valuable UX, it must be: Useful Usable

Desirable Findable Accessible Credible These eight tips will get you thinking along those lines: Keep it simple. Don’t burden visitors with convoluted text. Reading actually burns calories and can tire readers, causing them to leave your website for something easier to read. Know your target audience. Craft your website to speak directly to them. As you add content, think about whether it’s relevant or important to them. Make your web pages scannable. Website readers don’t read every word. Write and design your webpages so you’re using headers and subheaders, bold text, and bulleted lists. Avoid stiff, business-like writing. Use a conversational tone that appeals to your audience. Encourage different ways to explore. Provide plenty of links, click buttons, and sharing capabilities. And make sure they all work. Use lots of white space. Crazy Egg, a software that determines how visitors interact with websites, found that use of white space between paragraphs and in the left and right margins increases comprehension by almost 20 percent. A Stanford University study also showed that the use of white space in the overall page design

is a key determinant to building online trust with users. Assign a purpose to each page. A Home page should easily tell visitors what you do and what they should do. Your About page Rivera should concisely establish your credibility. A Contact page should instantly put the client in touch with you without filling out lengthy forms. Don’t try to do too much or say too much on any given page. Choose calls to action carefully. Use consistent language in your calls to action. Don’t confuse visitors by giving unclear instructions. Create emotional connections that lead to action. By putting people first on your website pages and through your marketing philosophy, you improve the quality of your relationship with them. And you make your website a friendly and useful tool.
