If I didn’t know who they were already, I wouldn’t be able to pick them out from the crowd of students in the dining hall. But there is a slight difference to their presence – they walk around and discuss their upcoming set with a confidence unfamiliar to university students. They are veterans after all, returning to the Morningside stage after nearly five years away. Tonight, according to Chaichon “Poh” Wongkham ’21, is “a snapshot” of what he and fellow MC alumni Sally Choi ’21, Julian Yen ’22, and Christie Leung ’22 got up to in the past as an MC band.
The four of them entered university already attracted to music. While Poh was primed as a professional jazz player from a young age, Christie’s background in a traditional school setting meant she was easily impressed by the band equipment at Morningside. She had sung in competitions and performed before, but she saw keyboards and guitars and thought, “Dude, that’s cool.” Back in Taiwan, Julian beatboxed in a club that would eventually lead to an original graduation song finding YouTube fame. Sally – who is insistent on separating herself from the

other “three musical geniuses” – had always enjoyed music, despite it not being a priority in her South Korean high school. But really, she notes, she “like[ed] stage time… entertaining people... attention.”
Like all bands, their lineup went through different rotations. Originally, Sally and Julian played with some other Morningsiders in what she calls not “a proper band,” but more of a “who wants to perform at communal, that kind of a thing.” She remembers hearing about Poh and immediately recognizing that he and Julian needed to meet – “His sax game is crazy!” And as Morningsiders still do today, they went out to the patio and started to sing. (They try to remember the song, some sort of Alicia Keys? “Empire State of Mind” maybe?) Poh started blowing the saxophone, and Sally thought, “this man needs to be in our band.”
The next year, Christie’s arrival rounded out the band. To her, it felt “pretty cohesive from the start” and a bit refreshing. “I just used to play by myself, like a lot. I didn’t have this experience of hanging out or jamming with more musical people. It felt fun, and, like they also accepted me.”

最初,玹瑞和偉光是與其他晨興人組隊的,她說 當時還稱不上是一支正式的樂隊,只是一群因表 演而結合的人。她還記得當時從別人口中探聽到 Poh,就知道必須安排偉光與他見面:「他的色士風 演奏太瘋狂了!」他們於是相約在書院平台交流音 樂,就像今天的晨興人一樣。到底當時是交流哪首 歌,是Alicia Keys的作品?是不是《Empire State of Mind》?大家已經想不起來了。最深刻的是,當 Poh一開始吹色士風,玹瑞就堅信:「這個人一定要 加入我們!」

They’re clear though – cohesion doesn’t mean unanimity. They all came from different backgrounds and gravitated toward different genres. In the beginning, Sally notes that they were strangers, and later on, “We just got to know how each other works.” She highlights Poh and Julian as “the creative directors” of the band who were able to catch on to each member’s musical ability and desires. At times, they knew when to add a certain instrument or how to arrange Ariana Grande to have a jazzy twist, so that they weren’t just compromising, but learning how to incorporate their preferences into other people’s songs.
Trying to please everyone in a band comprised of varied interests and experience was “indeed quite challenging,” Poh says, “both on a technical and personal level.” Christie chimes in, “He’s saying that because he’s too high level. We’re basically a bunch of idiots that he had to teach. For me, I was just happy to have someone play songs for me.” Sally explains that usually, bands practice by agreeing on a song, everyone learning their parts, and then eventually coming together. But for them, everything was improvisational. It eventually became their band name: “Life is Improvisation.”
These moments were the most fun, according to Julian. “It’s like crisis management, when something comes up out of our expectation, that’s when it’s the most engaging.” Sally adds that they did well because they didn’t practice something to perfection. “We always have a twist. On stage, that version was also a new version in a way.” Poh agrees – “That’s kind of where the magic happened always. We let things flow and see what we come up with. My favorite moments… were seeing everyone kind of freaked out [on stage]. But at the same time, everyone’s doing so well. I feel that kind of collective spirit that we’re going to smash
婧珩在第二年的加入,令樂隊更加完整。她覺得這 種一拍即合的感覺很新鮮:「我之前經常一個人玩 音樂,很少與其他人一起演出,這感覺很有趣,他 們也很接受我。」大家早已明白彼此之間的和而不 同 大家背景不同,喜愛的音樂類型也不同。玹瑞 回想一開始大家都很陌生,後來才漸漸找到默契。 她笑稱 Poh 和偉光是樂隊的「創作總監」,能夠恰如 其分地拿捏每位成員的能力和喜好。適當的時候, 大家自然會各自發揮加入某種樂器,或將 Ariana Grande 的作品改編成爵士曲風。重要的是不可一味 妥協,而是要嘗試將自己的風格融入其他作品中。

說:「每個人的興趣和經驗不同,無論是技術或 個人層面,要大家都滿意,互相磨合的確不容易。」 婧珩卻插話道:「他這樣說是因為他的水平太高了, 我們就像笨蛋一樣,要他來教,對我來說,有人伴 奏就很高興了。」玹瑞解釋大家通常是在選定一首歌 後,各自練習自己的部分,然後再一起排練。不過 他們一切貴乎即興,這亦成為了他們樂隊的名字: 「Life is Improvisation(生活即即興)」。
即興的瞬間,亦是樂趣的所在。根據偉光的說法: 「就像危機管理一樣,每當出現超乎預期的情況,就 是最高漲的一刻。」玹瑞認為樂隊之所以有火花,全 因沒有練習到完美:「每次都會有些變化,台上的 版本永遠是一個新版本。」Poh 亦深表贊同:「這就

this really hard together.” When they performed, Christie remembers it more “like a bunch of friends trying to have fun. That’s what I really liked about our band.”
All of them doubt they would have become the friends they are today if it weren’t for the band. As Sally mentions, “we’re just very different people. I don’t know if we would have naturally become friends, because there’s nothing that really binds us together other than music.” This sort of bond, Poh says, is “hard to come by.” Julian ties it more directly to the act of playing together itself, calling it a “really communal activity.” “We find common ground. We know how to calm each other down before going on stage.” As a band, Christie says you “have an understanding of each other that no one else can. You can’t put it into words.”
Being in the band forged their friendship, but it also helped each of them learn as individuals. Poh was used to a professional music culture before university, one with customs where everyone already understands each other. “Everything is fast. It’s efficient. Learning new ways to work with people is hard. It’s not that fun at first.” But he learned “that the way I do or see stuff is not always right.” Sometimes, it’s not even “about right or wrong.” Julian talks about “balance,” how he grew to recognize his own strengths and drawbacks as a musician. He also mentions Poh, how the latter’s jazz influence “opened up [his] musical taste as well.” They all concur on this point – that each of them began to appreciate different musical styles because of the others. Christie calls it “mindblowing.” “I learned so much that I can’t even describe it.” For Sally, the band marked a shift in her character. “I think I genuinely learned the joy of sharing the spotlight. And I loved seeing other people doing genres that I’ve never really been interested in.” She continues to sing

如果不是這樂隊,他們還會成為朋友嗎?玹瑞說: 「我們是截然不同的人,我不知道大家會不會走在一 起,因為除了音樂之外,我們沒有甚麼共通點。」對 於 Poh 來說,這種巧遇的確難得。偉光認為玩音樂 本身就是一種團隊活動:「我們找到了如何在上台前 讓彼此保持冷靜的默契。」作為樂隊成員,婧珩說他 們之間的了解,是外人無法明白,亦無法用言語說 清楚。
組成樂隊不但造就了友誼,還讓大家成長。 Poh 入 大學前已投入於專業的音樂世界,凡事有規有矩, 大家知己知彼:「我習慣一切都很快、很有效率,要 嘗試用新方式組樂隊很難,所以一開始覺得有點沒 趣。」後來他卻明白到自己不一定是對的,甚至「對 或錯」已不再重要了。偉光則學會了平衡,逐漸認 識到自己作為音樂人的長處與缺點。說起 Poh 的爵 士樂如何拓闊了他的音樂視野,各位隊友都認為大 家互相啟發,開始懂得欣賞不同的曲風。婧珩驚嘆 自己的成長:「我所學到的,簡直無法形容!」而對 玹瑞來說,組樂隊改變了她的性格:「我學會了享受 一起在聚光燈下的樂趣,我亦很喜歡別人表演一些

her praise of their camaraderie. “I feel like all of these realizations… or growth we had… could only be possible because we were all always genuine in what we do. We were all fully supportive of each other. Something just clicked.”
Like Julian notes, their band’s development was spurred in part by it being an informal or “low-stakes” affair. “We’re not trying to achieve anything [other than] having a good time.” Poh also mentions how having other MC bands around made it “much less intimidating,” so that they functioned more “as a music community.” Having this musical presence in the college, he says, is “essential” to pushing events like the concert tonight forward. The institutional support from the college and from Morningside Master Nick Rawlins and Dean of General Education Ann Huss, was also a factor. Sally remembers being brought to tears once by an original song Christie performed at a jam hosted by Professor Huss. “I still talk about it to this day. I still cry when I listen to it.”
That feeling, brought on by watching someone else perform or performing yourself, they say, is enough of a motivation to take part in something like Morningside’s music community. “You’re going to provide a service to everyone in the college,” Poh says, and those “few minutes of pure feeling” are something “you cannot get anywhere else.” Music is the foundation that these bands are built on, but each of them also advises not letting that overtake what can be a practically and emotionally fulfilling experience. “Whatever way you do music, it has to be a way that makes you happy. We had this experience where we realized playing as a band, [that trying] to have fun was actually a better experience than trying to make it super perfect,” Christie says. Sally adds that while they might have had a lot of “musical geniuses,” that’s not common and that bands are not doomed to fail without them. Poh clarifies that being in a band is “just like any challenge in life. It’s not easy in the beginning. You’ve got to work for it. That being said, performing is a very rare thing for you to do in college, and you should cherish that chance.” This act of creating, according to Julian, is a special opportunity, especially for students. “I feel like as university students, what are our entertainment options? I think it’s usually consuming stuff, eating stuff, drinking stuff, going out, partying. And I think that’s a completely different experience than trying to create something that people can enjoy. I think it really gives you a sense of achievement.”

則慶幸晨興還有其他樂 隊,像是一個音樂社群,讓他們玩得更放膽。他認 為全靠書院有這種音樂氛圍,才能促成今晚和日後 的音樂會。當然,晨興書院汪寧笙院長和通識教育 主任何素楠教授的全力支持,亦非常重要。玹瑞記 得有次在何教授主持的音樂會上,被婧珩所唱的一 首原創歌曲感動得熱淚盈眶:「我到今天還會說起這 件事,每次聽到這首歌都會流淚。」
無論是別人,還是自己表演,就是這份感動讓他們 成為晨興音樂社群的一份子。 Poh 說:「為晨興人演 奏的片刻純粹而美好,是無法取代的。」音樂是樂隊 的基礎,但大家都認為,充實的經歷和情感滿足才 是最重要。婧珩說:「無論想怎樣玩音樂,最重要是 快樂。我們的經驗是,與其要演出得毫無瑕疵,倒 不如盡情享受。」玹瑞補充說,雖然樂隊難得有多位 音樂天才,但即使沒有亦不代表會失敗。 Poh 解釋 道,組樂隊就像其他生活難題:「一開始並不容易, 必須全力以赴,要知道在大學表演機會難得,應該 好好珍惜。」偉光認為對於學生來說,創作更有意 義:「大學生的娛樂通常是消遣、吃喝玩樂、參加 派對。我認為能創造出讓人享受的作品,更有成就 感。」

All four of them are obviously giddy about their time in Morningside’s spotlight once more. Although they haven’t played together in such a formal setting in years, music still tinges their friendship. Poh and Christie – when they’re not working as a computer science researcher at CUHK and a trainee solicitor respectively – still play together in a local Hong Kong band called “Good Funk Shui,” whose other members Nate Wong and Jerold Chu will join them at tonight’s concert. Julian has sometimes collaborated with Poh while working as a beatmaker and producer in Taiwan. And while Sally’s work as an investment banker limits the amount of time she can spend on music, she sometimes joins them for a group jam or a late-night music-listening session. As Julian puts it, at Morningside, most people come from different parts of the world. “We know nobody, and we need to establish our social network here. I think reaching out and using music to bond with each other is one of the best ways to achieve that. It’s not just limited to the people in our band. I feel like the whole college, at least the people around us, were also feeling this [momentum]."
Tonight, I understand what he means. As the four of them walk on and off the stage to perform the various numbers they prepared, I look around the Morningside dining hall to find students watching with enthusiasm. Christie emcees as if she is still a part of the music community here – both her singing and speaking voice make you feel like you’ve been friends since your first imaginary class together. Sally blooms under the audience’s full attention that she rightly deserves for her moves, outfit, and performance. Everyone whips out their cameras to take videos of Poh’s sax solos, and Julian’s tracks fill the dining hall with more melodic noise than I thought possible. They pull students on stage, who are bashful at first, but who perform better than I’ve ever seen them, now with the support of professionals who can smooth out their rough edges. Flashlights on phones wave in the background, and it is difficult to imagine a better medium than music to bring together distinguished Morningside members, faculty, staff, and students, past and present.

今晚,我終於明白他的意思了。當他們踏上晨興舞 台時,我環顧宴會廳,發現同學們都全情投入。擔 任主持的婧珩仍像昔日的晨興音樂人,她的聲音猶 如舊友重逢般親切。在觀眾的全神貫注下,玹瑞的 舉手投足、服裝和表演都令人讚歎不已。在 Poh 獨 奏色士風時,大家都拿出手機將精彩表演收錄在 鏡頭下,偉光的口技演出為會場帶來強勁的音樂節 拍。樂隊還邀請同學加入舞台,雖然最初有點害 羞,但在鼓勵下,大家都表現比以往更好。隨著手 機的閃光燈在台下揮動,沒甚麼比音樂更能凝聚晨 興,連繫著書院每一位過去與現在的晨興人。

AMPLIFYING VOICES OF THOSE AT THE MARGINS: MAGOGODI OAMPHELA MAKHENE

放大邊緣族群的聲音︰ Magogodi oaMphela Makhene
South African writer Magogodi oaMphela Makhene was chosen as this year’s One Book Programme author for her careful and dynamic written and humanitarian work. She is a Caine Africa Prize, Hedgebrook, MacDowell and Rona Jaffe Award honoree and co-founder of social enterprise Love As A Kind Of Cure, an organization that works to dismantle white supremacy. Magogodi’s debut collection of short stories, Innards, challenged and shocked first year students last fall when the Morningside community read and celebrated the text together. During her first ever visit to Hong Kong, the Iowa Writers’ Workshop trained author joined Junior Fellows Alayna Lee and Kaitlyn Roukey for a conversation about Innards and her work as a social entrepreneur.
Magogodi has been absorbing stories for as long as she can remember and often identifies her grandmother as the first storyteller in her life. Oral storytelling was central to Magogodi’s childhood, and it continues to influence the way she understands generations past. Although it is delicate work, Magogodi has taken it upon herself to share some of these stories in written form, and in doing so, she is particularly sensitive to her own use of the English language while telling stories. “English is not my first language,” she acknowledged. “It makes me pause as a writer that I write in this language. My ancestors were repressed through this language, and it is still a language of soft conquest.”
Magogodi does see English as an asset and a “gymnastically delicious tool,” though. The language can bend and stretch in ways that show how people have made the language their own. Her work as a social entrepreneur and author uses this idea to transcend cultures and speak to people outside of Black South Africa. Magogodi maintains ownership over the narratives of her ancestors and uses English as a way to share them with the world. She has made it her life’s work to center stories of those who are often at the margins and strives to be a catalyst in creating a future that looks like a place where all people belong.
Embodying Liberation Through Social Entrepreneurship
Amplifying voices and bringing often silenced stories to center stage is a guiding principle of Magogodi’s social enterprise Love As A Kind Of Cure. Magogodi and co-founder Cleyvis Natera conceived of the organization in early 2020 after throwing an energetic postmortal birthday bash for author Toni Morrison in New York City. The event, meant to celebrate Morrison and inspire young readers, proved to be extremely well-received and well-attended. “People were waiting around the corner of Brooklyn Museum before the doors were open,”

由社企來解放

Magogodi remembered. “And this is February in New York City, folks! It’s ugly, and it’s cold like you cannot imagine.” The New York City community’s dedication to this event made it evident that there were people who were hungry for this kind of programming.
Fueled by their creative abilities and desire to continue Morrison’s work, Magogodi and Cleyvis developed a place of connection and conversation at Love As A Kind Of Cure. The beginning stages of their work came at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. They hosted a variety of virtual festivals that attracted phenomenal talent including 23rd Poet Laureate of the United States Joy Harjo and Booker Prize winner Arundhati Roy. The festivals consisted of interactive events and cook-a-longs that allowed participants to connect and be in community with one another.
After nurturing the social enterprise in its beginning stages, the cofounders created a course specifically geared toward white and white identifying women. The course helps those who want to understand how to affect change that is about dismantling white supremacy and being more antiracist. As the instructor of the course, Magogodi is guided by the question: “How do I push [participants] to look at themselves and to look at people who are black and brown through a really honest lens that requires vulnerability and a change in the way they have seen them in the past?” The service opens many opportunities for white people to learn to also lift stories of people who have been oppressed. Teaching more individuals to utilize their own strengths, awareness and empathy to again, center stories of people at the margins, can help create a world where more people choose love and empathy over hate or fear.

Stories Remain
The work of Innards and Love As A Kind of Cure are evidently intertwined in the sense that they both work tirelessly to center love and stories of oppressed peoples. Innards is a collection of twelve intimate short stories of those living under and after apartheid in Soweto, South Africa. Magogodi fictionalizes her own experiences, oral stories told by her family, and events reported in the news to share a variety of perspectives with readers. “The project is really about imagining us being Black South Africans and what our blackness means to us outside of the white gaze,” she explained. “It is deeply a very human work that wants to bring in readers who are outside of our culture by asking them ‘Hey, can you recognize pieces of your humanity in this work that’s so specifically about these Black South Africans?’”
As an ode to Magogodi’s mother’s generation, the story “Black Christmas” unveils the parts of the generation’s upbringing that were kept quiet. The story is told from the perspective of a young girl living and attending school under the Bantu Education Act. Christmas was a complete wash that year as Consumer Boycotts took over the shops and festivities were banned. The girl often steals and reads her uncle’s newspapers only to find reports of terrorist attacks, saboteur operations, and communists burning innocent people of color. The narrator recalls, and the story goes on to show, a time when she herself came upon a brutal burning on her walk home late one night. The girl goes mute after seeing such a vile crime. In considering a generation who lived and grew up with violence and hate around every corner, readers have no choice but to wonder what other stories are shielded from the public eye and remain untold.

“Indians Can’t Fly” is a story that follows main character Krishna, a victim of extreme torture and violation of her body and identity. Krishna’s story alludes to real events and cruelty brought to those who fought against apartheid. It works to bring humanity to news reports that shied away from rightfully acknowledging lost human lives. Antiapartheid activist Ahmed Timol is one example of a person whose name appeared all over the news, but questions remain regarding the end of his life in 1971. Although officially reported to have committed suicide by jumping from a Johannesburg police building window, speculation that his death was premeditated by police remains. Ahmed Timol’s story is not the only one of its kind. Humanizing Ahmed, and many other victims whose death followed a similar narrative, grounds readers and wider audiences; real people endured real brutality, and injustices continue today. Magogodi’s collection keeps these stories at the forefront.
A Challenge of Empathy
During her visit, Magogodi joined first year students for a lecture in GEMC1001 in which she focused on Dilemmas in Writing and Identity. Magogodi chose to discuss the story “The Virus” and led an exercise that pushed Morningsiders to understand those around them in a new way. “The Virus” is a story in which she confronts a character who caused and continues to cause immense harm to Black South Africans. The story is a clear example of how empathy shows up in Magogodi’s work and alters the course of her writing.
The story is set in a post-apartheid state and is narrated by an Afrikaner and veteran of the South African Defense Force who not only benefited from apartheid, but outwardly thought it was right. Being a character who has beliefs that Magogodi herself finds repulsive and whose actions have hurt her, her family and many people around her, she admits “writing this character might be one of the most difficult things I’ve ever done.” Yet, she has chosen to not let his story go untold in a collection that reflects on the living history that is apartheid.

To write such a character, Magogodi first had to identify her own biases and then understand and even have empathy for the narrator. She shared this process and exercise with GEMC1001 students; they were asked to recall a time when they had been hurt by someone else. Privately, everyone in the room wrote the name of a person and the story of a time they were hurt. After writing that person’s name, students were to identify what it would be like if the perpetrator retold the story. Magogodi urged students to write what it is they would want that person to be sensitive to in the retelling. What can’t be forgotten? What kinds of circumstances, feelings, or history must be acknowledged from their point of view? Again, students swiftly got to writing.
Soon enough, the exercise became what Magogodi would describe as “juicy.” “Imagine this person as a baby in your care,” Magogodi instructed. Students laughed and looked around in confusion–how do you imagine an adult, teenager, or even stranger as a baby? Magogodi let them sit in the confusion of shrinking this person down to a human who has only been in the world for a few months; a person who is unable to keep themselves alive without help. “Think of a caretaking activity–feeding, bathing, diaper changing–and write that scene.” Between hesitant giggles, students complied. Nearly ten minutes of writing fueled an honest discussion about the perception of those around us.
By identifying and understanding other peoples’ stories, we can begin to offer peace and love even more willingly to those who have hurt us. Although not every person we interact with or walk past needs to be transformed into a baby, Magogodi challenges our community, and beyond, to offer more love. Choosing empathy can make every individual more aware of the people and stories around them, and in turn make room on stage for those who are silenced.
為了創作這個角色, Magogodi 要先梳理自己的偏 見,還要理解甚至對敘述者產生同理心。她與修讀 GEMC1001 的同學分享了當中的過程,並一起進行 練習。首先,她請同學們回想一次被別人傷害的經 歷,每人都寫下一個名字和受傷的故事。之後,同 學們要想像如果由加害者重新講述這個故事,會是 怎麼一回事。 Magogodi 鼓勵同學寫下希望加害者 在重新講述時要留意的內容,例如有甚麼不能被遺 忘?從他們的角度來看,有哪些事實、感受或歷史 必須承認?同學們於是在她的指導下寫下了各自的 故事。

The community was honored to have Morningside alumnus and award-winning film director of Drifting (2021), Jun Li, as this year’s competition judge.

WHAT IS A MORNINGSIDE JUNIOR FELLOW?
晨興的通識教育導師

I moved to Hong Kong in July 2022, departing the (cherished) Washington DC swamplands in search of more moderate climes. Having landed amidst severe tropical storm Chaba, I resolved not to hope for anything too explicitly. Following a comfortable quarantine, my immediate task was to enter the Morningside Junior Fellow role as a contributor in a four-member General Education (GE) team, and piece together our various responsibilities as the weeks and months rolled by. I knew from prior conversations with incumbent Junior Fellows and guidance from the Dean of Education, Professor Ann Huss, that I would be a teaching assistant for two courses on ethical dilemmas and servicelearning. Beyond this, I understood that the role could accommodate pedagogical research and the development of personal projects within the Morningside community, but I didn’t initially have a keen comprehension of what this entailed. Why were young people flown in from across the planet for this role? What is it we could bring that would enrich students’ learning environment at the college? My colleagues Alayna Lee and Kaitlyn Roukey (Kait) brought rich competences from their experience in undergraduate student organizations and in secondary education respectively, and have been capably proactive and sociable members of this community. 我於 2022 年 7 月離開(心愛的)華盛頓特區,起行移 居到香港,以為會來到一個氣候較宜人的地方,誰 不知當天我隨同猛烈的颱風暹芭一同旋風式抵港, 從此不再抱有這個期望。完成隔離後,我的首要任 務是盡快上任為晨興的通識教育導師,融入一個四 人的通識教育團隊,與大家分工合作起來。由於先 前曾與前任導師溝通,加上通識教育主任何素楠教 授的指導,我早已知悉自己將擔任「當今困境及其 歷史背景」及「服務學習」的助教。除此之外,我還 知道這個職位將負責晨興的教學研究與各自感興趣 的項目。不過,當時我對於通識教育導師的意義只 是一知半解,有甚麼值得年輕人飛越半個地球來擔 任這份工作?我們又可以為同學的書院生活帶來甚 麼?我的同事李采敏和 Kaitlyn Roukey 曾擁有學生組 織和中學教學的經驗,勝任能力無庸置疑,絕對是 晨興之中積極主動、擅長社交的一群。而我卻是屬 於內向的一類,經歷在學界與職場的十年打滾,我 當然能強裝開朗自信,但內心深處,我卻是離群遁

a funk. A decade of academic admissions and job interviews gave me some skills in projecting outward confidence, but internally I saw myself as a bookish and cloistered individual. Looking back on my two years here, I reckon the specialness of this position lies in how Junior Fellows are supported to pursue growth and intellectual development on their own terms and guided towards becoming effective and conscientious teachers.
Morningside’s Junior Fellow program is in its twelfth year. In threemember cohorts, Junior Fellows collaborate with Professor Huss to teach GE courses, plan and accompany service-learning trips, co-organize extracurricular events such as the One Book Programme, and contribute to college publicity. These responsibilities have not been static, as GE programming undergoes frequent review and each team initiates and further develops their contributions to the undergraduate experience. In the current team, Alayna has introduced a college podcast, Kait has helped document Junior Fellow’s contributions and post-Morningside careers, and I am working with students to organize and revitalize the college’s small library.
Over the past year we approached former Junior Fellows for their reflections on experiences here, and to learn about the varying paths they have taken after leaving the position. Kait and I spoke with ten former Junior Fellows, who have each taken distinct paths such as teaching, admissions counselling, consulting, and graduate school. Two frequently repeated points from these conversations stood out to me. Fellows from almost a decade ago still felt a strong commitment to values of pedagogy, service, and critical inquiry they imbibed here, which then recurringly shaped their teaching and commitments to public and student welfare over subsequent careers. Furthermore, a few of them remarked that this remained their favorite position they had ever held, because of the measured and adept guidance, and the empowering freedom they had had to experiment with novel programming and ideas within this intimate community.
Teaching
Teaching is the central pillar of the role. Maytal Mark (2017-19) recalled how teaching at Morningside sharpened her clarity of expression, and adaptability in teaching students with differing international backgrounds, English proficiencies, or comfort in discussing abstract ethical concepts. Maytal’s Junior Fellow team conceived of their role as “one big group project” and they cooperated while navigating differing workstyles and pedagogical priorities. Maytal’s contemporary, Madison Reid, enjoyed seeing Morningsiders build confidence and articulate their life goals. Madison is now a college admissions director at a Hangzhou-based international school. Drawing on past virtue ethics discussions at Morningside, she integrates character education into her counselling work. She prompts students to think about what makes a community and society work, and seeks that they are kind, caring, and motivated to give back to their communities.
Nora Britton (2014-16) teaches English Language Arts to high schoolers at the Academy of American Studies in Queens, New York. As Junior Fellows, she and Nathan Faber (2015-17) discussed Rabindranath Tagore’s conception of a multicultural education that empowers

晨興的「通識教育導師計劃」已踏入第 12 年,它採 用三人團隊的架構,通識教育導師負責與何素楠教 授合作授課、規劃和陪同學生展開服務學習之旅、 一起籌劃「一本書計劃」等課外活動,並協助書院進 行推廣宣傳等。但這些職責亦經常轉變,因為通識 活動會不時檢討,每個團隊都希望為學生引入新體 驗,所以活動亦不斷發展。在現時的團隊中,采敏 就曾推出一個書院播客, Kait 則協助記錄導師的貢 獻和他們離開晨興後的事業發展,而我就與學生一 起活化書院的小型圖書館。
在過去一年,我們接觸了多位前任的通識教育導 師,了解他們在晨興的經歷,他們離職後的事業發 展令我們深受啟發。 Kait 與我訪問了十位導師,他 們都選擇了不同的發展方向,例如教學、升學輔 導、專業顧問和研究院進修。與他們的訪談中,有 兩點讓我印象非常深刻。首先,儘管離開了近十 年,這些導師仍然抱持在晨興學到的教育理念、服 務精神和批判性思考,而這些價值觀奠定了他們日 後對教學的熱誠,以至對社會與學生福祉的擔帶。 有些受訪者認為,晨興通識教育導師依然是他們最 喜歡的工作,因為既能獲得系統性的指導,同時擁 有在書院這個小社群天馬行空的自由。
教學
教學是通識教育導師的主要職責。麥美彤(2017-19) 認為在晨興任教提升了她的表達能力,讓她有信心 教導不同背景與英語水平的學生,討論抽象倫理概 念時亦更從容。當年美彤的團隊視他們的職責為 「一份大型團體項目」,彼此之間要就工作方式與教 學重點找到默契。與美彤同期的麥雲昕很喜歡看到 晨興人能夠建立自信和清晰表達自己的人生目標。 雲昕現為杭州一間國際學校的招生主管。承傳過去 於晨興討論道德倫理的傳統,她也將品格教育融入 她的顧問工作中。她經常讓學生反思,真正推動社 會運作的到底是甚麼,鼓勵他們忠於自己的善良, 積極回饋社群。
貝娜拉( 2014-16 )現於紐約皇后區的美國研究學院 教授高中生英語語言藝術。擔任晨興通識教育導師 的時候,她曾與林亦琛(2015-17)討論英屬印度哲學 家羅賓德拉納特 泰戈爾的多元文化教育概念:多 元文化教育的參與者能夠定義和塑造自己的周遭環 境。基於這個理念,娜拉毅然鼓勵皇后區的學生透 過詩作或圖像,描繪出他們所重視的社區空間,之

participants to define and shape spaces around them. Drawing on this for her teaching, she encourages her students in Queens to represent local spaces important to them, through creative work such as poetry or pictures. Nora shares these representations with partner schools, elevating students’ works to positions where they influence others’ understanding and treatment of their communities.
Yifu Dong (2019-21) took up the Junior Fellow torch for two years when the functioning of the college and our societies was constrained. He worked hard to create a sense of community online, often through accordion performances, and spent the pandemic years being a resourceful, sympathetic, and supportive figure for his students. He contributed to students’ growth through extensive individual guidance in academic writing. Combined with his efforts at nurturing community, this earned students’ appreciation; many of them still visit him in Boston today, where he is studying law.
Service
Morningside’s service-learning casts a critical eye towards how NGOs define effectiveness and construe communities’ capabilities and needs. Junior Fellows guide students’ analytical approach to service organizations, usually in Hong Kong or on service-learning trips. Julia Hobbs (2013-15) highlighted the humility impressed upon Junior Fellows, who relocate to a new city and as teachers, continue learning from and sharing ideas with their students. When arranging the earliest service-learning trips, Junior Fellows put students in similar positions of engaging with different societies and communities. Nathan recalled how his colleague Pauline Day created the unique Morocco service-learning trip by cooperating with contacts she had within the country. The trip’s first iteration challenged students’ ideas of service-learning, as they were not providing a service such as teaching English or distributing

後更將這些學生創作向其他學校分享,讓學生對其 他人如何看待社區空間產生影響力。
董一夫(2019-21)於書院與社會的艱難時期,接過了 通識教育導師的火棒。在任職兩年間,他經常透過 網上表演手風琴來營造對書院的歸屬感,並在疫情 期間為學生帶來充滿愛心的鼓勵與支持,成為學生 心中的親切導師。除了為學生提供學術寫作上的個 人指導,他亦積極推動學生成長,加上對書院的付 出,深得學生的敬愛,至今仍然有不少學生到波士 頓探望他。
服務
晨興的服務學習課程倡以客觀批判的角度,審視服 務機構如何釐定效益和掌握社會的實際需求,而通 識教育導師會在進行服務學習課程時,指導學生對 服務機構進行分析。 Julia Hobbs( 2013-15 )認為, 導師謙遜好學的一面,令她尤其深刻。即使到了另 一個城市任教,他們仍然會繼續向學生學習,樂於 分享自己想法。事實上,籌劃早期的服務學習旅程 時,導師會盡量將學生置於與當地社區能對等的位 置。另一位導師亦琛回想起同事 Pauline Day 當年 如何接洽她在摩洛哥的聯絡人,令充滿特色的摩洛 哥之旅得以成行。這次旅程亦令學生反思了對服務 學習認知,因為學生不是負責去教授英語或分派物 Nathan Faber, Rashon Clark, Pauline Day 林亦琛、柯駱祥、Pauline Day

necessities, thus not establishing any hierarchy between provider and recipient. Instead, they spent time with Moroccan teenagers, mutually sharing opinions, ideas, and experiences and forming a connection. This helped students empathetically conceptualize the local communities’ lives, unique ideas of self-fulfillment, and aspirations. When leading a later Morocco trip, Maytal visited Marrakesh’s old Jewish Quarter and a historic synagogue. This kindled her interest in such Jewish communities, leading to her current PhD research on Jewish history in the Middle East. Madison’s current students sometimes struggle with US college application prompts about diversity; service-learning trips shaped some of her thinking on this. She accompanied Morningsiders to Fujian to assist in redoing rural Tulou houses and was initially skeptical of whether a mostly Mandarin-speaking cohort would gain from this experience in China. However, the trip’s remoteness and the distinctiveness of the rural dialect was an eye-opener for these students, demonstrating China’s internal diversity. Now, she frequently advises her high schoolers to explore Hangzhou and meet people outside their international school bubble.
Nicole Wong (2018-19) played a key role in developing local service opportunities for Morningsiders. When advising students writing about their service-learning trips, she sought to constructively challenge passages that insinuated trip visits were to ‘undeveloped’ communities in need of unilateral upliftment. She encouraged more nuance in students’ portrayals of communities in need and sought to change the disconnect students felt from subaltern perspectives when they employed an ‘us’ and ‘them’ framework so steeped in capitalist ideas that it obstructed solidarity with those they were serving. Challenging students’ particularistic ideas of Hong Kong as a supposed free-market haven alienated from the Global South, Nicole pioneered the college’s Hong Kong Service-Learning Program, to help students understand local inequalities intertwined with their own Hong Kong identity.

雲昕現時有不少學生對美國大學入學申請中關於多 元種族的題目感到困惑,服務學習的經歷卻改變了 她對這方面的想法。她曾陪同晨興學生前往福建協 助重建鄉村土樓,由於不少學生本身能操普通話, 令她懷疑這次體驗能否為學生帶來新啟發。結果, 由於這座土樓位置非常偏遠,加上獨特的鄉村方 言,展現出中國內地幅員廣大的多樣性,令學生們 大開眼界。她現在經常鼓勵自己的高中學生遊走杭 州,結識國際學校圈外的人。
黃嘉敏(2018-19
)在為晨興人發掘本地服務機會的任 務上,扮演很重要的角色。當學生撰寫服務學習課 程報告時,如字裡行間表露出認為探訪是要幫助「不 發達」的社區,她會提出有建設性的反問,鼓勵學生 對有需要的社區作出更詳細的描述,並試圖改變學 生使用「我們」和「他們」的框架,避免與底層視角 脫節,因為這種框架浸透了資本主義的思想,足以 阻礙與所服務的人交流。嘉敏開創了書院的香港服 務學習計劃,不少學生認為香港是一個與「全球南 方」截然不同的自由市場,她卻鼓勵學生反思這個觀 念,讓他們以香港人的身份了解本地的不平等現象。

Living in Hong Kong made Julia Hobbs appreciate the limitations in serving communities in need as a language-constrained foreigner, but also more alert to the potentialities of affecting positive social change. Today, she is engaged in her “dream project” in Chicago, a pro bono consulting role advising community organizations in implementing the mayor’s initiatives to increase community safety and decrease violent crime. Julia has drawn on past Morningside classroom discussions about intentional, carefully considered service that is self-aware about its lasting impacts and insinuations. Within Nathan’s experiences in public service (such as consulting for the US Commission for Civil Rights), he credits Morningside with instilling a sense of individual importance, accountability, and embeddedness within society, and the realization that individuals with any kind of professional or academic training can find ways of harnessing their capabilities towards societal service. Per Julia, this focus on service and societal benefit makes Morningside important within a contemporary culture that prizes grades and personal achievement.
Projects
Maytal’s biggest contribution to the college may have been her introduction of the One Book Programme in its inaugural 2018 session with author Suki Kim. Maytal experienced a similar program as a student at Northwestern University, and believed it was a good fit for Morningside. Students could read a common text that would direct their attention to another part of the world; it was designed as an exercise in empathy and contemplating other cultures and political contexts. It was Maytal’s first ever experience of seeing an idea of her own come to fruition on such a large scale, and students were very eager to meet Kim and learn about her firsthand experiences in North Korea. Fond memories of this event inspire her to introduce literature and poetry in her current classrooms. The One Book Program continues today, most recently with Magogodi Makhene’s visit in October 2023.

生活在香港, Julia 明白到言語不通的外國人從事社 區服務雖然有一定局限,但仍能為社會帶來正面的 轉變。透過晨興的課堂討論, Julia 明白到若有明確 目標和周詳考慮,社會服務的影響力和感染力必定 更深遠。她現於芝加哥從事無償的「夢想工作」,為 社區組織提供建議,以配合當地改善社區治安和減 少暴力罪案的措施。亦琛回想他服務社會的經歷(例 如為美國民權委員會提供顧問服務)時,亦稱讚晨興 重視培養個人重要性、責任感和融入社會的意識, 讓大家明白到任何專業或背景的個人,都可以憑藉 自己的力量回饋社會。
Julia 更相信,晨興崇尚服務 社會和關注公眾利益,在現今重視成績和個人成就 的世代中,顯得更加重要。
項目
美彤對書院最大的貢獻是引入「一本書計劃」,促成 了計劃中首位作家金淑姬於 2018 年之到訪。美彤 在美國西北大學就讀時曾參與過類似活動,她認為 非常適合晨興。學生只需閱讀一本書,即可將眼光 投放到世界的另一端,認識其他政治文化背景,從 而培養出同理心。這是美彤首次將自己的建議大規 模地付諸實行,當年的學生亦非常渴望與金淑姬會 面,了解她在北韓的所見所聞。這次活動的美好回 憶,鼓勵美彤繼續在現時的教學工作中介紹文學和 詩作,而「一本書計劃」至今仍然是晨興的年度活 動,最近一次是南非作家 Magogodi Makhene 於 2023 年 10 月來訪。
李慧姿( 2020-22 )因為很喜歡之前在晨興擔任的導 師工作,所以現成為一位招生顧問。為了解晨興 人的背景,讓他們投入書院這個小社群,她努力發 掘學生的有趣才能,希望他們在黯淡沉悶的疫情期 間亦能享受到精彩的大學生活。她於是利用自己在 博物館策展的經驗,籌劃了一個名為「超越自拍: 對當下的探究」的學生藝術作品展覽。活動共展出 了八名學生的照片、繪畫、數碼藝術品和鉤針編織 作品,回應 2021 年「一本書計劃」年度讀物作者米 拉 塞西著的作品《你喜歡嗎?》的理念,展示出 有關自我與當代的想像,而學生的作品則以獨特的 城市景觀、疫情的孤獨、尋找自我、執著、甜點和 小狗,描繪出這些主題。有慧姿對學生的鼓勵與支 持,難怪學生登入最後一次 Zoom 會議時,背景標 題都是「We <3 Juliet the Benevolent」。

understand Morningsiders’ backgrounds and immersion in their new college community, she learnt about students’ interesting talents and wanted them to feel celebrated during the bleak pandemic years. To this end, she drew on her training in museum curation and organized Not Just a Selfie: Inquiries of the Present, an exhibition featuring students’ art. Eight students contributed photographs, paintings, digital artwork, and crochetwork. Drawing on the 2021 ‘One Book’ Are you Enjoying? by Mira Sethi, the themes were selfhood and contemporaneity. Students’ interpretations of these themes depicted distinctive cityscapes, pandemic loneliness, finding the self, fixation, desserts, and puppies. Recognizing Juliet’s commitment to their well-being and flourishing, Juliet’s tutorial students logged into their final Zoom session with a background caption: “We <3 Juliet the Benevolent”.
Nora met the journalist Robert Fisk when she was a highschooler and retained a deep respect for his moral compass and the historical awareness he brought to his reporting. As a Junior Fellow, she was able to invite him to Morningside to give lectures on journalism, Arab nationalism, and ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. She wrote about his visit in this magazine’s 2016 edition, lauding his passion for presenting personal subjectivity and emotional and ethical responses to oppression in his writing. His seriousness about how his writing shaped public opinion and state policy towards the Middle East appears to have influenced Nora’s zeal for helping students perceive their own value as interpreters and ethical interlocutors of their societies.
Over the last two years, my colleague Alayna has realized her own goal of hosting a podcast, publishing ‘Hong Kong’s Morningside’, a series relating the many stories that make this college special. She has interviewed past and present leaders of the college, students, illustrious alumni, and ‘One Book’ authors. In collaboration with the GE Team, I have spent both my years here discussing, modifying, and teaching GE courses, guiding students through service-learning trips in England and Morocco, and realizing annual editions of the One Book Programme, Morningside Photography competition, and the College Magazine, all amidst getting familiar with Hong Kong as a new home. Sometimes we pare ourselves down to meet institutional standards of presentation, but I was guided in retaining wonky inclinations and being a clearer communicator and attentive teacher. Past Junior Fellows’ testimonies demonstrate the fellowship’s support for individual interests and strengths, and I can say without hesitation that coming to Morningside was a very fortuitous choice.

娜拉在高中時認識了記者 Robert Fisk ,並對他重 視道德倫理與歷史背景的報導深感敬佩。擔任導師 時,娜拉曾邀請 Robert Fisk 到晨興主講有關新聞採 訪、阿拉伯民族主義和中東持續衝突的講座。她並 曾在本雜誌 2016 年版刊登過他的訪問,讚揚他在報 導中所展現的個人主體性,以及面對壓迫與道德議 題所展現的熱誠。他對寫作如何影響公眾輿論和中 東國家政策嚴肅認真,亦感染到娜拉決心幫助學生 認識自己作為社會傳譯者和道德對話者的價值。
在過去兩年,我的同事采敏實現了她成為播客主持 的目標,推出《聲匯晨興》系列節目,介紹了這所 書院與眾不同的故事。她曾採訪書院過去與現在的 風雲人物、學生、傑出校友和「一本書計劃」的作 者。而我則花了兩年時間與通識團隊合作,一起討 論、修訂和教授通識課程,指導學生展開英格蘭和 摩洛哥的服務學習之旅,籌劃每年一度的「一本書 計劃」、晨興攝影比賽和書院雜誌,漸漸熟悉香港 這個家。有時我們會為了達到某些制度要求而隱藏 自己,但書院教導我保持與眾不同的一面,成為表 達得更清晰、更細心主動的導師。從歷屆通識導師 的分享,我們可以看到晨興對個人興趣與發展的支 持,我可以毫不猶豫地說,來到晨興是一個非常偶 然而美好的選擇。

Staying Connected
Over the course of the year, Morningside alumni gathered to celebrate recent accomplishments and reminisce on their time as undergraduate scholars. A variety of events created spaces for building professional networks and connections within the growing alumni community.
Morningside College Deputy Master Professor Anthony So and Associate Master Professor Ann Huss hosted the first Alumni Reunion Event in Beijing last summer. The alumni enjoyed reuniting with friends and learning about new developments at the College.
In the fall, Adriel Chan, Chairman of Hang Lung Group and the College’ s Committee of Overseers, hosted more than 70 guests for MC+ Drinks. The event, held at Soho House in Sheung Wan, provided a unique opportunity for alumni from a range of graduating classes and industries to join in an evening full of camaraderie, laughter, and meaningful connections.
To finish out the year, CUHK Alumni Homecoming Day brought nearly 60 alumni back to the College in December. Alumni and their guests connected with the Morningside Alumni Association to play games at central campus, and later joined College Master Nick Rawlins for a homecoming dinner at the College for the first time since 2018.

晨興書院副院長蘇文藻教授與協理院長何素楠教授 於去年夏季在北京主持首屆校友聚會活動,校友們 對於能夠與故人重聚並了解書院的新發展感到相當 雀躍。
秋季,恆隆集團董事長兼晨興書院院監會主席陳文 博先生主持了校友聯誼活動「MC+ Drinks」,吸引共 70 多位來賓參加。活動於上環 Soho House 舉行, 這次活動創造了一個聯誼好機會,讓來自不同學系 學屆、從事各行各業的校友和嘉賓共聚,成為大家 的美好回憶。
去年底,將近 60 位晨興校友於中大校友日重返校 園。晨興書院校友會在中大校園舉辦攤位遊戲,透 過遊戲將校友及賓客連繫起來。活動當晚,一眾校 友來賓與晨興書院院長汪寧笙教授一同參加院長晚 宴,是自 2018 年以來的第一次!

Giving Back
Two alumni made generous donations to the college recently. The first, who has asked to remain anonymous, helped bridge the final funding gap for The James A. Mirrlees Postgraduate Scholarship Fund. In a note to the College, the former science student wrote that “It was only with the College’s trust and support that we could freely experiment and build something special together, so thank you for making this fantastic journey possible for all of us.”
The second donor, Geng Yunfan (Computer Science, 2020), will fund an annual exchange scholarship. Geng works as a Software Engineer at Meta in the United States. While at CUHK, he received an exchange scholarship from the College to pursue studies at McGill University. The experience inspired him to pursue a postgraduate degree and a career in North America. Geng noted that “…it is Morningside College and the exchange programme that led me to the life I live now, so why not give back?” The Yunfan Exchange Scholarship is established to encourage students to embark on their own exchange journey and to maintain an optimistic and positive spirit even in challenging circumstances.
回饋書院
近日,書院獲得兩位校友的慷慨捐款。第一位要求 匿名的校友捐助支持「莫理斯研究生獎學金基金」, 填補了基金的缺口。這位理科生還附上了感言:「多 得書院的信任和支持,我們才能自由地去實驗創 新,一起建立出一些特別的東西,所以很感謝書院 讓我們所有人都能夠實現奇妙的旅程。」
第二位捐款校友耿雲帆(計算機科學, 2020 )出資資 助年度交流計劃獎學金。耿校友現於美國的 Meta 擔任軟件工程師。在中大期間,他亦曾獲得書院的 獎學金資助前往加拿大麥基爾大學交流,這段經歷 更啟發他後來到北美攻讀研究生和工作。耿校友表 示:「全靠晨興書院和交流計劃讓我能夠擁有現在的 生活,為甚麼不回饋呢?」「雲帆海外交流獎學金」 的成立,正是為了鼓勵學生踏上交流之旅,即使面 對困難重重的挑戰,仍然保持樂觀積極的精神。
