Morningside College at The Chinese University of Hong Kong was established in 2006 with generous donations from the Morningside Foundation and Morningside Education Foundation Limited for the purpose of accommodating 300 students on a fully residential and communal dining basis.
The Morningside College Master’s Report is published annually and is circulated to all members of the University and College communities. General correspondence concerning the Report should be sent to the College Office, Morningside College, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shatin, New Territories, Hong Kong, or by e-mail to morningside@cuhk.edu.hk.
We finally did it! This last year has been the first twelve-month period since my arrival that has actually gone according to plan. It’s not as though nothing dramatic happened: Supertyphoon Saola narrowly missed Hong Kong at the beginning of September 2023 but left us relatively unscathed. The record-breaking Black Rainstorm that followed a week later, demonstrated that our waterproofing needed urgent maintenance work sooner rather than later, but the immediate consequences were soon mopped up and renovating has now given us the chance to Go Solar.
So rather than writing about our extraordinary ability to cope with major challenges I can finally write about what, in normal times, one might call normal life at Morningside: the kinds of topics I would have expected to cover when first I arrived. And although startling accounts of damage control offer a chance for a College Master to write something along the lines of an adventure story, periods of calm set the scene for a deeper creativity and more lasting attainments. The year has focused on many of the kinds of things that we badly missed over the last few years: finally, we have managed to enjoy a whole year’s
ration. I shall touch on just a few themes, to help set the scene.
Surely no-one who was there will forget the wonderful Music Night performance by four Morningside Alumni, accompanied by their band members and some current students, which brought several of our Overseers and guests to a buffet dinner in a Hall filled with enthusiastic (and well-fed) Morningsiders. That is going to be a hard act to follow. I’ll leave it to our current student musicians to take up the baton.
We can once again bring our alumni together in other ways, too. In November, Adriel Chan generously hosted a greatly appreciated reception for the wider Morningside community. The first Alumni Dinner that had been held for years followed not long after, at which I was able to meet some of the students whose time here helped to create the Morningside College that we enjoy today. This summer our new Alumni Association Committee took over and arranged their first reception, and outlined a seriously packed future calendar. Beyond Hong Kong, the College took the lead in hosting alumni dinners in Shanghai and Beijing, reconnecting not only across distance
We are still a young college, but as Morningside’s Alumni make their way through their worlds, I can feel their appreciation for their College, and watch as their support for their successors grows.
but also across time. And, beyond these organized events, our alumni find their individual routes for connecting. Some look in on us if they’re back in Hong Kong. Others update us from wherever they may now be. They offer support enabling the students of today to enjoy the experiences that had once opened their own eyes and changed their own possible futures. There are always stories to hear – threads running from early days here to a present that might once have been quite unimaginable: the essence of what makes educating so deeply rewarding. We are still a young college, but as Morningside’s Alumni make their way through their worlds, I can feel their appreciation for their College, and watch as their support for their successors grows. That has real impact. Thank you all.
We have other visitors once again, as well. The Nobel Laureate, James Heckmann and his wife came to Morningside to see where his fellow Laureate Sir James Mirrlees had been the Founding Master. I have had the pleasure of welcoming Baroness Amos, the Master of University College, Oxford; Douglas Chalmers, the Master of Emmanuel College, Cambridge; and Dr Michael Collins, the Chancellor of UMass Chan Medical School, who was accompanied by Dr Gerald Chan and spent some all-too-short hours talking to Morningside medical students. I had almost forgotten how delightful the Old Normal is!
Read on, and you will discover that our GE programme is once again operating across its former spectrum of activities. We had managed to restart our Overseas Service Learning trips last year; this year we were able to add a memorable visit in person by the 2023 One Book Programme’s featured author, Magogodi Makhene. That was another series of events that will stay in the mind.
And how are our own students doing? The short answer is, very well. It’s another strong Master’s List, with 65 names on it. And there was recognition beyond the College itself for Eric Wang (Psychology and Linguistics) and Silas Wong (Computer Science) who received the 2023 Vice Chancellor’s Scholarship for Excellence, while two of our leavers, Yu Kejing and Choi Ching Lam, are due to take up graduate places at MIT. Our students are indeed flourishing.
Morningside students are also leading in a quite different domain: the Morningside College Student Union is re-formed,
legally registered, and is now seen as offering a template that other college SUs are using as a model so that they can do the same. I am really proud of our student union leaders – they’re simultaneously highly international and highly effective, and a credit to the College. It’s a pleasure to be working with them.
We have marked the annual intake of newcomers and the departure of our graduates with Formal Hall dinners, at which it’s wonderful to see families and give them a sight of the College which will be – or has been – a key part of their children’s lives for four years. I thank them all for joining in, and supporting, and celebrating what we do here. And I specially want to highlight and acknowledge something new: the way in which Morningside Parents are now contributing to College funds that will enable other children to take up the opportunities that their own children had enjoyed. Generosity and kindness that reaches both across generations and across families is truly special: I am profoundly grateful to those of you who have led the way, and I am touched by your thoughtfulness.
The comings and goings may be most obvious in the yearly flows of students, but they are just as significant across the rest of the College, too. We have welcomed Professor Prasanna Karhade and Professor Nishant Shah as new Fellows, and Dr Tim Rosenkranz, Dr Nikki Lee and Mr William Fong as our new Members. We have said farewell to Professor Erik Fung, Professor Sam Chan and Mr Laurie Pearcey, as well as Ms Sammi Huang and Dr Diana Han. Among our Junior Fellows, Alok Ranpise and Alayna Lee left us after having given us two, much appreciated years and Serag Heiba and Rin Tsavalyuk have taken up their posts, maintaining Morningside’s proud international tradition.
Finally, I want to thank our other benefactors and our Overseers, chaired by Adriel Chan who took over the role from his uncle, Gerald, last year and succeeded his father, Ronnie as Chairman of Hang Lung Properties earlier this year. I am constantly astonished by their generosity in terms both of time and material resources. The College simply could not do what it does – let alone plan for what it aspires to – without their constant input and attention. How such busy people manage to find the space in their lives to be here for us when we ask is a mystery that I don’t expect to solve. All I can say is that working with them is one of the generally unsung pleasures of being Master of Morningside. So let me sing their praises here.

THE COLLEGE 書院簡介
During his address to the graduates in November 2023, JUSTIN CHOW reminded us how lucky we are to be members of such a diverse college community. This year alone, students from more than 50 major fields and 30 nations/territories shared weekly communal dinners, battled it out across the ping pong table, performed on stage, and studied together in a variety of quiet corners throughout the college. They were supported by a team of caring and committed Resident Tutors who worked closely with the Warden, Professor ANN HUSS, and the Dean of Students, Professor COLIN GRAHAM, to encourage student autonomy while also ensuring student wellbeing.
College Fellows continued to contribute in a variety of ways, mentoring students, serving on college committees, and sharing their research and publications during lunchtime talks. Professor DOU QI introduced Fellows and students to the power of artificial intelligence in healthcare. DOU argued that the cost-effective availability of A.I.-based medical tools could ameliorate shortages of physicians around the world and address clinical challenges such as surgical imprecision
or medical errors owing to clinicians’ individual training and experience. Professor SASKIA WITTEBORN discussed the multiyear project that culminated in the publication of her book Unruly Speech: Displacement and the Politics of Transgression (Stanford, 2023). The ethnographic study explores how Uyghurs in the diaspora transgress sociopolitical limits with a variety of communication practices in a quest for change.
During the University’s 60th Anniversary banquet in December, a plan was hatched to bring an illustrious group of alumni musicians back to campus for a spring performance. Communal Dinner on 12 March was therefore unlike any other. Joined by professional keyboardist, composer and producer JEROLD CHU and drummer NATE WONG of the “Nowhere Boys”, SALLY CHOI (2022), CHRISTIE LEUNG (2022), POH WONGKHAM (2021) and JULIAN YEN (2022) treated the College and guests to an energizing concert. More about how they met can be found in the June 2024 edition of the MORNINGSIDE MAGAZINE. We hope they will come again!
At Morningside College, I had the chance to live and learn with classmates from different countries majoring in different subjects. Since then, working and studying in the hospital where the people and things I encounter have become increasingly specialized, each time I think about the time I spent here, my fondness for this place grows. Encountering an environment as open and inclusive as Morningside was a once in a lifetime opportunity.
Justin Chow (MBChB), Graduation Address, November 2023
WITTEBORN 教授則分享了她已從事多年的研究項目,並最 終出版了《 Unruly Speech: Displacement and the Politics of Transgression》(斯坦福大學,2023 年)一書。這項有關民族 誌的研究,探討了移居海外的維吾爾人在尋求改變的旅途 上,如何借助各種通訊方法來突破社會政治上的掣肘。
College Fellows interviewed over 290 applicants in 2023. 68 students joined the Morningside community. Local Hong Kong intake increased to 43% while mainland intake decreased from 22% to 18%. International intake remained stable at 39%.
Differences were noted in student intake by Faculty when compared to 2022 intake statistics: Engineering and Social Science intake decreased by 8% and 6% respectively, while Medicine, Science and Interdisciplinary intake all increased by 3%. Art, Business Administration and Law intake remained stable.
The College maintained its commitment to ensuring that all students have access to the various opportunities that the College and the University provide. Over HK$2.67m in Scholarships and Financial Aid were awarded to deserving Morningsiders this year.
Countries/Regions of origin include: Azerbaijan, Brazil, India, Indonesia, Japan, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Russia, South Africa, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand and Viet Nam.

STUDENT LIFE 書院生活
Morningside College’s Student Union, led by President ISHMAM-UL HAQUE (Information Engineering) through February 2024, represented students on College Committees and advocated on their behalf. In March, students elected a new Executive Council, with CHLOE CHUNG (Cell & Molecular Biology) as the Student Union President. Chloe and her cabinet immediately got to work organizing Photo Day activities and a variety of programmes for the upcoming fall semester.
Ishmam and his cabinet deserve our gratitude for bringing multiple plans to fruition this year. Not only do students now enjoy an upgraded fitness room, but throughout the academic year, the entire community delighted in a variety of fun activities that have quickly become new traditions at Morningside: the annual BBQ, Mid Autumn Festival, Morningside Cultural Fair, the college Halloween celebration, and for the first time ever, a Lunar New Year poon choi banquet on the patio. Thank you, Ishmam and team!
Following Wine Tasting and Sustainable Chocolate Making workshops in the spring and several MC Rangers-inspired hikes and beach outings, the Morningside Music Community
bid farewell to its stalwart leader JAMES JEON (Energy & Environmental Engineering) during the final Music Night of the year. We are all grateful to James for keeping music alive at Morningside.
The annual photography competition was judged this year by film director, screenwriter and Morningside alumnus JUN LI. Themes were Impermanence, Imitation, and Shape. The Grand Prize was awarded to LIU ZHIYUAN of New Asia College for his photograph “Introspection”. Other winners included students from Chung Chi, Morningside, and Wu Yee Sun College. As usual, submissions by Morningside students will be showcased in the 2025 Morningside College Calendar.
ISLAM ZHANDALIYEV (Laws) and SUYASHA NARASIPURAM (Medicine) received Spirit Awards in recognition of their hard work, energy and commitment to the College. LILIAN WONG (Data Science & Policy Studies) and NANDINI DULANI (Medicine) received Achievement Awards. Service Awards are detailed on page 16.
I am very thankful for the two GEMC courses. They’re courses…that I only took because it was a must, but if I were to go back in time with what I now know…and was given an option, I would take them willingly. I believe without this sense of a multinational community with vibrant cultures or liberal courses like GEMC that challenge our preconceptions, our university would’ve merely become somewhat like a vocational school and our college just a dormitory.”
Thiha Kaung Sett (Professional Accountancy), Graduation Address, November 2023
Two College General Education courses were offered as usual in 2023-2024. Both courses are supervised by the Dean of General Education, ANN HUSS. Tutorial instruction was provided by Morningside’s Junior Fellows ALAYNA LEE, ALOK RANPISE and KAITLYN ROUKEY. We are grateful to College Fellows LOWELL LING, SASKIA WITTEBORN, TAN YEN JOE, ANTHONY SO, COLIN GRAHAM and One Book Programme author MAGOGODI MAKHENE for contributing guest lectures to the Current Dilemmas course.
This year’s David Parker General Education Best Essay Prize was awarded to ARJUN CHADDHA (Science) for his GEMC1001 essay exploring the ethical issues surrounding the use of the gene editing tool, CRISPR. PROFESSOR SCOTT AUBREY, who adjudicated the competition, commented that the “paper goes beyond just providing a general opinion…and proposes a specific mechanism to ensure ethical practices.”
The Peer Mentoring Programme (PMP) wrapped up another successful term in November 2023 with seven mentors
and twenty mentees. Delivered by SHARON WONG of the Independent Learning Centre, the PMP prepares senior students to provide guidance and support to incoming firstyear students.
Students also ventured off campus with the Junior Fellows to enjoy film screenings at the Hong Kong International Film Festival and performances at the 52nd Hong Kong Arts Festival (HKAF). HKAF events included the dance performance “Losing It”, Amy Ng’s adaptation of August Strindberg’s Swedish play about class and power, “Miss Julie”, and the Baltic Sea Philharmonic’s “Bright and Black” performance.
EXCHANGE
With global travel and exchange programmes back in full swing, 21 Morningsiders spent one or two semesters on exchange during the 2023-2024 academic year on four continents. Meanwhile, the College welcomed 26 incoming exchange students from 10 countries.
I no longer think that ‘service’ is just volunteering for a few days at a random place and feeling better for what you have been doing. It’s really about the mindset, your intentions, how you view your role, the people you are helping, and whether you can stay determined despite knowing that you might not be able to help everyone suffering. It's so much more complicated now that I’ve been on this trip.
Elfany Lui (Sociology), 2024 Greece Programme participant
Over the past year, more than 40 Morningside students completed service learning projects as part of the College’s General Education program. This amounts to roughly 1700 hours of service work, primarily in Hong Kong. The students’ volunteering services contributed to a variety of Hong Kong sectors. Some of these included alleviating food insecurity and poverty, informing migrant domestic helpers about their legal rights and accessible mental health resources, supporting schools for SEN students, increasing access to individual afterschool tutoring, and providing much-needed manpower support at animal shelters.
The College led three service-learning trips over the summer. In coordination with Learn With Dragonfly, 16 students travelled to Yangshuo, China in late May. The group assisted local social organization The Loving Heart in their work to improve the lives of people with disabilities in the region.
In early June, 12 Morningside students participated in the College’s service trip to Rabat, Morocco. The trip was structured around visiting NGOs and social enterprises to learn about community needs and how the organizations operate. Visits in both Rabat and Marrakech focused on access to sexual health education, women’s legal and political equality, inclusive workspaces for women with disabilities, and empowering girls to pursue higher education.
For Morningside’s final service trip, 12 students travelled to Greece in June. They visited six different NGOs related to displaced peoples and the refugee crisis, enthusiastically engaging with each NGO by asking questions about the organizations’ strategies related to employment training, educational and psychosocial support, social welfare, healthcare, and legal representation and guidance for asylum applicants.
STELLA CHEN (IBBA), GOVINI ELVITIGALA (Chemistry), and EMILY TANG (Social Work) received Morningside College Service Awards for the 2023-24 academic year. Stella Chen worked as a volunteer copy writer in the Hong Kong Jockey Club’s Look For Green Mobile Recycling Programme. Govini volunteered in event logistics during the Hong Kong Gay Games, used their Sinhalese language skills to support Sri Lankan domestic workers through the NGO HELP, and coordinated goods recycling and redistribution at Crossroads. Emily has worked in various projects around Hong Kong contributing to mental health support for the public.
New Physical Education Lecturer Mr WILLIAM FONG joined the Morningside community in August 2023, working together with the current Physical Education Lecturer Dr SALLY SUN to inject new energy into Morningside's athletic development. Morningside students formed various sports teams this year, including badminton, basketball, rowing, soccer, swimming, table tennis, tennis, and volleyball.
The College also organized a few Fun Days in collaboration with CW Chu College, featuring activities such as Yoga, Muay Thai, and Stick Mobility this year. The Fun Days were popular among the students, especially the newly introduced Stick Mobility activity.

FINANCE 財務狀況
INCOME
While interest and investment return remained static, the overall income rose by 5% from $15.9m to $16.8m. The increase of $0.9m came from recurrent income: a rise of 8% in Government subvention and 6% in donations & matching grants in 2023-24. A donation from an alumnus to the James A. Mirrlees Postgraduate Scholarship and continued support from the Morningside Foundation contributed to the growth.
Expenditure rose by 7.8% over the past year, from $14.8m to $16m. The $1.2m increase was due to a post-pandemic reactivation of exchange programmes, student activities, and college functions, as well as a surge in operational expenses due to inflation.
The College’s primary objective when managing capital remains the same as in years past: to safeguard the College’s ability to continue as a going concern and to maintain a strong financial base to support the development of the College. To this end, the College invested in financial instruments which include funds held by the University that are managed in accordance with relevant financial management policies and practices.
There was a slight growth of $3m in the endowed funds and $2.3m in the operating reserve, an increase of 2.4% and 14.7% respectively. With income of $16.8m and expenditure of $16m, the total funds increased from $141m to $147m, representing a net increase of $5.2m (or 3.7%).

THE IMMEDIATE FUTURE
The College’s ability to weather the storms of recent years is testimony to the resilience and unity of our community. As we move forward, our focus will be on three key areas: reactivating paused activities, fundraising, and alumni engagement. The College will continue its efforts to expand the resources necessary to support financial aid and student pursuits. At the same time, the College will adopt a prudent approach to operational expenditure to allow for increased flexibility in the current unpredictable economic environment.
The College is bound by The Chinese University of Hong Kong Ordinance (“the Ordinance”), Statutes, and Council resolutions.
The College is governed by the Constitution of Morningside College (“the Constitution”), approved by the Council on 16 November 2010.
The Ordinance prevails in the event of any inconsistency with the provisions of the Constitution.
THE COMMITTEE
The Committee of Overseers, annually,
(1) before the beginning of each academic year, endorses the proposed budget of the College for the academic year, and submits it to the Council for approval;
(2) after the end of each academic year, prepares and submits to the Council the audited accounts of the College, in such form and at such times as the Council may determine.
