Welcome to the 23rd edition of the Morinville Community Guide. As part of Town Council’s commitment to serving and informing the public, this guide is published three times a year: Spring/Summer (April to August), Fall (September to December), and Winter (January to March). This publication is a comprehensive guide offering many diverse programs and services from Community Services and local organizations. The Community Guide is an invaluable resource for everyone in Morinville and the surrounding region, so be sure to take a few minutes to read through it. Growing together and enhancing the quality of life in our community is important. We encourage all of you to try something new by participating in our health and wellness classes, recreation programs, sport development, selfimprovement classes, arts and culture workshops and community festivals being offered in the coming months. There is something available for every age — preschool, youth, adult and senior — so be sure to find what is right for you! For an up to date listing of “What’s Happening” in our town, please visit our website at www.morinville.ca. Thank you to all the generous groups and businesses that support the development of the Community Guide, and the programs and services contained within. Your support is truly appreciated by all those who benefit from community programs and services. Sincerely, Mayor Lisa Holmes

• Garbage collection will continue either Tuesday or Wednesday depending on your area throughout the winter. • Garbage and recycling collection will remain on its regular days over the Christmas period. • Christmas tree collection will begin on Wednesday, December 28, 2016. Please be sure to remove all tinsel and decorations before leaving your tree(s) by the curb.

• Please pay attention to snow removal signs in your neighbourhood and have vehicles removed from the street. • Check “Snow Route, No Parking” signs and obey them during specified hours. • Review the Snow Policy on the Town of Morinville website. • Snow removal on main streets begins at 5 a.m. Snow removal in residential areas will not begin before 7 a.m. • All sidewalks must be cleared within 72 hours of a snowfall as per Bylaw 24/2012.

Enforcement Services in Our Community

Be aware of falling temperatures and wind chill when your pet is outdoors. If your pet is an outdoor pet, ensure they have a shelter with dry bedding. It is also important to make sure your pet(s) are quick to identify if lost during the winter months. Take the necessary steps to ensure they are licensed, and micro-chipped or tattooed.

Bylaw Reminders Snow Removal

Keep your sidewalks clear of snow, ice, dirt or debris to ensure everyone’s safety. Sidewalks need to be cleard down to the bare cement within 72 hours. If you will be away from your residence during the winter, please make necessary arrangement to ensure snow removal is taken care of on your sidewalk.

Off-Highway Vehicles

The use of off-highway vehicles (which includes snowmobiles) is PROHIBITED in Morinville corporate limits.

Winter Safety Reminder

Plan now — keep a winter travel kit in your vehicle.

Fire Prevention Tips

Smoke Alarms

Change the batteries yearly, and make sure to test your alarm every month.

Carbon Monoxide Detector

Very important to have installed in your home, as is yearly maintenance and inspection of heating systems and appliances.

Overloading of Extension Cords

Extension cords are a common cause of electrical fires. Only use extension cords that are rated for the power used by the device they are powering.

Dryer Fires

Lack of maintenance is the number one cause of dryer fires. That is why it is critical to clean the lint filter before and after each use, and wipe away any lint that has accumulated around the drum.

Fireplace Safety

Most chimney fires occur with wood-burning fireplaces. Ensure chimneys are cleaned and professionally inspected regularly. Burn only small quantities of wood at a time.

Morinville Youth Basketball Association

Adopt-a-Driveway is a volunteer service program where individuals, families, and other groups commit to removing snow from the driveways and sidewalks of Morinville residents who are unable to perform this task for themselves. Volunteers are matched with a resident, and are also welcome to adopt more than one driveway. After the match, volunteers work with the residents to clear the snow from their home.
