Welcome to the 24th edition of the Morinville Community Guide. As part of Town Council’s commitment to serving and informing the public, this guide is published three times a year: Spring/Summer (April to August), Fall (September to December), and Winter (January to March). This publication is a comprehensive guide offering many diverse programs and services from Community Services and local organizations. The Community Guide is an invaluable resource for everyone in Morinville and the surrounding region, so be sure to take a few minutes to read through it. Growing together and enhancing the quality of life in our community is important. We encourage all of you to try something new by participating in our health and wellness classes, recreation programs, sport development, selfimprovement classes, arts and culture workshops and community festivals being offered in the coming months. There is something available for every age — preschool, youth, adult and senior — so be sure to find what is right for you! For an up to date listing of “What’s Happening” in our town, please visit our website at www.morinville.ca. Thank you to all the generous groups and businesses that support the development of the Community Guide, and the programs and services contained within. Your support is truly appreciated by all those who benefit from community programs and services.

Fire Safety Tips

Fire Pits

Fire pits need to be handled with caution, especially since they are often used in social settings where it is easy to neglect taking care of the flames. • Keep the fire pit at least 10 feet from any structure or flammable items. • Place the unit on a solid surface, in an open area, away from overhanging trees or rooflines. • Never start or re-start your fire with gas or other flammable liquids. • Burn only clean fuel such as dry, untreated wood and keep the flame below the mesh screen. • Never leave the fire pit unattended. • Always ensure small children are closely supervised around any active campfire, fire pit or barbecue. • Keep a fire extinguisher close at hand and ensure any embers are completely extinguished before going inside.

Fire Escape Planning

A fire can spread rapidly through your home. A small fire can erupt into a “flashover” (when a room gets so hot, everything suddenly bursts into flames), within as little as three minutes. Seconds count in a fire emergency and an advanced warning from smoke alarms and an effective home fire escape plan could save your life: • Have at least one smoke alarm on every level of your home and test the alarms monthly. For best protection, use interconnected alarms so when one sounds, they all sound. • Identify two exits from which to escape, from each room (especially bedrooms). • Draw a simple floor plan of your home, marking exactly how to get out in a fire and practice your escape plan at least twice a year with everyone living in your home. • If bedroom windows are high above the ground, consider getting fire ladders and practice how to use them. • Assign a designated helper for any person living in your home who may require assistance in escaping the fire emergency (young children, people with impairments, older people) & teach children how to escape on their own. Knowing what to do in the event of a fire is particularly important for older adults and there are things to consider for the elderly living alone in their home. • Consider sleeping in a room on the ground floor to make escaping easier. • Make sure smoke alarms are installed near any sleeping area and consider installing smoke alarms that use a flashing light, vibration and/or higher decibel sound to alert you in a fire emergency. Choose smoke alarms equipped with large test buttons, or ones that can be tested using a flashlight or television remote. • Make sure you are able to open up all doors and windows in your home. • Keep a telephone and emergency phone numbers near your bed, as well as other necessary items such as medications, glasses, wheel chair, walker or cane, flashlight and whistle.

Celebrating Our Local Volunteers

Join us in recognizing, appreciating and thanking volunteers of all ages who contribute to our community in a variety of ways. Morinville Volunteers has developed into a program providing the volunteers and organizations with the resources they need to continue successfully volunteering within the community and to support their volunteers the best way — within their own organizations. Removing individual awards and recognizing Morinville Volunteers is an essential part of celebrating our community volunteers.

Organization $150 Volunteer Grants

Each organization within Morinville can apply for up to $150 per organization funding that contributes to the further development and celebration of their own volunteers. This grant will be available April 3 with a submission deadline of April 28, and can be used throughout the 2017 year on volunteers within their organization.

Volunteer Workshops

Both workshops are presented by Heather Nicol of Alberta Culture and TourismCommunity Development and held at the Morinville Community Cultural Centre. Pre-registration is required as there are limited spaces available. April 24 April 27

When People and Expectations Collide | 6:30 - 9 p.m. Show Me the Money | 6:30 - 9 p.m.

Volunteers in Action Display

Morinville truly showcases some of the most committed volunteers and community driven organizations. Help us showcase the Volunteers in Action by providing pictures of your volunteers from your organization involved in your programs, events, and meetings. Send your pictures and write-up to mdziwenka@morinville.ca We will display these pictures throughout Volunteer Week of April 23-28 in the Morinville Community Cultural Centre Foyer. Come by and view all of the activity our volunteers create in a year.
