E.B. WILLIAMS '27

A native of Edgefield, South Carolina, Dr. Edward Buchanan Williams, affectionately known as E.B., joined the Morehouse College faculty in 1937. He served the College for nearly 40 years as a professor of Economics, serving as chair of the Department of Business and Economics for 24 years. Dr. Williams retired in June 1976.

Under his visionary leadership, Business and Economics became the largest department at Morehouse and produced more MBAs, Ph.D.s, and business leaders than any other department at a historically Black college or university in the United States.

A seasoned scholar, Dr. Williams earned a B.A. from Morehouse College, an M.A. from Atlanta University, and a Ph.D. from Columbia University. In recognition of his academic excellence, he was inducted into the prestigious Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society.

A passionate and principled educator, Dr. Williams encouraged students to pursue both academic distinction and vocational competence. His influence extended far beyond the classroom. His eloquence, wisdom, and mentorship inspired countless students to aim higher and achieve more.

In recognition of his extraordinary service to Morehouse and its mission, Dr. Williams received the Bennie Service Award at the 3rd Annual A Candle in the Dark Gala. He was a model of integrity as a husband, father, educator, and scholar.

Dr. E.B. Williams passed away on October 24, 1996. His legacy lives on through the Division of Business and Economics and the generations of Morehouse men he inspired.

47TH ANNUAL E.B. WILLIAMS HONORS BANQUET

THE ANNUAL E.B. WILLIAMS HONORS BANQUET

In April of every year, the faculty, staff, and students of the Division of Business and Economics come together with the business community for the annual E.B. Williams Honors Banquet.

Established in 1979, the honors program serves two purposes:

• To recognize and honor students for outstanding academic achievement

• To introduce these students to the corporate community

Each year over 200 juniors and seniors within the Division of Business and Economics are honored.

This event is named in honor of Dr. E.B. Williams, the longest-tenured leader of Business and Economics at Morehouse, a Phi Beta Kappa scholar, and the third African American to earn a Ph.D. in Economics at Columbia University. Dr. William's leadership and focus on academic achievement positioned Business and Economics to realize tremendous growth and the national recognition it now holds.

THE E.B. WILLIAMS AWARD

In recognition of Dr. E.B. Williams’ exemplary leadership and enduring legacy, the Division of Business and Economics established its highest student honor in his name. The E.B. Williams Award is presented annually to the graduating senior in the Division with the highest grade point average.

A MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN

April 24, 2025

Dear Esteemed Guests,

On behalf of the Division of Business and Economics at Morehouse College, it is my distinct honor to welcome you to this year’s E.B. Williams Honors Banquet.

This cherished annual tradition serves not only to celebrate the academic excellence, determination, and leadership of our outstanding students but also to recognize the generous contributions of our scholarship donors, employer partners, and supporters. Your unwavering investment in our mission makes an indelible difference in the lives of our students, and for that, we are profoundly grateful.

Tonight, we proudly acknowledge the remarkable students whose hard work and academic distinction have earned them well-deserved honors. Their achievements are a testament to their perseverance and ambition—and to the empowering environment that your support helps make possible.

We also pay tribute to the legacy of Dr. Edward Buchanan Williams, a visionary leader and former chair of the Division, whose name this banquet so proudly bears. Dr. Williams embodied the values of integrity, scholarship, and principled leadership—values that continue to guide our students and our work.

As you enjoy the evening’s celebration, know that your presence and continued support serve as powerful affirmations of our shared commitment to excellence, equity, and opportunity. Together, we are preparing the next generation of global business leaders—bold thinkers who will shape a more just and prosperous future.

Thank you once again for your enduring generosity and partnership. Congratulations to our exceptional students. May tonight inspire all of us to keep striving, keep supporting, and keep believing in the transformative power of education.

Warm regards,

A MESSAGE FROM CAREERS

April 24, 2025

Greetings E.B. Williams Honors Banquet – Students, Faculty, Staff and Guests:

I am proud and honored to be among many to add my heartfelt congratulations to the Men of Morehouse who are being honored tonight for academic excellence in the Division of Business and Economics. This evening commemorates the 47th celebration recognizing scholastic achievement in the Division.

In these times of financial global unrest and political uncertainty we are inspired by the unwavering dedication, intellect, and commitment to excellence of these young men.

The support we continually receive from those of you in the corporate community plays an incredibly important role in our ability to support our students’ experiential interests.

The first Honors Banquet program, held in the spring of 1979, honored forty students and tonight’s program will honor and recognize over 200 students. The growth of this program in both quality and quantity is self-evident.

Tonight is one occasion in our students’ lives that they will be recognized for academic and professional achievement. We have no doubt that many more will follow.

Sincerely,

gl C p

IN MEMORIAM

WILLIS BRASWELL SHEFTALL, JR. '64

A native of Macon, Georgia, Dr. Willis B. “Butch” Sheftall, Jr. ’69 made enduring contributions to Morehouse College and the Division of Business and Economics over a remarkable career. He entered Morehouse at age 16, earned his B.A. in 1964, and pursued graduate studies at the Sorbonne, Atlanta University, and Georgia State University. A Navy veteran and respected economist, his academic interests spanned higher education economics, public finance, and U.S. economic history.

Initially hired by Dr. James Hefner, Dr. Sheftall left briefly to serve as Dean of Business at Hampton Institute (now Hampton University), returning to Morehouse in 1986 as the fifth chair of Business and Economics. Under his leadership, the department achieved AACSB accreditation in 1997, making it one of the first business programs at a historically Black college to earn the distinction.

In 1998, he was appointed Provost of Morehouse, a role he held for eight years and again in 2012. He also served briefly as Acting President in 2013, retiring later that year after 36 years on the faculty.

A passionate scholar and mentor, Dr. Sheftall embraced the “organized chaos” of classroom dialogue and deeply valued the exchange of ideas. He was a beloved teacher and administrator, trusted colleague, and loyal friend.

Dr. Sheftall passed away on November 4, 2024. He is survived by his wife, Willenor, and his brother, Michael ’69.

DEAR OLD MOREHOUSE

Dear old Morehouse, dear old Morehouse, We have pledged our lives to thee; And we'll ever, yea forever Give ourselves in loyalty.

True forever, true forever, To old Morehouse may we be; So to bind each son the other Into ties more brotherly.

Holy Spirit, Holy Spirit, Make us steadfast, honest, true, To old Morehouse, and her ideals, And in all things that we do.
