MEDICAL EXAMINER
confidential state pathology lab + medical examiner facility
This State jurisdiction (confidential) required a new pathology lab and medical examiner facility to replace the existing, outdated building. The new 18,000SF, 2-story building will include a BSL-3 autopsy suite for cases requiring isolation. The design prioritizes environmental sustainability by incorporating renewable energy and energy efficient strategies to reduce overall emissions. The project is currently in design.

CONSOLIDATED LABRATORY
confidential centralized lab planning
E4H is working with a confidential healthcare system to perform a feasibility study and conceptual design to investigate the operational design and facility validation for the consolidation of Clinical & Anatomic Pathology Labs. The intent of this project is to centralize all necessary clinical and pathology laboratory testing of each health system hospital lab into one future location to create a more efficient process for lab functions, reduce cost test, and to free up real estate within the existing hospital’s facilities.
E4H is performing
• Lean Operational Design Services
• Facility Validation
• Evidence Based Design Review
• Support of Conceptual Estimating & Preliminary Schedule
The function of this program will leverage digitization and automation in a high tech facility and the end result will be to create enough capacity to support a broader test menu of lab services.

Serving more than 250 outreach sites, The Pathology Department processes approximately 35,000 surgical specimens, over 36,000 cytopathology specimens, and performs over 16 million clinical tests and 200 autopsies annually. Part of the master plan strategy included the consolidation and co-location of the Genetic and Molecular Pathology Division, which is currently scattered across several buildings. The 5th floor of the new facility will be dedicated to this division, which includes all major DNA-based testing.
The design is based on a flexible open-lab module that can accommodate a variety of diagnostic testing work cells, including those based on very large instruments, and also allows future modifications to be made easily. To reduce the risk of contamination, the lab includes a large pre-PCR suite with an anteroom leading to a variety of positive pressure specimen prep/ extraction rooms and PCR hood rooms, allowing prep work to be separated according to type (bacterial, viral, general).
The lab workflow is planned around a specimen delivery/receipt hub that is vertically connected with other lab floors via dumbwaiters and pneumatic tubes. Offices and support spaces are located adjacent to the labs with areas of visual connection using glass walls.

MEDICAL LABRATORY inova central laboratory
E4H provided project design, budgeting and contract administration services for a 22,000SF interior fit-out in an existing medical office building for a new state of the art medical laboratory. The project required complete removal and replacement of existing building mechanical, plumbing and electrical systems including a 100% backup generator system. The layout of the laboratory is based on LEAN principals and is setup for optimum flexibility over time. The 1st floor laboratory is outfitted with cutting edge automated analyzers and a BSL-3 lab. The 2nd floor laboratory is for histology and pathology as well as administrative functions. A new dumbwaiter was installed to transport specimens from the 1st floor receiving/ accessioning area to the 2nd floor lab. A new outpatient blood draw center was also included in the new fit-out.

ENABLING A VISION
regeneron tarrytown campus expansion
Tarrytown, NY
E4H is the Laboratory and Vivarium Planner for the Tarrytown Campus Expansion for Regeneron. The campus expansion includes over 1.5 Million GSF of new research, development and process space, including the new Loop Road campus, which includes three new laboratory research buildings, a new vivarium building, four new office buildings and a new central utility plant. The entire complex is connected through a below grade plinth with parking for over 2,500 cars. The below grade parking is covered with two landscaped quads that tie the campus amenities together along the Main Street. The research floors are connected with a “people collider” designed to foster collaboration.

E4H is emerging as a leader in the planning and design of facilities for Cryo-Electron Microscopy. This requires strict tolerances including but not limited to the sensitivity to room temperatures, heat dissipation, magnetic fields, acoustic and floor vibration, structural support, and room
The Harvard Cryo-Electron Microscopy Center for Structural Biology is a joint effort by Harvard Medical School, DanaFarber Cancer Institute, Boston Children’s Hospital, and Massachusetts General Hospital to provide state-of-the-art cryo-EM instrumentation and expertise for the Harvard structural biology community. This user facility offers consultation and training by staff in specimen preparation, microscope operation, image acquisition, and data analysis. The facility houses two Titan Krios election microscopes and one Talos Arctica electron microscope, all equipped with Gatan K3 Summit direct electron detectors.
MEMORIAL SLOAN KETTERING CANCER CENTER
This Titan Krios G2 TEM System required a full review of the building’s existing MEP and Structural infrastructure. New radiant cooling panels, a dedicated UPS, and tieins with the existing building chilled water were added. Additionally, as the room is located above an active parking garage, extensive structural support was added to support the new EM and provide the vibration isolation necessary.
Biogen is one of the first pharmaceutical companies to install a Cryo-Electron Microscope. E4H is in the design

MOON SHOT memorial sloan-kettering cancer center epigenetics lab
The Rockefeller Research Laboratories building is home to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center’s cell biology, developmental biology, molecular biology, molecular pharmacology, and hospital research programs. E4H has worked with MSKCC on a multi-year phased renovation of several departments since 2015. Projects include an 80,600SF renovation of the 4th floor for a new epigenetics program; a 15,600SF renovation of the 13th floor to support ongoing chemistry, biology, and proteomics research; and the renovation of corridors, existing offices, and conference spaces on floors 2-10.
This project involved the renovation of the 13th floor of the Rockefeller Research Laboratory building to create new chemistry, biology, proteomics labs to support 4 Principal Investigators. The 15,600SF project includes a Mass Spectrometer with NMR situated in the center of the floor plan, with wet and dry labs situated around the perimeter. The project also includes chemical storage, staff support rooms, and administrative space. A new roof-top air handling unit was constructed to support the Mass Spec equipment.

TRANSLATIONAL SCIENCE
dana farber cancer institute
dana 14 laboratory renovation
This project is the renovation of 15,000SF of existing laboratory and office space located on Dana Farber’s Boston Campus. The multi-phased renovation of the entire floor will bring the space up to DFCI current laboratory standards. E4H led the programming and design process for nine individual Principal Investigators (PI) being relocated to the floor. This process required significant understanding of all the equipment being proposed for the floor to ensure redundancies were eliminated. The consolidation of equipment and functions allowed for more laboratory and support spaces.
