S A E P P R

WELCOME Welcome to our wonderful season of events at the More Music base, and across the district. With inspiration and artists from the North of England to the Nordics (Nordic Countries), this is music that brings a breath of fresh air and lights up the dark days.

SEP19— APR20

We have an amazing children’s music residency Cinclus Cinclus featuring Norwegian jazz star Terje Isungset to set the tone. Northern women will be sharing compelling folk song with Siobhan Wilson, with featured artist Rowan Rheingans and the thrilling She Shanties collective. There’s plenty of illumination in the autumn and winter months, with the ever popular Lantern Festival and a special outing of family show Magic Islands in Space for Light Up Lancaster. There are numerous opportunities to take part – singing workshops, music sessions, debate and conferences, gigs and activities whatever your age. So wrap up warm, (find your inner Moomin) and join in! Loz Kaye – Artistic Director

GIGS Siobhan Wilson Plus support Nino’s Blue Saloon Following the critical success of her 2017 album There Are No Saints, Edinburgh songwriter Siobhan Wilson is ready to share her new album The Departure. Shortlisted for Scottish Album of the Year, Siobhan’s music explores the concept of making your own choices about identity – specifically when it comes to young women. Whilst her previous work has tilted towards various shades of folk, neo-classical and experimental songwriting, The Departure signals towards something fiercer. “smooth, controlled and yet passionate voice; personal, touching lyrics; and swoonsome, jazz-inflected melodies in abundance.” Vic Galloway, BBC Radio Scotland

Adventurous new writing meets the warmth of a folk gig in this heartfelt and personal one woman show, uniquely weaving immersive storytelling with live fiddle, banjo and genre-melding original songs.

GIGS She Shanties Plus support Paddy Garrigan and The Stroller Priests To say that the She Shanties stand out as an all-female shanty group is to state the obvious, but their northern accents also stand out in a genre dominated by a certain Cornish shanty group. She Shanties, singing accompanied, have an unembellished and clean sound. Their less dramatic approach lets the lyrics stand centre stage and their subjects feel accessible. The songs are nurtured and emotionally loaded. sheshanties.com “Absolutely awesome record, been singing it for days.” Tom Robinson (BBC6 Music) on ‘Sea Monsters’ by Paddy Garrigan and The Stroller Priests strollerpriests.com

GIGS Deep Cabaret Album Launch

At the beginning of 2019 Deep Cabaret were awarded Arts Council England funding to record an album at Real World studios with producer Justin Adams (Tinawarien, Lo’Jo).

WHEN

Deep Cabaret is the culmination of bandleader Steve Lewis’ life’s work: to make a band that curates all the musics that fascinate him - jazz, improv, African, folk and leftfield pop. To use that music to set fragments of text taken from novels, journalism, spiritual and other texts that have interesting things to say about being human.

doors 7pm

Deep Cabaret is a thing of riffs and drones, hurdies, bagpipes, bass clarinets, cellos and the beguilingly unsettling harmonics of overtone singing. Desert blues improv and noir-drenched dronesongs; fulsomely romantic and coruscatingly edgy. Mashed-up lyrics lifted from neuroscience, slavery, fiction and Cole Porter covers all “pickled in the juices of the peat”. “As the sun set, Deep Cabaret shared a spellbinding mix of sounds, many inspired by the stories and landscapes of Morecambe Bay. It was a delight to hear such an intriguing mix of instruments and astonishing vocals” Morecambe Bay Partnership
