The heart of downtown Moose Jaw will showcase chrome and character this month, as the Little Chicago Show and Shine returns for its fourth annual event on Saturday, Sept. 13. Running from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the show will feature hundreds of classic and specialty vehicles lined along Main Street North, live music from local performers, and plenty of opportunities to take in the city’s historic downtown atmosphere. “The Little Chicago Show and Shine is in its fourth year. Last year we had 519 cars, making it the second largest car show in Saskatchewan,” said Alex Carleton, chair of the Downtown Moose Jaw Association (DMJA) that organizes the event. Carleton said the show is already shaping up well, with more than 400 vehicles registered around two weeks ahead of the event. While the final count will depend on the weather, organizers expect to match or surpass last year’s turnout. “With two weeks to go, we’re on pace with where we were last year,” he said. “Whether we end up with a few more or a few less (entries), I’m sure it’s going to be a fantastic show.” In addition to classic hot rods and chrome, live entertainment is a returning staple of the event. “We’ll have seven musicians playing throughout the downtown area. We’ve got some great music and some fantastic cars. Between that, the restaurants, and the retailers, it’ll make for a great day,” Carleton
added. What makes the ever-growing event unique, he said, is the backdrop of Moose Jaw’s “fantastic downtown” venue. “When you fill it up with a bunch of classic cars … (the downtown) has a great feel to it.” The show and shine draws participants from across the Prairies, with some coming in from as far as Manitoba and Alberta. Carleton said there’s no single type of vehicle that defines the event — everything from muscle
cars to cruisers to rat rods has its place. “Everyone comes together with a passion for vehicles. What you love may be completely different from somebody else’s passion, but … when you bring it all together, it makes for a special day with a lot of like-minded people,” he said. For the DMJA, the event also serves a bigger purpose beyond the show’s obvious highlights. “Our mandate is beautification and (promoting) economic activity in our downtown,” Carleton said. “This event has not only brought hundreds of people to our city, but it has brought thousands of people downtown, and it has become a little bit of a fundraiser for our Downtown Association.” From Carly Jaye’s latest downtown mural welcoming visitors to the city, to events such as the Greek Night and programs like “Helping Hands,” the DMJA continues to invest in the heart of Moose Jaw. The Little Chicago Show and Shine is one of its signature efforts, and Carleton said he’s looking forward to welcoming everyone for another packed day. “Everyone can come, enjoy themselves, and have a fantastic day. It’s kind of a win-win in every way,” he said. Registrations are being accepted until either the start of the show or until spaces run out, with Carleton advising applicants to sign up as soon as possible.
