What is it like to be a student at Moor End Academy?
STAKEHOLDER FEEDBACK
Be the BEST - become the LEADERS of tomorrow!
At Moor End Academy, we are committed to delivering an outstanding education to all our students so we can say, with confidence, “we gave every student his or her GCSE passport to success”.
As the Executive Principal of three academies, I’m passionate about the belief that all individuals need to feel valued and encouraged and I have a deep-seated belief that all children deserve an excellent education regardless of what school they attend. I firmly believe that positive relationships and a culture of mutual respect should be at the core of what we do every day, along with high quality teaching and pastoral care.
Our ambition will always focus on providing a school environment with a strong ethos, and a culture of high expectations to create a stimulating, ambitious and caring environment to enable our students to thrive and achieve their full potential. To me, it’s essential that all members of our school community put in the time and energy to bring our vision to life. It’s important that everyone who steps through our doors - staff, students and parents - are excited to be here and understand that everything we do is underpinned by our three core values of ‘Respect,Ambition and Responsibility’.
Kash Rafiq Executive PrincipalMoor End Academy is a very special place to learn and to work, and it’s a school that we are all incredibly proud of. Our core values of respect, ambition, and responsibility underpin everything that we do; this means that students at Moor End are supported and encouraged to realise their full potential - and go on to achieve amazing things as the leaders of tomorrow.
You’ll feel our strong culture and ethos from the moment you enter the building, and our ‘World Class’ vision is evident in classrooms, on corridors, and during social times. It is our relentless drive to continue to ‘be the best’ which ensures our students are able to learn in a calm and purposeful environment, with highly-skilled staff who are passionate about providing them with their ‘passport to success’.
Our students leave us not only well-qualified, but also fully-equipped to become responsible, respectful, and active citizens; this means Moor End students are able to play an active role in society, and understand their rights and responsibilities within this. A wide range of enriching experiences enhances our core curriculum, and students at Moor End engage with all aspects of school life.
We hope that this prospectus gives you an insight into our exceptional ‘World Class’ and high performing academy and we look forward to supporting your child to reach their full potential.
Mrs Natasha Carman PrincipalOur vision is simply to maximise every child’s potential to ensure we can say, with confidence, “we gave every student their passport to success”.
We passionately believe that, as educators, we have the power and responsibility to inspire our students to be the best they can be - to enable our learners to pursue their dreams, and become the leaders of tomorrow.
We are committed to:
1. Providing a safe, caring and stimulating learning environment that is at the heart of the local community;
2. Developing successful, resilient and ambitious students who contribute fully to the academy and the wider community;
3. Inspiring confident young people with an aspirational attitude to ‘be the best and to become the leaders of tomorrow’;
4. Celebrating the principles of high achievement, respect and the inclusion of all students;
5. Providing a rich and deep curriculum to prepare students to participate in a fast paced, challenging and demanding world.
Our Mission Statement:
“Be the BESTBecome the LEADERS of tomorrow!”
Our core values Respect; Ambition; Responsibility underpin everything we do on a daily basis and are designed to drive clear expectations, and to support our vision, shaping and reflecting the culture and ethos we foster.
The aim of our three core values is to explicitly and implicitly help all of our community to operate together cohesively, rooting themselves in the culture and values of our school. It is important that our community understands them, articulates them, and incorporates them into everything they do, to be the best they can be in everyday situations to enable our academy to excel as a world class centre of educational excellence.
We are well behaved and considerate to all staff and students in our learning community.
We are hard working and have an ambitious attitude to succeed and achieve.
We take ownership and act with integrity; we always do the right thing.
We insist on high standards of behaviour, appearance, work ethic and respect from all. This is to enable our staff to teach our students exceptional lessons, so they learn to the best of their ability and leave the academy with a first-class education.
Our philosophy at Moor End Academy is clear: we want to teach our students well, so that they make exceptional progress and go out into the world with the confidence and skillset to become productive and successful citizens. All our students live by our academy ethos of, ‘Be the Best: Become the Leaders of Tomorrow’. This is underpinned by our core values of Respect, Ambition and Responsibility.
When it comes to discipline, we have a traditional approach based upon a very clear set of consequences for unacceptable behaviour. We firmly believe that exceptional behaviour in the classroom is essential for outstanding learning and teaching to take place.
Attendance at Moor End Academy is something we are very passionate about, and we expect all students to meet the academy minimum target of 97%+
It is a proven fact that young people who attend school regularly have better outcomes and the best possible start in life. Those with poor attendance are more likely to fall behind and be unsuccessful.
We have high expectations for attendance from our students, therefore robust monitoring systems are in place to ensure each child works towards the academy target. Those who achieve positive attendance on a regular basis are consistently recognised and rewarded during our assemblies, and have privileges to celebrate their consistent attendance.
Wearing the Moor End uniform with pride is an expectation, and reflects our core values. Students are asked to follow the uniform rules closely and present themselves as they would do in the world of work. Academy uniform develops a sense of loyalty to our community and we always encourage students to take ownership for their appearance and how they present themselves as the aspiring leaders of tomorrow. Students are expected to wear full academy uniform on the way to and from the academy, and to understand that they represent the academy whilst in uniform.
At MEA we know that our students thrive on praise and recognition. Central to the philosophy of our Positive Discipline Policy, is the promotion of high expectations with consistent and specific encouragement from teachers. We encourage all our staff to praise and ‘catch students being good’. We believe that praise and encouragement are far more motivational than sanctions and punishment, and praise should far outweigh sanctions in any classroom.
Students will be consistently recognised for their positive actions, both in and out of lessons through our rewards system;
• Praise Stamps: regular recognition of positive action from students will occur in every lesson and, whenever possible, outside of lessons.
• Student of the week postcards: weekly recognition for outstanding progress made in lesson or around the academy/ community.
• Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum certificates: awarded when students have collected a certain level of stamps.
• Celebration assemblies each term to acknowledge both individual and team success.
We pride ourselves on the excellence of our pastoral care to ensure our young people feel safe, happy, supported and cared for, which enables the development of their character, wellbeing and potential.
Pivotal to the Pastoral Care Programme is the important role of the Head of Year and Form Tutor, who have daily contact with our students and parent/carers, and are able to: help with the pupils’ personal daily organisation; deal with any concerns quickly and effectively; and monitor planners, school uniform, behaviour, attendance and academic progress.
The dedicated Form Tutors also meet pupils each morning and follow a planned programme of Personal, Social, and Health Education (PSHE). As part of this, pupils are encouraged to express their thoughts and feelings on a wide range of topical issues such as democracy, British values, social justice and human rights. We also aim to build skills in literacy and numeracy. Form time is an additional opportunity to check students’ physical and emotional well-being through discussions.
Moor End Academy is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all our students. We have dedicated staff who all share this commitment and ensure the ethos of “safeguarding everybody, everyday” is embedded throughout the academy. Further to this, the academy has a dedicated safeguarding team who support students with any worries or concerns they may have.
The academy has clear policies and procedures in place for safeguarding our students in accordance with local authority and statutory guidance. We work closely with partner agencies such as children’s social care, local health providers, police and others who all share our commitment in safeguarding children.
MEA is a truly inclusive school which welcomes students of all abilities and we recognise all our SEND students as individuals, each with their own strengths and challenges. We are passionate about providing the support needed to help our students overcome barriers to their learning by making simple adaptations to lessons, activities or providing additional resources to assist learning to enable us to best support our SEND students to achieve their full potential at MEA.
Moor End Academy also hosts the Additionally Resourced Provision for visual impairment within Kirklees for students with a severe or profound visual impairment. The academy has twelve permanent and two transitional places for secondary students with a severe visual impairment (we are currently oversubscribed). In addition, the provision provides specialist outreach support to around 80 secondary aged students who have a visual impairment in their local mainstream school.
As with all students who have SEND, they receive a creative, varied, yet balanced curriculum which is differentiated to meet individual needs so that they can learn and make progress. A small number of students with more complex needs and an Education Health and Care Plan follow the Achieve pathway receiving a primary focussed curriculum that is acutely matched to their individual needs. For further information about how MEA’s SEND offer supports the wider offer within Kirklees and for information about SEND in Kirklees please visit the Kirklees Local Offer webpage https://www.kirkleeslocaloffer.org.uk/
MEA students receive a high-quality learning and teaching experience which has enabled them to leave the academy at the end of Year 11 with excellent GCSE outcomes. All our lessons follow a ‘5 phase lesson structure’ to ensure our students benefit from excellent teaching which develops independence, creativity, innovation and risk taking in order to deepen the knowledge, understanding and skills our students need to achieve their personal best.
We encourage our students’ autonomy and explore ideas through a range of challenging activities and tasks designed to move learning forward at a fast pace which leads to high levels of student engagement, determination and enthusiasm.
Every lesson builds towards our phase 4 ‘RED ZONE’ strategy. The main purpose of this challenging lesson aspect is to encourage our students to be reflective and imaginative and to experience exam-like conditions in every lesson, working independently to build resilience as well as improving their written stamina.
We strongly believe in offering a broad, balanced, rich and inclusive curriculum which caters for all our students’ needs. This provides them with the key knowledge and skills to achieve their full potential. Our ambitious curriculum develops independent, articulate and engaged learners who are highly motivated and fosters a love for learning, reflecting our core values of respect, ambition and responsibility.
At Moor End Academy we place the child at the centre of what we do, and it’s our intention to offer a highly ambitious curriculum which is coherently planned and carefully sequenced for all our students to develop the powerful knowledge, skills and cultural capital they need to be successful in life, irrespective of starting points.
Our students study a holistic curriculum and we teach the full range of subjects for as long as possible, ensuring students receive their curriculum entitlement at key stage 3. Our curriculum offer should be viewed as a five-year journey, following a progressive model, in two distinct parts:
• Key Stage 3 (Years 7, 8 & 9) - Building upon (not repeating) the knowledge and skills developed at Key Stage 2, receiving the full breadth in their Key Stage 3 national curriculum entitlement, ensuring firm foundations are laid for future success.
• Key Stage 4 (Years 10 & 11) - Students are able to follow a full range of GCSE and vocational qualifications which they will sit at the end of Year 11, to support a successful progression to high-quality Post-16 pathways.
Student leadership is at the heart of our mission statement “Be the Best; Become the leaders of Tomorrow!” At Moor End we believe that every student should be able to contribute to school life. This is mainly done through the student council body which comprises of over 50 students. At the start of every academic year, each form group elects a student to represent them on the student council. We have our elected head students with their team of senior student leaders that oversee the running of the student council. The student council meets every month with a focused agenda set by head students. The powers of the student council body include: reviewing petitions created by students, student voice via the form ballot box, administrative duties given by Heads of Year, selecting charities for fundraising for the year and much more!
Our student body has played a massive role in our accreditation as a World Class School, A Beacon School for Holocaust Education and our UNICEF Rights Respecting Schools Award. These awards have helped develop the key skills that our student leadership team will need in order to succeed in life after school. We continue to look for Awards that will recognise the outstanding work of our students and school.
Our PSHE programme is stage and age appropriate and focuses on creating exemplary citizens for Modern Britain. It develops spiritual, moral, physical and cultural awareness and prepares them for life after school. Our PSHE programme is mainly delivered through form time so students have a trusted adult who is familiar to them to talk to about the most sensitive and challenging topics. Other subjects such as RE and Citizenship also contribute to the PSHE programme.
At Moor End Academy we take pride in our extensive enrichment programme. All students are welcome to take part in a range of after school clubs, these range from Games Club, Sign language club to Debate club. These take part Tuesday to Friday from 3-4pm.
Alongside this offer, students are welcome to make use of the excellent facilities in both the M-zone (for Year 11’s) and the library (all other year groups) in the mornings and after school. Our student leadership team all take part in at least one extra curricular club if not more!
Our enrichment programme also strengthens learning in the curriculum with many subjects arranging visits from external providers or trips. We have been lucky to have the Manchester Actors Company into school to deliver live performances of English literature texts such as Romeo and Juliet. Our annual Parliament trip in Citizenship allows students to spend the day touring the Houses of Parliament as well as taking part in a law and debating workshop. Other offers include Mock Trials, Q&A session with local councillors and Members of Parliament as well as trips to the seaside for our Achieve group. These experiences play an important part in building the cultural capital of our students.
Moor End hold the CEIAG Quality in Standards benchmark. We ensure that all students are able to have six encounters with academic providers or apprenticeships before leaving in Year 11. We are fortunate to have a strong Alumni group who are invited to work with and inspire our students throughout the academic year. Throughout the year students will be able to engage with a careers fair, apprenticeship fair, apprenticeship drop down days and external speakers from different organisations.
The academy will be non-selective, taking in students of all abilities and ethnic backgrounds serving the local community first. The academy is part of South Pennine Academies and will retain its current admissions criteria and catchment area / priority admission area (PAA). The academy will admit children with Education Health and Care Plans (EHCP) where the academy is named on the EHCP. The academy also has 12 permanent and two transitional places for students with a severe visual impairment. All applications for students with an EHCP must follow the local authority admissions route via SENACT. The local authority will coordinate normal round applications for entry at age 11.
Arrangement for applications for places at Moor End Academy will be made in accordance with Kirklees Local Authority coordinated admission arrangements. Information and an application form can be found at:
https://www.kirklees.gov.uk/beta/schools-and-education. aspx#admissions
The academy coordinates its own in-year applications and will participate with, in-year fair access protocols. Please contact the Academy directly for information.

At Moor End Academy students are given a safe space where we can thrive to become the best possible versions of ourselves with the support of teachers and peers. Being a student here opens many doors which has helped me and my fellow students when applying for colleges and pursuing further education. We collectively feel honoured to be part of such a well-renowned, diverse community where everyone can be themselves and grow into the person they wish to be, whilst having the acceptance of those around them.
With our simple yet very meaningful mission statement, ‘Be the best - become the leaders of tomorrow’ our academy sets out a black and white expectation for all students which will help them excel throughout life and become role models to others. With high-quality education and teachers who are always ready to give a helping hand when school becomes stressful and overwhelming, the students here are reminded our school has the facilities to help them overcome these hurdles.
As a student here, myself and now moving into my last year, I feel saddened to leave a place with such a positive work ethic, which has helped to shape me as person I am today. I am grateful to know I have had a fulfilling secondary school experience that prepares me for later life events. When I leave, I know our school will continue to inspire both present and future students and push them to their greatest potential.
I just wanted to thank all involved in the nursery sports day, the staff and older children competing and helping were an absolute delight to see. Most importantly my girls had a wonderful time and got to build a trusting relationship with older children from Moor End Academy. The Moor End helpers were an absolute credit and had so much patience and care for all of the children. Thankyou so very much!
Students overwhelmingly agreed they were proud to be a student at this academy. They are positive about the changes in the academy brought about by the Executive Principal and mentioned how the physical environment of the academy has changed for the better and students’ behaviour has improved.
Staff appreciate that senior leaders are visible around school, visiting lessons and being on corridors during transition to lessons and break/lunchtime.
The Executive Principal has a genuine passion for the academy, for his staff to do well and most importantly his students to be the best they can be, irrespective of starting points.
Behaviour is impeccable in all lessons and indeed on corridors at changeover. There are high levels of engagement from students with teachers, and teaching in class.
The staff show they care about the children’s wellbeing and teach them to express themselves. I think the safeguarding team at Moor End are excellent, they listen, put plans in place and always have a welcoming open door policy.
Leaders have created a comprehensive curriculum overview document which goes into detail about their intent and implementation of the curriculum. It shows how the five-year curriculum sequence, amplifies the breadth and balance of the curriculum across all subjects.
Behaviour and attitudes across the academy are exemplary, both in lessons and on corridors. Students are respectful and polite to each other and to visitors, including me. They make you feel welcome and engage well with you when talking about their learning. They are a genuine credit to themselves and a joy to work with.
What I think is the best things about mental health, wellbeing and safeguarding at Moor End is that the staff can solve your problem quite easily no matter what and that they will always be there for you which I think is the best thing about it.
