LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN GRADUATE RETURNS TO FIRST GRADE BY L E A H W E B E R

Rachel Taylor dressed as The Paper Bag Princess

There will be a familiar face on the Lookout Mountain Elementary campus this year. Rachel Taylor is not only a new first grade teacher she is also a Lookout Mountain graduate. Rachel is also a graduate of Thunderbird High School and University of Arizona, where she majored in Early Childhood Education. She has always enjoyed working with children and spent her youth as a nanny, babysitter, swim instructor, and lifeguard. In addition to being a teacher, Rachael and a dear friend recently launched an online boutique which specializes in vintage finds. We caught up with Rachel at the Lookout Mountain open house. What are your favorite Lookout and Moon Valley memories? “I loved being a part of the traditions on campus like Zoofari, the 6th grade trip, and all of the great art projects in Mrs. Penny’s room. I loved knowing all of the kids in grades above and below me and seeing them in every stage of life! It was so fun to be in swim team, basketball, National Charity League etc. with people in the community. My favorite Moon Valley memories include swim team every year from age 4-14 as well as my wedding in my parent’s backyard with Moon Valley golf course in the background!” What are your thoughts about the new school? “I think that it is interesting to call it a new school when so many of the traditions have remained the same! The look is different but the Lookout Mountain community is still the community I want to come back to! I love the ‘revamp’ but the old campus holds a special place in my heart.” What is your favorite thing about a first grade student? “My favorite thing about a first grade student is the unfiltered curiosity and genuine desire to know ‘stuff’. The questions are always honest!” Tell us about your new business. “For the last few years I have found a knack for finding vintage treasures in unsuspecting places and my home became too small to house all of them! Having a grandmother with fantastic taste helped my collection as well! I just think that these fabulous goods need a loving home! One of my friends told me, ‘you’ve been training your whole life for this business’ and that makes me really happy! I love finding cool

stuff and love to share it with people!” In addition to seeing her on campus you can also find Rachel and her amazing sense of style on these sites. www.instagram.com/penny_rye or www.pennyrye.com

Tips for Academic

SUCCESS

From Lookout Mountain’s own Mandy Taylor *Hear about what your children will be learning and the academic expectations for the year by attending Curriculum Night. *Read nightly with your children and ask questions about what was read. *Practice age appropriate math facts nightly, so the facts are well known. This allows your children to be successful in class when they are asked to apply basic facts to larger concepts. * Establish a consistent homework time in a quiet area after school, so your child will be successful and start to build good homework habits. * Check your child’s backpack for graded work, so you are aware of your child’s progress.

*Find out about the teacher’s communication plan (weekly newsletters, behavior calendars, etc.) and make sure to participate by reading the communication or reviewing the information with your child. *Have open lines of communication with your child’s teacher and don’t hesitate to contact them with any concerns.

The Lookout Mountain community is dedicated to engagement, enrichment and excellence because we all grow up here. Mrs. Mandy Taylor, M.Ed., NBCT 6th Grade, Lookout Mountain School
