Celebrating 50 Years of Saint Paul Parish

Saint Paul Parish was established when the development committee of the Diocese of Phoenix decided the Moon Valley area was ready for a parish for its 200 Catholic families. Bishop Edward McCarthy from the Catholic Diocese of Phoenix established the parish on August 26, 1976.The first mass was celebrated in the Moon Mountain Elementary School cafeteria on October 17, 1976. At that time a mobile home located near Turf Paradise served as the rectory for almost 2 years.

In 1978, ten acres of land were purchased at the present location (3rd Avenue and Coral Gables) in Phoenix. A multi-purpose building to house a parish hall, four classrooms, chapel, rectory and outdoor ramada with its bell tower was completed in October 1979.

The first mass was celebrated here on October 13, 1979. The new multi-purpose facility was dedicated by Bishop James Rauch on June 29, 1980.Father Eugene (also known as “Father Gene”), O’Carroll became our pastor in 1981.

In January 1986, a building fund was started to construct a new and larger building.

With funding underway, Bishop Thomas J O’Brien formally broke ground for the building in June 1986. The new church was dedicated on January 25, 1987.

In January 2002 the groundbreaking for a new parish hall took place. The building was named “O’Carroll Hall” in honor of Father Eugene O’Carroll on October 5, 2002. O’Carroll retired on July 1, 2008. He served as St. Paul’s pastor for 27 years.

Many of us feel that way as one year ends and a new one begins, filled with excitement and possibility. As we finalize 2025, I want to take this moment to sincerely thank all of you—our readers, advertisers, writers, and story sharers.

Together, we have completed another successful year in print for our loyal Moon Valley neighbors.

We are heading into Year 46—forty-six years of wonderful stories, delicious restaurants, ball games, ballet recitals, concerts, church services, and the openings and closings of many businesses, all within a truly local community.

Personally, this past year has been one of thankfulness and reflection.

Life can change quickly, and you can never truly be prepared for some of those changes. Health is something you simply cannot take for granted. It requires commitment and dedication to keep both mind and body in the best condition possible. The old saying that your body is your temple couldn’t be more true.

I’ve always hoped that the exercise bug would hit me hard and become part of my natural makeup—but the truth is, it’s something I have to work at. That said, I can report that habits really do form in about two weeks, and maintaining them is far easier than you might expect. I’m not here to preach about joining a gym or working out daily—no lectures here! But I will say this: start with a walk around the block every day.

Not only will you feel better, but you’ll also have the chance to get outside and connect—say hello to your neighbors, enjoy the beautiful flowers, watch dogs walking their owners, and smile at the cute babies in strollers.

So grab your glass and raise it high—cheers to a great 2026!

Recipe for a Lower-Stress Life

Are you stressing out? Take a break and ponder this for a minute: How much of your life is played out in a stressful state? How much of your day – each and every day – is consumed by at least some level of frustration, irritation, desperation, anger and/or sadness; any and every emotion you can conjure up to define stress?

For far too many people, stress is a constant negative force in their lives, and they carry it around from moment to moment, place to place, unable to do anything about it.

But that’s not you; at least it won’t be in a few minutes. Much like those extra pounds you could be carrying around, stress is a weight you can shed with the right attitude and the right actions. Here’s the first three ingredients in your recipe for a lower-stress life: Ingredient #1: More Organization. Do you like to keep your To-Do List in your head? That’s really not a list; it’s just random thoughts and ideas that are hard to keep track of and require far too much brainpower to keep organized. Or maybe you don’t have a To-Do List at all; perhaps you make up your day as you go along, thinking you can avoid stress by avoiding a worrisome list of tasks and responsibilities.

But that won’t work, because the average responsible person has things to accomplish. The way to accomplish those things with low stress is to make a list, prioritized by importance, and then cross items off as you complete them. In a sense, you’re putting your sources of stress on a list, rather than keeping it all bottled up in your head. Cross off your stress, item by item, day by day, and reap the wellness benefits in the process.

Ingredient #2: More Laughter. How stressed can anyone really be when they’re laughing? Try it if you’re not sure. Situations that inspire laughter (joking with friends, watching comedy, etc.) reduce stress because they’re generally not stressful situations. In fact, they usually remove us from stressful situations and give us a break from the madness. What’s more, laughing actually creates physical changes that help reduce stress, including endorphin production, increased circulation, pain relief and muscle relaxation.

Ingredient #3: More Good Food. Your eating habits play a role in stress on both sides of the road. On the unhealthy side, “bad” foods can stimulate short- and long-term physical changes that increase stress / anxiety. Fill up on a high-fat, greasy meal and then see whether you feel better or worse than before you started eating. Eat that way all the time, and your risk of health issues / disease increases, which certainly won’t help your stress levels.

On the healthy side, eating “right” not only makes you feel good about yourself, but also promotes the production of various chemicals and hormones linked to relaxation (serotonin), while reducing production of others that increase stress (cortisol).

Your recipe for a lower-stress life starts with these three ingredients, but we haven’t given you the complete recipe.

Talk to your doctor about these and other simple strategies to reduce stress and enjoy a healthier, happier life in the process.

Every January, people make resolutions to get organized, start fresh, and finally tackle the tasks they spent all last year avoiding. In our office, we see a wave of people who decide that this is the year they will get their estate plan done once and for all. They often tell us they feel guilty for putting it off, or that other things simply took priority. The truth is that most people do not wake up one day excited to do an estate plan. Something usually triggers that urgency.

What we have noticed is there is usually a catalyst. It could be a new baby in the family, a recent hospital stay, or buying a new home. These events tend to be the tipping point for getting an estate plan. Since we are in the season of making New Year’s resolutions, it is a perfect time to talk about why estate planning should be one of them.

Health concerns are a big motivator One common reason clients finally come to see us is a medical issue. They might have had surgery that did not go as smoothly as expected or a health scare that reminded them that life is unpredictable. Even something as simple as a doctor advising them to think ahead can get the process started.

Health issues also highlight the importance of powers of attorney. When someone realizes that their spouse or adult child would not automatically have the authority to access medical information or handle finances during an emergency, it becomes clear why an estate plan matters. We have many clients who come in after dealing with the illness of a parent or close friend and say, “I never want my kids to go through what I went through.”

Buying a major asset creates new responsibility Another common catalyst is the purchase of a significant asset, usually a home. A new home comes with excitement, but it also comes with responsibility.

FLAG Tournament Raises $19K+

A total of 140 colorful pinked-out ladies raised more than $19,000 for Breast Cancer Programs at HonorHealth Cancer Care at the “Fight Like a Girl” golf tournament hosted by Moon Valley Country Club’s Women’s Golf Association in early December.

Women came from all over the state to completely fill the beautiful MVCC course on a fabulous, sunny Chamber-of-Commerce day. The enthusiastic turnout, combined with the FLAG Men’s Event the previous Saturday, brought the total given to HonorHealth Foundation over the years to nearly $150,000!

Traditions and Resolutions MOON VALLEY MAGIC

BY DEBBIE ERBSTOESSER I make it a tradition to not do resolutions. They are stupid, except when they aren’t. Remember the year I resolved to stop butting into other people’s conversations? That wasn’t a bad one and I really did a good job of keeping it. I was actually quite proud of myself! The only exception was when I’d overhear someone in the grocery store looking for something and I knew exactly where it was. That darn horseradish is so hard to find. I usually buy 2-3 jars at a time when I finally locate it! *eyeroll So despite how dumb I think resolutions are, I am resolving to do a better job of gift wrapping Christmas presents. I was pretty much done shopping

by Halloween and wrapping by Thanksgiving… except that I got confused when some new items I subscribe to came and I ended up unwrapping some of the gifts to make sure everyone got the same thing…and still messed up. Then on top of that, we had a few mistakes on Christmas morning, when Mikayla opened one of my gifts and Jaden opened one of Inez’s!

You see, I color code gift wrap to the stockings. All Jon’s presents are red to match his stocking, Joel’s are green and Jaden’s are blue. Gary gets anything ‘Ho Ho Ho or Santa-ish’ This way I don’t need to fill out any whoto’s. The problem is getting the girls gifts wrapped correctly. Their stockings are all the same color with their initial on them. Therefore, I resolve to do a much better job of distinguishing whose is whose.

I might actually have to resort to using those darn who-to’s. Santa doesn’t have time for all those details and neither do I. Color coding has been my go to for years, even before I was a teacher, I just need to fine tune my method.

And I resolve to do just that. Happy New Year, with new beginnings, traditions and methods of getting things done.

New Beginnings Don’t Mean Forgetting Our Past The New Year often arrives with language about fresh starts, clean slates, and turning the page. For someone walking through grief, those phrases can feel confusing or even painful. When a loved one dies, life does not reset. It changes. And those changes invite us into a different way of living, not a way of forgetting.

Grief does not return life to what it once was. Instead, it reshapes it.

Routines that once felt natural may now feel unfamiliar. Traditions may shift, pause, or disappear altogether. Even ordinary moments, quiet evenings, grocery shopping can feel different than they did before. This is not something to fix; it is the reality of loss.

In grief work, the early experience after a death is often referred to as the acute loss period, as written by Karl Jennings. During this time, emotions can feel intense and unpredictable. Concentration may be difficult. The world can feel unfamiliar and unsteady. Many people worry during this period that they will always feel this way. Over time, the intensity often changes, but life does not return to its former shape. Instead, a new rhythm begins to emerge.

That rhythm does not arrive all at once. It develops gradually and unevenly.

Some days may feel manageable, while others feel heavy without warning.

These shifts are not setbacks; they are part of learning how to live in a world that has been altered by loss.

Grief is deeply personal and shaped by the relationship that existed before death. Parents who lose a child grieve differently because that bond is singular.

Siblings grieve through shared history and identity. Friends, partners, and extended family members grieve through the roles that person played in their lives. No two experiences of grief look the same, even when the loss is shared.

Because of this, there is no right way for grief to show up. It can be quiet or expressive, structured or messy, reflective or restless. It can hold sadness, anger, gratitude, exhaustion, or moments of laughter. There is no correct timeline and no universal path forward.

One common concern many people carry is the fear of moving forward.

There can be a worry that continuing life means leaving a loved one behind. In reality, remembering and talking about the person who died is not something

that belongs only to the past—it is part of what carries them into the future.

Saying their name matters. Sharing their stories matters. Bringing their memory into new traditions matters. Even as life changes, love does not disappear. The relationship transforms, but it does not end.

New beginnings in grief are not about replacement. They are about integration—finding ways to honor what was while allowing space for what is now. As the New Year begins, it is okay if your hopes look different. It is okay if simply getting through the day feels like enough. Grief changes the shape of life, but it does not remove meaning from it.

Rookie Mom: To Botox or Not to Botox BY BRIGHID CONSTABLE Nora Ephron wrote this great book of short stories called, I Feel Bad About My Neck.

I read it in my 20s and knew the day would come when I’d relate.

Well, now I’m 41. And I relate.

My 3-year-old son looks at my 11s between my eyebrows and says, “Ow, mommy.” He thinks it’s a cut.

Before my dad passed, he used to tell me I have RBF—arguably the cause of the 11s. I personally think it’s because I’m confused all the time and trying to understand what people are saying.

And then there’s my daughter, who goes straight for the jugular. When she’s mad at me she’ll say, “Well, you’re wrinkly and have yellow teeth.”

Ah, the grace of aging. (And the grace of my daughter?)

So here we go: to botox or not to botox.

Pros: Temporary relief. A little “youthful” boost. Cons: It’s expensive.

And honestly? That’s basically it.

Except it’s not. Because even if I smooth my forehead, I’ll still notice my neck. And my hands. And the fact that I somehow look tired even when I’m not.

Maybe I get botox. Maybe I don’t. Either way, I don’t actually feel bad about my neck.

I feel bad about time—mostly how fast it’s going.

And I feel amazed that I can still feel like me inside while my face quietly changes the subject.

But hey—if nothing else, I’d love for my kid to stop treating my forehead like an open wound.

New Year’s Resolutions BY ARCHER CUSHMAN Welcome 2026! It is crazy that another year has passed already! In my family, New Year’s is about reflecting on the past year and making intentions for the year to come. Our family has many traditions that we do on New Year’s Eve. Some traditions come from my grandparents and some are traditions that my family created. Some of them include: Breaking a cup: My grandmother’s family started the tradition of breaking an old glass cup at the end of the year. This symbolizes letting go of the old and welcoming the new. Only recently did we decide to put our glass cups in a plastic bag before breaking them because otherwise you might find glass in your backyard for the rest of the year.

Creating a vision board: My friends and I meet to make a board filled with pictures of things that we would like to manifest in 2026. We gather in the park magazines, scissors, glue sticks, and posterboard and spend the day cutting out pictures of things we hope to achieve in the new year. One year (when I was three), I put a picture of someone skydiving on my vision board and a month later a friend organized a trip to an indoor skydiving center without knowing that that was one of my goals. Vision boards are very powerful!

Sending intentions into the universe: At some point at the start of the year, my family builds a bonfire and writes our dreams and hopes for the new year on bay leaves. We then toss those leaves into the fire so that our wishes can fly.

Polar plunging: On the morning of New Year’s Day, my family goes over to our friend’s house to celebrate with a polar plunge. We jump in the ice-cold pool and see how long we can stay in for. Last year, I did about 20 minutes! After we polar plunge, all the kids jump in the hot tub for about five seconds until the grownups get in. Then we have a potluck and hang out for the rest of the day.

Choosing our word of the year: Finally, each person in our family chooses a word to represent what they want to focus on in the new year.

Last year, my word was “structure” because I wanted to get more organized.

I feel like I kind of succeeded. I started using a checklist organizer and I did a pretty good job of completing my tasks. This year, my word is going to be “rhythm” because I want to create a daily rhythm that feels calm and productive. I also want to challenge myself to find rhythm through activities like dancing, which I have not tried before.

I hope that by “stealing his thunder” with that iconic entrance, I’m not coming across quite as creepy as was his character, Jack Torrance, in the film. Rest assured, there are no haunted hotels or typewriters filled with “all work and no play” over here—just a genuine excitement to be back behind the keyboard.

It has been a long year away from the pages of the Tattler, and I have truly missed our regular connection. Over the past twelve months, I’ve been humbled by the number of friends and neighbors who reached out to tell me they missed reading my articles. Your kind words were the catalyst for my return, and I’m thrilled to be back in the fold.

Moon Valley Women’s Club Awards $14,000 in Grants

By Julie Pek The Moon Valley Women’s Club Service Project recently awarded grants to nonprofit organizations in the community that address hunger, homelessness, health or education. Members of MVWC submit applications on behalf of the organizations and the MVWC Service Board reviews and votes on how to disperse the grants.

A total of $14,000 went to projects at six different organizations: Foster Arizona to support their Young Women’s Empowerment event for women in foster care; Unlimited Potential for the purchase of multi-test glucose kits for on-site diabetes screenings for 55 at-risk individuals; Desert Sounds for the purchase of acoustic guitars to expand access to music for all children; Help Now to purchase snack packs for homeless, at-risk, and displaced students in 20 school districts; The Foster Alliance for new beds, bedding, and hygiene items for 8 children entering the foster care program; Lymph Rehab to provide welcome kits to 24 survivors.

Mary Harris, the MVWC Service Project Chair, announced the grant recipients at the December luncheon. “Thanks to the MVWC members who continually support the project, we’re able to make a positive difference in our community,” she said, adding, “since the inception of the Service Project in 2013, over $159,000 has been awarded in grants.” For more information, visit www.mvwomensclub.org.

Operation Shower Supports Military Moms—Moon Valley Neighbors Step Up Again Operation Shower is a national nonprofit dedicated to honoring and supporting military moms across the country. In 2025 alone, the organization hosted 24 baby showers nationwide and is aiming for 24–25 events in 2026.

To date, Operation Shower has hosted an impressive 241 showers—and this month, they will celebrate showering their 10,000th military family.

Here in Moon Valley, residents Liz Williams and Erica Cozby are playing a hands-on role in that mission. The pair are hosting their third annual Diaper Drive in support of Operation Shower’s Phoenix event. Over the past two years, their drive has supplied all diapers and wipes for 45 military moms. Last year, thanks to community generosity, each mom also received a play mat.

This year, they’re aiming even higher. With the sponsorship of Landmark Title and the support of this publication, Williams and Cozby are confident they can provide not only diapers and wipes, but a more substantial gift for each deserving mom.

The Phoenix Operation Shower takes place during the WM Phoenix Open at the Patriot’s Outpost on Tuesday of tournament week. The tent is completely transformed for the event, and moms receive special parking access for ease and comfort. While it follows the familiar traditions of a baby shower, the scale is anything but ordinary. Games are interactive and team-based, prizes are generous, and the atmosphere is celebratory.

A key element of every event is the signature “Shower in a Box,” the concept on which Operation Shower was founded and one that remains central to its mission. Each box is filled with newborn essentials, including diaper bags, pacifiers, bibs, books, and other necessities to support families during an especially challenging time.

“Operation Shower is a meaningful tradition held during the WM Phoenix Open, and we are truly honored to be part of an event that celebrates and supports our local military families,” said Erica Cozby. “Being able to spoil these deserving families is a privilege we do not take lightly. The generosity of our community—friends, family, and supporters—plays a vital role in making this experience unforgettable.”

For Liz Williams, the most meaningful moments happen beyond the gifts.

“The moms usually don’t know each other,” she shared. “This shower gives them a chance to connect with other women facing similar challenges.” All of

the moms attending have partners who are currently deployed or preparing to deploy. “The phrase ‘it takes a village’ takes on a whole new meaning for these moms. Watching them exchange information, build connections, and feel a little lighter—that’s my favorite part.”

A New Year, A New Moon Valley (Website)

BY DREW HUTCHINSON, PRESIDENT, MOON VALLEY NEIGHBORHOOD ASSOCIATION A new year always brings a sense of possibility, and as we step into 2026, the Moon Valley Neighborhood Association is excited to share something new with the entire community. We’ve officially launched our all-new MVNA website, and we invite everyone to visit us at www.moonvalley.org.

Our new site is designed to make it easier than ever to stay connected with what’s happening in Moon Valley. You can see upcoming events, pay your annual membership and security dues, learn about volunteer opportunities, and most importantly, let your voice be heard. This site is meant to be a hub for the neighborhood, and it will continue to grow as we hear from you.

As we look ahead, our goal is simple: to make 2026 the best year yet for Moon Valley. But we can’t do that without the support of the people who live here. Membership dues are a critical part of what allows the MVNA to function. Your $35 annual membership helps fund things many of us enjoy and sometimes take for granted, including the Christmas Eve luminaries, July Firewords, neighborhood events and sponsorships, communication efforts, and long-term projects like replacing and upgrading Moon Valley entrance monument signs.

That financial support matters, but what we’re really hoping for this year goes far beyond dollars.

We want to hear from you.

What would you like to see more of in Moon Valley? Should we expand the Holiday Light Parade? Are there other community events throughout the year you’d enjoy? Can we work together to address safety concerns on our streets, like speeding and traffic flow?

These are not rhetorical questions. We truly want and need your input.

Whether you email us, text, call, or simply plan to attend one of our monthly

meetings, your participation helps shape the future of our neighborhood.

It’s also important to share something that often gets overlooked: the MVNA is run entirely by volunteers. Every event, every email, every meeting, every improvement project is handled by neighbors who give their time because they care about Moon Valley. When membership declines, it doesn’t just affect the budget. It affects how much we can realistically take on with the time and resources available.

And here’s the good news.

In my 18 years living in Moon Valley, I’ve never seen the level of excitement, positivity, and engagement that we’re seeing right now. The feedback has been overwhelmingly encouraging.

At the same time, we’ve seen membership slowly decline. Much of that comes from people moving in and out of the neighborhood, and candidly, it also means we haven’t done a good enough job making sure new and existing residents know how to get involved.

That’s on us. And it’s something we’re committed to fixing.

But we need help. We need you.

Getting involved doesn’t require a big time commitment, and it doesn’t require a special skill set. It starts with showing up, sharing ideas, and supporting the neighborhood you already call home. Participation is free. The impact is real. And together, we can continue building a Moon Valley that feels connected, vibrant, and cared for.

Pause…Before Jumping into that New Year

SANDI HOWLETT The New Year is traditionally a time of resolutions and self-promises – exercise more, eat clean and less, be organized, down-size, pay off debts, save money, spend quality time with family and friends, make some career moves… you know the list. The list often seems to roll from one year to the next and onto the next… Safe to say, we have ALL been there!

Maybe you no longer make resolutions or maybe you do. Either way, before jumping into the new year, it can be helpful and insightful to review the outgoing year by doing a recap of highlights and lessons learned.

Before setting new goals (or rolling the old ones), I like to do some reflection. I need help to refresh my memory of the outgoing year. During the week between Christmas and New Years Day, I review my calendar and reread my journals…my daily gratitude journal as well as my regular journal.

It is a detailed walk down my personal memory lane.

My daily gratitude journal (5 entries per day) is the best of the year – those moments, people, and experiences that uplifted, inspired, or encouraged me…a 100% life affirming book. The one I use is a five-year journal so I can also reference the previous years for every single day. 2025 was year 4 of this volume.

My other journal is where I pour out heart and soul for my eyes only. This includes my wins, losses, questions, and uncertainties of daily living – a place I write with radical honesty and vulnerability as well as celebrate joys. There were some significant changes for me in 2025 that included much thought leading up to and afterward. Rereading the entries was both interesting and revealing as hindsight often is. Sometimes I wonder why I worried so much and other times, I realize I could have benefitted from a bit more research or contemplation

prior to taking specific actions. In any case, I can see where I have stumbled as well as soared, along with my rationale at the time.

While few people keep the personal records I do, you can capture a plethora of your memories and experiences by looking through your calendar, phone pictures, and credit card statements to jiggle your memory of how you spent 2025. The following questions are worth considering…

Where did you struggle?

What are you most proud of? Most regretful?

What did you learn?

Who was there for you? Who did you stand by?

If the closing year was a movie, what would the title be?

What is something you want to leave behind in the year that is ending?

What is something new you want to introduce in the year ahead?

What is a word or short phrase ‘theme’ you will take into the new year?

Before you leap into the New Year, take some time to look over your shoulder at the road you have traveled in the past 365 days. It can be an insightful venture for self-discovery that may influence your steps forward.

NCL Encourages Members to be Leaders By Payton Brummett NCL is an organization that is more than just about racking up volunteer hours to put on college resumes. In fact, my class, class of 2028, does not think that it should be about that at all. NCL, and the opportunities that it provides us with to volunteer, is a humilifying experience that instills strength, generosity, and reflection into our daily lives. It shows us what is truly important and how we can not only apply these aptitudes into our lives now, but also carry those attributes with us into our future.

I think that the best thing about volunteering is that it doesn’t have to be a huge deed in order to help the world; it is about the little things, such as a smile or hug, that makes the biggest difference in one’s day, and that gives them hope to get through the next. Not only this, but NCL allows us to bond with individuals who are not usually in our innermost circle. We acquire new friendships and make new connections with amazing people that we probably would have never met if it wasn’t for NCL. We work together through collaboration to plan, synthesize ideas, and execute those ideas in order to contribute to a greater good. NCL promotes each and every fruit of the Holy Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Us daughters and moms support each other in the good and bad and embrace these fruits with open arms in order to show our love for each other and people in need.

Above all, NCL encourages us to be leaders. And I think, at first, being a leader can seem scary because it feels like we need to stand on a pedestal or suddenly be a more prominent person than we already are. But that is not what leadership is about. Leadership is right there in front of us. It’s not this big role that we are required to fulfill in order to seem like we are the best out there.

Leadership rather is not demonstrated through words, but rather our actions.

And again, it doesn’t have to be these great deeds to perform to seem like a

leader; it is the little ones, such as, holding a door open for someone, listening and supporting those who need a friend to take refuge in, or even just putting the groceries away for your mom when you get home from the store. The last one especially, is something I think every daughter could work on, myself included.

To conclude, NCL is an organization that equips us with not only the important, but also spiritual attributes that will fill us with humility in order for us to live a joyful life. It allows us to reflect so that we can see positive things in our day that we can be grateful for. It gives us lifetime friendships, as well as teaches us not how to step up to be a leader, but how to walk into leadership as the person we already are. It teaches us to love ourselves, our mothers, our friends, and those around us more deeply.
