Educational NEWS

With it being the start of a brand-new school year, we wanted to share some interesting articles before we focus on our annual guide to secondary schools on the following pages.

Supporting autistic learners through interestbased learning

By embracing the unique ways that autistic children experience and understand the world, educators have a powerful opportunity to reshape learning not only for those with diagnosed needs but for all students. One of the most effective approaches for supporting autistic learners is interestbased learning – an approach that validates a child’s passions and uses them as a bridge to engagement, skill development, and emotional safety. What is interest-based learning?

Interest-based learning, sometimes called “passion-led learning,” focuses on using a learner’s individual interests as the foundation for curriculum design and teaching strategies. For autistic students, this approach taps into their natural areas of focus – whether it’s dinosaurs, trains, graphic design, or computer programming – as an entry point into broader skills like literacy, numeracy, critical thinking, and social communication. Many autistic learners thrive when they are given the time and space to explore their passions. Interests can serve multiple functions: they help manage anxiety as regulators, they spark engagement as motivators, and they provide familiar contexts through which new learning can be processed as translators.

Why this matters for autistic children

Autistic children often experience education as something that happens to them, not with them. Conventional learning environments frequently require them to mask their needs, suppress their instincts, and conform to social and sensory expectations that are exhausting and overwhelming. Interest-based learning shifts the power dynamic. It says: We see you. We value how you think. Let’s build on that.

School GUIDE 2025

It’s the time of year when parents of Year Six pupils need to apply for secondary school places for next year. We have a breakdown of schools across the county in this handy guide, and details of Open Days too.

Choosing a secondary school: Some questions to ask!

Primary Times is committed to helping you make the best choice of secondary school for your child

Secondary education is almost always very different in approach to primary education and choosing a secondary school for your child is a really tough and high-pressured decision. Exam results are important but you need to know whether the school you are thinking about is a school you believe that your child can thrive in.

To a great extent the questions parents need to ask prospective secondary schools are about how well the school will meet the needs of your child. So, if your child has specific needs, even if it is about making and keeping friends, then ask the secondary school what pastoral support is in place to help develop and encourage friendships.

Great secondary schools often have a head of year who follows the year group as they move through school. In our case, we know that we can email the head of year and he will follow up any concerns as the school wants the children to be happy and settled which will help them to achieve their best.

I’d also be asking about where students go on to after Year 11 (if the school has no sixth form). Talking to sixth form colleges about how well prepared the students who come from secondary schools are, is an important consideration.

Finally, the school where your child has been educated for the past seven years will know your child and will know the local secondary schools. Ask the school head which secondary school your child would be best attending and why. It will give you another perspective as to how well your child might settle and learn.

Making decisions about your child’s future secondary school, based on the narrow measures from Ofsted and DfE is only part of the picture. It’s worth doing the legwork as described above as this is the school that will support your child over the next 5 years and onto GCSEs.
