Modules on this programme will be taught in line with best practices across the university and in the sector. A variety of approaches, and good use of the latest technology, will be blended together to engage students in learning in class and beyond and to encourage full student participation. Meanwhile, the Course Team will strive to ensure that all modules embrace current industrial practice wherever possible.

The teaching and learning strategies employed throughout the course are those judged to be the most appropriate for each module at each stage and level of the course. The strategies have been designed to ensure that there is a progression from formal teaching through to student-centered independent learning as the student progresses through the levels of the course(s). A range of teaching methods will be used, including:

Lectures

» CO650 - Advanced Programming

» CO651 - Quality Assurance and Testing

» CO654 - Cloud Computing

» CO655 – Security

» CO658 - Data Structures and Algorithms

» CO659 - Enterprise Systems Development

» CO666 - Advance Mobile System

» CO699 - Project

This is the most formal teaching strategy employed in teaching the modules. It is generally used to deliver a body of theoretical information to a large group of students and is most effective when followed up by a seminar or tutorial session to consolidate learning. The lecture format may be supported by written handouts, Web, or library references, which reinforce and expand the audio-visual information presented. In addition, staff will make appropriate use of the VLE (Blackboard) facilities. This should enable lecturers to enhance the traditional communication and learning mediums, as well as making material available to students at home and university.

Tutorials / Practical Sessions

Often in smaller groups, tutorials are guided learning sessions, which can either support a formal lecture by students working through tutorial sheets with the help of a lecturer or by students working through practical exercises in, say, a computing room.

Assessment Strategies

A variety of assessment vehicles will be used as appropriate to the module, including assignments carried out in the student’s own time, in-class assignments, workshops, presentations, and formal examination. The form of assessment has been chosen so as to motivate students to achieve their best and create learning activities for the students. The assessment vehicles for individual modules are detailed in the module descriptor.

Assessments will be appropriate to the task, achievable, motivating, and vocationally focussed and will form a constructive part of the learning process.

Assessments will develop general transferable skills as well as academic skills.

Assessments will provide sufficient opportunity for the best students to exhibit a level of innovation and creativity associated with excellence.

Level 4 assessments will be primarily formative and will encourage the development of appropriate academic practice and concepts. The emphasis will be on frequent small-scale evaluations wherever possible, with a balance between formative and summative assessment.

Level 5 assessments will be more demanding, with the emphasis still on the development of knowledge, skills, and concepts but now encouraging learning at greater depth, emphasising the fundamental principles. There will be a shift towards summative assessment.

Level 6 assessments are designed so as to allow students to demonstrate their knowledge and skills so that they have become effective, independent learners. The emphasis is on summative assessment.

Advice, Feedback, and Collaborative Learning

Assessment is an integral part of the education process, promoting student learning by providing a focus for consolidating, applying, and demonstrating understanding of the subject matter. The listed summative assessment regime essentially measures and grades learner development and achievement in relation to the Intended Learning Outcomes. It also generates feedback information for students about the strengths and weaknesses in their work, with tutors affirming what students have done well whilst giving constructive and encouraging advice about areas requiring reflection and further improvement.

Entry Requirements

Applicants will be primarily assessed on their academic qualifications, although some previous experience and interest in software engineering or Computing or IT is desirable as part of the candidate’s overall profile. A typical offer will include GCSE Maths and English at grade C or above and a UCAS Tariff score of 80. A minimum of two full A-levels (or equivalent) is required. This score can be achieved from passes in two 6-unit GCE A-levels/AVCEs or a pass in a 12-unit AVCE. Every application is considered on an individual basis.

English Language Requirements:

» IELTS: 6 (min 5.5 in all areas)

» TOEFL Internet test: 87 (R22, L21, S23, W21)

» Pearson: 55 (51 in all subscores).

We also consider applications from those who have gained relevant skills through a wide range of vocational qualifications or responsible experience and experiential learning for mature applicants.

Progression Routes on Completion

Why students should choose this award

Although this course is intentionally broadly based, it nevertheless will teach you vital vocational skills in-depth throughout your time with us, covering the various Software Lifecycle stages (with example content of each as follows): analysis (applying Use Cases, Sequence Diagrams), Design (covering Class Diagrams, Finite State Machines), programming (implementing code in C#, Java & C++) and testing (addressing Unit, Integration, System, Acceptance). In addition, the teaching staff has underpinned much of the material with ‘first-hand’ commercial experience (via Knowledge-Based Transfer and/or previous IT careers) as well as being enhanced by their own research activities and professional certification programmes provided by Microsoft, HP, and Cisco. This latter element can optionally be taken by students throughout the course, providing a considerable advantage when finally entering the jobs market.

The tuition fee is £9,250 per annum. Students on this course may be fully funded by the Student Loan Company. This facility is only available to the UK and other European Union students. For more information, please contact the admissions team at admissions@mrcollege.ac.uk or +44 20 8556 5009.

give students the opportunities to undertake work-based learning and enterprise activities which can form part of the learning and assessment of the programme.

At Level 6, students may choose to undertake one of the following research-based options (Normally students at partner colleges will not study these options alongside other optional modules):

» Dissertation

» Consultancy Project

» Negotiated Work-Based Learning

The dissertation is a research project which is based on a topic to be investigated, and the outcome is likely to answer a set of research questions. The dissertation is expected to be submitted in the form of a thesis. Formative feedback is provided by regular discussions with the dissertation supervisor and through comments received on draft chapters.

The consultancy project is based on a business problem to be solved or an opportunity to be explored. The outcome of a consultancy project is likely to be solution(s) identified and/or implemented by the student. The final outcome is submitted in the form of a consultancy report. This report will explain and justify the steps taken throughout the project and the outcomes achieved. On-going formative feedback will be provided throughout by the organisational contact/sponsor as well as by the university tutor.

98 MONT ROSE COLLEGE PROSPECTUS 2023

The Negotiated Work Based project is a means to address a learning and development issue rather than solving a problem or exploring a research question. The outcome will primarily be learning gained, and practices improved. The final report is likely to revolve around a reflective learning process, explaining, justifying and analysing learning projects. For example, it could follow an experiential learning cycle several times to critique and evaluate learning gained from various experiences. Formative feedback will be gained from organisational contacts as well as university tutors – with the emphasis throughout being learning achieved rather than tasks achieved.

Entry Requirements

Students will be expected to have passed in at least 5 GCSE/GCE subjects, of which two must be Advanced Level or equivalent (BTEC National, GNVQ Level 3 at Merit, International Baccalaureate, Abitur etc.), GCSE passes in Mathematics and English Language, or equivalent, at grade C or above. All applicants will be expected to have a UCAS Tariff score of 200-240. International students will be expected to have an IELTS score of 6.0, with a minimum of 5.5 scores in all areas.

Mature students without formal qualifications, but with appropriate experience, may be admitted to the course. This is in-line with the university’s admission statement regarding mature students.

For students progressing by an entry with advanced standing to Level 6 an overall Merit profile in an HND, a Foundation Degree or a recognised overseas equivalent is required. In other cases, applications for advanced entry with specific credits towards the degree will be dealt with under CATS/APEL regulations and procedures.

Progression Routes on Completion

TEACHING & LEARNING LEARNING, TEACHING AND ASSESSMENT METHODS TO ACHIEVE THE PROGRAMME LEARNING OUTCOMES

Throughout the award, the objective is to develop the knowledge, skills and analytical ability of students to enable them to enter successful careers in business organisations. This objective is met by a combination of lecture inputs, workshops, self-study and directed research and investigation. Students are required to work both individually and in groups. The assessment tasks include individual assignments, group work, examinations, enterprise activities and project work in a combination designed to assess and meet the stated aims and the required learning outcomes.

The assessment strategy is designed to ensure that learning outcomes are achieved, and there is progressive development of knowledge and skills. During the Foundation Year, students will be exposed to a variety of summative and formative assessments whilst developing the academic skills to be a successful student at university; course content and Learning Outcomes strongly relate to students developing their knowledge and understanding of the subjects being studied and assessed. At level 4, students are expected to describe, explain and review concepts, theories and models; at level 5 students apply, analyse and evaluate; and

TEACHING & LEARNING

LEARNING, TEACHING AND ASSESSMENT METHODS TO ACHIEVE THE PROGRAMME LEARNING OUTCOMES:

The structure of the programme runs across 12-15 months (depending on when a particular cohort start) with 180 credits being attained over this period.

Students study 8 modules which carry 15 credits and a final self-managed learning module (dissertation) which carries 60 credits.

Students study four concurrent modules (MB701, MB702, MB703 and MB704) in Part 1 (Semester 1) and four concurrent modules (MB705, MB706, MB707 and MB708) in Part 2 (Semester 2). Personal development and research skills are taught in both semesters but receive a greater focus in Part 2. This builds up to Part 3, which consists of the self-managed learning module: Dissertation.

Class sessions comprise of a range of activities including interactive lectures, discussions, group work, presentations and business simulation games. These relate to topics that are set in a scheme of work for each module. Learning outcomes for the programme and specific modules are applied to the content under discussion at each session. A consistent approach in this is the relationship of theory to practice. Students are introduced to theories and content; discussion applies this to their experience and to case studies. Core texts are recommended for each module.

Students are assisted in further reading by the use of Blackboard and Library databases. This provides them with continuous access to learning materials, discussion boards, wikis as well as the full range of library facilities.

Throughout the programme, the objective is to enhance the knowledge, skills, and analytical ability of students. Learning outcomes are met by a combination of self-study, directed research and investigation, online tutor support, and Blackboard materials as well as tutor-led sessions. Input is not limited to tutor input, though the programme team makes regular use of guest speakers from respected organisations, and student presentations are also used to help develop personal research and reflection skills as well as learning collaboratively. All of these help to enable students to develop important personal skills needed to proceed with their careers in business organisations.

The assessment tasks include individual assignments, examinations, Time Constrained Assessment, case study analysis, personal presentations and postings to online discussion for a combination designed to assess and meet the stated aims and the required learning outcomes.

The dissertation and project modules have a regular discussion forum which will be facilitated by the tutor to check understanding, give formative feedback and allow peer-assisted learning. Even though the dissertation and projects are highly individual pieces of work, some students benefit from working in action learning sets – and these will be facilitated by the tutors in addition to individual supervision meetings. These allow for peer-to-peer learning as well as a peer-to-peer formative assessment. Such interactive activities help students to gain from different perspectives as well as develop their abilities to work collaboratively in a multi-cultural group.

The assessment strategy is designed to ensure that learning outcomes are achieved and that there is a development of knowledge and skills. Independent learning is embedded within the programme, and students develop a depth of understanding via synthesis, critical analysis and evaluation. Assessments are by coursework and examination/TCA with some modules being assessed by coursework only. Coursework takes several forms, such as an individual report, individual presentation, or reflective portfolio. The importance of the notion of learning from personal reflection is emphasised by the inclusion of the need for personal reflection in many of the assessments; even though not necessarily contributing to the mark awarded, the team believes that such reflective skills are an important habit to develop. Such assessment tasks, then, help to prepare students for similar challenges in their careers – with managers at all levels and in all types of organisations increasingly needing to be able to communicate ideas in different ways: face-to-face or remotely, with or without planning time, solo or with colleagues.

Formative assessment is provided for in each module – students learn from feedforward as well as feedback. Such support is provided in a number of different ways, such as: face-to-face in-class student discussions with tutors or peers, formative assessments, tutor guidance, and comment on draft work. The programme team also offers remote help through, for example, Skype or similar.

Assessment loads across the programme are monitored carefully to avoid imbalance or too many instances of clusters – although this latter point cannot be totally avoided given the nature of timetabled study. The programme team work to ensure that assessments are spread and are equivalent sizes such as word counts.

Entry Requirements

Applicants to the International Master of Business Administration will normally have obtained a Hons degree (or equivalent) and have at least 2 years post-graduation experience in a post carrying managerial or professional experience. The

broad nature of the International MBA allows us to appeal to a broad range of applicants from across a diversity of subject disciplines or professions. The global nature of the International MBA allows us to appeal to applicants from different parts of the world. Students whose first language is not English or whose language of instruction at undergraduate level was not English will be required to demonstrate English proficiency at a score of IELTS level 6.5 or its equivalent. In keeping with the nature of MBAs across many other institutions, the programme specification will retain some flexibility to enable senior and experienced students who lack formal academic qualifications to be considered, e.g. via portfolio preparation and interview. In line with the university Credit Accumulation and Transfer Scheme, potential students can apply for Advanced Standing by Accreditation of Prior Certificated Learning (APCL) or Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL); their application will be considered by the Course Leader or other member of the course team.
