—U-23 NATIONAL CUP— The United States Adult Soccer Association has managed the US Men Under-23 Cup since its creation in 1997. This year the competition was held all in one weekend with twelve teams from across the nation. The Ukrainian American Sports Center in Horsham, PA hosted the competition from the 13 to the 15 of June.

“The USASA under 23 Men’s program is a vital part of the development for Adult amateur players in the United States,” said United States Adult Soccer National Cups Chairman, Werner Fricker, Jr. “The competition gives the younger players one more opportunity to play and compete. This is a player development program. Some of these players may go on to play at higher levels in the game in the future.

Many will not.”

Fricker, who is a Life Member, a Chairman and a Board of Governor at our club, sees this competition as a way to further the other cups and in a great way, hook young players into the opportunities all USASA National Cups offer.

“This program opens the window for many players to compete in a national competition and learn about USASA and our programs. It is our hope that these players will go on to play and compete with long standing USASA Amateur Clubs Teams and Leagues.”

German Hungarians Enter U-23 Cup Our club of course entered a team. Our U-23 Men, interestingly nicknamed “Fire” does not play in a seasonal league; however, when the National Cup comes around the team regularly enters the competition.

Soccer Director, Andy J. Weyershaeuser as well as Claudio Tovaruela coached the team with Andrew Weyershaeuser serving as Team Captain. Our younger Major Team players, Sasha Malofiy and Pat Raykovits signed as part of the team. They played three games over the weekend. On Friday morning, the match against Houston Dynamo ended in a 3-0 loss for our team. At 4:00, our team then took on Mass Soccer and won the match 1-0. On Saturday, our German Hungarians tied Annandale United 2-2. This tie put our team out of the competition and Annandale United went on to win the Championship with a score of 2-1 against the Houston Dynamo team.

The United German Hungarians, Executive Board, Board of Governors, Chairman, Committee Members and Auxiliary Groups hope our members, friends and all Americans had a phenomenal 4th of July Holiday! God Bless America!

It is that time again for the Legends to lace up their boots, pull up their socks, tuck in their shirts and take the field. Our friends from the Gemuetlichen Enzianer have invited us to the Legends of Soccer Weekend on Saturday, August 2 at Plattdeutsche Park in Franklin Square, NY where the HOTA Bavarians clubhouse stands.

The preliminary information we have received from the Gemuetlichen informed us that an informal meet & greet at the HOTA clubhouse will take place from 12:302:00pm. The soccer match will be from 2:004:00pm. From 4:00-6:30pm, a BBQ will take place at the clubhouse. We are excited to be participating again in this event with our friends.

A New Group of Young Members Experience Kinderfest in West Haven, CT This year's Kinderfest was held on Saturday, June 7 at the Harugari Singing Society in West Haven, CT. We attended the event with about 30 people, a mix of all ages. The day started off around noon with greetings to all our friends from other clubs of the Northeast. There was music, games, food and of course dancing! Our children's group performed "Turn Around Me". Kyra Malofiy, Kylar Kelly, Matthew Proll, Ryan Proll, Thomas Proll, Christopher Deely and Genevieve Avrich put on a wonderful performance, with the help of some of the teenagers in the group.

Later in the afternoon, both the younger children and the young adult dancers joined in dancing the Gauplattler with the other clubs. Congratulations to Kylar, Matthew, Ryan and Tommy for attending and participating in their first Kinderfest. The children had a wonderful time dancing and playing all afternoon...and the fun continued into the evening with an after party with Die Schlauberger Band. A good time was had by all that attended. Kinderfest is not just for the kids and we hope that even if you missed it this year, you will be looking forward to next year when the United German Hungarians will be hosting the event!

—ONE NATION ONE TEAM— The U.S. Can Play with Best of the World Fans Step Up and Believe We Can Win Whether you consider it fantastic marketing or carefully placed rhetoric the flurry of phrases extend beyond the mere slogan.

These words have become the battle cry for Americans who love the game of soccer. The performance of the team and the support of the fans have turned these lines into realities. We are supporters of club and country.

We are one nation and one team. We do believe that we will win.

In the group stage of the World Cup, The U.S. team finished and escaped the so-called “Group of Death” with a win against Ghana 2 -1, a draw against Portugal 2-2 and a bittersweet loss to Germany 1-0. Bittersweet because as a nation we always seek to win, though the circumstances of the loss and the standings in the group meant that our team went through to the next stage in second place.

In a brutal match against Belgium in the round of sixteen, the United States may have come up short in tactics and strategy but as a team that represents all of America they succeeded in inspiring a nation.

When in the throes of extra time, a youthful German-American Julian Green made us all believe.

Lest we forget that we are a social institution, this featured column is presented. The German Hungarians are a community and a community requires members.

In an effort to bring together our membership, staff writer Karina Fricker has taken upon herself the task of “Getting to Know You!” These short biographies will help us all to get to know one another better.

Therefore, if you see one of these faces you did not know before stop, smile and say hello. You may make a new friend for life!

Last month we discussed the Banat, the region that was once the home of our founders and many of our members. We ended on a note that after its founding in 1910, the Banater Männerchor became a rendezvous for all German-Hungarians in Philadelphia.

“Mir sin Deitsche Leit vun Ungarn” It is likely you have heard this before, but if you have not and you need translation here, “We are German people from Hungary.” It is such a simple and truthful phrase.

Although our founders came from the Banat, our club grew and became a home to a variety of German-Hungarians in Philadelphia.

While mainly Catholics sought to settle the Banat of Temeswar, people of the German realms of all faiths and regions sought a new life in the newly conquered areas. A few regions were settled creating distinct groups including, Banat Swabians (Banater Schwaben), Satu Mare Swabians, the, Bačka Germans (Batschka) and other Germans from Serbia's Vojvodina and Croatia's Slavonia.

As people of these regions too migrated to the United States, they found homes in social clubs like our own. Our historian Rudy Rack once wrote in our history, "Everyone who has had the experience of being alone amidst strange surroundings will recall having felt a sudden glow of warmth upon seeing a familiar face or hearing a familiar voice. During the great immigration to this country in the early part of this century there were many people who upon arrival experienced a feeling of loneliness, and oftentimes fear. Since man is probably the most gregarious of all creatures it is not at all surprising that when several persons from the same European locale found one another they automatically joined together, not only for mutual protection and comfort in this strange land, but also to swap stories, use the language to which they were accustomed (after a hard day wrestling with the new, unfamiliar sounds into which they had been thrust) and relax with a brimming stein and a cheerful song."

In 1922, our sport section, the Banater Athletic Club was created. For eight years, the group operated under that moniker. In 1930, however, the sport group showed its forward thinking mentality and changed its name to the “German-Hungarian Sport Club.”

The new name did not extend to the “mother club” for another nine years. It was, however more inclusive, yet still maintained a connection to who they all were as people together in America.

BY EMILY FRICKER Two of our friends, both from the German American Community of New Jersey and beyond have recently died. We were sad to hear this and offer our sympathy to their families, club members and friends.

STEVE BRENNER, a longtime member of the German Hungarians, described the club as “the place to go” back in 1953. He recalled that all the new immigrants became members of one German club or the other, but he chose the German Hungarians because he was a true soccer fan. He remembers yelling and screaming for our team! Later, he even coached youth soccer at the club.

Steve and sister, Johanna who is married to Joe Reiter, are of German-Hungarian background as they were born in Franztal, Srem, Yugoslavia. Steve’s wife Liz, his son Steve and daughter Lisa were once active in our club.

Steve held many positions over his years on many different committees. Brenner was the House Committee Chairman after the club was re-built in the 1970s. He served on the Board of Governors for many years. Steve was also the Sport Club President in 1956, taking care of dances and affairs. You may see Steve every Thursday in the bar with the card players, who have been playing for decades long.

Steve’s favorite events that were held at the club are the Night in Vienna and the Schneeball Tanz. He is still a German Hungarian soccer fan, and he wishes our team the best!

Brenner was a valued employee at my grandfather’s business, Fricker Corporation.

Whether it was club business or construction business, Werner Fricker trusted Steve’s opinion tremendously.

It is important to look back on the past and recall the people who helped our club to grow. Steve and many others should be commended and thanked for all the years of service that they dedicated to the club. Without the people of the past, there would be no people of the future! Thank you, Steve, for all your hard work!

Paul Erich Ulrich 68, of Union, NJ passed away on June 12, 2014 at St. Joseph’s Medical Center. He was born in Irvington, NJ and resided in Union for most of his life. He was an Electronics Engineer and was PAUL ERICH ULRICH employed by the Department of Defense for over 30 years until he went on to open his own consulting firm.

He was born on February 18, 1946 to parents from Germany and is survived by his wife Madeline Fisher. They had two children, Paul Jr. and the late Erika, who died at age 9 in 1987 with injuries from a car accident.

Paul was a member of Bayern Verein Newark where he served as president for many years. He also served as 2. and 1.Vorplattler for the group. He was also an Honorary Member of Edelweiss Passaic, a member of the Deutsche Club Clark, the Union Elks, and The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). He was also active in the United Bavarians of Greater New York and New Jersey. The time of his death, he was a “Gaubeisitzer” (Director) of the Gauverband Nordamerika. Paul was an avid supporter of the Schuhplattler Dance.

Paul has been a friend to the German Hungarian Schuhplattlers since our applying for membership to the Gauverband in 1988. He has attended a few events at our club and upon his club’s winning first place in the Gruppen Prize Plattling at the Gaufest in Philadelphia, and our club winning second place, it was Paul who made many of the arrangements for our two groups’ trip to Germany.

We had a great time with their club, Bayern Verein Newark at the local Munich area towns, the competition in Ingolstadt, and most certainly at the Hippodrome for the Oktoberfest.

I did not know Paul well, but had spoken to him a few times, the last time being at the 24.Gaufest in 2013. He was a very caring gentleman and was proud of his family, his club and his German heritage. Paul had many friends and they all will miss him!

NORBERT M. LUDEWIG 54, of Fairwood, NJ passed away on June 22, 2014 at his home surrounded by his loving family. Norbert was well known in the German Community from Delaware to Massachusetts for his Strauss Waltz music having founded the Norbert Ludewig Orchestra 35 years ago. His orchestra played our “A Night in Vienna” event in 2012 and was set to entertain us at the event this year on May 31, 2014, but unfortunately, because of Norbert’s long illness, the group was unable to do so.

Norbert was born in Staten Island. He had a degree in Civil Engineering, and worked for the Port Authority of NY/NJ for 30 years. He was a member of the Deutsche Club Clark and All Saints Episcopal Church. Norbert will be remembered for the lovely music of his orchestra as well as his accomplishments as an accordionist and a vocalist. ef

—SOCCER SHORTS— Congratulations to a number of boys who have made select teams this summer. Jakob Hubert (playing one year up) and AJ Pervis will play on the U-13 Maestro Select Summer Tournament Team. Evan Hubert (playing one year up), Ben Pervis, Stephen Thompson, Frankie Britsch and Rhyes Jones will play in the U-11 Maestro Select Summer Tournament Team.

Evan Hubert was also selected to take part in the Philadelphia Union Futures Development Team. We wish our boys good luck!

We recently had a few teams enter the annual Beach Blast Tournament in Wildwood, NJ. Beach Blast is a 5 v 5 tournament played on the beach in the sand. Teams consist of four field players and one goal keeper. Players play barefoot. Our U-9 Boys, Tornado fielded two teams in the tournament and one team came home with the championship in their division. The team won all four games in the group. The second team finished with a record of 1-1-1 in their group. Coaches, Rob Salvatore and Chip Heim congratulated their boys on a great performance over the weekend. www.ughsoccer.com is the online place for information regarding the vast number of teams in our soccer program.
