— GAUFEST 2013 — (CONTINUED FROM JULY ISSUE)

When everyone had arrived and was settled, Marlene Fricker, our Schuhplattler Coach, began speaking. I can’t remember everything that was said but I’ll give the highlights. Marlene has been doing this since she was officially appointed our coach and everyone looks forward to her comments. Marlene spoke about how proud we were of all our dancers, even though our group didn’t win any medals. She spoke about the individual 8 group dancer’s and the individual couple’s strengths and how they worked to overcome their weaknesses. She said that it had been a pleasure to work with them.

She thanked them, their parents and families and all who attended this gaufest to support the dancers. She spoke about the past and about a hopeful and more successful future. She presented their prize medals to Werner III and Allysa and their pins to Stevie and Emma. Susi Hartmann, our Cultural Group Chairlady, spoke about our youth who had competed in the einzel. Kristen Reiter had come in fourth place in the 13 to 15 ages; comments on their critique sheets for Kyra, Anika and Matt were very favorable telling them to keep up the good work. Our president, Bill Galgon after congratulating and thanking all, was ever mindful of his role and reminded us all that in exactly one week our club would host German Day and we needed to do lots of work upon arriving home. John Reiter, our former Vorplattler and Alex Blank, our present Vorplattler spoke a few words of pride and encouragement.

The Farewell Dance Rock & Roll was the theme of this dance which featured the rock band “The Breakfast Club” and they really did rock! All sorts of “rock” costumes were seen. A group of our women were the “pink ladies” from “Grease” while others were the “Spice Girls” and our men were various rock stars or group members or just dressed as they dressed in the “day”. It was a lot of fun. Karl Fetzer looked great as “Buddy Holly” and was among about ten chosen to be judged by the audience as the winner. Before the dance ended the four “Super Seniors” headed to bed, so I’m not aware how the festivities ended but I heard there was quite a to do in our BS Room and we were visited again by the hotel staff.

The Checkout We needed to be at our bus by 11 am and also to check out of the hotel at that time. We are all usually punctual and most were on time.

However…… Finally we were on our way home to Pennsylvania. It had been another great Gaufest. This was the 15 th Gaufest our dancers attended and the 13th Gaufest our members attended. The Gaufest is a four day gathering of the Gauverband Nordamerika, a federation of Schuhplattler dancers who are dedicated to preserve and perpetuate the cultural heritage of Bavaria and Tyrol. As we left and said goodbye to many of our friends, we looked forward to the 25. Gaufest which will be hosted by the SVEV D’Oberlandler in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 2015. This is the second Gaufest that this group will host.

The Trip to Oakford The bus made two rest stops on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. The trip wound its way through the beautiful Pennsylvania landscape and one can only appreciate the beautiful state we live in. After about 8 hours of travel, suddenly we were no longer on the turnpike but on a Bensalem Township Road. Great Gaufest! Great Family! Great Friends! Great Trip! Great to be Home!!! ef

— LANDESTREFFEN DER DONAUSCHWABEN— USA AND CANADA 2013 | CARPATHIA CLUB |DETROIT MICHIGAN The smells of goulash, schnitzel and the Hungarian wurst you crave fill the air. The beautiful Mad’l waltz by in dirndls.

Boys and men alike march proudly through the tent. Omis and Otas chat with old friends in the corners. Ancient dialects dot the murmur of the crowd. A few Landsleit are gathered around the bar. And of course polka beats, waltz and march music blast from the speakers.

If you close your eyes, could you mistake your setting for the Gasthaus? Opening them you will see and feel that phenomenon of the Schwowe in America; the Landestreffen Der Donauschwaben!

This Labor day we, the German Hungarians will be welcomed to the Carpathia Club in Sterling Heights Michigan for the festival that gathers an entire continent of German-Hungarian people!

With a much smaller group than the one that traveled to Kitchener last summer, we will depart on Friday August 30th through various forms of transportation and when we arrive in Michigan at our friends' club it will be more than 10 hours later. A grand total of just over twenty German-Hungarians will be attending with our club as well as a few friends from our local circles who share in our background. I must say that with a membership of more than 100 and a significant group that still claims German-Hungarian ethnic background, it is a shame that we can not rally more of us to this important and exciting event. We will attend with smiling faces and heads held high. We will march proudly with G.H. over hearts.

Our dance group is working on their performance that will combine some signature dances with some newly choreographed performances to traditional polkas. They always have a wonderful time preparing and challenging themselves prior as well as reaping the benefits of a successful performance before an audience of peers and elders alike.

Dancing is the highlight of these events and various groups perform both in doors and out throughout the weekend. Bands will entertain the masses of attendees! Social dancing as well will move about the floors! There is always some learning on these weekends. Whether it be making new friends, learning something new about our culture or the host club, making a connection over some common ground or common relation, the Landestreffen is a celebration of culture, of entertainment, and a celebration of knowledge about our people’s past and bright future.

IN MEMORIAM

EMMA MULLER August 23, 1934 – July 10, 2013 Emma Muller was born on August 23rd 1934 to the late John and Katharina Fricko Hanitschak in Botschar, Banat Jugoslavia. At a young age, her family including her mother with three children and an aunt, fled with other village neighbors from the onslaught of the Jugoslavian partisans and the Russian communists. United with their Father, and other family members, they settled in a displaced persons camp in Linz, Austria. By 1950 their family had increased to 5 children and the entire family including aunts, uncles and cousins decided to immigrate to the United States. The seven members of the Hanitschak family were the first to arrive in the US and were eagerly awaited by family members who had immigrated prior to WWI and WWII. Settling on Sixth Street in Philadelphia, Emma’s first job, at age 16, was as a “Mother’s Helper” in Cheltenham Township. Trained as a tailor, she later relied on those talents for her livelihood of mending clothing, crafting home furnishings and keeping tradition with the beautiful Banater trachts and dirndls she made.

GEORG MONTAG MEMORIAL SOCCER TOURNAMENT August 11, 2013 Hosted by the Donauschwaben

Married at age 18, her family grew and soon she had two daughters and a son. The young family became involved at the German Hungarian Club. In 1964, the children of our members were gathered together by Antonia Kreutzer, Emily Fricker and Emma and performed for the Kirchweih and for the Christmas show. In January 1965, the Cultural Group consisting of 32 children, ages 5 to 13, was officially founded by these three women. Emma was also involved with the Women’s Auxiliary especially with the Kitchen Committee. She was also a member of the Soccer Committee. Although no longer serving officially on the Cultural Group Committee, Emma helped throughout the years with her sewing and ideas and was always proud of her heritage.

survived by her son, Stefan Muller, her sisters, Hedy Walter and Anna McDonnell, her friend Frank, her grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and sisters-in-law. She was preceded in death by her daughter Rosemarie Muller and her daughter Linda Blaz, her brothers Lou and John Hanitschak.

An intimate gathering and luncheon in Emma’s memory was held by her family at the Austrian Village on July 16th. Her son, Stefan, spoke a beautiful eulogy in her memory which he entitled, “Auf Wiedersehen Emma”. Many family members spoke about their memories and experiences with Emma, as well. Emma had many difficulties in her life and she faced them with grace and unbelievable strength but she could always see the good and happy times and take them into her heart.

She was my cousin and I loved her!

She will be missed by the many whose lives she touched! ef

AMONG OUR MEMBERS The GH Soccer Camp was held from July 8th to July 19th for various ages with both full day and half day pee wee camp. The experienced coaches were headed by camp director Bob Wilkinson, who is not only a product of our youth program, but has been a head coach at our club for 15 years and an assistant coach at LaSalle University for 14 years.

Christina Paul was no sooner home from an enjoyable time at the Gaufest then she wound up in the hospital with heart problems. All in order now, we are glad to see her among us again. Just take it easy, Christina!

Three of our “Super Seniors” weren’t so “super” recently. Erwin Galgon, Hanni Reiter and Kathi Galgon had to spend some time in the hospital recently. All is fine! Keep well!

The Volksfest held at the Plattduetsche Park in Franklin Square, NY was held on July 13 & 14. The Heimatklaenge Orchestra provided music for the weekend and some of our members and dancers joined them for a fun filled weekend among friends from the Schleirachtaler Stamm, Gemuetlichen Enzianer and Original Enzianer.

Werner Jr. and Lisa Fricker attended the 100th Anniversary Banquet of the Eastern New York Soccer Association on Saturday July 13th. The banquet was held as a dinner cruise on the East River in Manhattan. They then joined the group at the Volksfest on Sunday, July 14. Werner also attended the USASA National Soccer Cup Finals in San Antonio, Texas in late July.

We hope all our members and friends enjoy the rest of the summer before the fall weather reaches us!!!
