August 2012 AMONG OUR MEMBERS Get well wishes to Kathi Steffen, who recently underwent back surgery. Hope she is up and around soon. Best wishes also to Joe Hartmann, who had to interrupt his knee therapy to have a gall bladder operation. Talk about bad luck but I hear Joe is a real trooper and is right back at his therapy again.

Congratulations to Kathi Noel, who finished her classes at Temple University for Executive Masters of Business Administration on June 30th. Her graduation ceremonies will be on September 7th at the Baptist Temple on the Main Campus. This spring, Kathi traveled to Viet Nam and Hong Kong for 10 days as part of her program studies visiting companies in both countries to compare their way of business to ours. She did some sightseeing and had a great experience. Brian Noel will begin law school on August 20th at New York Law School and will work part time at the Lanier Law firm in Manhattan while attending law school.

We wish Brian well and are always glad to see him when he is in town. He recently participated in the “Legends of Soccer” event. We wish the best of health to Erwin Stielow who recently spent some time in the hospital having a pacemaker implanted. We were so sorry to hear of the passing of Helen Primus, the wife of Gino Primus. She attended St. Madeleine Sophie Elementary School, Mount St. Joseph Academy and Immaculata University. Helen and Gino attended most of our entertainment events and we will miss Helen. She died on May 21st and a memorial mass was celebrated at St. Hilary’s Church in Rydal with interment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Our deepest sympathy to Gino. Our deepest sympathy also to Cindy Proll, whose father, Charles E. Lewis Jr. died on May 26th. He is survived by his wife, Catherine, and their four children and their families.

He was a soccer player and attended Temple University on a soccer scholarship. He was acquainted with many of our former players. We offer our sympathy to all family members. Member Clement Eppinger of Rockledge died on July 20th. He was the husband of Catherine Eppinger, father of John and Christine Brancato and grandfather of Johnny and Derek Eppinger. Clem was the youngest of six children and was born, raised and educated in a German community in northeastern Bulgaria. He emigrated to the United States in 1952 and was a member of our club throughout this time keeping ties with the German community. He was an avid soccer fan and a steadfast card player attending events steadily until his health would not permit this. He was a machine operator and a longtime resident of Rockledge and a parishioner of St. Cecilia Church where his funeral mass took place. The graveside service took place at Lawnview Cemetery. Our sympathy to the Eppinger Family.

Before we move into the Uniforms of the 70s I would like to turn the focus to the use and practices involving uniforms in amateur soccer. We will also document the idea of team-wear in general.

Amateur Uniform Practices The uniform was either purchased or hand sewn in in the early years, but in either instance they were funded by the club or by the team itself. When a uniform is obtained they are made in sets and most often are meant to last a few seasons. Because the uniform belongs to the team and not to the individual, uniform sets are often used by multiple teams, each team passing along a set when obtaining a new one. In adult amateur soccer rarely is a player ever issued a uniform at the beginning of a season. The youth are an exception to the rule because most often in the modern era parents pay for their uniform. The practices of those early teams with regards to the uniform are still very similar to those that are used today. Uniforms including shorts and socks are the responsibility of the coach or manager at the adult level. This practice has very practical reasons. The main reason is that if the coach or manager is responsible it is easier to keep track of the set. Most club teams and the German Hungarians are not an exception take pride in how the team looks just as it takes pride in how the team performs. Therefore a missing shirt or short is a problem. The second reason is that players sometimes tend to sometimes “come and go” at the amateur level, and having the uniform returned after each game prevents any player from permanently “borrowing” the uniform. The final reason is most likely the most important reason. In the world of amateur club soccer, no player is guaranteed a place on the roster on any given game day. Most often the roster or even the starting line-up is not set until moments before the team takes the field. In the early days of soccer the numbers were assigned based on position and being handed your uniform and number was symbolic of a player being placed on the roster or line up.

Travelling Clothes and Staff Wear The style and idea of what “appropriate clothing” is has changed over the decades. We live in a world today, were athletic wear is the norm. In the twenties and all the way up to the late seventies, the players before and after the game, as well as the staff members wore suits. This was the popular dress of the day. The idea of “Travelling Clothes” became popular over the years. This practice was another way of creating a uniform look of a team. In the 1960s teams often wore grey dress pants, with a white shirt, and a red tie. This was worn with a black sport jacket that featured the club shield. In the 70s the black jacket was replaced with a blue sport jacket with a Henry Birkenheuer, Frank Follmer, blue tie.

In the 1990s they wore a white club golf shirt, with long tan khaki pants. This was also often worn in combination with black Adidas club wind breakers.

2012 LANDESTREFFEN der Donauschwaben The president of the Schwaben Club of Kitchener, George Krachling, welcomes all to his club as they host the 2012 Landestreffen the Donauschwaben on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, August 31st, September 1st and 2nd. Kitchener is located in the beautiful region of South West Ontario. A passport is required for all who cross the borders.

Drinking age in Ontario is 19 years.

The event begins with a Friendship evening on Friday night. Among the menus for the 3 day event are: schnitzel, sausage, goulasch, cabbage rolls, roasted pig, schwaben burgers, chicken fingers and grilled cheese sandwiches.

The bands playing include: The Golden Keys, the Twin City Alpine Echo, Frieda and the Beer Nuts, and the Edelweiss Trio. There will be 10 minute Dance Group performances during band breaks. A “Can you learn a dance in 10 minutes” contest, a “Out of Box” Dance Contest and a “Sing-a-long with “Kati Bas” featuring the Schwaben Club’s own Catherine Thompson, accordionist extraordinaire. There will also be a bake sale by their “Frauengruppe”.

AND MUCH MORE! Events will take place in their club house or in their tent.

We have a nice group who will be traveling by bus and we all look forward to a fun filled, interesting weekend.

We proudly announce our 134TH BAVARIAN OKTOBERFEST, the original in the Delaware Valley to be held on Saturday, September 22nd and Sunday, September 23rd. This is an annual celebration of German fun, food and gemuetlichkeit, held rain or shine in our Fest Tents.

Recently the dance group took a trip to Camden, New Jersey to perform at the “Camden Riversharks” baseball game against the “Lancaster Barnstormers.”We arrived at the stadium at 6:00 and danced before the game started. We danced with a large group of all ages and performed the Stern Polka. For the rest of the night, we relaxed and watched the game. Some of our members took a seat at the stadium bar while others enjoyed the rest of the game. Overall, it was a good time and it went very well.

Currently, our dance group is practicing for the Landestreffen in Kitchener, Canada. We are working very hard to perfect our dances and to do our best. Not all of our dancers are attending this event, but we’re glad to have the ones that are. We are so excited to attend this fest and to have a great time before the summer ends.
