The German Hungarians have long been a group that celebrates the many facets and cultures of its members. It was in the late 30s that we first held an event that truly showed what we were capable of. Our History Books tell the story of the first Night that the German Hungarians went to Vienna! “An indication that our "sport" section possessed brain as well as brawn was shown by its presentation of such things as “A Night in Budapest” and “Gypsy Melody Night”, but they really proved themselves when they introduced the first “Night In Vienna”. The year was 1938. The clubhouse down at Second and Norris Streets was buzzing with activity and anticipation. Mr. Joe Michels and a group of young people had formed a committee to organize a formal affair the likes of which had never been seen before by the club and its members. Mr. Michels and his groups met regularly at his home to plan for the evening and to rehearse a dance - a waltz - they would perform that evening. The first Night of Vienna was a memorable one. Nearly 1,300 people attended. On stage the dancers performed to an admiring and eager audience seated at tables in the hall which were set up especially for this event. The tables remained as a permanent fixture of the club. And A Night In Vienna remained for many, many years. “ (From the written history of the GH) The club held on to this tradition and brought it t the modern era, having handed its performances from the Sport Club Dance group to its successor in the 60s with the formation of the Cultural group.

It has been said that the young men and women who pioneered this event and this form of entertainment at our club were harkening back to the music that they experienced in Banat living under the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

As this tradition grew among us the modern incarnation is one that is one that celebrates the memories of our many members and families who after being forced out of their homeland called Austria and Vienna Home.

In 1990 the Night in Vienna that many had known to love was held and it would be followed by a two year absence of this event. “In 1993, with Andy Weyershaeuser as Chairman and his able assistant Katie Palnik this event was resumed and renamed “A Viennese Ball”. It was last held in 2007.” (From the written history of the GH) Following 2007 once again the Viennese event was not held, and in 2010, as well as 2011 it was “replaced” with a event known as the Austrian Heuriger.

Many look at this as not a replacement of the Night in Vienna but as an equally enjoyable and traditional event. The Heuriger is a less formal event where the meal is served family style the wine is enjoyed and the musicians stroll throughout the hall. As it is still early in 2012 it is unclear as to whether or not this event will be held. I would make the point that it was an particularly successful afternoon, and it would not be out of the question to hold both of these events in a year!

This past weekend once again the music of Strauss filled our hall, that was finely decorated with the Austrian tribands. Our many guests dressed for the formal affair, and our dancers so elegantly entertained us. Men dressed in black tie, and women in gowns the affair was an incredible success! Music was provided by The Norbert Ludewig Orchestra and we ere also entertained by the beautiful singing of Soloist Jennifer Graf. In all the cultural group, billed as the German Hungarian Dancers, performed five dances.

They opened the evening with a grand march to the The Kaiser Franz Josef der Erste Rettungs Jubel Marsch. The dance floor was then opened for the first Waltz of the evening. In the second performance by the dancers we were ever excited to see the German Hungarian rendition of the Tritsch-Tratsch Polka written by Johann Strauss II in 1858. This was followed by the ever popular Hungarian Czardas. In the final set we were to see a version of the Landler from the famous Rodgers and Hammerstein’s THE SOUND OF MUSIC. The final performance was a traditional Viennese Waltz that the Dance Group enjoys and is particularly proud of. The music was another selection from Strauss, Morgenblätter (also known as Morning Papers). We were certainly entertained by the dancing as the dancers did a wonderful job, and seemed to have fun as well. Recently this group performed at the Union League for the German American Chamber of Commerce and this performance was put together for that evening. It is not hard to say that the Night in Vienna was a success this year as it has been in years past!

WINTERFEST Saturday, February 25th The Council Rock School District, along with the Holland Middle School, the Newtown Middle School, the Richboro Middle School and the Central Bucks School High Schools are hosting a “German – Austrian – Swiss” Dinner Dance at the United German Hungarian Club on Saturday evening, February 25th. The dinner will be Wiener Schnitzel or Vegetarian and will begin at 6:00 PM. Entertainment will be by the Council Rock Students and our own Cultural and Schuhplattler Groups. This is a family-style event and a large crowd is expected. The students attending must bring at least one parent or guardian and are encouraged to bring their family and friends. Some students will wear elegant Bavarian or Austrian clothing depending on their pre-planned skit performances.

Although this is a rental event, it is open to everyone and our members are encouraged to attend.

The admission price is $5.00 for adults and 5 to 10 year old. Ages under 5 years are free.

The dinner admission price for adults is $25.00 ; the 5 to 10 year dinner admission price is $17.00 and the under 5 year dinner admission price is $5.00 The attire is German, Austrian or Swiss or Up-town casual.

MID-ATLANTIC JUGEND EINZELPLATTELN Saturday, March 3, 2012 This is an annual event which will be hosted for 2012 by the Gebirgstrachten Verein “Almrausch” at the Cannstatter Volksfest Verein on Saturday, March 3rd . Many of the families and friends of our dancers enjoy attending to root for our dancers. Please let our Cultural Group Committee know if you are interested in attending. Last year the competition was hosted in Lancaster, PA and clubs from Pennsylvania, New York and Delaware participated. Members of our group did quite well and we wish them well this year.

CONGRATULATIONS, FEVERNOVA!!!

The German Hungarian Fevernova (U-15) Girls Place #1 in the State!!!

The U-15 Fevernova girls team played in the MSSL 2011 Winter College Showcase in New Jersey. Their first game on Saturday was against New Jersey Greater Flemington SC Flames and it was a 1 – 1 tie. The next game, the same day, was against Stony Brook Rush Academy from New Jersey and Fevernova won 2 – 0. On Sunday morning they tied 1 – 1 to Toms River FC Elite United 96/97 also from New Jersey.

Our team was down one nothing all during the game and finally came back to tie the game. The last game they played to win the tournament was against Twin County SA Real Magic, New Jersey. UGH came our big and won the game 1 – 0. By winning this tournament, the Fevernova has moved up to number one in Pennsylvania and number four in the United States. This is a great achievement and step forward for the U-15 United German Hungarian Fevernova Girls!!!

Feb. 2012 BAYERISCHER ECKE The Bavarian Club will be hosting their fun filled Maskenball on Saturday, February 18th and their Farmer’s Ball on March 17th.

These dances are always a good time with a great band and lots of fun. April 21st will be the date for their Spring Dance and the Ladies Auxiliary Penny Party will take place on Wednesday, April 25th.

AMONG OUR MEMBERS Congratulations to Gabe Dwyer, who recently was awarded the Union League of Philadelphia’s Good Citizenship Award through the EPYSA. Gabe is a member of our Under-17 Rush Boys Soccer Team following in the footsteps of his mom, Annie Kempf Dwyer and his grandfather Florian Kempf who both played for our teams.

Gabe is also a student at Bishop McDevitt High School.

Congratulations to Heather and John Hubert on the new addition to their family.

Jackson Rhys has joined brothers Jakob and Evan to make a family of five. Jackson is also the grandson of John and Kathe Hubert.

Monthly Progress Some of our members were recently in the hospital for some surgery. Adam Herbert, Andy Weyershaeuser, Kathi Piskei to name a few. Adam and Andy have already appeared at the club and Kathi, now we’re waiting for you. Missed you on New Year’s Eve and at a Night in Vienna. Get well soon!

Sorry to hear of the death of Gottlieb Burits, of the Austrian Village. Gottlieb was well known and active in the German and Austrian American Communities. We offer our sympathies to his wife Lotte and their family.

Again, another sad passing – Sieglinde Schiller died on January 25th in Sarasota, Florida. Linda was in hospice for nine weeks and defied all odds and was in good spirits until shortly before her death. She was able to spend one final Christmas with her family having a wonderful day. Sieglinde was the wife for 48 years of the late Frank Schiller who died in September 2011.

Sieglinde is survived by her daughter, Barbara Reiter of Warrington, her son, Frank of Sarasota and four grandchildren. Our sympathy to the family.
