A WORD FROM THE FOUNDER AND EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Memorial Day Weekend has come and gone. The day before Memorial Day is my favorite day of the year as it is motorsports’ premier day. Here in North Georgia, the day started at 8AM with the Monaco Grand Prix. Two and a half hours after the checkered flag on the Mediterranean Coast, the Indianapolis 500 took the green flag. Then it was another two and a half hours before the start of the Coca-Cola 600. With that race ending just after 10PM, I would say that I it was a fun 14 hours of the biggest races of the year. Wouldn’t y’all agree? Due to a two week delay because of a computer replacement, this month’s edition of Monthly Motorsport News is a double edition. The May/June edition contains the results from the races held from the last weekend in March up to Memorial Day Weekend. I’m so glad to get this edition out so y’all don’t have to wait any longer. Since I purchased a new computer, I decided to use the downtime to change the format of the race results just a little bit. From this edition forward, the results from the Minor American Championships will be listed first. After that, it’ll be onto the Major American Championships, then the Minor International Championships and the Major International Championships. Each individual race will be listed in the chronological order that the race occurred during the day. Of course, with the minor American and both international championships, the listings won’t always be correct as I may not find out the exact time of the start of the race, but I’ll try the best that I can. If two races start at the same time, the results will be listed in alphabetical order of the championship name. The next page after this section will show in detail the format of the result listings. Additionally, the championship standings at the end of the race will no longer be listed in the results. Instead, they will be listed at the end of each edition as they stand as of the most recently held race at the end of the month’s edition. Since Dixie Speedway is only a five minute drive from where I live, I have already been to three races there this year. My personal experiences from each of those Saturday nights have been written about and are included here. The month of June is only a day away. That only means that the motorsports season is about to kick into high gear. No wonder summer is my favorite season of the year. The next four months here at Monthly Motorsport News will be a lot of fun for me and most importantly, you the reader. So, I hope that y’all will spend some time with me by way of the page this summer for hopefully some great races from around the world. As always, I appreciate the readers of Monthly Motorsport News very much. Thank y’all for your patience over the last two months. It’s so great to be back and for y’all to read this great webzine again. See y’all at the races! Keith Laney Founder and Editor-In-Chief, Monthly Motorsport News

A CHAMPION’S STORY: BILL REXFORD Keith Laney Although 1992 Winston Cup Champion Alan Kulwicki is said to be the first NASCAR top level champion from the North, that is actually not the case. The only NASCAR top level champion from a state that is actually located in the North was a man by the name of Bill Rexford. Despite not having legendary career statistics, Rexford managed to win the 1950 NASCAR Grand National championship in the most unconventional way. Bill Rexford was born on March 14, 1927 in Conewango Valley NY. Not much is known about his early life. Rexford began driving competitively in his native New York at Penny Royal Speedway in Leon NY. He began to race in NASCAR during the 1949 season by competing at the races held at Langhorne Speedway in Pennsylvania and Hamburg Speedway in New York. In 1950, he became one of two drivers from the North to drive on a regularly basis on the NASCAR Grand National circuit. That 1950 season would be a memorable season for NASCAR in its early years. Rexford only won one race during the 1950 NASCAR Grand National season, an unnamed race at Canfield Speedway in Ohio, driving a Ford owned by Julian Buesink. Despite winning only this race, Rexford was a contender for the championship in the most unusual way. After championship leader Lee Petty was docked 809 points for driving in a non-NASCAR sanctioned race, along with Fireball Roberts and Curtis Turner having problems later in the season, Rexford was in position to win the 1950 Grand National championship. The final race of the season was held at Occoneechee Speedway in Hillsboro NC. With 50 laps remaining, the engine in Rexford’s car failed. Along with the failure of Rexford’s car, Roberts and Turner both retired from the race early. Although Petty won this race and Roberts and Turner had higher finishing positions, Rexford had built up such a lead in the championship standings that he was able to win the championship with 1,949.5 points after the race was over. With the championships, Rexford had become the first, and so far only, driver to win a NASCAR top level champion from the North. Also, he is still the youngest NASCAR top level champion at the age of 23. After this season, Rexford never had any further success in NASCAR. After the next three seasons were unsuccessful in NASCAR, Rexford decided to drive in the recently established Midwestern Auto Racing Club (MARC, now known as ARCA). Rexford began to drive in MARC in 1953 and stayed there until 1956. Complete records for the early seasons of MARC are unavailable, but Rexford won two races during the 1955 season, both of those races were at tracks in Ohio, one at Dayton Speedway and another at Toledo Speedway. After the 1956 MARC season, Rexford retired from competitive stock car racing. After retirement, Rexford and his wife moved to Arizona and began a trucking company named BR Trucking. After running that business for many years, Rexford retired from the company and then moved to Hemet CA. It was there on April 18, 1994 that Rexford passed away at the age of 67. Although winning the 1950 NASCAR Grand National championship by sheer luck, Rexford will go down in NASCAR history as a trailblazer for the sanctioning body.

RACE REPORT HONDA GRAND PRIX OF ST. PETERSBURG DAY 1-FRIDAY, MARCH 23, 2012 ST. PETERSBURG FL—After a nine hour car ride from my home in Woodstock GA yesterday, I was excited for the first day of the three day street party of speed known as the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. That’s right, six months after the last race that I went to; it was time to get my first racing fix for the year. Because the grandstands were general admission that day, my parents and I decided to sit in Grandstand 10, just off of Turn 1 of the temporary street circuit near Tampa Bay. There was a nice view of Tampa Bay from high in the grandstands, but I didn’t go to the race for the view of the bay, I went to the race for the view of fast, colorful cars. The first on-track session that started after my arrival was the Cooper Tires USF2000 National Championship practice session. Although no racing would occur that day, I still wanted to see the cars practice and qualify as I really need to watch race cars in action on the track. After the USF2000 cars completed their practice session, I went to view the cars in the support paddock, which was located behind my grandstand and in the main area of Albert Whitted Airport. While I was in the support paddock, I took a lot of pictures with my digital camera that comes with me to every race. The new Ferrari 458 Challenge cars were nice sites to behold. This will be the first time that I see the Ferrari 458 Challenge in competition. While I was viewing the Pirelli World Challenge cars, I saw one of the drivers that I had knew from watching World Challenge races on television. Bill Ziegler was talking to some fans outside of his paddock area. After my walk in the support paddock, I went back to my seat to watch the Star Mazda practice session. History was made after the Star Mazda practice session when the IZOD IndyCar Series hit the track for their first on-track session of the weekend. This was the first time that the new Dallara DW12 chassis and turbocharged V6 engine were used during a race weekend. As each car exited the pit lane for the practice session, I took a picture. It was exciting to see the new cars in action. I wanted to make sure that I captured this historic moment on camera. After all of the other practice and qualifying sessions ended, I left the street circuit to head back to my hotel. Nine-and-a-half hours of speed and the warm Florida Gulf Coast weather in late March took its toll on me. It was time for me to rest up for two more days of legal street racing.

RACE REPORT HONDA GRAND PRIX OF ST. PETERSBURG DAY 2-SATURDAY, MARCH 24, 2012 ST. PETERSBURG FL—After snoozing for the last eight hours, my father and I set out for the second day of the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. Today was the day. Racing would officially begin. We arrived at the track at 11 AM for the first race of the weekend. Due to us having weekend general admission tickets, my father and I decided to hang out in Pioneer Park, which is along Turns 6, 7, and 8. The first of two Ferrari Challenge races took place that morning. Since it was Saturday, I decided to walk around the park during the race and take pictures from different points. Taking pictures on a street circuit is a little different than taking pictures on road course or oval track. I did figure out the best points for taking pictures and other methods to avoid as much of the chain-link fence as possible. The second race of the day was the first of two USF2000 National Championship races. This season, I’m glad that there are high car counts for the USF2000 races unlike in previous years. As with the Ferrari Challenge race, I walked around Pioneer Park to take pictures at different points on the track. The first Star Mazda Championship race was run, and then it was on to IndyCar qualifying. IndyCar qualifying was quite entertaining. Although nothing happened around the Pioneer Park turns, there was an incident in the second session that required a red flag. The Firestone Fast 6 was fun to watch. Since I had never been to an IndyCar race held on a road course or street circuit, this was the first time that I had seen a Firestone Fast 6 session. More racing was to follow. The Firestone Indy Lights race was held immediately thereafter. Due to the long length of the race, I took the pictures that I wanted to take, and then I went to the IndyCar souvenir tent set up in Albert Whitted Park. I purchased an IZOD IndyCar Series lapel pin for my collection of lapel pins. My father and I then headed back to Pioneer Park for the second Ferrari Challenge qualifying session and the first race of the Acura Sports Car Challenge for the Pirelli World Challenge. After the skies over St. Pete were clear all day, clouds began to move in before the Acura Sports Car Challenge. Clouds didn’t move in over my mood as I was ready to see the final race of the day. Unexpectedly, an opening ceremony was held for this race in where there was an invocation and a singing of the Star Spangled Banner. I guess that the Acura Sports Car Challenge was the race to hold an opening ceremony as it basically was the second biggest race of the weekend after the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. After the incident filled race ended, it was 7 PM. That meant that it was time to head back to my hotel for another night of sleep for the big day tomorrow. At least I wasn’t as tired as I was the 7

day before because temperatures were cooler, just as they had been all winter up in North Georgia. That’s a plus.

RACE REPORT HONDA GRAND PRIX OF ST. PETERSBURG DAY 3-SUNDAY, MARCH 25, 2012 ST. PETERSBURG FL—Today was the day I had been waiting for since November of last year. That’s right; the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg was today. Overnight rain had made the roads a little wet in downtown St. Pete, but the track was not too wet. My father and I again set up in Pioneer Park, but this time, we sat in one place. We sat outside of Turn 8 as we anticipated a large crowd for today. I didn’t want to lose my good spot. No cars took to the track for the Ferrari Challenge warm-up. The first sight of cars came with the warm-up session for the IZOD IndyCar Series. While the IndyCars were warming up for their race later this afternoon, I used that session as a photography warm-up session. Quickly, I discovered the perfect way to take pictures without the fence getting in my way. This would set me up for a full day of racing. The first race of the day was the USF2000 National Championship, and then it was onto the Star Mazda Championship. It made since that those races were run in the order as they were as they represent the first two steps in the Mazda Road to Indy. Up next was the second race of the Acura Sports Car Challenge. This race was relatively clean compared to the race yesterday. After that race ended, there would be no on-track activity for the next hour. It’s now lunchtime for me. In front of Progress Energy Park, there was a concession stand that sold hamburgers. The banner on top of the stand read Hugh Jass Burgers. Being the smart ass that I can be sometimes, I actually order a Hugh Jass Burger by name. When I placed my order, the man taking my order laughed in a shocked manner and said OK. Either he must have not expected somebody to say that, or he must have not known about the banner above his concession stand. As I was talking to the concession staff, I told one of the workers that I had used the name Hugh Jass on two assignments, one in high school and one in college where I was required to use a person’s name. That generated a lot of laughs. I received my Hugh Jass Burger and went back to my little spot in front of the fence outside of Turn 8. It was now time for the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg to begin. Before the race began, a tribute video to the late Dan Wheldon was shown on the video board. Since there was no video board visible from my part of the track, I only heard the audio. The death of Wheldon last season in Las Vegas was sad, but his memory and legacy will always live on in the IZOD IndyCar Series and the city of St. Petersburg. After three formation laps around the street circuit in St. Pete, the green flag for the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. Although there was an incident on the first lap, the cars were back to racing in a short amount of time. With this being a street circuit, I knew that there would not be many lead changes or challenges for the lead. The race was fun to watch though. Twenty-six turbocharged engines in harmony was music to my ears. After 100 laps in just under the two hour time limit, the race ended with Helio Castroneves taking the win. I listening over the 9

loudspeaker as Castroneves climbed the fence at Turn 10 where the sign Dan Wheldon Way was posted for the street named after the late Wheldon. What a great tribute to a great driver by a great driver. It may have been easy to think that the end of the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg was the end of the festival of speed in Florida, but it was not. There was one more race to go. The Ferrari Challenge ran their second race to end the weekend’s festivities. As most of the crowd left after the IndyCar race, my father and I stayed behind for one more race. After the 45 minute race, the weekend was over. Now it’s time to head back to the hotel from the track one last time. There is a nine hour car ride back home tomorrow. To sum up my experience over this past weekend, I will say that it was a blast. The environment at a street race is really fun as it’s basically a big festival. All it is is a fun time to sit back and watch cars legally race on a street for three days out of the year when they otherwise couldn’t. Would I ever go to one again in the future? Absolutely!

RACE REPORT DIXIE SPEEDWAY SPRING CHAMPIONSHIPS SATURDAY, APRIL 14, 2012 WOODSTOCK GA—One of my favorite days of the years is the day of the first race that I attend each year. Since I had already been to a race three weekends ago, the next day on that list is the first race at Dixie Speedway that I attend. Most years, my first race of the year and the first race at Dixie Speedway are the same, but not this year. Mid-April in Woodstock can only mean one thing, and that’s the Spring Championship at Dixie Speedway. Even though the official championship season has not officially started, there’s a lot of money on the line for the drivers to win. And of course, I go to watch those drivers attempt to win that extra cash. As usual, I parked my truck in the same place that I have been parking it at Dixie Speedway for about the last seven years. With my camcorder and folding chair in tow, I walk up to the ticket window so I can purchase my ticket for a hot night of racing on a cool April night in Georgia. This evening, I will sit in the grandstand near Turn 1. While the trucks are packing the racing surface, I spend a little time preparing my camcorder for the night. It’s going to get some use out of it. After track announcer Johnny Clark prompts the fans to shout “Gentlemen, start your engines”, you know that it’s time to get the 2012 season at Dixie Speedway in Woodstock GA underway. The first feature of the night was the 15 lap Econo Bomber race. As usual, these cars put on an entertaining show. The next division on the track was the Super Bombers. It was a 15 lap race. The next small car, 15 lap race division were the Pony Stocks. I love watching the Pony Stock races. Their four cylinder engines make a distinct sound that the cars of no other division can make. It’s now intermission time before the late model divisions come out. I will use this time to change the batteries in my camcorder, as well as go to the concession stand and stretch out my legs for some more racing. Out of the three late model divisions, the Limited Late Models were the first on track. I watched them run their 20 lap race. Now I know that the action is heating up because I’m getting dirt flung in my face. That will happen when I sit at the turns during the late model races. My glasses always have this fine coat of dirt on them during the late model races when I’m at the turns. That’s enough talk about dirt for right now. The ground pounds next as the Super Late Models come out for their 30 lap feature race. Talk about noise, whenever I’m not at Dixie Speedway and I’m at home on a Saturday night during the season, I can hear these cars from my place of residence. That’s how close I live to Dixie Speedway. While the race is happening, I always find it fascinating to watch the tear offs from the driver’s visors float around in the air. The final late model race of the night is the 20 lap Crate Late Model feature.

11

After the excitement of the three late model races, it’s time to calm down before the end of the night with the 15 lap Cruiser feature race. The Cruisers are always fun to watch as there are two drivers in the car that have to work in tandem to win the race. Heck, they have to work in tandem just of finish the race. With the main driver controlling the throttle and the co-driver controlling the brakes, that can lead to some mishaps every now and again. This race didn’t have any serious mishaps though as the race was completed relatively fast. After that race, there is a spectator race before the end of the night’s events. After making the five minute drive home, I review the first motorsports videos that I made this year. Dixie Speedway, it’s been a long winter. I’m glad to see you again.

RACE REPORT USCS 600 SPRINT CAR SERIES DIXIE SPEEDWAY SATURDAY, APRIL 21, 2012 WOODSTOCK GA—After the excitement from the races the weekend before, tonight is a special night as the mini sprint cars from the USCS 600 Sprint Car Series will race at Dixie Speedway for the first time out of three schedule Saturday nights this season. This will be the first time that I’ve seen mini sprint cars race. It should be something special. Since I arrived early enough this evening, I’m able to sit in the center of the grandstands. That is always my favorite place to sit as it provides a better vantage point for my camcorder. Trust me; I need a good vantage point to record the mini sprint car race tonight. Usually, I don’t record the hot lap sessions at Dixie Speedway unless it’s a special occasion. This time, I recorded the entire hot lap session for the mini sprints. On top of that, I recorded the entire length of both eight lap heat races for the mini sprints as well. As with the hot lap sessions, I don’t always record the heat races either with a few exceptions. After the opening ceremony is held, the Econo Bomber feature race takes the green flag, and then the Super Bombers and Pony Stocks. Up next was the feature attraction for the evening, the USCS 600 Sprint Car Series. They ran a 20 lap feature race. The mini sprint cars put on a great race. It was fun watching them. The engines for the cars have such low displacement that they make a go-kart like sound. The winner of the race was a 17 year old young man. I captured the entire race on my camcorder. After the mini sprints, the other local divisions raced. Then, there was the spectator race. After the spectator race, I drove back home after a fun Saturday night in the South at a short track. Those mini sprint cars are fun to watch. I can’t wait until they come back on July 14 with their bigger counterparts in the USCS Sprint Car Series.

RACE REPORT DIXIE SPEEDWAY WEEKLY RACING PROGRAM SUPER BOMBER CHAMPIONSHIP SATURDAY, MAY 19, 2012 WOODSTOCK GA—It’s been about a month since I was last at the races. I had a busy last few weeks, so I was glad to get back to Dixie Speedway. Now, the official championship season was underway. I just sat through the hot laps and heat races and waited for the feature races to begin. I was a little tired from doing some work at home earlier that day, so I was more interested in the feature races that the preliminary sessions on the track. Those finally came. The Econo Bomber and Super Bomber races were relatively clean races, same with the Pony Stocks. Once the late model division took to the track, the night began to get fun. The Limited Late Models had a few spins throughout their race, but the Super Late Models got a little dicey. The race had two complete restarts due to wrecks on the first two starts before the first lap was complete. Then, the race went smooth until the last five laps when there was some bumping for position going on. It took quite a few minutes to complete those last five laps as a result. The Crate Late Model feature race had a little roughness to it, but the race was completed in a timely manner. More craziness was on its way. The Cruiser race was a very memorable race. One of the cars entered into the race was a former Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office patrol car. At first, I didn’t think it was a real race car, I thought it was on the track for show. When the track announcer called out its number and named the drivers, I then figured out it was an actual entry into the race. Its light bar was flashing and the siren was activated a few times. In fact, on Lap 5 of the race, the former patrol car was involved in a major wreck in Turn 2 as it flipped upside down. The race was red flagged. The drivers did make it out OK, which was great. Since I knew that the cleanup would take quite a while and it was nearly 11 PM, I decided to call it a night so I could beat the heavy traffic leaving the track. Another great Saturday night at Dixie Speedway, what more can y’all say?
