A WORD FROM THE FOUNDER AND EDITOR-IN-CHIEF Tell y’all what; I can’t get over the 50th anniversary of the Rolex 24 at Daytona. For a golden anniversary, a good show was put on by the many drivers in their Daytona Prototypes and GT cars. With a new distance record set and Michael Shank Racing winning their first ever Rolex 24, I would say that I enjoyed sitting in front of my television almost all weekend. That was the way to celebrate the 50th edition of the legendary race. Last month, five readers checked out the January 2012 edition of Monthly Motorsport News on Issuu. To those five readers, I want to thank y’all for giving it a look. I appreciate it very much. It may not be many views, but those five views mean a lot to me. Hopefully, we’ll get more readers for this and all future editions. I so glad that January came. Although there were only a few races that were held this month, I was excited for them as they provided me with more material for this month’s edition of Monthly Motorsport News. Plus, I was getting tired of watching videos of races on YouTube from other years. February will be even better with the many championships beginning their seasons. I always love Speedweeks. Let’s hope that the races next month will provide us with as much excitement as the Rolex 24 at Daytona did. See y’all at the races! Keith Laney, Founder and Editor-In-Chief Monthly Motorsport News

HOW I FIRST GOT INTO MOTORSPORTS Keith Laney One Saturday afternoon in May of 1992, I was waiting to leave to go to a friend’s birthday party. I was sitting in my living room while my father was getting ready himself to take me to the aforementioned party. Out of boredom, I decided to turn on the television to see what was on. When I turned on the television, the telecast for a NASCAR Busch Grand National race at Charlotte Motor Speedway on TBS was just beginning. At that time, I had never actually watched a race either in person or on television. As time went on, the race got under way. As the race went on, I watched in amazement at this spectacle that I had never seen before. As an eight year old boy from the South, I was enthralled at what I was seeing. Colorful cars with neat designs were just going around the track as fast as they could. I thought to myself, “This is so cool.” About thirty minutes later, my father came into the living room to get me so we could leave to go to my friend’s birthday party. At first, I told him that I didn’t want to go. He asked me why. I told him that I liked what I was seeing on the television and wanted to see it until the end. He told me that I had been excited about this birthday party for the past two weeks. As this birthday party was a roller skating party, I decided to go anyway. I loved roller skating as an eight year old. Well, it was off to the party for me. Racing would have to be put on the backburner for the next few hours. When my father and I got home from the birthday party, I asked my father if there were any races that we could go to. My father promised me that one day we would go to a race in person. Six months later, he fulfilled that promise in a big way. On November 14, 1992, my father took me to the race that he promised me earlier that year. As I was a Cub Scout, we went to Scout Day at the Races at Atlanta Motor Speedway. An ARCA race was held that afternoon as a precursor to the biggest race in NASCAR history that was to take place the next day. Going to my first race was such a big thrill. The first thing that I noticed about going to a race was how loud races are. I had never heard anything that loud before in my life. Noise aside, I was amazed more at the sight than anything else. Originally, I had wanted to stand right on a fence to get a feel for the speed. But my father wouldn’t let me as it was too dangerous. Oh well, I guess I was going to have to sit on metal bleachers throughout the entire race. At the race, I had a pair of my father’s binoculars with me. I kept looking into those binoculars with such amazement. In fact, I pretended in my mind that I was a cameraman and what I was looking at in the binoculars was part of a television broadcast I was producing. I was neat to look at the cars up close when I couldn’t get up close myself. When there was an accident near the area where I was sitting, I kept my eyes in those binoculars watching the safety crew clear that wreck. That was just as fascinating too. Other than that, I can’t really recall much more about that exact race. Years later, I found out that the winner was a driver named Loy Allen Jr. Other facts that I discovered about that race was the name of the event, the Motorcraft 500K. The weekend was just getting started. The next day, the greatest race in NASCAR history occurred. The Hooters 500 featured six drivers with a chance to win the 1992 NASCAR Winston Cup Series championship. Also, an era was coming to an end and a new one was beginning. This 43

would be final race for legendary driver Richard Petty and the first for future four-time champion Jeff Gordon. At the time, I was unaware of all the hype surrounding this event as I was only eight. So, I just watched this race with the same amazement as I did with the ARCA race the day before. All in all, my first ever races were the most fun that I ever had at that point in my life. Many more races would follow in the years to come. With the seed for my passion for motorsports planted that weekend nearly 20 years ago, here I am today writing my very own motorsports webzine.
