The IJBC 2012 Pack

The purpose of this pack is to inspire your creative juices and to inspire you from what happened in IJBC 2012. The goal is not to provide a list of what you “should” do - but to stir up some exciting possibilities of what “could” be done.



Challenge and develop our organization This goal is about engaging critically but constructively with the organisation we belong to. We are a integral part of CISV, and should seek to develop it. This includes the usual successful sessions about what happens at AIM, and meeting IEC and the committees, but we also want to go beyond that, and actively engage in the Organisational Review, making sure JB is a full part of that, and moving in line with the organisation.

Develop individuals and leaders

The IJBC 2012 Threads FIRST OF ALL WHAT’S A THREAD? A thread is a series of sessions aiming to achieve a common objective.

This goal hopes to encourage participants to think about how they are contributing in the group, to increase and make their contributions more meaningful, and also think of themselves as leaders and decision-makers this IJBC.

Encourage education and action Like in previous years, we look forward to exploring this year’s content area, sustainable development. This year however, we want to focus more on taking action and project management, and making full use of the resources and tools available.

Build an IJB structure and community This goal will be perhaps the most important as we evaluate the fundamentals of JB. We will bring together all the ideas, goals, documents etc. that we already have, but also try to look at JB from a fresh perspective. We hope to arrive at a clear and useful set of goals and statements about JB to ensure the strength of our organisation in the future.

Session 3: Hey,

This session was to have everyone start to get a sense of what IJB is and why we’re here.

WHY IJB? BRAINSTORM

WHY SHOULD WE EXIST?

(these are just some of the responses that were given)

- We are the heart of the organization - It’s a good source of volunteers and talent - It is a platform about cooperating and inspiring than making the board’s decisions - We produce many projects - It’s a space to make mistakes with no hard repercussions - Personal relationships developed bring motivation - With our big number of participants it bring more diverse ideas - Source of creating and planning new programs

WHY SHOULDN’T WE EXIST? - To be coherent with what the Organizational Review states - To diffuse our productive resources to the other committees in the organization - To simplify the organizations structure - To eliminate the difference between juniors and seniors


JB is our playground. We can experiment and explore different ideas without the fear of being fired.


Session 4 & 5: Earthquake 1 & 2

This session was about better leadership through understanding social styles.

The Situation: Groups are told that they are stuck in the basement in an office building after an earthquake. They will be there for 3 days and 1 person is injured. The Challenge: The groups must use consensus in order to come to up with how they will survive based on a worksheet. Then they use consensus to evaluate how they worked as a group. The Conclusion: We all have different working styles and they are all important. We need them to work together because, the Expressives think “Wouldn’t it be cool if ?”, the Analyticals find everything needed to make it happen, the Drivers make it happen, and the Amiables makes sure that everyone is happy throughout.

Session 6: I just met you

This session was about coming up with a group of values that we want juniors to understand and work with in our IJB community.

What values do we need to make our playground “safe�? {Groups were divided and asked to come up with values that they think are important to practice in our whole Junior Branch Community.}

- VALUES Inclusiveness and transparency Manage the conflict and take the constructive things out of it Voluntarism comes with responsibility Conflicts are valued as diversity and opportunity for grants Channel group efforts towards common goals Spice of social interaction These are just some IJB values that we come up with as a group, we have the potential to put them in practice, pass them on to our JBers, promote them in the the relationships with our JBers and also with our chapter members.


Session 7: Knowledge Fair

This session was an opportunity to hear about projects that have been happening about Sustainable Development.

NaJuWo

Stop Talking, Start Walking

JB Germany’s international JB weekend that always makes their weekend in line with the theme of the year. This year it focused on the social aspect of SD. They have numerous content activities. They had 2 guest speakers which were the Mango team & the NATO sergeant who talked the importance about social sustainability and cultural sensitivity.

A Workshop which follows a step by step schedule, starting with 101 - Sustainable Development and it’s definition, activities about how to be more sustainable, tools given to the participants through experiences and ending up by creating and making projects. The Toolkit to be released soon in the JB Library.

CISV International

Challenging the Norm

This project seeks to show the diversity within the field of sustainable development and to inspire you to act for sustainability in your local community. They have created numerous resources such as The Lunchbox and their website http://cisv.no/mango/

The website http://resources.cisv.org/ education/categories/ SustainableDevelopment has many projects and initiatives that have begun . Some of them are the Sustainable Food at camps and the Earth Hour Challenge 2012.

JB Sweden decided to change the way they look at vegetarianism at their camps. Instead of having meat as standard and vegetarian food as an option, it is now the other way around. This way, they are reducing meat consumption with 66-80% during their camps and meetings!

Inside Out Project

JB Germany’s project

This is a large-scale participatory art project that transforms messages of personal identity into pieces of artistic work. Everyone is challenged to use black and white photographic portraits to discover, reveal and share the untold stories and images of people around the world. Upload a portrait. Receive a poster. Paste it for the world to see!

JB Germanys project Big Jump was about raising awareness for cleaner water in the European Union. They would jump into a local river, lake etc. at a public space so people can see you then you raise awareness about why you did it and pow! There was also collaboration with LMOs who are concerned about the water quality in Europe.

Which project did you like the most? What idea do you think you can apply to your JB? Did any idea inspire you?

Session 8: GTS

The 4 IJR Candidates ran this session which was about the Global Training Strategy and they presented on how they chose to evaluate JBs work for the year.

• To increase the quality of JB training content • To increase the consistency of quality offered by JB trainings • To increase the opportunities to access JB trainings

This year, instead of collecting country data, they requested that each chapter's JB fill out an Equalizer evaluation.

Session 9: Intercultural Communication What is culture?

Where does it come from?

Tamara from the EVR gave us a session about communication styles and methods.

What does it do?

Culture is a combination of our personal, cultural and universal experiences which inform our values, beliefs and behaviors. Deeper culture is more complex and abstract it’s more more difficult to identify.

Surface culture is more explicit and tangible; it’s easier to identify and navigate. CULTURAL ICEBERG MONOCHRONIC

- take time commitments seriously - adhere religiously to plans - are concerned about no disturbing others - schedule dictates activity - work and time are clearly separate

- are committed to people and human relationships - change plans often and easily - base promptness on the relationship - interpersonal relationships dictate activity - work and personal time is not clearly separate

INDIVIDUALISTIC - believe honest people speak their mind - using I and me a lot - task are more important than the relationship - value equality in rights and laws - everyone has a personal opinion

LOW CONTEXT (direct) - direct verbal mode-straight talk - sender-oriented interaction - individualistic values - concern with saving face for self (NOT others) - linear logic

COMMUNICATION STYLES which are you?

COLLECTIVIST - harmony must always be maintained - direct confrontations avoided - relationships are more important than task at hand - silence in conversations does not create tension - greeting and farewell rituals take time

HIGH CONTEXT (indirect) - non verbal nuances and subtleties - self-effacing talk (humble) - listener-oriented interaction - group oriented value - spiral logic


Making the effort to change and adapt our behavior creates different feelings ranging from excitement and creativity to frustration and exhaustion. Differences exist, even though we don’t always know what they are, we experience them.


Session 10: and this is crazy

This session was about taking a look at our current JB Goals and going through the process of coming up with potential new ones.

In all the Regional Meeting this year a session on goals was ran and they were all to come up with new goals. This is what they come up with.

These are the proposed goals of International Junior Branch based on the similar goals that each region came up with. 1. Develop individuals & leaders

But how do we see if we reach these goals? That is where Indicators come in. An indicator is a statement which is a lot easier to evaluate than a goal. Everyone was divided into groups and were asked to do the following

1. Come up with indicators for each goal. (Ideas or already phrased indicators) 2. What is missing in the phrasing of the goals? (Suggestions!)

[ Note that: At the end of IJBC & AIM the goals weren’t finalized and there was a working group that formed to keep on working on the goals and indicators. If you are interested in working in this working group contact the IJRs.]


Session 11: Train on the Tracks

In this session we were introduced to a new tool that the IJB team has been working on - The Training Curriculum.

The training curriculum is relevant for anyone delivering a Junior Branch related training. The curriculum gives you an overview of how to structure your training and what content to cover. The curriculum is built in three parts: 1) Introduction to the training goals and indicators, 2) fitting the training for your role profile and 3) session descriptions. The document is, like Junior Branch, constantly developing. Therefore the impact of this first edition will be evaluated in the beginning of 2014 and the curriculum will be updated. (You can find the first draft of the curriculum in the JB Library)

ROLE PROFILES AIMING AT THE RIGHT PEOPLE

JB Developer

JB Doer

The JB Developer is a highly involved JBer. The JB Developer is an educator and facilitator with great interest in Peace Education and Active Global Citizenship.

The JB Doer is a dedicated volunteer. The JB Doer is active in the local community and interested in doing projects with an impact.

JB Discovery

When going on a JB Discovery you are starting from scratch. The JB Discovery is about getting the basics straight, about understanding what it is all about and get ready to volunteer for Junior Branch and CISV.


Session 12: CISV OR not?

In this session we discussed the Organizational Review and the Motions put forward this year. We talked about how it will effect JB.

These are results of some of the Motions that were decided during AIM. Motion 9, CISV replaced the board of trustees with a governing board, and one member is elected by juniors. However, IJB still keeps its position as a 'member' of CISV international alongside all NAs.

Motion 12, An 'Advisory conference' will be held every three years. However, IJBC will continue happening every year alongside the annual committee meetings.

Motion 13, The current committees will be replaced with 4 new committees, and JB will have a role in each; the Regional Teams will be part of the Chapter Development Committee, the IJB Committee will try to establish a place in the Educational Programmes Committee, and we will also have a role in the Events Committee.


Session 13: but here’s my number

In this session we took a look at the past IJB Team structure and the proposal for the new one.

OLD IJB Team Goals +1-800-IJB-TEAM We discussed why we have an IJB team and the importance of it and how we work towards our goals. We present our old and new goals and how we came up with them. We also presented the new proposed IJB team structure.

THE NEW PROPOSED IJB TEAM STRUCTURE PROS: -Relieves pressure off the IJRs -Inclusive -Accountability -Clear Communication Channel -Ensures Creativity while also ensuring the administrative side gets done - Sustainable

CONS: - Risk of over controlling IJB Committee -Pressures on the IJB Committee

1. Facilitate and improve communication within JB at all levels 2. Provide quality resources 3. Support JBs needs and ambitions 4. Enable and ensure IJB pursue the JB goals and CISV’s educational purpose 5. To constantly challenge to improve 6. Envision and strategize for the future of JB 7. To play an active role in CISV international 8. Maintenance in order to do our job 9. Encourage action and contribution 10. Grow a global community

NEW IJB Team Goals & Indicators 1. Support the needs and development of JBs - Our resources and educational tools are used. - There is regular contact with National Junior Branches. - There is regular contact with Local Junior Branches. - Junior can access appropriate quality training. - The IJBT is aware of local JBs’ needs and situation. - Local JBs understand the purpose and use of the IJB 2. Ensure effective communication - Juniors take proactive interest in CISV International - Information from CISV International and elsewhere is shared to all levels of Junior Branch - Updates from the work of the team are shared periodically - All our communication tools are relevant and up to date. - Juniors make use of our communication tools 3. Encourage innovation and improvement - IJB Team is active within CISV international. - Quality and relevance of work is regularly evaluated. - New ideas and projects are generated. - Spaces exist to undertake new initiatives & challenges. - Juniors contribute to CISV International decision making 4. This was the opportunity for any of the participants at IJBC to share their skills & talents with the whole group.

Session 17: Interesting Exciting Companions

In this session the IEC visited us and talked about the motions.

The IEC (International Executive Committee) introduced themselves and there was a lot of cheers! Then they presented the four biggest motions of this year. After that, we split up into groups around a few different questions that the IEC had come up with. Everyone took great part in the discussions.

THE QUESTIONS PRESENTED BY THE IEC THAT WE DISCUSSED 1. Why should the Organization be lead by a governing board? 2. Why is it important to have a junior elected person on the governing board? What is the role of the junior elected person on the board? 3. Why is it important for our organization to consider change now? 4. Why merge the program departments? What are the benefits? 5. What would the purpose of the advisory conference be? 6. Should there be regional representation on the governing board? 7. How would it be different if the senior management team lead volunteers? 8. What is the role of JB in the transition?

Session 19 & 20: Open Space & Decision Time This was the space to further discuss the JB Goals, IJB Team Structure, the Motions and work on projects. At the end of the open spaces we presented our ideas and projects to the whole group.

JB Buddies connecting NJRs & LRS across the world and outside your region to get inspiration and motivation.

A JB Weekend in Poland in September. It will be around Peace One Day so they are planning on doing something cool together.

Mediterranean Hood Workshop that is focusing on recruitment, awareness, cooperation and what CISV is. Their slogan is “We’re bringing sexy back, yeah!”

At IJBC this year we gathered for different reasons - to discuss different things, to challenge ourselves, and have some fun... actually a lot of fun.
