This week’s Veteran is Cameron Welch, who served in the US Army f r o m 1 9 9 5 - 1 9 9 8 Cameron and his wife Sherina were recently at the Madeley Fine Art Gallery, home of the ConroeArtLeaguegallery on Simonton Street in Conroe. For those who were born in Houston between 1964 and 1973, Cameron’s grandfather Cameron’s wasHoustonMayorLouie Welch, and he sent every newborn a welcoming document with his signature, just in case you werewondering. Camwas aUSArmyCavalryScout, and acted as the ‘eyes and ears’of the commander on
the battlefield, gathering information about enemy positions, terrain, and weathertosupportmilitary operations. Welch was stationed at Fort Polk, Louisiana In 1995, Cameron was sent to Haiti as part of the United Nations forces for Operation Uphold Democracy Hewaspartofthesecurity forcesfortheelection,and asa19yearoldatthetime, he grew up fast. Unfortunately, Haiti has not improvedsinceheleft,and Camhasnoplanstoreturn. In1997,Welchwaspartof the NATO Forces in Bosnia where he did Recon, Stabilization of Forces, Security Weapons storage, site inspections, andriotcontrol. Somesay
he looked pretty good in a UNblueberet. Youmight remember the 1997 movie ‘ThePeacemaker,’starring George Clooney, and NicoleKidman,whichwas partly set in Bosnia; well, Welch had nothing to do with that. In 2001, the Texas Historical Commission placed marker #17449 on the grounds of the cemetery, to show it being an Historic Texas Cemetery Veterans from the War between the States, World WarI, WorldWarII,Korea and Vietnam are buried there. The cemetery is on 6th Street, just off FM 1488.

The first gravesite they came to was of Robert Thompson Smith,whowaswithCo.G 20TexasInfantry CSA,he wasbornon July16,1840 and passed away on September10,1927,hewas 87 years old at the time of his death. He was born in Franklin County, Tennessee on October28,1813andatthe age of 80 passed away on June 19, 1893.
