October 2023

Did you know the upcoming new moon on October 14, 2023, is the Hunter's Moon? This name was inspired by Native Americans who would prepare for winter by gathering provisions. The new moon is also sometimes called the Blood Moon. This will be the first new moon of the Autumn 2023 season, which occurs right after the Autumnal Equinox. It's the perfect time to set your inten‐tions and focus on personal growth! However, if you plan on undergoing elective surgical procedures, it's best to avoid doing so during this time, and I wish you all the best!

Interestingly, the upcoming full moon, which falls on October 28, 2023, is called the New Hunter's Moon and will be in Taurus. The Hunter's Moon has a rich history and many fascinating traditions, including why it's often called the Blood Moon. Different cultures have unique be‐liefs and practices surrounding the moon, which holds a mystical and mighty aura that has captured people's at‐

tention for centuries. I also learned that the Hunter's Moon was a feast day for many Native American tribes and European cultures and that hunters would capture animals and stock up on food for the winter during this time. Surprisingly, the Hunter's Moon is smaller and lighter than usual. It rises soon after sunset, providing hunters with bright moonlight to hunt by during the early evenings. For Pagans, the Hunter's Moon is known as the Blood Moon, a morbid and fascinating name.

Libra (September 23 – October 22) — Happy birthday, Libra! It seems like you're craving some mental stimula‐tion. Why don't you plan a trip to the theater or an art ex‐hibit? Singles might find themselves intrigued by social choices that differ from their usual tastes. However, Fri‐day could bring some frustrating romantic issues be‐cause things are unclear. I would advise waiting for it to work out and seeking advice from friends on the week‐end. Communication, hopes, and wishes are favored then, so go ahead and express yourself.

Scorpio (October 23 – November 21) — Scorpio, it's time to deepen your bond with your partner by conquer‐ing your inhibitions and initiating romance. Your love life will improve over the next few weeks, but remember that one step at a time will get you where you need to be.

Sagittarius (November 22 – December 22) — Sagit‐tarius, chance meetings may allow you to accomplish more than you expected, either professionally or finan‐cially. Duty and pleasure sometimes mix, and your ambi

tions and personal relationships will fit together more comfortably.

Capricorn (December 22 – January 20) — Capricorn, give yourself some slack, and instead of spinning your wheels, envision what you want in love and create it. The confusion will clear by midweek, and you'll return to top form. Treat yourself right, and someone else will hurry to follow your lead. Others are impressed with your cre‐ative solutions, so put that creativity to work.

Aquarius (January 21 – February 19) — Aquarius try not to take risks this week. Follow your instincts and ex‐plore financial possibilities that exist close to home. Your passion may inspire fellow employees and catch your boss's attention, but try not to let your agenda interfere with your work ethic.

Pisces (February 20 – March 20) — Pisces remember that first impressions can be misleading. Give your coworkers a chance to redeem themselves and stand by your decisions; others will respect you more. Thinking "outside the box" will bring new opportunities to you, and your boss may have big plans that include you. Reach out to those who are on your mind.

Aries (March 21 – April 20) — Aries relationship issues are taking center stage, but try not to let them get under your skin. Be patient instead of letting your pride get in the way. Finding a different approach will help your re‐lationship with your mate.

Taurus (April 21 – May 21) — Taurus, movement within your job environment could shake your company's foundation, but keep doing your job. Humility under pressure is the best platform for your abilities. Fri‐day, you are considered for a possible promotion, so you can look forward to the new and exciting events that await you.

Gemini (May 22 – June 21) — Gemini, if you're single, you might find that your romantic situation is a bit tired. Why not reorganize your love life and generate new ideas for a fun and exciting ro‐mance? The mystery will be in the air, so enjoy these moments.

Cancer (June 22 – July 22) — Cancer, networking is likely mid‐month, even if you're not seeking more clients or future employers. Startling industry trends might unnerve management, but policy shifts will occur over the next few weeks. This could give you different ideas about functioning and maneuvering yourself politically.

Leo (July 23 – August 23) — Leo you may have to soften your approach for those who aren't quite ready for them. Take a step back and ask yourself if your conflict with someone is more about per‐sonality conflicts. Remember, not every‐one we meet or work with we will always like. If you keep your temperament to yourself, getting along with others will happen more quickly. A common goal unites people, and couples proceed through the weekend at a leisurely pace.

Virgo (August 24 – September 22) — Virgo, the weekends will recharge your electricity, and people will be drawn to you. A sweet gesture on your part will reap huge rewards. Try not to juggle too many things so that you don't lose track of what's essential. A strategic move may help push you forward, and new love is coming into your life. It's time to take a chance.

The October Hunter’s Moon

Courtesy of The Old Farmer’s Almanac

Why Is It Called the Hunter’s Moon?

This particular full Moon is commonly re‐ferred to as the full Hunter’s Moon. It is believed that this name originates from the fact that it was a signal for hunters to prepare for the upcoming cold winter by going hunting. This is because ani‐mals were beginning to fatten up in preparation for the winter season. Moreover, since fields had recently been cleared out under the Harvest Moon, hunters could easily spot deer and other animals that had come out to search for remain‐ing scraps. Additionally, foxes and wolves would also come out to prey on these animals.

The earliest use of the term “Hunter’s Moon,” cited in the Oxford English Dictionary, is from 1710. Some sources suggest that other names for the Hunter’s Moon are the Sanguine or Blood Moon, either associated with the blood from hunting or the color of the changing autumn leaves.

When to See the Hunter’s Moon in October 2023

The Hunter’s Moon will reach peak illumination at 4:24 P.M. Eastern Time on Sat‐urday, October 28. It will be below the horizon, so we’ll have to wait until sunset to watch it rise and take its place in the sky. Like September’s Harvest Moon, the Hunter’s Moon rises around the same time for several nights, so start looking for it on Friday, Oc‐tober 27!

As the Moon drifts over the horizon around sunset, it may appear larger and more orange—how perfect for the fall season! But don’t be fooled by the “Moon Illusion,” which makes the Moon appear bigger than it is.

The Harvest, the Hunter, and the Equinox

For decades, the “Old Farmer’s Almanac” has ref‐erenced the monthly full Moons with names tied to early Native American, Colonial American, and Eu‐ropean folklore. Tradi‐tionally, each full Moon name was applied to the entire lunar month in which it occurred and through all of the Moon’s phases—not only the full Moon.

The Harvest Moon and the Hunter’s Moon are unique in that they are not directly related to this folklore or restricted to a single month. Instead, they are tied to an astro‐nomical event: the autumnal equinox!

The Harvest Moon is the full Moon that occurs nearest to the autumnal equinox date (September 23, 2023). This means that either September or October’s full Moon may take on the name “Harvest Moon” instead of its traditional name. Similarly, the Hunter’s Moon is the first full Moon to follow the Harvest Moon, meaning it can occur in either October or November.

This year, the Harvest Moon occurred on September 29, so the Hunter’s Moon will follow it one lunar cycle later, on October 28.

Alternative October Moon Names

The names of the Moon are most often related to natural signs of the season or to activities that were done at this time of year. Some of our favorites include:

Ticket Selections: Ticket purchase is often selected in advance, however, there are last minute tickets available to some performances, if seats open shortly before the movie begins. Ho‐wever, I would strongly recommend choosing your films and events in ad‐vance so as not to be disappointed. Here is a link where you can browse the film guide: www.filmguide.hamptons‐filmfest.org/events‐grid.

Reading their website or leafing through the literature, one finds an out‐line of panel discussions, listings for conflict and resolution films, children’s film entries, shorts, student awards pro‐gram, world cinema choices, youth media, and the highlight of the festival, “Spotlight Films”. These are films known as “high profile” that are shown to HIFF audiences in advance of their public re‐lease in theatres. This year on opening night, the East Coast Premiere is NYAD, a film that tells the remarkable story of American marathon swimmer Diana Nyad (played by Annette Bening), also starring Jodie Foster as her best friend and coach, Bonnie Stoll, and is based on Nyad’s 2015 autobiography Find a Way. Nyad, at the age of 64, became the first person to complete the “Everest of swims,” executing a 53‐hour, 110‐mile swim from Cuba to Florida, through dangerous open ocean, without a shark cage. Another film guaranteed to attract a large audience is the New York Pre‐miere of Academy Award‐winning di‐rector Alex Gibney’s IN RESTLESS DREAMS: THE MUSIC OF PAUL SIMON will screen as this year’s festival Center‐

piece presentation on Friday, October 6, sponsored by UBS. Simon, consider a local, with a summer residence in the East End, has written and sung music that listeners of all ages still enjoy and dance to when they hear his songs. The extensive list of films and special events is too long to detail in this space, so readers can find out more information at www.hamptonsfilmfest.org Additional programming will continue to be announced in the coming weeks, so revisit the HIFF website frequently for the latest updates and expanded schedules.

Many shark species are struggling in their native coral reefs and marine ecosystems. According to the journal Science, “Five of the most common reef shark species have experienced a decline of up to 73 percent.” In addition, The Washington Post states that “a third of all sharks, rays and related species are at risk of going extinct.” As a result, scientists are concerned that species lower on the food chain will overpopulate without the presence of sharks as natural predators.

Humans are responsible for many factors that may be caus‐ing a decline in shark populations. Overfishing deprives sharks of one of their primary food sources. Millions of sharks get en‐tangled in fishing nets and longlines ever year. Plus, some 73 mil‐lion sharks are killed for the shark fin and meat industry.

Dear EarthTalk: The engine is fried on my old Honda Civic. What’s the most environmentally friendly thing to do with this car?

Studies show that the typical combustion engine has a life‐time expectation of about 200,000 miles. For the average Amer‐ican, reaching this mileage takes about 14 years. Surprisingly, a survey by Zebra found that the average American only keeps their longest‐owned car for eight years. The manufacturing of new cars, even electric ones, generates heavy emissions, con‐tributing to pollution. Large automotive conglomerates like Stel‐lantis (parent company of well‐known brands like RAM, Maserati, Jeep, Chrysler and Dodge) are now focusing on extending car life‐times and reusing parts to reduce carbon emissions.

One obvious option is engine repair or replacement. Repair‐ing or replacing your car's engine, though it may seem like a weak investment, is more environmentally friendly than buying a brand‐new car. However, older cars often have poor fuel effi‐

ciency, so it is good to check online databases to compare your old car's fuel efficiency with newer models you're considering. Another possibility is to convert your gasoline‐powered en‐gine to electric. But it is no easy task, as you’ll have to not only remove and replace the engine itself but also the transmission, gas tank and exhaust system. This option is certainly more eco‐friendly than buying a new car, and you'll save on fuel costs. How‐ever, the immediate costs for the conversion kits, accessories and installation service can range from $7,000 to $20,000, making it reasonable only if you plan to keep your car for a while.

If your car is truly beyond repair, buying a hybrid or electric vehicle is likely the best option. Then if you’re truly eco‐moti‐vated, you can choose to recycle your old car’s parts yourself. In doing so, make sure to do so responsibly. Drain and recycle used motor oil. Some recycling centers accept it for re‐refining and re‐purposing, and certain locations of Auto Zone and O'Reilly Auto Parts will recycle engine oil and filters for no cost. The same firms may also be willing to buy your car's battery for a small amount. The car’s tires, if in good condition, can be held onto for spares or sold for repurposing.

Beyond those simple tasks, you’ll need an auto‐salvage yard or junkyard to handle the rest. They will crush the car frame and chassis. The metal is then melted and repurposed. Car glass is laminated, so it cannot be mainstream recycled. However, your local junkyard may have contacts with large auto glass manufac‐turers, many of whom, according to only1autoglass, “are inno‐vating and coming up with new ways to recycle auto glass, for multiple reuses.” This practice isn’t the norm throughout the in‐dustry, says only1, but it is gaining in popularity.
