FISHING MONTAUK WITH CAPTAIN SKIP

Spring is finally here, and is a welcome sight a ter this very cold winter. So now it's time to start getting ready or the 2025 fishing season out here in Montauk!

For hundreds o years Montauk has been a fishing destination. The Native Americans would come rom as

ar as what is known now as Connecticut and Rhode Island to fight the Montauket Indians or the immense amount o bounty the East End o Long Island had to o er. There are not many places where you can go out the inlet and catch seven di erent species o fish. That's not even mentioning the Lobster, Clams, Mussels, Crabs, and Whelks.

In the 70's, 80's, and 90's there would literally be hundreds o people walking the docks in the a ternoon to see the boats come in with their catches. Fishermen rom the boats that came in would scrutinize each boats catch, so maybe next time they would try the boat with the best catch or that day! Families with their children were in great numbers checking out all the boats and their catches. They could actually a ord a week’s stay

People would come to Montauk to escape the bustle o the city and its boroughs, to experience the slower pace, the beauti ul environment, the antastic fishing, the ambience o a small historical fishing village with a lot o unique history dating back hundreds o years. Montauk is a rare jewel, so why try to change what is already per ect. Outsiders come here trying to re invent the wheel, but the wheel isn't broken. The beauty o Montauk is its simplicity, that's what Montauk is all about. Regulations are not out as o yet, but as soon as they

Surf Trips in Disguise

For those that travel the globe to surf, there is the bonus that areas with desirable waves are also typically beautiful and captivating. Whether they are untouched, touristic, chilly or tropical, any destination with waves is automatically special.

What happens with you are a mixed group, or traveling with (gasp) a non surfer? You chose places with additional features than the surf, including culture, physical activities in and out of the water, special cuisine, new language or any other areas of interest. When the water is lat or the conditions are not cooperating, the surfers and landlubbers are going to be cranky. We thought of a few destinations perfect for surf travel that gives ev eryone something to be excited about.

France: At the very least you will have daily croissants, excellent wine, thoughtful meals, stylish locals. Hossegor and Biarritz receive the most press, but the southwest corner of the Hexagon offers plenty of places to explore. Like many areas, fall is the best time to go.

Iceland: Most East End surfers are not hunting down cold destinations, but Iceland is as naturally stunning as it is rugged. Not many can say they surfed here, and you will see it in the minimal crowds. You can go when the days are endlessly long, or when waves are consistent in the winter, with the added bene it of the Northern Lights. Exploring the geysers, lava caves, the Blue Lagoon, and the charming city of Reykjavík, there is something to occupy every one.

Morocco: There is a problem if anyone encounters boredom where Montauk meets Arabia. Some refer to it as the Mexico to Europe, Morocco has excellent con sistent waves, point breaks and a booming surf culture which makes it easier to ind gear you may have left be hind. Mint tea, shopping in the Souk, camels on the beach, organic food and a mix of African, European, Mid dle Eastern cultures, fall and winter will be your best months to visit.

New Zealand: Worth the trek around the planet, New Zealand’s North and South islands offer beach breaks, point breaks, and endless adventure. You will never have enough time to do all the hiking, wine tasting, cave touring, thermal pooling and exploring so you will just have to go back. Winter is the best time to go especially on the North Island which will be warmer than the water on the South Island.

Sur ing around the world will please any surfer and inding locations that offer so much more will make ev

The Full Pink Moon is named for the early spring blooms of wild lowers, particularly the pink phlox that often signi ies the arrival of spring in North America. While the moon itself won't appear pink, the name evokes the fresh energy and vitality of the season.

CELEBRATE EARTH DAY

April 22nd

Courtesy of the U.S. Library of Congress: www.loc.gov

The Earth is what we all have in common!

Earth Day was first observed on April 22, 1970, when an estimated 20 million people nationwide attended the inaugural events at tens o thousands o sites including elementary and secondary schools, universities, and community sites across the United States. Senator Gaylord Nelson promoted Earth Day, calling upon students to fight or environmental causes and oppose environmental degradation with the same energy that they displayed in opposing the Vietnam War. By the twentieth anniversary o the first event, more than 200 million people in 141 countries had participated in Earth Day celebrations. The celebrations continue to grow.

In July 1970, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was established in response to the growing public demand or cleaner water, air, and land—its mission to protect the environment and public health. Earth Day also was the precursor o the largest grassroots environmental movement in U.S. history and the impetus or national legislation such as the Clean Air and Clean Water acts. At the turn o the twenty first century, the EPA announced new requirements or improving air quality in national parks and wilderness areas and establishing regulations requiring more than 90 percent cleaner heavy duty highway diesel engines and uel.

Earth Day 1970 made it clear that we could summon the public support, the energy, and commitment to save our environment. And while the struggle is ar rom over, we have made substantial progress. In the first ten years since 1970, much o the basic legislation needed to protect the environment had been enacted into law:

Montauk Fire Department Corner

Good day and welcome to this month’s edition of the Montauk Fire Department Corner. I trust everyone had a safe and happy Saint Patrick’s Day and that you are getting ready for Easter and Passover.

Our Montauk Fire Department had a busy day on Sat urday, March 8th assisting our brothers and sisters of the East Hampton Fire Department. At approximately 1:30 p.m. we were requested to respond to a structure ire at Park Street in East Hampton. I am happy to re port that the ire was successfully extinguished. At ap proximately 3:20 p.m. another mutual aid request was signaled for our brush truck to respond to, and to standby at the Amagansett Fire De partment in response to the brush ires in the western districts. Ex Springs Fire Chief Peter Grimes was kind enough to load our 9 3 8 brush truck onto his 18 wheeler and to transport it if the need arose. At 6:54 p.m. 9 3 8 was requested to the scene and assisted in putting out the brush ire on Montauk Blvd. I am

again happy to report that this ire was successfully extinguished and that no ire ighters were injured in the process. Thanks again to Peter Grimes for assisting us with his truck, and time, it was a huge help.

On Thursday, March 6th the Montauk Fire Department held training with the Suffolk County Police Department Aviation Unit at our ire house. The training was a refresher course on the protocols in logistics and safety when using the Montauk Fire Department grounds as a landing zone for the Suffolk County Police Medevac helicopter. We are lucky that we do not have to call on the Medevac often, but it is a vital resource for us when needed.

Good news, by all indications the new Southampton/Stony Brook Hospital Emergency facility on Pantigo Place in East Hampton will be opening this spring. This will be a tremendous new asset for the pa tients we transport and a great reduction in emergency transport time for all local Departments’ EMS personnel. We will keep you updated.

Five members of the Montauk Fire Department had a great opportunity and were invited to march in the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade in Dublin, Ireland. Fire Fighter Thea Grenci made the arrangements and Thea, along with Jim Grimes, Rick White, Ed Schnell, and Terry Curley spent Saint Patrick’s Day marching through the streets of Dublin. Thank you for representing us so well.

That’s it for this month’s edition of the Mon tauk Fire Department Corner. Enjoy the upcoming Holidays and to some warmer weather.

ANIMALS OF THE MONTH

REESES: Presenting the Charlie Chaplin of cats, Reeses! Cute as a button, and full of life, this seven-month-old kitten is ready to entertain you! Reeses found his way to ARF through our Operation Cat program and he is eager to be the star of your show. While he tends to be shy at first, it’s all an act as he quickly comes around if you shower him with toys. Add this black and white character to your life and he will fill your world with color!

SCOOBY: ARF’s fiveyear-old house hippo Scooby is the life of the party! Scooby was found as a local stray and then found his way to ARF when nobody claimed him. He has quickly won the hearts of staff and is now ready for his very own home. This gorgeous boy with his white socks loves everyone he meets, though due to his exuberant personality, he should live in a home with children over the age of eight. He wouldn't mind a canine sibling, but they should be of the same size and energy. It won’t take long for you to fall in love with Scooby, why not stop in and meet him today!

Five Star- 7 days ago NEW Vacation · Family

I rarely write reviews, but I felt compelled to share my experience at Tipperary in Montauk because the staff truly deserves recognition. This hotel is the best deal in the area, offering both an unbeatable location and outstanding service.

Tipperary is conveniently located near the docks, making it perfect for anyone looking to enjoy Montauk's coastal charm. The proximity to the water and local attractions adds to the overall appeal of this gem.

What truly sets Tipperary apart, however, is the incredible staff. The receptionist was incredibly kind and welcoming, making check-in a breeze. The housekeeping staff, particularly Jeanette, went above and beyond to ensure our room was spotless and comfortable throughout our stay. Jeanette’s dedication to her work was evident in every detail.

Our stay at Tipperary was a delightful experience, thanks to the exceptional staff and prime location. I highly recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Montauk. You won't be disappointed!

Rooms: 5/5Service: 5/5Location: 5/5 Hotel highlights Quiet, Kid-friendly, Great value!

At The Senior Center

One great thing about being a retired senior is that whether one gains an hour of sleep in the fall, or loses an hour of sleep in the spring, is that it's not as big a deal as when one is young and employed. Most of the time, the only way that I’m sure that it’s a weekday, is because the Senior Center is open for lunch on Mondays through Fridays, so if I’m not going to the Center, then it must be a weekend.

When my husband and I chose Montauk as our per manent residence after retiring, we found ourselves bu sier than ever doing all the things we didn’t have time to do while working. We were blessed to be able to go ish ing, gol ing or skiing anytime we wanted to or being able to take trips to Florida for a month with our German shepherd Benji in our Benjimobile (motorhome) or with

our adopted, black lab from Kauai, Princess Penguin. I took odd jobs such as modeling at the Art Depot, or being an extra in a movie called “The Interpreter” with Academy Award winners, director Jackson Pollack (his last ilm before he passed), Sean Penn and Nicole Kid man. But the job I enjoyed most, was being a tour guide at the Montauk Point Lighthouse. At irst, I was hesitant in accepting it because the work days were Sundays and Mondays. Having worked on weekends for thirty years

at Delta Airlines as a passenger agent, the last thing I wanted to do was to work on weekends. However, the more I thought about it, having ive days off the rest of the week was not too bad. The only request I made to the then Manager Trish, was to be off on Mother’s Day while my Mother, then 95 years young was still active. Mom lived to be 102 years old.

At the Senior Nutrition Center, Executive Director, Anya and her volunteers, were busy redecorating the lunch, exercise and of ice rooms. Volunteers helped take the television and pictures off the walls. Brightly yellow colored walls were repainted with a more soothing to the eyes, baby blue and light green. Paintings were re placed with a more calming effect of views of the beaches of the Atlantic Ocean and several stages of erosions of the Mon tauk Lighthouse. Ex

cess furniture was do nated and book shelves were put up to make more room for the many activities that the Center offers. The holi day tree that’s now kept year round, is now full of St. Patrick’s decor, proudly hand made by the seniors.

Patria Pacis & Bruce Snipas

February birthday babies were Bruce Sni pas and Richard Sex auer. Ricky made a wish on his chocolate cupcake and shared the rest with his peers. Soon the snowbirds from Florida and warmer cities will be returning back to Mon tauk and the town will be hustling and bus tling, the birds will be singing and the daffodils and tulips will be in full bloom. We’re so blessed to live in Montauk. Have a Happy Spring!

The Center is open Monday through Friday from 10am 2pm. Seniors 60 years and over will be served a delicious and well balanced meal for $3, prepared by our Chef Don, Assistant Chef Kaleb and served by hard working volunteers. One can bring a guest or aide for lunch. Please call 631.668.1023 or e mail mtksenctr@gmail.com at least 24 hours in advance. You can ind us on Facebook and Instagram under mtkse niorcenter. For transportation, kindly call 631.324.4443 at least 72 hours in advance.

EARTH DAY...

Continued from Page 9

Conservation Movement, 1850 1920, to learn about earlier milestones in U.S. efforts to preserve and protect the Earth. These efforts include the designation of some of America’s most majestic national parks such as Mt. Rainier, Yosemite, Acadia, and the Grand Canyon in addition to the creation of the National Park Service.

John Burroughs, John Muir, and Luis Agassiz Fuertes (at the outset of his career as the nation’s most notable ornithological painter since Audubon) were among the scientists, naturalists, and artists who produced an album documenting the 1899 Harriman Alaska Expedi tion with hand written notes, typed documents, photographs, draw ings, and maps. As such, they can be considered political and cultural progenitors of Earth Day. See also the Albert K. Fisher Papers—Fisher was a member of the Harriman Expedition. The Harriman Alaska Ex pedition 1899 photographic album, compiled by Fisher, is included in Meeting of Frontiers, an international collaboration devoted to the theme of the exploration and settlement of the American West, the par allel exploration and settlement of Siberia and the Russian Far East, and the meeting of the Russian American frontier in Alaska and the Paci ic Northwest.

VIRGINIA SWEET signs with Curtain Call Records

As of February 17, 2025 Virginia Sweet, one of the Montauk Music Festival’s Fan Favorite Bands, has signed with Cur tain Call Records https://www.curtain callrecords.com/ with distribution through The Orchard/Sony Distribution Company.

I have been a fan of the band since I irst met them in 2019 at the Montauk Music Festival, and was honored to have a conversation with frontman Jason Dove about their new chapter. Being quite busy with shows throughout the states, we spoke as he drove to Florida for a few shows at Daytona Bike Week 2025.

Looking for a little background infor mation, I was treated to an interesting story of how the two “Jasons” met in Min nesota in 2017. Living in Virginia at the

time, Dove had a job lined up in Maryland, but when it fell through, he made a few calls to the company’s main of ice, and ended up with a position repairing guitars for Guitar Center in Minnesota. As a result, he made a last minute move to Minnesota. Later that year he met lead guitarist Jump while repairing his guitar, and accidentally burning a hole in it! Jump replied, “As long as it’s ixed, that’s all that matters.”

Their friendship grew overtime with Jump inviting Dove to a rehearsal, and eventually becoming a road tech for the band. After a while he starting playing acoustic with After Memphis; this was the irst time playing with a band. Jump saw his potential and helped to get the per formance side out of him. He said that overtime he switched to bass, and he’s ac tually only been playing bass now for 4 ½ years.

After restructuring the band during COVID, they re branded to be come Virginia Sweet. You might say, they’re a baby of COVID! With Jason Dove on bass, and now for the irst time on vocals, Jason Jump on lead guitar, and joined by Ricky Parker on drums. We met this new band when they came to town and rocked the 2021 pre MTK Music Festival Marshall Tucker Lighthouse Concert with their remake of Can’t You See! Learning the song to help promote the Marshal Tucker Concert has ended very well for them, as Can’t You See has turned into the lagship song of their sets. From their earliest days, Virginia Sweet has worked tirelessly to blend their dis tinct musical styles, creating a powerful synergy of raw, soulful vocals, electrifying guitar riffs, and a rhythm section that leaves audiences spellbound. They re

leased their debut EP, The Revival, in the summer of 2021, marking the begin ning of their journey to cap tivate listeners far and wide. Asking how they con nected with Curtain Call Records, he said that it stemmed from their rela tionship with James Gilley, owner of ProMotion LLC, out of Knoxville Tennessee, whom they had been working with for about a year and a half. Virginia Sweet has been doubling their shows each year since 2022 when they played only 16, to 35 in 2023, to 81 in 2024. Additionally, they un veiled their latest EP, Virginia Sweet, Vol. 1 in 2024, solidifying their presence in the rock and roll landscape.

I was now curious how they con nected with James Gilley, Dove told a story of arriving in Nashville for a performance, when the show was just 18 hours out it was cancelled. With the help of a friend

from Chicago, they searched for a replacement gig. Al though he didn’t get a replacement show, they established a relationship with a new venue, Iron Forge Brewing in Pi geon Forge, TN and have since played there a few times. They were also told to contact James Gilley, the owner of ProMotion, as he was “the man to know in Knoxville” for booking bands. Although the band put it aside for a few days, the call was made and Dove knew immediately Gilley

was someone they should be working with. In addition to helping to increase their shows, and recording two music videos ProMotion LLC has now put together an epic part nership, with a record deal from Curtain Call Records.

In 2022 they recorded with Multi Platinum Grammy Award Winning Producer Mikal Blue, to put out their ver sion of the Marshall Tucker hit, Can’t You See, in addition to 9 other tracks. Since recording with him, Mikal Blue and colleague Steve Sherr have helped to guide them and have endlessly offered advice as they navigated the indus try, or as Dove put it, “Weed through the noise of the music industry.” He went on to comment that there are

lots of people who try to take advantage and make prom ises to new artists, but they’re often just blowing smoke. This deal with Curtain Call Records and ProMotion LLC will support various aspects of their journey includ ing Major label distribution through The Orchard/Sony, digital promotion, radio play, interviews, playing more festivals, opening slots for national acts, and more! Dove said “Virginia Sweet is no longer moving blindly; we are being guided as we go and bringing things to the next level.” Commenting that Curtain Call Records and Promo tion are “Shining their lights along our pathway, and help ing navigate around the speed bumps, letting us know when to turn, etc.” He went on to explain that this is extremely exciting time for them as an unbeknownst weight is gone now, no matter what happens they will be steered in the right direction. In addition, they will be recording a couple live albums in the next 3 years! Being more of a live band, this is exactly what they are looking for. Reminding me of such bands as The Allman Brothers and Dave Matthews both of whom recorded numerous live albums, they are following in some iconic footsteps.

Entering 2025 with an invigorated passion and drive, Virginia Sweet continues to deliver their infectious energy and captivating sound to stages around the world. With an unrelenting dedication to their craft, the trio is proving themselves to be an unstoppable force in modern rock music, destined to leave an indelible mark wherever their music is heard. We are beyond excited for them and are looking forward to their return to this year’s May Montauk Music Festival. Always entertain ing, personable and extremely talented, Virginia Sweet has also returned to Montauk for the past few summers playing numerous other gigs throughout town. “Montauk is a home away from home for us. With the support of Ken and Sue Giustino, the Montauk Music Festival, and the locals, Montauk has become a launching ground for the band. Through connections made here, our reach has spread across New York and the East Coast.”

tionally, be prepared to offer young people the necessary time and affection, as neglecting this may lead to chal lenges.

Leo (July 23 – August 23) — Make sure to follow through on all projects you start, but avoid overextending yourself. Pay close attention to your coworkers' habits and discuss new strategies when right. If you notice someone being deceitful at work, report it to upper man agement. Take breaks; grab your partner and enjoy a lighthearted movie together.

Virgo (August 24 – September 22) — A fresh career or business opportunity may soon present itself, and it's es sential to seize it. Whether you ind this opportunity or need to create it for yourself, now is the time to take ac tion and pursue your aspirations. Remember, advancing your career and personal relationships hinges on the knowledge you acquire and the ability to communicate effectively. Honing your skills and engaging with others can open doors to new possibilities and enhance your overall success.

Libra (September 23 – October 22) — Your career will soar over the next few weeks, presenting you with end less possibilities as long as you are willing to take risks.

COLLEGE TOURING TIPS & POINTERS

It’s that time of year when high school juniors are seriously considering what col lege they want to attend. When our oldest was a junior in high school, she had a list of schools she wanted to visit. Some were day trips and others in volved going away overnight. We used to take advan tage of any three day holiday weekends because the campuses were open and class activity in session. Or ganized, scheduled orientations are most bene icial. Our trips were family outings because it is worth letting the younger students see what is involved and better understand what an older sibling is going through. If a second child is in high school, taking him or her along can alleviate the need to return to a campus, for their selection. With summer soon approaching, it might be bene icial to check out which colleges offer tours during the summer that include orientation for prospective students or those who might consider submitting an ap plication.

By driving to the various schools we learned how long it took to get there for when the student would come home for holidays. Most colleges do not permit freshman students to have a car on campus the irst year, because of parking limitations. Therefore, the stu dent needs to ind public transportation or car pool arrangements. So one consideration was how conven ient was it for traveling back and forth to school. With a composition notebook in hand, I made notes during each tour and we discussed them on the ride home. Scheduled Open House Orientations are the best to en roll in for complete information about the school. We noticed dormitory room sizes and the distance the stu dent had to walk to class. If she had night classes or wanted to attend a school event, was the dorm room in an isolated area, or close to the main campus? When visiting multiple schools during the course of our search, I found it easier to recall certain aspects by making a few inexpensive purchases at the cam pus bookstore. Many of the universi ties were proud of their Georgian colonial architecture of certain build ings on campus and colorful post cards often depicted this. We found postcards that showed the library building, student senate hall, campus green or their science building and sports arena. On the

back of each card I noted the date of our visit and the time it took to drive to their location. What did we think of the orientation presentation given by the school? Was it professional, organized, and well planned? We looked at the content of the speeches and the quality of the information. The persons giving the speeches represented the school and we scored some schools highly and others very poorly based on the people they selected to represent to potential en rollees. Look at the cafeteria. Is it clean, large enough for the student population and does it offer a well rounded choice of meals for the student? If you survey any college students they will swear that on parent or orientation visiting days the food is “always better than what they normally eat”. This may be the case, but then again, there is nothing like home cooking and a student has to realize this. I have to smile remembering our youngest child’s impression of one school we visited with her much older sister. The school had a breakfast buffet for visiting guests on tour and our grade school daughter enjoyed it immensely. Her input to her sister was to “Come to this school, they make really good French toast!”

Focus on innovation and your artistic abilities. Be pre pared for travel at a moment's notice, as a lexible work routine suits you best. Make room for delays and unex pected changes, and remain open to new ideas.

Scorpio (October 23 – November 21) — You make valuable contributions at work through your creative thinking and ability to adapt to changing circumstances. Your patience is also essential. Although someone in au thority may have high expectations, you consistently rise to the occasion. Romance can lourish in a restaurant set ting, so be sure to take some time to enjoy yourself and have fun.

Sagittarius (November 22 – December 22) — You are incredibly generous, and your great ideas contribute to your popularity. You possess many talents that enable you to offer practical assistance to others. Remember to avoid trying to achieve everything all at once. Start grad ually and gradually build up to your goals.

Capricorn (December 22 – January 20) — Be direct in communicating and ensure you follow through on your commitments. People are observing your actions at the of ice. Your strong leadership qualities inspire others to follow your example. This characteristic will aid you in advancing your career. A last minute change in your rou tine might open up a inancial opportunity.

Actually, the car ride home is the best time to dis cuss all that we heard and saw on each tour. What did you think of the library and the amount of computers available to the students should your own laptop not working? When we broke off into segments, did you like what you heard discussed about the subject you were going to major in? Did the students walking around on campus seem friendly, involved, and happy? Sometimes we went to a campus and the students were so outgoing and open to chat when they saw a group of us following a tour guide. On a few tours the students seemed almost grumpy, sour faced and moody, as if they didn’t want to be there. After hearing the unprofessional presen tation the administration had put together, I could see why they were unhappy. It is also interest or a parent to hear the opinion their student has of the same ob servations. Remember, this is where your child might be at tending and much of what the student is looking for might differ from what we did at their age.

Aquarius (January 21 – February 19) — There's no better moment to craft a heartfelt personal ad or com pose a romantic note for that special someone in your life. This is your opportunity to tap into your creativity and ind a unique and authentic way to convey your feel ings. You will surely capture their attention memorably by expressing yourself thoughtfully and initially. Whether it's a sweet message highlighting shared memories or a playful note showcasing your sense of humor, your words can make a lasting impression.

Pisces (February 20 – March 20) — Before you relo cate or engage in extreme activities, take a moment to re consider any drastic decisions. If you're unsure, it's better to do nothing or to proceed slowly. A strong emo tional connection can make you feel vulnerable, so man aging those feelings by taking your time with a new relationship is essential. A solid foundation at the start can help the relationship develop more smoothly over time. Additionally, consider organizing a small gathering with friends and family.

ESCAPE FROM PARADISE

Beyond the Guidebook: Finding Franco American Soul in Brest

The first glimpse o France's coast line rom our balcony on the ms Rotter dam sent shivers down my spine. Though I'll admit, the brisk 55 degree April wind might have had something to do with that too. A ter crossing the vast Atlantic rom sunny Florida, this was our moment. The massive ship, our

home or the past 9 days, grace ully cut through the steel gray waters as we ap proached Brest, Brittany, in France.

Standing at the rail o our balcony that morning, hot tea warming my hands, I watched the French coast slowly materialize through the morning mist. My husband Marcus, ever the his tory bu , had already enlightened me about Brest's connection to the USA. We had had the option o vis iting the in amous beaches o Nor mandy, but that would have been a whole day bus tour that we were not willing to endure. The clock was ticking toward 10 a.m., and my mind was already racing with thoughts o the history tour we'd booked – a decision that would prove to be an interesting choice.

The transition rom ship to shore was seamless. Brest wel comed us with a thought ul touch – a ree shuttle service that elt less like public transportation and more like a riend giving us a li t into town. The local driver, with his well worn cap and gentle smile, seemed to embody the warmth o this maritime city, de spite the unseasonable chill that had us clutching our light jackets closer.

A ter a couple o hours on our own walking the historic district, we took the courtesy bus back to the ship or lunch, where I savored a bowl o French onion soup at The Lido (when in France, right?), be ore meeting our a ternoon tour guide, Pierre. A pas sionate French historian, he spoke English with the kind o poetic flair that made every word eel important. Pierre’s eyes lit up as he led us to our first stop, the World War I Naval Mon ument perched proudly on the city's ramparts.

"Here," Pierre said, gesturing broadly at the harbor below, "more than 700,000 American soldiers – we called them 'Sammies' – passed through dur ing the Great War." I closed my eyes or

a moment, trying to imagine the scene: young Americans, then probably not much older than my own sons, stepping onto French soil, many or the first time.

Big Tobacco’s customers are dying.

But instead of pulling their products off shelves, tobacco companies are recruiting a new generation of smokers.

They talk about it in their meetings, they spend enormous resources tracking the behaviors and preferences of youth and they use menthol flavors to put their plans into action. Menthol is not just a flavor, it’s a manipulative way for Big Tobacco to make their products smoother and better tasting, so they’re easier for kids to start and harder to quit. And the biggest problem is, it works. Statistics show that the youngest smokers are most likely to use menthol cigarettes.

• The average age of a new smoker is 13 years old

• 54% of youth (ages 12-17) who smoke use menthol cigarettes

• Over 7 out of 10 African American youth who smoke use menthol cigarettes

Dear EarthTalk: What exactly is con gestion pricing as just implemented in New York City and how will it help the environment? Should other cities also adopt this policy?

New York City recently became the first U.S. city to implement congestion pricing, a strategy aimed to reduce tra fic in extreme congested areas by charging drivers a ee during peak hours. This approach not only helps al leviate tra fic but also provides notable environmental benefits.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ABOUT OUR ENVIRONMENT

Congestion pricing seeks to manage demand or road space in busy areas. Drivers pay a ee to enter these zones with electronic tolling systems that track vehicles and collect payments. The revenue generated is usually invested into improving public trans portation and in rastructure. For example, New York plans to issue these unds toward improving its subway system, which millions o residents depend on daily.

Reducing the number o vehicles on the road improves air quality. Fewer cars mean lower greenhouse gas emissions and less air pollution, major contributors to climate change and public health problems. Cleaner air also means ewer respiratory issues or residents mainly in the areas near major tra fic hubs.

Beyond environmental gains, congestion pricing makes cities more tolerable. I tra fic congestion decreases, it leads to aster commute times and less stress or drivers. Streets become quieter and more riendly or pedestrians. Walking and biking are en couraged more i streets are convivial. Cities like London have seen a 30 percent reduc tion in tra fic volumes a ter executing congestion pricing; there have also been crucial improvements in public transit reliability.

Critics o congestion pricing usually point to worries about airness. This is gen erally notable or low income drivers who may struggle to a ord the ees. Small busi nesses that rely on vehicle deliveries also worry about added costs. However, advocates o congestion pricing argue that the advantages outweigh these challenges. Investments in public transit can make commuting more attainable and a ordable or everybody; programs o ering discounts or exemptions can help mitigate the impact on vulnerable groups.

Individuals can play a key role in helping congestion pricing succeed. Reduce your own driving by using public transit, biking or walking when possible. Participate in com munity discussions or campaigns that support congestion pricing. Volunteer or donate to groups advocating or sustainable urban planning. Moreover, you can educate others about the benefits o congestion pricing and how it improves urban li e. Support local policies that und clean energy solutions or improve bike and pedestrian in rastructure. Together, we can create cleaner and less congested urban environments or everyone.

Dear EarthTalk: What are some ways music gear makers are going green?

~ Peter B., Groton, CT

Music gear production, rom collect ing materials, producing gear and packag ing with excessive plastic, has numerous negative environmental e ects. Collecting wood has led to overharvesting at an unsus tainable rate, an increasingly urgent issue or orests and woodlands. Plastic and metal waste have risen, too. These issues have led many music gear makers to implement sus tainable changes.

The good news is that some instrument producers have begun harvesting wood rom dead or dying trees to prevent the over harvesting o rich woodlands, while others have shi ted toward less used “alternative tonewoods” like basswood and kaya. To decrease metal waste in sourcing or strings, makers are beginning to purchase strings in the orm o rods.

Small changes are also happening in the production are. Manu acturers have re placed traditional materials with eco riendly options when produc ing the picks, straps and other accessories. It is now commonplace to find bioplastic or even shell or guitar picks and vegan leather or straps. String company Stringjoy now has a recycling program, en couraging players to mail back old strings to repurpose the material. When packaging manu actured goods, music gear makers have begun using paper tape, boxes and envelopes over the tradi tionally used plastic. Unique innovations have also made packaging greener, such as color coding each guitar string and its packaging to avoid the environmentally harm ul practice o purchasing an entirely new set o guitar strings when only one needs a replacement.

Together these changes have led to a plethora o significant positive outcomes. Increased use o alternative wood sources has caused a notable decrease in pressure on certain wood species com monly used or instruments like mahogany, rosewood and spruce. Moreover, changes made in packaging and material collection have reduced the vast amounts o plastic and metal waste rom entering landfills or oceans. Exemplified by the color coded guitar strings, unique innovations have also made an impact, with the director o product management at music instrument company D’Addario, Brian Vance, commenting that color coding has eliminated total packaging mass by 70 percent.

More can still be done. Companies advocate or government policies cementing environmentally riendly decisions made by man u acturers, or work toward simpler changes by implementing more recycling programs or their customers. Ultimately, strategic e orts have significantly boosted the sustainability o music gear produc tion, proving that these e orts must be continued and expanded.

Well, it was March 14th (3/14). You know, pie ( ) day. I knew I was going to bake a pie, so I put my crusts together, wrapped and refrigerated them. Now all I had to do was igure out what to put into the crust, so off to the store I went to see what they had that I could turn into a pie. Well, they had some good looking straw berries, 2 quarts for $4. The only berry pie I had ever made was blueberry, but I igured the principle would be the same, so I picked up my strawberries, and a lemon, and headed home. Following is what I came up with. I’ve included my pie crust recipe, which I’ve developed over the years, but you can use whatever you like…even store bought crusts…the pie police aren’t going to come knock ing on your door! I hope you enjoy this taste of summer.

Strawberry Pie

CRUSTS:

•3 Cups All purpose Flour

•2 Tbsp. White Sugar

•½ Tsp. Cinnamon (optional)

•1 Tsp. Salt

•¾ Cup Vegetable Shortening

•¼ Cup Unsalted Butter

•½ Cup Ice Water (approximately)

FILLING:

•2 Quarts (about 5 cups) Strawberries, hulled and sliced

•Zest of ½ a Lemon

•1 Tbsp. Lemon Juice

•¼ Cup Cornstarch

•½ Cup Granulated Sugar

•½ Tsp. Cinnamon

•Pinch of Salt

TOPPING:

•1 Egg Beaten

•1 Tbsp. Water

•1 Tsp. White Sugar

INSTRUCTIONS:

Prepare your pie dough. Cut your butter into small 1 cubes and add it to a bowl with the vegetable short ening. Put the bowl with the contents in the freezer for around 30 minutes. Meanwhile, in a large bowl, whisk together the lour, sugar, cinnamon and salt. Using a pastry blender (or a food processor, if you prefer), cut the cold butter and shortening into the lour mixture until you get a pea sized “gravel” tex ture. Add the ice water, a little at a time, stirring be tween additions, until you get a rough dough (I use my ingertips, but you can also do this in a food pro cessor). The amount of water you use will vary de pending on the humidity, temperature, etc., so igure “up to” ½ cup. Once mixed, divide your dough into 2 balls, one slightly larger than the other, and latten each ball slightly into a disc. Wrap each disc in plastic and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.

While your dough is chilling, prepare your illing. Hull 2 and slice your strawberries. In a bowl combine the strawberries, lemon zest, lemon juice, cornstarch, sugar and salt. Gently fold together until the corn starch has dissolved. Set aside for about 30 minutes. Preheat your oven to 400°. Remove the chilled dough 3 from the refrigerator. On a lightly loured surface with a loured rolling pin (or between 2 sheets of plastic), roll out the larger of the 2 discs of dough until a little over an inch larger than the size of you pie pan (about 1/8” thick). Transfer the dough and it it in your pie pan. Fill the pie crust with 4 the strawberry illing. Roll out your second pie 5 crust the same as the irst. This time, using a ruler, you’re going to cut the crust into strips for the lattice top. I use a pizza cutter for this…it makes quick work of it.

strips, forming the lat tice. Fold the edges over and crimp. Whisk together the egg 7 and Tbsp. of water. Brush the crust with the egg mixture. Sprin kle the pie with the Tbsp. of sugar. Place on a baking sheet (I cov ered mine with parch ment paper, to quicken clean up) and bake on the middle rack of your pre heated 400° oven for about 40 minutes, or until the crust is nicely browned and the illing is bubbly. Cool on a wire rack to room temperature. Enjoy! 8

Lay ½ of the strips over the illed pie crust, leaving the 6 same space between them as the width of the strips. Then weave the remain ing strips, one at a time, with the irst set of

There are certain paintings most of us recognize in stantly, whether from school days, news segments or his tory books. Certain styles, techniques or subjects can be attributed to the creator because we know what that par ticular artist favored. It used to be a trend to display large “coffee table” editions of books, whether they were about travel, mythology, history, or paintings done by world fa mous artists. They usually had beautiful photographs of the subject matter and lovely to occasionally browse through. These books often just became decorative table artifacts and rarely opened.

Some world famous paintings are in museums around the world that most people will never get to see, unless heading off to the Louvre in Paris, British Museum in Lon don or the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, to name a few of

the more popular ones. Adults may have an appre ciation for ine art, but it can be a wonderful tradi tion if they pass along this knowledge to young children. For instance, a friend has her children en rolled in a Montessori based preschool and the chil dren are already learning to recognize famous paintings. Each week their teacher hangs up several prints on the bulletin board of a certain artist to show the students the style this person is known to paint. They begin to recognize who was famous for painting ballerinas or western scenery. Additional lessons are created by using art picture lash cards where the child sees a painting and names the artist. Impressive! Think about the world famous artists you may know and whose works you can name.

ESCAPE FROM PARADISE...

Continued from Page 36

The thought gave me goosebumps that had nothing to do with the weather.

The Castle of Brest came next, a fortress that seemed to rise from the very rock itself. Inside the Na tional Naval Museum, I found myself drawn to a deli cate ship model, its intricate rigging a testament to the craftsman's patience. Our guide acknowledged my hus band's interest and shared stories of the French Navy that made these artifacts come to life. Each exhibit felt like a chapter in an ongoing story of friendship be tween our nations, carefully preserved behind glass but somehow still breathing with life.

The journey to Plougastel Daoulas touched me deeply. The Calvary isn't just stone and sculpture, it's a monument to human resilience. Built to mark the end of the bubonic plague in the early 1600s, it later suf fered its own trials during World War II. Our guide told

us about John Davis Skilton, an American Army of icer who couldn't bear to see this treasure de stroyed. The story of how he established the Plougastel Calvary Restoration Fund moved me to tears. Here was a man who, in the midst of war, fought to preserve beauty and history.

The Pink Tower was our inal stop. By then, the wind had picked up, whipping my scarf around

as we stood before this 1927 tribute to American naval forces. It was de stroyed, Pierre explained, but like the friendship be tween our countries, it rose again in 1958. Look ing at the tower against the blue sky, I thought about how some bonds grow stronger through ad versity.

The tour ended in a charming square where modern Brest pulsated with life around us. Local teenagers laughed over cups of steaming choco late at a nearby café, while an elderly couple walked arm in arm, the woman's beret perfectly angled against the wind. The cold that had seemed so chal lenging that morning now felt like part of the expe rience – a reminder that discomfort often accompanies the most meaningful moments in life.

As we returned to ms Rotterdam, I felt a distinct change. This wasn't just another port of call, another check mark on our cruise itinerary. In Brest, we had touched history, felt the pulse of international friend ship, and understood something profound about human connection. The stories of war and peace, destruction and renewal, had woven themselves into my heart, making this chilly April day in Brittany unforgettable.

Marcus squeezed my hand as we walked up the gangway. "Worth braving the cold?", he asked with a knowing smile. I nodded, as I re called Pierre's passionate narratives, the re stored Calvary, and all the layers of history we had peeled back today. Sometimes the most meaningful journeys aren't about the destina tions. They're about the stories we collect along the way, and how they change us.

Until next month from another interesting lo cation!

Yours in travel,

The Montauk Sun ~

The monarch butterfly, known or its awe inspiring migration across North America, has become a symbol o both ecological wonder and environmental decline. Once abundant across the continent, their numbers have plummeted in recent decades, raising concerns about the species’ long term survival.

In 2014, the Center or Biological Diversity (CBD), a leading conservation group, petitioned the U.S. Fish & Wildli e Service (FWS) to list the monarch as “threat ened.” FSW launched a review o the butterfly's status, concluding six years later that listing was warranted al though other species took priority. In 2022, CBD filed a ederal lawsuit and won a settlement calling or the gov ernment to decide whether to list monarchs by late 2024, which FSW did in December, finally granted “threatened” status to the species.

The monarch’s eastern population, which migrates rom the U.S. and Canada to central Mexico or the winter, has experienced a staggering 80 percent drop over the past 20 years, largely due to habitat loss, especially the destruction o milkweed—the sole ood source or mon arch larvae. The widespread use o herbicides and pesti cides kill both milkweed and other pollinator riendly plants. Climate is com pounding the issue by altering the availability o suitable habitats, a ecting migration pat terns. The monarch’s western population mi grates along the U.S. West Coast to winter in Cali ornia, and has also seen a drastic decline. It has not yet been listed as threatened or endan gered by FWS, but the western monarch is still considered to be in serious jeopardy, with some estimates suggesting a 99 percent decline since the 1980s.

Being listed as "threatened" means that while monarchs are not yet in immediate danger o extinction, their populations are at signi icant risk. This status has prompted ederal agencies to prioritize monarch conservation, leading to a variety o initiatives aimed at halt ing or reversing the decline. FWS has created a recovery plan, which includes restoring migratory and breeding habitats, reducing pesti cide use and raising public awareness about the importance o mon archs and pollinators in general.

Despite o ficial recognition o the problem and action, habitat de struction continues at an alarming rate, exacerbated by logging and urban sprawl. In response, conservation and governmental agencies and researchers are all working toward restoring monarch habitats and promoting the planting o milkweed.

Everyone can play a role in helping the monarchs. Readers can help by planting milk weed in your garden, backyard or community space. You can also reduce pesticide use in your yard and choose organic gardening practices. Support organizations working to protect monarch habitats and advocate or policies that protect pollinators and raise awareness about their decline can also create broader change.

Weak Ties

Finding employment, a new relationship, business opportunity, even restaurant reservations, sometimes boils down to who you know, not what you do. All o us have experienced some orm o this, where we are presented with an opportunity simply because o a connection that otherwise would have been missed. This can be positive and rein orce relationships, and it can also cause stress when panic sets in that we do not have the “right” networks or enough access to contacts. Close riendships and direct associations, “strong ties” are certainly help ul, but not mandatory. Surprisingly, it is our “weak ties,” people we know peripherally, through riends o riends, or distantly

through something in common are the most important in li e.

In a small community it helps to be tight knit, and it may be hard to imagine that wider circles o acquaintances would o er such benefits. Ironically, closer, “strong ties” may be a hinderance, as everyone knows the same people and places, is likely hearing the same news simultaneously, and has well known interpersonal similarities. “Weak ties” promote a more diverse port olio o groups o people and allow or greater availability o varied in ormation.

While some may eel hesitant to lean into these relationships or not want to vouch or something or someone they do not know well, they will miss the keys to the kingdom. We will have more achievements and luck by maintaining these weak ties and not underestimating their importance. It is

also healthier and allows or more growth when we put e ort into both or strong and weak ties. One without the other is also incomplete and makes or a less well rounded person, o ering less li e experience. Luckily the east end has both, the com ort o the closer community and the influx o varied visitors that are less well known. Keeping all relationships strong will lead to more success and happier well being.
