Although this car accident scenario may sound severe, these musculoskeletal, visceral and nervous system dysfunctions can occur in varying degrees, which may not show up as pain for years to come. For instance, if you only have slightly restricted cervical joint mobility and respiratory diaphragm breathing issues with increased use of your cervical musculature for breathing, a few years may pass before headaches and neck pain begin, especially if one is in their younger years. What to do now? Physical therapy will need to assist the nervous system with its communication through sensory and neuromotor control activities. One of the first activities is restoring diaphragmatic breathing and body awareness by feeling the inside of the body from the toes and fingers to the head. Individually guided yoga may be added to improve sensorimotor awareness and range of motion. Cranial nerves can be activated through the sensory pathways of sight, hearing, taste, touch, smell and proprioception – progressing to activation of the senses during functional movement activities such as bridging, rolling, squatting and moving from the floor to standing. During these activities, dysfunctional movement patterns are identified and specific core stability and strengthening exercises are added. Manual therapy techniques may also be implemented to mobilize and balance the connective tissue and joints to assist patients who have difficulty feeling their midline. Health in Motion Physical Therapy also offers a variety of manual therapy techniques to assist with balancing the connective tissue and nervous system. Myofascial release mobilizes the connective tissue surrounding the muscles where a previous or current injury occurred. Visceral manipulation

goes deeper into the connective tissue that surrounds the organs that were traumatized. Craniosacral therapy releases tension patterns in the brain, spinal cord and nerve roots. Peripheral nerve glides can be performed to mobilize the nerves off of the spinal cord into the arms and legs. These nerves have a nerve sheath, a tube-like covering, which can become adhered to the nerve following an accident with increased inflammation in the area. Cold laser therapy is also a complementary modality that helps to decrease inflammation and pain, encouraging tissue regeneration in all areas of injury. Yellowstone Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine, Health in Motion’s partner, combines acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine to assist with establishing balance and harmony within the body, promoting the body’s innate ability to heal. Traditional acupuncture is based on ancient Chinese theories of the flow of QI (energy) and Xue (blood) through distinct meridians or pathways associated with specific organ systems. According to ancient theory, acupuncture allows Qi to flow to areas where it is deficient and away from where it is excess, regulating and restoring balance or homeostasis within the body. In Chinese, there is a saying: “There is no pain if there is free flow; if there is pain, there is no free flow.” Health in Motion Physical Therapy and Yellowstone Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine will help you get back on track after an accident, injury or illness. Although the body has an innate ability to heal itself, sometimes it needs some help. Health in Motion Physical Therapy and Yellowstone Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine have been locally owned health partners since 1999.

Massage by Christina Skarka

Many of us are familiar with the Hippocratic Oath, which contains those famous words, “to do no harm,” though not as many are familiar with his reference to massage: “The physician must be experienced in many things, but assuredly also in rubbing.” According to Hippocrates, rubbing, or massage, was an essential element of health. In this article, my goal is to address only a few ideas about massage. 30 - Gallatin Valley Whole Health • 2013

bifocal, trifocal and progressive options, and specializations, like scratch resistant coating or Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) tint. Not all lens styles, tints and materials are right for everyone or every prescription. In addition to the aforementioned, Advanced EyeCare offers several tinting/coating options and a range of stateof-the-art lens styles. • Anti-Reflective Coating, which increases light transmission through the lenses to 99.5%, making it easier to see, particularly when viewing computer screens and driving at night. • Photochromic Lenses darken when exposed to UV rays. There are a variety of customizable photochromic options. Some lenses darken only in direct sunlight, while others darken in little or no direct light. Some are designed to darken while you’re in the car to reduce road glare while you’re driving. You can even choose the color of the tint. • Polarized Lenses eliminate almost all glare, reduce eyestrain and increase visibility; they are the most effective way to reduce glare, providing a night and day difference. • Specialty Lenses provide those “different strokes for different folks.” No matter what your particular need, there’s probably a specialty lens designed for you. • High Index (HI) Lenses are so named because the materials from which they are made have a higher index of light refraction. Much thinner and lighter, HI lenses can do the same job that glass or CR-39 does

without the “soda bottle” look. Strong and light, polycarbonate is the most popular HI plastic. Numbers classifies other HI materials: the higher the number, the thinner and lighter the lens. The lower numbers (such as 1.54, 1.56 and 1.57), classified as mid-index lenses, are thinner than glass and nearly as strong as CR-39. HI lenses (such as 1.66, 1.74 and 1.9) are much thinner than regular glass or plastic. • High-Definition (HD) Lenses correct higher-order (due to the optical characteristics of your eyes or the optical limitations of conventional eyeglass lenses) aberrations to provide sharper vision and reduce nighttime glare. Customizable and individualized as lenses have never been before, HD lenses quite literally reflect the minutiae of contours and characteristics for each pair of eyes and each patient’s needs. Many brands of HD lenses are available, including high-index and progressive versions. HD lenses are manufactured through free-form or wavefront technology. Free-form, or digital, HD lenses are the most popular type. The term “free-form” refers to an advanced manufacturing process that reduces

higher-order aberrations with fabrication optimized by computercontrolled surfacing equipment that is much more precise than conventional tools. The free-form lens fabrication process can also account for how the lenses are positioned in front of the wearer’s yes when in the eyeglass frame, the angle between the eye and the back surface of the lens in different gaze positions, the frame size, and the position of the wearer’s pupil within the frame outline. Even more customized than the freeform variety, wavefront HD lenses are created utilizing the same optics measurement technology employed in wavefront-guided LASIK eye surgery. These measurements then drive a computer-controlled process that creates perfectly customized lenses. Both free-form and wavefront HD lenses provide sharper image quality, better peripheral vision, improved contrast sensitivity and decreased glare at night. Advanced EyeCare Associates offers lifetime frame maintenance, adjustments, nose pad replacement, ultrasonic cleanings and a one-year warranty on most frames and spectacle lenses. No matter which frame or lens you choose, the opticians at Advanced EyeCare will ensure the perfect fit for your face, your lifestyle and, most importantly, your vision. prevent swelling. Nasal steroids are safe for ages 2 and up often for both intermittent and persistent allergy. When medications fail, we must look at the anatomy, the “plumbing”, to find the source of the problem. A deviated septum is a condition where the “common wall” between the two nasal cavities is off-center and leans to one side- this causes one nasal cavity to become more narrow. Unfortunately, this condition does not respond to medication and can lead to other issues such as recurrent nose bleeding. Fortunately, septoplasty, the procedure to straighten a deviated septum, is a straightforward, minimallyinvasive, 45 minute procedure, done under general anesthesia which involves no facial swelling or bruising, nasal packing, or external incisions.

turbinate submucous resection involves removing bulky turbinate tissue from the inside of the turbinate through a 5 mm incision inside the nose. Children with nasal obstruction require an evaluation of the adenoids as well as the inferior

turbinates. The adenoids can be examined in the office without sedation using a thin fiberoptic camera which affords us an excellent view of the adenoids in the nasopharynx. Alternatively, a lateral neck X-ray can often reveal large adenoids. Large adenoids, also known as adenoid hypertrophy, can sometimes be “shrunk” with nasal steroids. When medicine is ineffective, adenoid tissue removal, also known as an adenoidectomy, is a minimallyinvasive 10 min procedure that is performed under general anesthesia.

With so many modern, minimally-invasive medications and procedures, no one should have to suffer from a “blocked” nose again! For more information call, 406-556-9798 or find us on the internet, www.BridgerENT.com

The inferior turbinates can become misshapen as well. This condition, called inferior turbinate hypertrophy, causes nasal obstruction that is often variably present and often worse when laying down. Caused by excessive soft tissue and bone growth, inferior turbinate hypertrophy can often be lessened with nasal steroids. However, when these fail provide relief, surgery offers an excellent option. Often combined with septoplasty, endoscopic inferior Gallatin Valley Whole Health • 2013 • 59
