June 28: Josh Hoyer and Soul Colossal Sponsored by First Security Bank Josh Hoyer & Soul Colossal’s combination of soul, funk and R&B is in a word, electric. Best displayed in their high-energy live show, the blend of Hoyer’s honest lyrics and his soulful vocals merge with his top-notch band to create an undeniable chemistry. “If James Brown and Otis Redding had a love child, it would be Josh Hoyer. The Lincoln, Nebraska, soul shouter, and his band of merry soulsters, Soul Colossal, deliver a sound so big, so funky, so wring-the-sweat-out-of-you energetic that it reaches through the speakers and shakes you until you start moving to its groove.” – No Depression

July 5: Mandolin Orange

with special guest Joe Pug Sponsored by Bozeman Health Big Sky Medical Center

Mandolin Orange released their fifth studio album, Blindfaller, in late 2016 and upon its release the album received chart placement on four different Billboard charts, including a #3 spot on Billboard’s Bluegrass Album chart, and was ultimately named one of Rolling Stone’s 40 Best Country Albums of 2016. Major festival and concert appearances have included Austin City Limits, Bonnaroo, Newport Folk Festival, Forecastle Festival, Pickathon, Fayetteville Roots, Edmonton Folk Festival, Merlefest, Telluride Bluegrass Festival and the Vancouver Folk Music Festival. Joe Pug became a folk sensation in the early 2010s, dropping out of college, working as a carpenter in Chicago, and playing music after hours. He has played Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, and the Newport Folk Festival. Then came a creative crisis and a long layoff, but Joe has back in a big way with his latest album, “Windfall.”

July 12: Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds Sponsored by Spanish Peaks Community Foundation In the years since forming, Sister Sparrow and the Dirty Birds have performed more than 700 shows and made their national TV debut on NBC’s Today Show. They’ve released three full-length studio albums, including their most recent studio pass, the acclaimed The Weather Below. “They may be from Brooklyn, but the fiery brass- and gospel-infused funk emanating from Sister Sparrow & The Dirty Birds is rooted in Memphis soul,” writes the LA Times. “Their rhythmic wheelhouse combines big-city grit and down-home sweetness with a little bit of Americana twang.” The band has shared the stage with Gov’t Mule, Dr. John, Trombone Shorty, the Avett Brothers, and Galactic and has turned audiences into believers through appearances on the festival circuit at Bonnaroo, Firefly, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, Bottle Rock, Forecastle and others. July 19: Polyrhythmics Sponsored by Big Sky Resort Rich with bold brass and hypnotic percussion, Polyrhythmics’ latest album, Caldera, showcases the instrumental eight-piece’s impossibly tight grooves and virtuosic musicianship as they tear through a singular blend of funk, soul, psychedelic rock, R&B, progressive jazz, and Afrobeat. Calling to mind everything from Antibalas and the Dap-Kings to The Meters and Fela Kuti, it’s without a doubt their strongest work to date, merging the infectious power of their live show with a sleek and nuanced studio sophistication. The band has been invited to perform live on influential Seattle NPR station KEXP, and has shared bills with everyone from Snarky Puppy to Booker T, and played massive festival stages including Bumbershoot, High Sierra, and the Vancouver International Jazz Festival.

July 26: Shovels and Rope Sponsored by Big Sky PBR Shovels & Rope, a Charleston two-piece band comprised of Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst, doesn’t exactly fit into a standard genre mold. A mix of folk, rock and country, the focus of Shovels & Rope isn’t to adhere to one sound; rather, the duo’s intent is to create a quality sound regardless of genre. The two are able to create this blend of sound using just two worn guitars, a kick drum, a snare, some tambourines, harmonicas and the occasional keyboard. The duo has won two Americana Music Awards for Song of the Year (“Birmingham”) and Emerging Artist of the Year.

August 2: Cordovas Sponsored by Big Sky Vacation Rentals Already cult favorites in Nashville, Cordovas have built honorary home bases across the globe, thanks to recurring shows in Todos Santos, Mexico – where ringleader Joe Firstman runs the yearly Tropic of Cancer Concert Series – and a touring schedule that recently included headlining gigs in Sweden and a stateside run alongside the Turnpike Troubadours. The band’s sound, though, is decidedly American. Caught halfway between Duane Allman’s Telecaster twang, the Dead’s hazy harmonies and the stoned swoon of California’s folk-rock heyday, Cordovas wring new life from older influences, hoisting their freak flag high on their upcoming album, That Santa Fe Channel. Named one of “10 New Country Artists That You Need to Know” by Rolling Stone in 2017.

August 9: The Elders Sponsored by RMR Group

The Elders were founded in 1998 by six individuals with a passion for music rooted in Americana and Celtic folk rock. From the beginning The Elders seemed to be channeling something ancient and enduring – something unaffected by fads, trends and the giant maw of mind-numbing commercialism. Their ability to bring together the art of storytelling with elements both musically progressive and rooted in tradition, has won them a broad international fan base, as well as critical acclaim in numerous publications such as PASTE Magazine, Folk & Acoustic Music Exchange, Music Row Magazine, Goldmine Magazine, TRAD Magazine (France), Chicago Sun-Times, Kansas City Star and more. “Thrilling, propulsive, fantastic Celtic-pop. The Elders are a band to shout from the rooftops about.” Robert Oermann, Music Row Magazine.

August 16: Jeff Austin Band with opening band Two Bit Franks Sponsored by Moonlight Basin

The career of Colorado-based artist Jeff Austin has already seen him break through jam and bluegrass scenes (as co-founder of the legendary Yonder Mountain String Band), play stages from The Fillmore Auditorium to Red Rocks Amphitheater, and outdoor events like Telluride Bluegrass Festival and Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival, among many others. But with the launch of his solo career in 2014, Austin is now building on the foundations of previous ventures while honing his own sound and charting new courses. “I’ve learned a lot from the people I’ve played with,” says Austin who has shared stages with such luminaries as Del McCoury, Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush, Earle Scruggs, Jon Fishman, and Phil Lesh. Although there is a strong undercurrent of momentum and innovation that course through Austin’s newest project, there is Big Sky Travel Shoppe also a connection to the past with the bandleader revisiting selections from his Located at the Highway 191 back catalog. Offerings include “Dawn’s and Spur Road intersection Early Light,” “Snow in the Pines,” and others dating back to the 1990s. What matters, Austin points out, is that those songs evoke strong emotional responses GAS both from the audience and himself. BEER Played by this new ensemble, those SLIDER’S DELI songs feel revitalized and fresh. Featuring some of the finest Bluegrass musicians in Montana, Two Bit Franks are John Lowell, Tom Murphy, Russ Smith, Jeff Shouse and Kevin Fabozzi. Creative solos, driving rhythm, hot vocals and interesting arrangements have pleased listeners at the Grand Targhee Bluegrass Festival, Big Sky’s Big Grass Bluegrass Festival, Missoula’s River City Roots Festival, and the Livingston Summerfest and many more.

Over the past few years, The Dustbowl Revival has been making a name for itself with a vibrant mix of vintage Americana sounds. Critics have proclaimed that this eclectic eight-piece “would have sounded utterly at home within the hallowed confines of Preservation Hall in New Orleans’ French Quarter” (Los Angeles Times) and their “upbeat, old-school, All-American sonic safaris exemplify everything shows should be: hot, spontaneous, engaging and, best of all, a pleasure to hear” (L.A.
