Virginia City: A City Steeped in History Celebrating its 150th year, Virginia City is Montana as it was when the West was won and claims were staked. Steeped in history and things that go bump in the night, Virginia City provides a great fall/ early winter day trip from Big Sky, whether for Halloween celebrations and late-season farmers’ markets or the annual Splendid Feast, held each December at the Elling House. The county seat of Madison County, Virginia City and the surrounding area was designated a Historic Landmark in 1961, thanks to the townspeople’s hard work and renovations. Telephone service was established with 28 telephones in 1902; cellular service finally arrived in June of 2010. No more colorful pioneer mining camp ever existed. Dramatic tales of the early days in this vicinity are numerous. With rich placer diggings discovered in Alder Gulch in the spring of 1863, the stampede of gold seekers and their parasites was on! Sluices soon lined the gulch and various "cities" burst forth as trading and amusement centers for free-handed miners. Virginia City, the best known of these and the sole survivor, became

the Capitol of the Territory. Walking along the boardwalks of Virginia City, visitors can imagine what life was like in this vibrant ghost town frozen in time. Gold was first struck in Alder Gulch 150 years ago. When the gold ran out, there was still enough left to keep homes and businesses occupied, but not enough to remodel the buildings. So, it froze and now represents the whole Victorian era. What better time than Halloween to seek out visions of what once was, to get a glimpse of the souls of early miners that are believed to roam the City streets at night. It is believed that some of the early miners are still roaming the streets at night. One might even find the spirit of American frontierswoman Calamity Jane, who resided in Virginia City for a short time. On October 25th and 26th, kids and kids-at-heart can celebrate Halloween, Nevada City style with a non-scary zone, a scary zone and a haunted trail. Marilyn Ross will also give ghost tours during the two-day event.

The Bridger Raptor Festival

By Elizabeth Severn-Eriksson concentrations of Golden Eagles (long-term average annual count of more than 1,500 birds), The Bridger flyway, a component of the regional Rocky Mountain Flyway, also attracts many other migrating raptors. 18 species have been recorded since HawkWatch International began monitoring the flight in 1991. Overall, combined-species counts typically range between 2,000 and 3,500 migrants per fall season.

Unfortunately by the time this edition of the Monthly comes out, the annual Bridger Raptor Festival will have already taken place this year. However, it’s an incredible festival that takes place every year, so maybe if you’ve never attended, having read this will make you want to go next year. In the late 1970s the Bridger Ridge was realized as a major migratory flyway for raptors when Fred Tilly discovered it and spent four years counting raptors. In 1991 Hawkwatch International investigated the site while looking to create a series of monitoring stations in the western part of the country. That same year, with the help of the Gallatin National Forest and Bridger Bowl Ski Area, the Bridger Bowl helicopter platform was established as one of sixteen Rocky Mountain raptor monitoring sites. More golden eagles had been documented here than any other site in the country. The Bridger flight is the largest known concentration of migratory Golden Eagles in the U.S. Sixteen other species of raptors are also counted that utilize the Bridger Bowl range as a migratory flyway through the Rocky Mountains each fall.

Besides Golden Eagles, the other most commonly recorded migrants in the Bridgers include Sharp-shinned Hawks (average count 332), Cooper's Hawks (164), Red-tailed Hawks (102), Bald Eagles (81), American Kestrels (77), Northern Harriers (49), Northern Goshawks (36) and Rough-legged Hawks (34). Other species seen every year in smaller numbers include the Osprey, Broad-winged Hawk, Merlin, Prairie Falcon, and Peregrine Falcon, with Swainson's and Ferruginous Hawks also seen most years.

Hoping to create an appreciation for this migration, with the help of Deb Ritchie of the Montana Watchable Wildlife program, the assistance of Ron Krager, a biologist for the USFS, and the help of many others, the first eagle watching field trip was led in October of 1993. That first year about 40 people participated in the hike. The following year about 40 car loads of people attended, with many other people taking the trip on their own throughout the week. In the summer of 1995, a Bridger Bowl Area Interpretive plan was first drafted with help from the Watchable Wildlife Program of Fish Wildlife and Parks, the Gallatin National Forrest and Bridger Bowl. These efforts produced the first two of several interpretive panels that are currently displayed in the Bridger Bowl base area. After two more seasons of eagle watching field trips, a group consisting of Ron Krager (USFS), Bettsy Spettigue (MWW), Chad Moore (MSU grad student) Mike Myers (MSU), Bobby Geise (RRC- formerly Big Sky Wildcare), Dennis

Flath and Doug Wales (Bridger Bowl) met to discuss the future of raptor watching at Bridger Bowl. 1996 was the first year for the Bridger Raptor Festival, and the first event offering more than just guided field trips. The Festival was a two day program at Bridger Bowl and included lectures and presentations on raptor identification, ecology and migration of all 17 different species. The attendance was incredible with approximately 1000 people over the weekend event. Hundreds of people hiked to the ridge to observe the migration. Currently the Bridger Raptor Festival is a weekend program, with events starting Friday evening at the Museum of the Rockies with a Keynote Address. Over the next two days, there are hikes, displays, lectures, adult and kid activities and live bird presentations at the Bridger Bowl Ski Area. Currently attendees number over 4,000 people, and hundreds of people hike to the ridge each year. While the Bridger Mountains fall raptor migration is particularly noteworthy for large

Hawkwatch International observers monitor the Bridger migration daily from the end of August through the end of October each year. October is the peak activity period for both Golden and Bald Eagles, with Rough-legged Hawk activity mostly occurring in the latter half of October. Ospreys, Broad-winged Hawks, and Swainson's Hawks generally migrate in September. For most other species, activity begins to accelerate in mid-September and peaks during the last 10 days of September and first 10 days of October. Late September and early October are the most productive times for visiting the site to see many species, with mid-October the best time for seeing many eagles. Don’t miss this fascinating event next year, and participate in viewing some incredible raptor migrations. The Bridger Raptor Festival is free to the public. Other activities include wildlife films, nature walks and talks, education and entertainment programs for people of all ages. BIG SKY RESORT

Big Jump For Big Sky Resort Ranked 12th In Top 30

Glennis Indreland photo

Big Sky, Mont. (September 20, 2013) – Big Sky Resort makes a big leap in Ski Magazine’s 22nd annual Reader Resort Survey, with a ranking of 12th in the Top 30 Resorts in the West. The consistent average snowfall of 400 inches and virtual non-existent lift lines has pushed Big Sky Resort to beat out many Colorado and Utah resorts. One reader was quoted, “the terrain is killer, value is unbelievable compared to Colorado or Utah and every resort should have the pool-size hot tub the Summit Hotel has.” The readers of Ski Magazine rank resorts in 20 different categories, then Ski Magazine calculates those results determining the resorts placement into the top 30 resorts in the west. Of those 20 different categories, Big Sky Resort ranked in the top 10 for Overall Satisfaction (7th), Scenery (8th), Variety (3th), and Challenge (5th). Other notable category rankings for Big Sky were Lodging, Snow, Grooming, Lifts, Service, and Character. “Big Sky made the single biggest jump in the rankings this year (+11). With four Top 10 finishes. And 7th in Overall Satisfaction is great” said Ski Magazine’s managing editor, Greg DiTrinco. Big Sky Resort was ranked 23rd in the 2013 Reader Resort Survey. This big jump into the teens is a testament to the Resort’s continued efforts to create exceptional experiences for their guests. “It’s wonderful to be included in the top 30 resorts in the west” said Sheila Chapman, Public Relations Manager at Big Sky Resort, “and fantastic to have been voted 12th in the country.” Big Sky Resort will be opening for the 2013-2014 winter season on November 28, 2013. For more information about Big Sky Resort, visit bigskyresort.com. Ski Magazine’s 22nd annual Reader Resort Survey will come out in the October issue.

Big Sky Resort Voted

Best In The West

Big Sky, Mont. (August 20, 2013) – Big Sky Resort will be recognized as one of the 50 “Best in the West” for meeting properties by Meeting Focus magazine in the western region in the upcoming September issue. Meetings Focus magazine polls its readers on what hotels and resorts delivered superlative meeting experience and this marks the 12th year Big Sky Resort has been awarded the “Best in the West”. Properties are judged on the quality of meeting space, guest rooms, guest services and amenities, food and beverage service, high-tech services and equipment, recreational facilities and activities, the efficiency and helpfulness of staff, and overall value and experience. 18 miles from Yellowstone National Park’s border, Big Sky Sky has 55,000 square feet of meeting and function space, featuring the Yellowstone Conference Center, and is one of the largest facilities in the state. The versatile meeting facilities include the new Lone Peak Pavilion outdoor reception venue and lodging accommodations from value to luxury for up to 2,000 guests. Big Sky prides itself in providing productive meetings, scheduling efficiency, festive banquets and, most importantly, satisfied attendees. Big Sky’s meeting and convention clientele have been coming back to Big Sky Resort for up to 35 years, speaking volumes to the high level of consistent excellent service. That level of quality was suitable to host the President and Vice President of the United States in 2009 and 2010 respectively. Encouraging networking and making event schedules efficient, the tight knit Mountain Village at Big Sky Resort offers team building activities including a high ropes course, ziplines, paintball, skeet shooting, scenic lift, and more. The 18-hole Arnold Palmer designed golf course is a short ride to the Meadow Village. The village elevation is 7,500 feet and a tram ride on Lone Peak Expedition: Tram to the Top will land you at 11,166 feet to the summit of Lone Mountain. In winter, Big Sky is a premier ski destination, offering The Biggest Skiing in America with more than 5,500 acres of interconnected terrain and 4,350 vertical feet, and awarded the 2013 Best Overall Resort by OnTheSnow.com’s Visitors’ Choice Awards.
