The Splendor of Fall

On the heels of a very busy summer, comes the welcome fall, full of pumpkin spice lattes, aspen leaves changing color, elk bugling and a quieter season. No matter who you talk to in the area, it seems like everyone had the best summer ever, with regard to business. The farmer’s markets and weekly concerts made it a funfilled summer that went way too fast for most. Now, many of the tourists have gone home to get their kids back in school and summer vacations have come to an end. It’s a wonderful time of year to take a breath and take stock of things. While work and school still occupy a great deal of our time, there is space not available during the summer months to enjoy fall happenings. Sports at Ophir are a fun way to spend an afternoon. Six-man football games are an enjoyable pastime – not much signifies the season better than sitting at a football game, bundled up, cheering for your favorite football team with a cuppa joe (or hot chocolate). And don’t forget the MSU Bobcats in Bozeman either! Other sports events include volleyball and soccer and, soon enough, boys’ basketball will begin. Fun day- or two-day trips abound at this time of year as well. Yellowstone National Park can’t be beat in the fall months. Quieter this time of year, the Park is still replete with wildlife and painted in radiant color. Do pay attention to road closures and watch out for bad weather, however, and keep in mind that Beartooth Highway and Dunraven Pass (Tower to Canyon) close on October 15th and all park roads close to the public at 8AM on November 4th (except from the North Entrance to Upper Mammoth Terrace and Mammoth via Tower Junction to Northeast Entrance). A great fall destination as well, Jackson

Page 12

Big Sky Resort Hole provides breathtaking fall colors, thanks to the abundant deciduous trees. Chico Hot Springs is always fun for a day of soaking and culinary delight, whether you choose to eat at the grill or in the dining room. Overnights here are also memorable and fall specials are regularly advertised. Hunters are excitedly gearing up for what they hope to be a successful season. The hiking and biking are also fun at this time of year, but wear bright colors and be aware of your surroundings. Hunters abound, as do bears in hyperphagia that are trying to pack on weight before hibernation. November tends to be that month when, in all hopes, the snow is flying. It is also a time when we are in limbo as far as outdoor activities are concerned. You can no longer do the summer and fall activities, but you can’t yet engage in the winter activities, as, usually, not enough snow has fallen. Enjoy the rest and relaxation. Winter will soon be here – settled in for a good four months – and we will all be busy skiing every weekend and every other chance we get. So, for now, enjoy fall and all this wonderful time of year brings. Partake in those fall pastimes and enjoy the cool, crisp weather (and increasingly biting mornings, a harbinger of winter). Hike, bike, fish, jump in the leaves, listen to the elk bugle, take day trips to different places. Drink apple cider and cozy up in front of a fire at night. Winter will soon be here.

BSCC News Greetings! As summer winds down we want to take the time to update you on several exciting projects taking place and thank you for your support.

South Fork Trail System The BSCC is pleased to announce that we have received nearly 8 miles of trail easements for the benefit and use of the public. The easements were donated by the Simkins family, who had the foresight to include trail planning early in their land development process and land disposition over the years. We mapped these easements during the summer and we are currently working on a Request for Proposal for building strategic sections of the trail. The trails generally connect the Town Center to Ousel Falls on the south side of the South Fork River and include various loops on more gentle terrain than is often found in Big Sky. This will be a huge benefit for locals and tourists alike. Mapping our Mountain to Meadow Trail We continue to work hard at mapping and determining the correct alignment for the Mountain to Meadow trail which will connect the Resorts to the community via a footpath. The mapping work is taking place this fall and we hope to begin work on securing easements throughout the winter. Park Improvements The BSCC is going vertical! We are currently under construction on a pavilion in the community park between the softball fields. The pavilion includes restroom facilities, a concession area and a large , overhang area for picnic tables and relief from the sun on those hot summer days! Thank you to Resort Tax and BSCC Gala attendees for helping us make this building a reality! You may have noticed that we added two climbing boulders to the boulder garden in the park, along with landscaping, sod, irrigation and pathways . Thank you to Rotary Club of Big Sky and Resort Tax for your help with this project. Gala Recap We had another successful Gala on the 27th of July this year! The Gala sold out quickly and attendees enjoyed a delicious dinner and fine wines along with an excellent band. Thank you to all who came out to support this great event! Congratulations to Krista Mach BSCC's first Volunteer of the Year. Krista spends countless hours making BSCC a better organization by chairing the Parks Committee, being a Softball board member, helping BSCC with administrative tasks, and more. Thank you Krista! We couldn't do it without you! Wmpac Debut Season Planned World-Class Entertainment for New Venue With the construction of Big Sky's first performing art center complete, the exciting work of creating a debut season for the stateof-the-art facility is well underway for Warren Miller Artistic Director John Zirkle. The mission: Presenting world class evening offerings from December through April that will match the world class ski options that Big Sky residents and guests have come to expect.” Although Zirkle isn’t releasing the exact details of the season yet, which will be announced in early November, he says: “What we are presenting is a truly original, responsive season of events that I believe will help foster the growth of our community of confident performers and inspired audiences.” The season will include ten acts, including several which are cooperative ventures with The Arts Council of Big Sky. The line-up is diverse, a mix of movement, music, theater and spoken word. It is, Zirkle says, “adventurous programming” which nonetheless will appeal to all. “I think it is the responsibility of any performing arts venue to push the boundaries of what performing arts means,” says Zirkle, “which doesn’t mean these acts are inaccessible—I anticipate much of our programming to find a significant family audience.”

The internationally known acts include performing companies from Minneapolis, Chicago, New York and abroad. Needless to say, says Zirkle, ‘this kind of ambitious line up is not inexpensive.” That’s why a significant part of Zirkle’s job is not just to devise an interesting, inspiring season but also to find a way to fund it outside of simple ticket sales. “It almost goes without saying that the cost of bringing in internationally recognized artists is not insignificant,” says Zirkle. Sponsorship opportunities begin at $5,000, and Zirkle is

hoping the enthusiasm has shown thus far for building WMPAC will continue to build its programming. “Sponsorships will directly impact ticket prices and help make all of the events accessible to everyone in the community,” says Zirkle. To find out more about sponsorship opportunities, reach out to Zirkle at Johnzirkle@ gmail.com. One immediate perk of sponsorship: Some distinct hints about exactly what fantastic acts will be here next winter.
