Welcome / Chairman’s Message

A

s we look forward to Christmas and the New Year, I am aware that many Probus Clubs are currently enjoying Christmas celebrations and sharing the spirit of the season. It is a time also to recall all the happy times we have been able to share with others in our Probus Clubs during the year. In my mind, Probus is about community and companionship. Particularly at Christmas, many of us come together with our extended families, catch up with the year’s events, see how our grandchildren have grown during the year, share gifts, and reminisce about Christmases in the past. But not all of us are able to be with family at this time. This is where Probus is so important for many people; it allows us to be part of a welcoming community and to have wonderful companionship during this period of the year. As I move around Probus Clubs, I hear so many stories about people who have gained so much from their Club membership of our wonderful organisation. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the members who have taken on leadership positions in their Club, not only as members of their committee, but also those who organise interest groups, who are greeters at meetings or who organise the morning teas; there are so many roles which go towards making a successful Probus Club. Also, we have many others who give up their time, members who lead Probus Associations, or act as Rotary Probus District Chairs, Probus District Chairs, or Ambassadors, all working together to help Clubs grow. December 5 this year is International Volunteer Day, and I would like to thank each of you for your work in making Probus such a successful organisation. Our Probus Clubs are an extremely important part of our local communities. I was reminded of this recently when I attended a lunchtime get-together of four Probus Clubs in northern Victoria. One of the Clubs operated in a town

where there was extensive flooding about twelve months ago, and recovery is still underway. Several members from that Club recalled how important it was to belong to an organisation like Probus where members were able to support each other in times of crisis. This example reminds me how important it is for our Clubs to continue to prosper and provide community and companionship into the future. We live in a world where family life is changing, and where loneliness has never been so widespread. I believe that as we head into the New Year, we should be mindful of the benefits we bring to our local communities, and we also need to look forward so that our Clubs are continuing to thrive and provide the same benefits in five- or ten-years’ time. On behalf of my fellow Directors, I am sending my warmest wishes your way. May the holiday season bring you good cheer and health throughout the coming year. Merry Christmas and a happy new year!

Health /Why does life get more difficult with age?

Why does life get more difficult with age?

Y

ou will have heard the old saying: “If you don’t use it, you lose it!” No truer statement could be made. Sadly, from around the age of 35 we are fighting an uphill battle. This is why professional athletes retire early, as they physically cannot keep up with their younger competitors. We naturally decline with age and with this we gradually lose muscle strength & mass (sarcopenia) and bone density decreases (osteoporosis). According to The Australian Medical Association, GPs have been asked to be more vigilant in their search for sarcopenia saying it is greatly underrecognised despite its “huge influence and importance” for a range of diseases including type 2 diabetes. There is a steady rise in the proportion of men and women who are overweight or obese. This peaks between ages 45-64 where it is estimated 50 per cent of men and 36 per cent of women are defined as overweight, and 25 per cent of both men and women can be defined as obese. As the population ages, caloric requirements generally drop as does participation in high impact physical activity (due to sarcopenia, a decline in muscle mass and strength). Nutrition and lifestyle education should continue through the lifecycle to help individuals to enjoy, maintain or improve their quality of life at any age. Today with information technology, computers, mobile phones, social media, artificial intelligence, everything is faster, easier, and more accessible. Therefore, less movement is

required to get things done. The future health of the population looks grim as all this breeds a lazier society and with obesity, mental health and many more diseases on the rise, that uphill battle is looking steeper. However, on the positive side, all this brings more advances in preventative medicine and the management of chronic disease. We can expect to live well into our retirement as we figure out ways to combat ageing and live longer and more healthily. But what is quantity without quality? • • • • •

Fast processed foods = less nutrition. Less nutrition = poor health and wellbeing. Poor health and wellbeing = more disease and mental health issues. Fast internet services and games = Less physical play and movement. Less physical play and movement = less impact on our muscles, joints, and bones. Less impact on muscles, joints, and bones = wastage of these vital structures within our bodies.

Wastage of these vital structures within our bodies = decreased strength, mobility and balance, more falls and a poorer quality of life.

Our health is our biggest wealth and when we are weakened with disease and mental health issues, time is not necessarily our friend and that hill becomes a long and deceptive one. Artificial joints will not stop our muscles from wasting. Pills and medication will not stop us from falling over and possibly breaking our bones. So, to avoid losing it we must use our body more. Do not reach for those fast foods but replenish your bodies with clean, healthy and fresh food. Use your bigger muscles more. Exercise daily for a minimum of 20 minutes. Go for a walk, get out into the outdoors. Keep technology to a minimum. Seek holistic modalities like massage to help your joints stay healthy. Lift weights to build and retain your muscles and bones. Stay social, keep having fun and spend more time with friends and loved ones. Look for a more natural and healing approach to stay on top of your health and wellbeing and let us work towards a longer quality of life and independence together.

cardiac emotions STUDY

Many cardiac patients experience changes in their mood and difficulty in resuming their usual activities folllowing their heart event.

what is the cardiac emotions study? The Cardiac Emotions Study is interested in learning more about the emotional difficulties involved in people living with cardiac conditions. With this knowledge, we can assist patients and health professionals to identify areas of concern for patients, and therefore help more cardiac patients in the future adjust successfully after their heart illness or operation. This phase of the Cardiac Emotions Study is looking at the specific fears experienced by patients with cardiac condition. With this knowledge, we will develop the Fear of Cardiac Recurrence or Progression Scale, a comprehensive measure of future-related fears in cardiac patients.

what am i required to do in the cardiac emotions study?

You are eligible to participate in the Cardiac Emotions Study if you have had a heart event, such as heart attack, heart surgery or stent, or unstable angina, or have a chronic heart condition with potential for heart events, such as heart failure. If you agree to participate in the Cardiac Emotions Study, you will be asked to complete a one-off online or hard-copy consent form and questionnaire, which asks some questions about yourself and a set of questions about your fears. Your responses will remain strictly confidential. The questionnaire should take approximately 20 minutes to complete.

how do I get involved in the cardiac emotions study? The Cardiac Emotions Study is being conducted by the Australian Centre for Heart Health and The University of Melbourne and has received ethics approval from the University of Melbourne Human Research Ethics Committee. This project is endorsed by the Australian Cardiovascular Health and Rehabilitation Association (ACRA). To complete the online questionnaire, you can scan the QR code provided on this form, or follow the link to our website www.australianhearthealth.org.au/ces

Want more information or to request a hard-copy questionnaire? T

he meaningful gift of a Foresters Financial Education Bond will last a lifetime, supporting for your children to provide your grandchildren with a good education, is building the foundation of a bright future. Making education accessible to future generations represents an opportunity to create a lasting and meaningful, noncontestable legacy. Growing an investment that your family can access in the future, without hefty taxation, is a savvy way to support the transition of wealth across generations. An education bond is non-distributing: it works by compounding earnings. This means that the bond does not generate taxable income that might impact your ‘income test’ and can be held in a Family Trust.

Protecting Family Legacies Building on our original philosophies from 1849, Foresters Financial is a modern bond specialist organisation that helps families and individuals achieve financial goals. We grow wealth for tomorrow through accessible solutions, with the innovative, considered investment approach of our inhouse Chief Investment Officer. We practice responsible investment and apply a futurefocused mindset to achieve investment outcomes, seeking opportunities to use our capital to create positive social impact as well as generating strong financial returns.

“Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today” – Malcolm X Our education bonds are designed to empower the creation of a lasting impact on your family’s future, ensuring that the value of education endures across multiple generations. Education bonds can be used to pay for a broad range of education costs and can be accessed when you need them. It’s a tax effective way to accumulate purpose-driven savings, ensuring you reduce financial burdens for the future.

Case Study: An investment in the brightest future possible Simon and Jenny have recently retired with a decent superannuation balance. Their elder son, Pete, and his wife Trudy have two children, Abigail and Alyssa, and they see how hard their

son and daughter-in-law work to provide for the girls. Simon and Jenny want to help make sure that their grandchildren have access to the same quality education that their boys had, and that money for their schooling doesn’t end up being absorbed by the family budget. They know the importance of saving money and feel that establishing an education bond with a lump sum contribution will encourage Pete and Trudy to also put money aside while the girls are young. They do also worry that if the money goes straight to Pete and Trudy, and their marriage didn’t work out, it would become part of a settlement and might not be used for the girls education. An education bond has given Simon and Jenny certainty about how the money they’ve provided will be spent. Because Abigail and Alyssa are both preschool age, the 10-year investment term is ideal.

GIFTS IN WILLS TO CHARITY CAN HAVE THE BIGGEST IMPACT Australians are amazing people; we are proud of and support many communities. We come together in times of need such as a disaster or a community fundraising drive. We give and give, some a little and some a lot. We value what it means to give. For some people the cycle of giving slows as they get older, and income needs to stretch. We are all experiencing an increase in the cost of living and bit by bit this can put pressure on our capacity to continue giving to the charities that are close to our hearts. There is always another option to give. Have you

considered leaving a gift in your Will? This quiet giving doesn’t cost you anything now but can have a great impact on one or more of the charities you most admire well into the future. By leaving a gift in your Will to Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation. You will be leaving a legacy that will impact the lives of generations of kids not yet born. Leaving a gift, as little as 1% can make a big difference to the future of sick kids and help them live their healthiest lives. Your legacy can help fund groundbreaking research, purchase vital cutting-edge equipment and, train future medical staff who will provide world-class healthcare when needed. Making or updating your Will to include a gift to Sydney Children’s

Hospitals Foundation is as simple as contacting your legal advisor and they will do all the important work for you. Alternatively, you could use an online option to write your Will. Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation has partnered with Safewill, Australia’s most trusted online Will writing platform. Safewill makes it quick, easy, and affordable to write your Will online. You can write your Will online for just $80 (usually $160). All Wills with Safewill are checked and verified by their legal entity Safewill Legal. Trimming costs, not joy; A money saving manual for the holidays

H

oliday shopping might stress you out, but tweaking your spending habits during the season doesn’t have to be discouraging. Setting a budget, taking care of your needs, and giving yourself some peace of mind could be the best gifts you give yourself this festive season. Holiday-related financial stress can affect anyone, regardless of your income. Here are some ways to celebrate the holidays and spend time with your loved ones without adding extra financial pressure.

Explore affordable ways to celebrate Why not have a chat with your loved ones? Discussing a different approach to holiday spending and gift-giving this year could be a great way to ease the pressure for yourself and everyone. Here are a couple of ideas you might want to mention: Cut back on spending by setting some friendly spending limits. Instead of exchanging gifts, focus on simply enjoying time with your loved ones. Bringing up these suggestions might feel a bit like the Grinch, but hopefully, your loved ones will understand and even appreciate your perspective. With inflation and rising interest rates, it’s possible that your family and friends are also thinking about ways to keep their holiday budgets in check this year.

It’s okay to say No Even during the season of giving, it’s important to consider your own needs. If you ever feel pushed to spend more on gifts or feel like you have to host more celebrations than you’re comfortable with, feel free to kindly say, “No.” Your well-being matters too and it’s okay to decline.

Practical budgets for holiday spending Take a moment to review your budget and determine the amount you’re comfortable allocating for the holidays. This varies for each person, and there’s no universal “right” amount. Reflect on your spending from last year, as indicated by your bank statement, and assess whether this year’s priorities align with your budgeting preferences from the previous year.

Shopping lists keep things organised and easy-going Creating a shopping list is a fantastic way to streamline your food and gift shopping experiences, all while keeping a close eye on your budget. When putting together your lists, jot down the details in a format that’s easy to glance at. For gift lists, break down your spending for each person, list the items you plan to buy, specify whether you’ll be making purchases in person or online, and make note of any discounts you come across. For grocery shopping, consider whether you need to get specific ingredients ahead of time.

Secret santa, potlucks and e-cards Arrange a Secret Santa gift exchange! Each person draws a name in secret, keeping it hush-hush, and then picks out a gift exclusively for that individual. Usually, there’s a friendly spending limit, and the surprise factor during the gift exchange adds an extra layer of joy to the occasion. Make your holiday meals a breeze by planning potlucks! When everyone chips in, you not only save money but also tons of time and energy. It’s a win-win! Save both money and time

with the magic of e-cards! Instead of buying and mailing traditional holiday cards, check out some lovely e-cards online. They’re either free or quite affordable, offering a fantastic way to send cheerful holiday greetings to your faraway friends and family. And hey, if you’re feeling artistic, why not create your very own unique holiday cards? It adds that extra special touch! It’s a breeze to get carried away with the holiday excitement, but overspending can lead to some post-celebration stress, it’s essential to keep in mind the practical side of managing the expenses that come afterward and keep up the holiday spirit at the same time.

o roads lead to Fatboys, because this unique watering hole is in the middle of a South Pacific Ocean lagoon. Canoe is the local form of transport in these parts. Fatboys is a lounge, bar, café, lie-around-and-donothing fale on the end of a jetty off Mbambanga Island in the heart of Vella Lagoon, Western Province, Solomon Islands. It is part of a mini-resort, meaning half a dozen small beach cottages overlooking the same lagoon. For those who seek time in an environment where the sounds of nature are unimpeded, the night sky, a carpet of stars and the food direct from garden or sea to table. This is the place. Solomon Islands is an archipelago made up of 922 quintessential palm and sand fringed islands. There are hundreds of islands to choose from, few have been cemented over. This is village-stay if you desire being close to nature at its tropical best. Forget the capital city Honiara on the main island Guadalcanal. Like all capitals, busy, crowded at times, hot, dusty, steamy all the time. The knowing SI visitor pauses on landing at Honiara international airport to catch a domestic flight to any one of the many island groups, check-in to a leaf hut and dine on a reef fish caught maybe an hour ago. The difficulty

is choosing just which island to plop on. Transport around these islands is by canoe. Some motorized, but the majority hand carved from the trunk of a tall tree. In the Western Province, a popular guided hike is up Kolombangara a stratovolcano island, noted by Bird Life International as Important Bird Areas (IBS) because of the range of rare species. Here and the neighbouring Ghizo Island you can wander through the jungle guided by a knowing local, to seek out rare birds, butterflies, and plants with medicinal uses. There are western style hotels on the major islands, along with traditional guest houses, most of these built

the way of generations passed in this subsistence Melanesian/ Polynesian culture. It is not often you see a roof being replaced by the cutting and weaving of palm fronds. Not too many places in the world can you enjoy fresh crab, reef fish (sweet lip, trevally, miamia, mackerel) straight from canoe to kitchen, for the price of a club sandwich or drink fresh bush lime, a chilled Sol Brew or a chardonnay while watching the sun set over a shimmering tropical lagoon. One of my favorites is Zipola Habu Resort on Lola Island in the Vona Vona Lagoon, Western Province. Lola is a typical SI palm fringed island floating in a lagoon of crystal-clear turquoise water ,

with white sandy beaches and wild orchids hanging from the trees. Zipola is popular with fisherfolk, but also those who like to dine on fresh seafood, fruit, vegetables, along with fresh water and air. Then there’s Fatboys on Mbambanga Island a short canoe ride from Ghizo airport. The same tropical island paradise adjectives apply to this unique bar and lounge built out over the water of the Vella Lagoon. Everything is fresh and sited over a tropical aquarium. Decades ago, author James Michener described the Morovo Lagoon as the eighth wonder of the world. For good reason as Marovo is the largest saltwater lagoon in the world, protected by the largest double barrier reef system on the planet.

And here floats Uepi Island. The waters are not only rich in coral, but in marine life. One can sit on the jetty looking down on the giant clams and endless flow of fish, and a sea snake or two. Yes, there are reef sharks here, so well fed they are often photographed up close and personal by snorkelers and scuba divers. The water is so clear, as you peer through the mangrove roots in the shallows it is easy to follow the activities of the octopus, sea horse, cuttlefish, squid, the velvet skinned moray eel, and tropical fish that make this their home. While a classic raised barrier reef island, covered in impressive rainforest, outlined by fringing reef and sandy beach, Uepi is unique in that it

is washed by the warm lagoon waters on one side and the oceanic depths on the other. Just 2.5km long with beautiful gardens and coconut palms around the guest cottages, the rest is pure rainforest rich in flora and fauna. There’s still Florida Islands, Malatia, Choiseul, Russell Islands, Tulagi, Velle La Vella and so many more. International flights now land at Munda in the Western Province, the gateway to Ghizo and Kennedy Island. The average flight time from Brisbane to Honiara, Guadalcanal or Munda, is three hours and 15 minutes. Take a flight. Take a look.

Club News / VIC Visit To Old Melbourne Goal As the temperature in Melbourne plunged to below zero, a group of strong and hearty seniors from the Combined Probus Club of Wantirna Heights, headed to a city-bound tram or train to visit the Old Melbourne Gaol. While they stood in very pleasant sunshine outside in the garden, their guide, a very enthusiastic young man, entertained them. He told stories about Gaol inmates who escaped through the sewer pipes and others. As the group stepped inside the old gaol, they entered the tiny cells and saw the hangman’s noose, ominous on the upper floor, with the original rope replaced with a new lot from Bunnings. They also viewed the pillory where those who misbehaved were whipped with ‘the cat o’ nine tails’. Though it was all rather sobering, it was an interesting venture into Melbourne’s darker past!

The Backroom Boys And Girls Prior to the monthly general meeting, the backroom boys and girls from the East Malvern Combined Probus Club diligently get to work. Each individual involved has put forth significant effort to come up with the best value and most entertaining activities they can think of for the members. On the day of the general meeting, the committee members and workers arrive early to make all the necessary preparations. The photograph below illustrates the arrangement of tables with sign-on boards and showcases the individuals responsible for taking reservations and processing payments for outings.

All Aboard the Murray Princess Cruise Members from Croydon Park, Rowville/ Lysterfield, Brisbane, and Sydney Probus Clubs embarked on a fantastic trip to Adelaide where they boarded the Murray Princess Paddle Wheeler for a 5-day/4-night adventure. Under the capable guidance of Captain Abe and Second Officer Ian, the group travelled upstream and experienced a wine tasting at Burk Salter Boutique Winery near Blanchetown, where they moored. A visit to the Ngaut Ngaut Aboriginal reserve was a highlight of the trip, with the group learning about shells found at the site that dated back more than 10,000 years. The multi-tasking staff worked tirelessly to cater to the group's needs, providing excellent food and service and seemed to enjoy the company of the travellers as much as the travellers enjoyed theirs.

As the members of the East Malvern Combined Probus Club Inc congregated on the upper level at Southern Cross Station, they pondered their destination and whether they would enjoy the restaurant chosen for lunch. Their destination was Altona, upon arrival at Altona Station, they found themselves in the middle of a shopping strip that stretched all the way to the beach. The menu was mainly Italian fare, including pizza, and everyone enjoyed their meals, accompanied by either wine or soft drink. The group agreed that it was an excellent choice by their outing’s coordinator.

35 th Birthday celebrations In the picturesque town of Bacchus Marsh, there exists a closeknit community of individuals who have formed a bond that is truly special. Speeches were made, the cake was cut, and years of membership were recognised, and gratitude was expressed. It was an event that would forever remain etched in the hearts of the Probus members. Celebrating 30 years

The gold medal goes to…

Sixty-six members of the Combined Probus Club of Bridgeman Downs gathered to celebrate the Club’s 30th anniversary in true Probus spirit – with Fun, Friendship, and Fellowship. Embracing the theme of the occasion, many members adorned themselves with their finest pearls. Four current members – Ron, Glenda, Norm, and Wendy – have been loyal members for 28 and 26 years, respectively, and were given the honour of cutting the celebratory cake. One of the Club’s many success stories is its annual Friendly Quiz. In 1999, the Club introduced a Trivia Quiz Day for Probus Clubs on Brisbane’s north side. This event quickly became an annual tradition, and the Friendly Quiz days have played a significant role in promoting the Probus spirit.

Twenty-three members of the Garden City Toowoomba Probus Club enjoyed the challenges of an “Above the Waist Olympics” event conducted at their Rose Cottage, Newtown venue. Events included building the tallest and best-looking free-standing tower out of newspaper, no glue or sticky-tape allowed; a spelling test based on the recently-published Prime Minister’s Spelling Bee list for grades 7 and 8; keep the ping pong balls on the table - a hand eye event and the final challenge - to outfit a fellow member with a creation made from a couple of black tidy bags, some ribbon and anything else in the members’ possession. Events were timed, points awarded, and gold medals awarded to the winning team. All participants enjoyed the day as a great example of Probus Fun, Friendship and Fellowship. Garden City Toowoomba Probus can be contacted on 4636 5556 or gardencityprobus@gmail.com. Visitors most welcome. The models for the Black Tidy Bag challenge

An Exciting Trip to the Capricorn Coast Thuringowa Combined Probus Club had 34 members embark on a 7-day journey through Mackay, Yeppoon & Airlie Beach by coach. Laughter and friendly banter filled the time on the drive from stop to stop. With many outstanding attractions to see along the way from the Sarina Fields Parklands to the Wreck Point Scenic Lookout (the ultimate photo destination offering 360-degree views of the Capricorn Coast and Keppel Bay) down to Emu Park which is home to the famous Singing Ship – to name a few. The week was filled with food, fun, fellowship, friendship and great memories. DECEMBER - JANUARY 2024 ACTIVE RETIREES | 47 | WWW.PROBUSSOUTHPACIFIC.ORG

Club News / WA Induction of Life Members The Kingsley Probus Club was very pleased to honour the faithful service of two members at a recent meeting, David and Bill who were both presented with Certificates and Life Member badges by President Rod. Treasurer Stephen spoke about the years of service David and Bill played and the important roles they undertook in keeping their Club viable and buoyant with a relatively small membership.

The Tuart Forest The Southwest of WA has many distinctive ecosystems, one of them being the Tuart Forest, where the unique Tuart trees are found. With a view to understand this wonderful tree and its future, the Probus Club of Eaton organized a trip to the visitors’ centre. After a rather wet trip from Bunbury and a brief introduction by member were moved into the meeting room for an exceptional morning tea of scones, jam and cream. Members were then presented with an account of the state of the forest, the plans for the future, what work has been done so far and how the Ludlow site will be developed into a camping and holiday venue. So much has been done, yet so much remains to be tackled. Members were then taken on a walk around the buildings, inspecting the old sawmill and learning the importance of its past. Other buildings have become offices, a base for the traditional custodians and there will eventually be short stay and overnight accommodation. As there was a greenhouse and propagating shed some members took the opportunity to buy some plants for their own gardens.

A Tiptoe Through The Tulips We all know that Spring is a time of wonderful flowering and growth, and the Nannup Tulip Festival is a great example of this. Recently the Probus Club of Eaton Garden Group organized a bus trip down south to see what was on offer. We were accompanied by members of two other Clubs and luckily the questionable weather only found us while we were on the bus. As we were there on a Tuesday there were some good and bad things about our visit. Firstly, there were no crowds, parking was easy, and the tulips were at their best. However, many places, cafes etc. were closed and there were no market stalls, but as we were on a garden trip, not a buy-a-thon, that was fine. Our next stop was a revelation. As we pulled up (some way out of town), we glimpsed a full sized (but fiberglass) African elephant and was that a child’s Ferris wheel? This was Wombledoone! It is a magical world created by Vicki for herself. We had afternoon tea nestled amongst the plants of this quirky creation that brought out the little bit of a child in all of us and shows what you can do if you give free reign to your dreams.

Trevor Craddock I

n Trevor we have an amazing guy aside from reaching his 100 on 17th September and being mobile with all his faculties. He has had an enviable, varied, successful career, all done with modesty and charm. He started work for the Bank of NSW at 17 and joined the RAAF air crew training in 1941 in Victoria, Canada and the UK. His Pacific convoy to Canada was stalked by the Japanese but his skilled Captain dodged the torpedo with a sharp manoeuvre that tipped them all out of their bunks! In the UK he was an anti- submariner flying Lancasters for 12 sorties over the Nordic fjords. But his war highlight was watching the D-day invasion from the Brighton coast. On return he moved into PR in the Wales Head Office. On impulse, he applied for a plum job at the State Savings Bank (SSB) in PR at double his salary and won it ahead of 150 others. He retired 23 years later in 1983 as Head of Marketing over a staff of 50. His special joy was bringing the Mickey Mouse Club to the SSB, and lunching with Walt Disney in Los Angelos. He helped make the SSB the leading savings bank of Victoria. Trevor chose the RACV as his city Club, serving

as Vice President to 1994, and is a Life Member. He helped form the Carbine Club in 1973, a limited member club for sportspersons, and was President 1970-72. He organised Prince Charles as speaker in 1981 and sat with him over lunch. Trevor is a passionate member of the Tigers, the Richmond Football Club, was invited onto the Committee in 1977 and was a Director on the VFL Board over 1979-82. The Cain government

appointed him Chairman of the troubled Harness Racing Board over 198490, and onto the Boards of 3UZ and the TAB. He was then corralled to run the Ballet Centre for three years. Finally, as Manager, he raised $350,000 for the Odyssey House Drug Rehabilitation Centre. He retired in 1998 to work in the Memorial Garden of St John’s Anglican Church, Toorak.

In 2009 Rita carried out the role of Vice President, responsible for a wide range of interesting Guest Speakers. In 2010 Rita was appointed President This was a difficult time when the club was required to change its meeting venue. Rita led the process to move from one side of the Brisbane River to the other. It was a stressful undertaking but one that Rita handled with aplomb.

The membership of the Club had grown to 100, the statutory ceiling. Under Rita’s reign the waiting list for new members increased. After stepping down from the Presidency, Rita became Outings Co-Ordinator from 2012 to 2017 and after a short period of illness undertook that role again from 2019 to 2022. The Outings Coordinator role is an onerous one requiring significant personal time and energy. Rita was excellent in that role and provided events that have been a joy to our membership. Rita has certainly fulfilled the Motto of “Fun, Friendship, and Fellowship” for a long time. Rita is the first life membership appointment in the club’s history.
