German impact on Riga - history in archtecture

• Germany has always got a great impact on all spheres in Latvia.

• In the early medieval period, the region’s peoples resisted Christianization and became subject to attack in the Northern Crusades.

• Latvia’s capital city Riga, founded in 1201 by Germans at the mouth of the Daugava, became a strategic base in a papally sanctioned conquest of the area by the Livonian Brothers of the Sword.

German crusaders built castles and towering Romanesque and Gothic cathedrals, which will still symbolize the trademark silhouettes of Riga and Cesis ever since 13th century.

The well-preserved Historical center of Riga is included in the UNESCO World Heritage list.

ART NOUVEAU JUGENDSTIL

The Art Nouveau architecture in Riga makes up roughly one third of all the buildings in the center of Riga, making Latvia's capital the city with the highest concentration of Art Nouveau architecture anywhere in the world.

The three R‘s – Renesance, Rationalism and Reformation – influenced the development of architecture between the Medieval and the Early Modern ages. The territory of Latvia changed hands among the rule of Germans, who brought their architecture influences still visible today.
