ORANGE, HIGH VISIBILITY AND FLAME RETARDANT

Producing a Flame Retardant fabric with a highly intense orange colour that meets the requirement of standard EN ISO 20471 is hard to achieve, without adding polyester to the fibre blend. As polyester is not a Flame Retardant fibre, the challenge is to combine High Visibility and Flame Retardancy in the same garment.

Whereas High Visibility textiles in yellow are easier to produce, because the inherent Flame Retardant Modacrylic fibre in combination with cotton can be used, instead of polyester. At Tranemo, we have managed to develop a fabric with only 29% polyester, compared to the 50% that is common in orange High Visibility clothing. This reduction decreases the risk of ignition and increases the ability to withstand high energies in the event of an Arc Flash. A carefully balanced combination of Flame Retardant fibres has been required to meet the high safety and performance requirements.

The fabric is designed with Flame Retardant fibres on the inside, closest to the skin, to provide both safety and comfort. At the same time, the outside fulfils the High Visibility requirements. To balance protection and wearability, we chose a fabric weight of 220 g/m² which is slightly heavier than our yellow High Visibility T-shirts at 180 g/m². This was necessary to pass the Flame Retardant and Arc Flash tests. The result is an orange Flame Retardant Hi-Vis T-shirt that combines maximum safety, with high comfort and durability.

High Visibility textiles in orange has been a technical challenge

Louise loves tackling technical challenges, such as the production of the new orange High Visibility knitwear.

Her dedication to creating high-quality, innovative products, with a focus on functional design and user safety, highlights her passion and expertise in the field.

SWEDISH MANUFACTURING

Benefits, challenges and future prospects for Flame Retardant textiles

European manufacturing is at the centre of Tranemo’s business, in fact 90% of all our fabric production takes place in Europe. We work closely with a small number of suppliers to develop high-quality, innovative and sustainable materials. Shared goals ensure that all products fulfil our high standards of functionality, durability and safety. Despite the challenges of producing technical textiles, we see a positive future for European manufacturing, where we continue to drive developments in sustainable workwear.

The ability to make changes quickly, such as adjusting patterns or materials is invaluable.

During the autumn, we visited our Swedish partner who manufactures most of our Flame Retardant knitwear. Manufacturing in Sweden gives us a number of competitive advantages, the biggest of which is proximity and flexibility in production. ‘The ability to make changes quickly, such as adjusting patterns or materials is invaluable,’ explains the production manager at the knitwear company. This flexibility makes it possible to react quickly to customers’ needs and create customised solutions for flame-resistant workwear.

Our supplier is known for its high level of automation, which helps them keep production costs down without compromising on quality. They have the technical expertise in-house, which allows them to test new fibres and yarns early in the process. The process means that we are often first to innovate. The combination of automation and technical knowhow allows us to be at the forefront of the development of Flame Retardant textiles and workwear.

CHALLENGES OF FLAME RETARDANT MATERIALS

Producing Flame Retardant and technical textiles presents extra tough challenges. One of the more difficult ones is that fibres used for flame retardancy tend to shrink more than other materials, requiring carefully tailored patterns and designs. ‘It’s about finding the right balance between flame retardancy, shrinkage and durability,’ says the production manager. By carefully selecting materials and using advanced manufacturing processes, we have managed to ensure that the workwear retains its functional properties, even after many washes.

COLLABORATION AND INNOVATION

Close co-operation is needed to constantly develop and certify Flame Retardant materials. That’s why we have regular meetings between product development, production and purchasing, which allow us to quickly solve both operational and strategic challenges. Our collaboration on the development and certification of Flame Retardant materials is based on continuous dialogue and joint innovation.

THE FUTURE OF SWEDISH MANUFACTURING

The future of Swedish-made workwear and technical textiles looks very promising. We see an increased demand for soft and comfortable knitted workwear, while sustainability and environmentally friendly alternatives are gaining more and more focus. For example, we have reduced the use of cultivated cotton by using 50% recycled cotton in our Fame Retardant fabrics. Less cultivated cotton contributes to a more sustainable supply chain. At the same time, we have several exciting projects underway where we are testing and evaluating fibres that could eventually replace cotton.

We are sure that more people will want to use knitted clothing at work, which is why we will continue to develop more flexible, sustainable and innovative products.

OUR JOURNEY TOWARDS A PFAS-FREE RANGE

A BETTER WORLD

Sustainable development involves tackling sustainability from several different perspectives. Our focus remains on developing high-quality, long-lasting workwear, primarily manufactured in Europe. However, we also need to consider the environmental and climate impact at every stage of the product lifecycle.

In 2021, we introduced our first Flame Retardant range, Cantex WS which is sewn in a fabric with a PFAS-free finish. This was developed through extensive research and testing in partnership with one of our primary European fabric suppliers. This was the beginning of our journey to phase out PFAS in all of our fabrics where it is not essential, reaffirming our commitment to minimising pollution and promoting sustainable workwear.

By 2025, Tranemo will exclusively source PFAS-free fabrics, with one exception. The fabric retained with PFAS impregnation is used in the Apex range, designed to protect against chemical splashes from oil, O-xylene, and butanol. Unfortunately, no suitable alternative has yet been identified to safeguard against these specific hazards, and in this case, our priority must be to keep you safe at work.

We are aware that transitioning to a completely PFAS-free stock is not something that can be accomplished overnight as it will take years to complete. However, we can now proudly state that:

ALL TERA TX FABRIC IS NOW PRODUCED 100% PFAS-FREE

As Tera TX is our most popular and extensive range of Flame Retardant workwear, this marks a significant milestone in our No-to-PFAS journey. With the exception of one range, our entire workwear assortment is now produced using either fabrics that are originally PFAS-free or fabrics treated with a PFAS-free impregnation.

ANNA CLAESSON FABRIC QUALITY MANAGER

Anna ensures that all Tranemo fabrics incorporate the latest innovations with a strong focus on safety and environmental sustainability.

Within a workwear company where end users work in heavy-industry environments, protection is paramount. Trying to balance sustainability alongside protection is a challenging yet rewarding endeavour and it is a motivating force which drives her forward.

So Anna, how can a PFAS-free fabric still be water-repellent?

Both PFAS and PFAS-free finishes operate by creating a fabric surface with lower surface tension than the liquid itself, allowing it to run off easily. To achieve this effect, fabrics have often been impregnated with PFAS, environmentally harmful chemicals with a highly persistent carbon-fluorine bond, which is nearly impossible for nature to break down.

In the PFAS-free alternative we use on most of our waterrepellent fabrics, the harmful carbon-fluorine bond has been replaced with a carbon-hydrogen bond,” explains Anna. ”This adjustment creates a fabric surface tension lower than many liquids, though it doesn’t repel oils effectively. Currently, only a finish with PFAS can provide effective oil repellence.

The carbon-hydrogen bond naturally occurs throughout nature. For example, it enables water droplets to roll off leaves after rainfall and allows water to run off the feathers of a duck.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS or PFC) are a diverse group of human-made chemicals used in a wide range of consumer and industrial products. PFAS are resistant to grease, oil, water and heat and are mostly used as a dirt and oil repellent impregnation on clothing.

PFAS

CROSS-IMPREGNATION

Cross-impregnation allows garments with a PFAS finish to be re-impregnated with a PFAS-free finish, and vice versa.

Is cross-impregnation possible on workwear?

For workwear with chemical protection compliant with EN 13034, re-impregnation after washing is necessary to maintain protective properties. Through extensive testing, we verified that cross-impregnation in both directions preserved the water and chemical repellence of all products, ensuring continued compliance with the EN 13034 standard regardless of the chosen finish. A result that is perfect for the phase out of PFAS.

Can the laundry industry use cross-impregnation?

Washing and re-impregnation should always be carried out at industrial laundries equipped to perform the process correctly within a closed system.

As cross-impregnation is possible, laundries do not need to separate PFAS-free garments from the ones that contain PFAS. In addition, this also means that laundries have the possibility to choose whether they want to use a PFAS or a PFAS-free re-impregnation on workwear certified for acid and alkaline. A big step towards a PFAS-free future.

EXAMINE YOUR PFAS-FREE WORKWEAR

To confirm that a garment’s water and chemical repellence remains effective, Tranemo recommends conducting random sampling on your workwear.

This can be done easily using a droplet test.

Place a droplet of vinegar on the fabric

■ If the droplet does not absorb, the repellent function is working, and your protection is in good condition.

■ If the droplet absorbs into the fabric, the repellent function is not working and a re-impregnation or a re-activation by heat is needed.

RECYCLED GARMENTS

Tranemo has the long-term goal to become circular, even though this is not currently possible. In a circular business model, the aim is to minimise waste by designing products and processes in a way that enables:

REDUCE - REUSE – REPAIR – RECYCLE

Achieving this goal would mean creating a product that can be fully recycled at the end of its life, thereby eliminating waste.

In 2024, Tranemo decided to join Amfori BSCI. Amfori BSCI is a comprehensive system that supports companies in improving social performance in their supply chains, thereby promoting ethical and sustainable business practices globally.

STAY WARM AND SAFE

Merino wool is a strong and durable material with exceptional Flame Retardant and insulating properties, making it an ideal choice for PPE in challenging outdoor conditions.

Wool is naturally renewable and harvested annually without harm to the sheep. Merino wool is biodegradable, because it is composed of keratin (a protein found in animal hair), which can be broken down by microorganisms in nature. Wool production requires less water than crops like cotton, while its inherent flame resistance means that no added chemicals are necessary.

Additionally, Merino wool’s breathability, soft feel, moisture-wicking capabilities, dirt repellence and odour-resistant qualities keep wearers warm, dry and comfortable during high-intensity work. Durable and longlasting, Merino wool offers unmatched performance for those who need reliable, all-year-round protection.

After the face, the hands are probably one of the body parts that we humans value most. Mattias Bengtsson, Sales Director at Tranemo, explains that during his time as a PPE Salesman, he has seen countless reports and stories of serious burns to the hands. In most cases these injuries, could have been avoided if the victim had the right knowledge and used the appropriate protective gloves.

THE CLOSER THE HAZARD, THE HIGHER THE RISK

When working in an electrical installation, such as switchgear, transformers and trackside areas, there is always a potential risk of electric arc flash and electric shock. An Electric Arc explosion can generate radiant heat temperatures of over 10,000°C, posing a high risk of serious burns.

It is important to know, that the thermal arc energy decreases exponentially with distance, that is - the closer the hazard, the higher the risk, and vice versa. The hands, which are usually closest to the hazard in electrical work, are therefore the parts of the body that are most exposed in the event of an accident. That’s why proper hand protection is essential.

If you stand at a distance of 30 cm from the source, the thermal arc energy is estimated to be 9 cal/cm². If you reach your hands 15 cm closer, the energy is quadrupled to 36 cal/cm².

PROTECT YOUR HANDS

What level of protection should the gloves have?

At least the same level of protection as your certified protective clothing. However, to ensure adequate protection, we recommend that you use protective gloves with a higher level of protection than your other protective clothing.

Remember that the hands are often closer to the hazard than the other parts of the body and that it is crucial to choose protective equipment that provides maximum safety.

DID YOU KNOW THAT?

The skin is damaged by exposure to energy as low as 1.2 cal/cm², which is equivalent to holding your finger one centimetre above a burning candle for one second.

PROTECTIVE LINING INSIDE

EXTRA LONG CUFF

THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN USING PROTECTIVE GLOVES

1

Use gloves with a high protection level

As your hands are often close to the hazard, always wear a higher level of protection than your FR workwear.

2

Use workwear that overlaps the gloves

Your Flame Retardant workwear should always cover the glove cuffs at the wrist to avoid gaps with bare skin.

3

Use dry gloves

Damp or wet gloves can cause vapour which significantly reduces the protection.

4

Use clean gloves

Although the gloves are Flame Retardant, oil and dirt on the gloves can ignite and cause burns.

5

Use the right glove size

When your gloves fit well, the risk of mistakes that could lead to dangerous incidents are reduced.

6

Bring an extra pair of gloves to work

If your gloves get wet or dirty during your workday, you have an extra pair to change into.

WHERE GARMENTS ARE MADE

As we grow and evolve, we remain dedicated to fostering a culture of respect, fairness and collaboration, ensuring that Tranemo remains a place where people are proud to work and are empowered to reach their fullest potential. Together, we not only produce exceptional products, but we also make a community rooted in integrity, care and shared success.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND EMPLOYEE CARE

At Tranemo Bulgaria, a safe, supportive and positive working environment is not just a goal, but a commitment. Our production facilities are designed to enhance employee wellbeing, foster growth and ensure that each team member feels valued and empowered.

Our facility in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, exemplifies this commitment. Between 2022 and 2023, we carried out extensive renovations focused on creating an optimal workspace. We upgraded the insulation and installed a modern climate control system to maintain comfortable temperatures and humidity year-round, ensuring comfort for our team in both summer and winter.

Kostadin Kyorgogov, Managing Director, recounts the day of the installation with a smile:

I stomped over to the team leader and asked, ‘What’s going on? Is no one working today?!’ The team leader looked at me, surprised, and replied, ‘Uh, yes. Everyone’s working as usual. See for yourself.’

Sure enough, when I walked into the sewing room, production was in full swing. It was just so much quieter with the new sound-absorbing ceiling!”

This upgrade, along with ergonomic workstations, has created a more comfortable and efficient work environment. Our advanced, safety-focused machinery also minimises workplace accident risks.

Sustainability is also integral to Tranemo’s operations. Solar panels installed at our Svea facility now generate more than half of our annual electricity consumption, significantly boosting energy efficiency and supporting our environmental goals. Throughout all facilities, we employ the LEAN 5S methodology, which promotes cleanliness, organisation, and waste reduction, leading to higher productivity and employee satisfaction.

Looking to the future, we’re expanding with the addition of our Gustav factory, set to undergo renovations to further enhance our European production capacity. This expansion aligns with our strategy to strengthen our European market presence, where 90% of our Flame Retardant garments are already produced. The new factory will enable us to meet growing demand while upholding our rigorous quality standards.

SUPPORTING A THRIVING WORKFORCE

Employee wellbeing extends beyond the workplace. Each year, we organise a companywide staff trip, where all employees are invited to join. Tranemo covers all expenses, including travel, accommodation, and meals, making this a much anticipated and highly appreciated tradition. It’s an opportunity for everyone to connect, relax and enjoy time together, creating wonderful memories and strengthening team bonds.

To further support work-life balance, we also provide an additional paid day off on 15th September, a meaningful day in Bulgaria as children return to school after summer holidays. Our transparent wage structure, complete with a bonus system, ensures fair pay for all employees. Additional benefits include lunch vouchers and on-site amenities such as coffee, cold beverages, and comfortable locker rooms.

At Tranemo, we recognise that a supportive workplace culture is key to both personal fulfilment and professional success. By investing in our employees’ wellbeing and growth, we build a thriving workforce ready to meet the demands of the future with commitment and pride.

DIVERSITY AS A CORE STRENGTH

At Tranemo, we celebrate the diverse backgrounds, experiences and perspectives of our employees, recognising that this diversity strengthens our company and drives our collective success.

Our commitment to a safe, supportive, and inclusive work environment is more than just a promise, it’s a guiding principle that shapes every aspect of our operations. From sustainable practices and innovative workspaces, to initiatives that prioritise employee wellbeing, we continuously strive to create a workplace where every individual can thrive.

People seek us out for our strong reputation as a fair and responsible employer.

Elis are a leader in the textile and hygiene service sector with over 70 years of experience and a strong focus on a circular business model. Elis specialises in renting, collecting, washing, and repairing textiles throughout their entire lifecycle - until the products can no longer be repaired to perform their original purpose.

AN IMPORTANT PARTNER TO TRANEMO

Elis is much more than just a laundromat. They offer sustainable, time-saving and customised services including rental, laundry, maintenance and delivery of quality textiles. Their focus on quality and durability ensures a sustainable approach to textile management.

Tranemo had the opportunity to interview Tina Lundell, who is the General Manager at Elis in Angered, Gothenburg, Sweden. As part of this interview we discussed sustainability, quality assurance, and the impact of our collaboration on both their services and our products.

DESIGN FOR THE AFTER MARKET

“The quality of a garment has a direct effect on its lifespan, and the difference is visibly noticeable. Lowquality garments may quickly lose their colour, shape and reflective function and so on”, Tina explains. She continues, “The most important thing is that suppliers design their garment so that it is possible to repair them. This is essential for us, as we extend the lifespan of the garments even further, mostly by mending and proper handling. When I worked in the automotive industry, they said ”design for the after market”, and it’s really just the same concept here.”

We do not throw away the garmentsthey live on until they are absolutely finished.
Tina Lundell, General Manager, Elis

Thanks to a close collaboration, we ensure that Elis is equipped with the right knowledge to repair Flame Retardant PPE, as well as the materials and guidelines they need to retain the certifications of the garments.

Our partnership works both ways. Elis test washes all of our textiles and new products prior to launch, ensuring they meet industrial washing standards before they reach our customers. This is just one example of how our collaboration enhances the quality and performance of our garments, providing reliable and sustainable workwear for even the most demanding operations.

A SUSTAINABLE TOMORROW

EU REGULATION OVERVIEW

Looking ahead to the future of sustainability, the new EU laws and regulations will provide us with a framework to drive our progress even further. Here are a few key acronyms and their meanings which will guide our efforts in 2025.

- CSRD -

The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) is a regulatory framework introduced by the European Union to enhance transparency and accountability in sustainability reporting. It requires companies to disclose detailed information regarding their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) impacts. The CSRD aims to ensure stakeholders have access to consistent and reliable information. This becomes mandatory in 2026.

- ESPR -

The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), which was enforced on 18 July 2024, is the cornerstone of the EU Commission’s approach to more environmentally sustainable and circular products. The Regulation should help the EU double its use of recycled material and meet its energy targets by 2030. Many of the points raised by this EU Regulation have been practices at Tranemo for a long time. Designing durable workwear that lasts, is what we do.

- DPP -

The Digital Product Passport (DPP) is a part of ESPR and is already underway by the EU Commission. The Digital Product Passport will provide more transparency in the supply chain and focuses on how easy the garments are to repair. Tranemo is preparing for this coming requirement.

OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100

OEKO-TEX® is an independent third-party certification process that ensures control of harmful substances. Nearly all the fabrics and accessories that Tranemo use are tested and certified according to product class 2 of OEKO-TEX® Standard 100.

By certifying to the standard, we mitigate the risk of unintentional use of harmful substances and increase the product safety for the end user. All components in our garments, including fabric, lining, buttons and sewing threads, are tested for listed harmful chemicals according to required documents. The list contains limit levels for over 300 substances, which is based on substances prohibited and restricted in EU (REACH) and national laws, together with substances scientifically proven to be harmful to health.

Starting in 2024, OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 includes a new limit for PFAS of 100 mg/kg. The restriction of PFAS enables OEKO-TEX® certification to remain compliant with the US regulations. The new restriction means that garments containing PFAS, are excluded and certified under the new standard - OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 Supplement (special articles) PPE.

Tranemo fabric and accessories are certified by two different OEKO-TEX® certificates:

COMFORT TROUSERS

The comfort trousers were initially developed as a maternity trouser, as the elasticated and flexible waist allows for all different stages of pregnancy. The comfort trousers also work well for both men and women with specific needs. For example, those with an ostomy bag may benefit from this trouser choice, as the stretchy fabric ensures that the trousers do not cause discomfort while still providing safety.

WE CARE

When a workplace consists of people with different experiences and strengths, we believe that it contributes to a better working environment with increased wellbeing and job satisfaction. Tranemo want to contribute to diverse workplaces by creating clothes for everyone.

Everyone deserves to feel comfortable in their clothes at work, no matter who they are or where they are in life, says Maria Grindehall, Garment Technician at Tranemo.

Maria is currently focused on developing Flame Retardant garments for customers with specific needs. Her work ensures that all workers can wear clothes that make them feel comfortable and safe.

Wearing Flame Retardant underwear is crucial for most of our customers. This is why we have expanded our ladies’ range to ensure that our underwear is accessible, safe and comfortable for everyone who requires it. We are pleased to announce that we now offer a bra for women with breast prostheses alongside our regular range. We believe it is important that all women are offered safe and well-fitting underwear.

We now have a Flame Retardant Headscarf in our range, as we believe all women should have access to the clothing they need to protect themselves at work, regardless of their religious beliefs. It is made from Flame Retardant material and can be used to cover the hair, ears and neck. The wearer wraps the headscarf themselves to ensure it is comfortable and fits each wearer correctly.
