Welcome!

This magazine is born of impassioned desires: The desire to foster a positive image of Assistance Dogs; to have their numbers swell and thrive until they become ubiquitous. Unfortunately many people have a biased or limited view of assistance dogs. Not unusual, considering that there are so few out there working in public.

After mulling it over we realized that the best way to help ADs gain more attention is to throw the spotlight on them. And what better way than through the stories of the people who breed them, train them, raise them, live with them, work with them and above all, dedicate themselves to them.

The desire to discover more about Animal-Assisted Interventions, in a novel, offbeat way. Up close and personal, face-to-face, with honesty and clarity. AAI presented through the stories of the people who participate, train the dogs, instruct people, direct programmes, develop innovative projects, create new ways to champion beneficial dog + person interactions. We want to look outside pre-conceived notions and present a new, multi-dimensional view of AAI. And lastly, a desire to promote the people+dog bond that pops up in unusual places, filling us with giddy delight. In photography, literature, art, music and personal accounts.

Esta revista nace de unos apasionados deseos.

El deseo de fomentar una imagen positiva de los perros de asistencia.

Por desgracia muchas personas tienen una visión muy sesgada o limitada de los perros de asistencia. Y puede ser lógico si tenemos en cuenta que hay tan pocos a nuestro alrededor y trabajando en público.

Después de reflexionarlo nos dimos cuenta de que la mejor manera para ayudar a que los perros de asistencia ganen interés sería poner más la atención positiva en ellos. Y qué mejor manera que a través de las historias de las personas que se dedican a ellos, que los crían, los entrenan, los socializan, los promocionan y trabajan con ellos.

El deseo es descubrir más acerca de las Intervenciones Asistidas por Animales (IAA) (sobre todo con perros). Pero de una manera novedosa y poco convencional, de cerca y personal, cara a cara, con honestidad y claridad. Las IAA presentadas a través de las historias de las personas que participan, entrenan a los perros, instruyen a otras, dirigen programas, desarrollan proyectos innovadores y crean nuevas formas de propagar los beneficios de las interacciones entre perro/ persona. Queremos mirar más allá de las nociones preconcebidas y presentar una nueva visión multidimensional de las IAA. Y por último, el deseo de promover el vínculo persona/perro que se manifiesta en sitios inusuales, llenándonos de alegría y sensaciones positivas, en fotografías, en la literatura, en el arte, en la música o en las cuentas personales.

I can say that with confidence, based on what I have witnessed through my extensive knowledge and expertise.

Just by using their hands they will be able to identify and treat (on a superficial level). This could act not only as a treatment but also, if they are concerned, an early warning of a potentially larger problem can be shared with their vet or other professionals.

But the mind-blowing result of the users being given skills is they will start to understand their dogs on a deeper level.

They will start to understand why their dog may be hesitant or find a specific role difficult.

ulia Robertson ha estado observando perros de asistencia en acción durante mucho tiempo y nos habla de sus preocupaciones respeto a su salud muscular. La mioterapia es la aplicación de terapia manual y ejercicios, para diagnosticar y controlar el dolor

muscular y la inflamación que pueden surgir en la vida diaria de un perro. En Galen Therapy Centre, desde 2002 se tratan a muchos perros de todo tipo para mejorar su movilidad y salud.

Dog Heart Magazine: ¿Crees que los perros de asistencia tienen problemas físicos directamente relacionados con su trabajo o su entrenamiento?

Julia Robertson: Sí, principalmente debido a la repetitividad de su trabajo y/o las herramientas que usan. Tomemos dos ejemplos: el primero los perros guía. En mi opinión, el arnés no está adaptado para acomodar el movimiento natural del perro en función de su estructura anatómica. Y, en segundo lugar, los perros de asistencia que trabajan con sillas de ruedas: a menudo están entrenados para caminar en un lado, lo que resulta en lesiones por el esfuerzo repetitivo. Además, el temor de ser atropellado por la silla de ruedas puede crear una curvatura antinatural y dolorosa dentro de su cuerpo.

Creo que el perro guía tiene un papel particularmente difícil: deben usar un arnés que les conecta a la persona y esto impide la marcha y el movimiento natural del perro, creando cargas incorrectas y desbalanceadas en todo su cuerpo. Otro problema con estos perros de trabajo es que muy pronto aprenden a evitar los pies de la persona mientras caminan; el perro sólo necesita un par de incidentes de ser pisado sin querer para aprender a ajustar su posición y evitar el paso de su compañero humano. Al hacer esto caminan a la manera de un cangrejo y, con el tiempo, se inicia un problema muscular en la espalda que puede derivar a problemas esqueléticos mayores. Estos problemas son dolorosos, causando, por supuesto, una falta de entusiasmo por el trabajo. Y lo que es peor, la duración de la salud, la vida laboral y la longevidad del animal pueden acortarse.

DHM: ¿Se podría evitar esto?

JR: Se puede hacer mucho, tanto dentro de las competencias del entrenador y la formación, como a nivel del usuario. Las habilidades básicas se pueden enseñar a los entrenadores, para que entiendan los fundamentos de la salud muscular y cómo ayudar a manejar el perro dentro del entorno de su trabajo. Y en cuanto al tema de la lesión por el esfuerzo repetitivo, se les puede enseñar a evitarla y manejarla.

Podría ser un curso básico de dos días para “Entrenar al Entrenador”, que luego se puede impartir a las personas emparejadas con un perro de asistencia. Los entrenadores recibirán los conocimientos suficientes para que puedan descubrir algunas habilidades específicas para los usuarios y para aplicar a cada situación individual. Esto incluiría entrenar al compañero del perro sobre cómo reconocer los signos de tensión y sobrecarga, y capacitarle para realizar un tratamiento fundamental. Será un programa simple y fácil de desarrollar, que no solo les dará a los entrenadores una mejor comprensión sobre la salud muscular del perro y los cambios psicológicos y conductuales aliados, sino que también les dará a los usuarios una comprensión profunda de las cargas y tensiones del perro, ¡antes de que el perro perciba dolor!

Los puntos clave a considerar para los perros de asistencia son: • Hay que pensar en la posibilidad de la lesión por el esfuerzo repetitivo, ¡esta conduce a problemas en las articulaciones!

• Observar su trabajo para ver si tienen que saltar hacia y desde diferentes superficies, ya que estas actividades causarán lesiones por el esfuerzo repetitivo.

• Hay que pensar en los suelos por los que se debe transitar, para ver si son resbaladizos o si tienen buena adherencia.

• Estar atento a los cambios de comportamiento y/o de la ética laboral del perro. A menudo están relacionados con la evitación del dolor muscular y el comienzo de problemas más profundos.

• LOS PROBLEMAS MUSCULARES NO DESAPARECEN. TIENEN QUE SER TRATADOS Y GESTIONADOS. Por lo tanto, si tienen alguna forma de accidente o lesión, hay que buscar un tratamiento profesional para los músculos.

DHM: ¿Crees que cualquier tipo de problema muscular que se desarrolle podría verse agravado por la naturaleza física de las razas que se usan como perros de asistencia?

JR: Creo, desde mi experiencia, que es más por el papel y, por supuesto, la conformación del perro utilizado. Si un perro tiene una buena conformación, entonces es más robusto en cuanto a la naturaleza física del trabajo. Un perro “sólo es tan fuerte como su parte más débil”, por lo que, si tienen una “debilidad” dentro de su estructura, las acciones repetitivas esencialmente la evidenciarán. Esto es algo más que debe ser entendido especialmente por las entidades de perros de asistencia que entrenan al perro de una persona para ser su perro de asistencia. Esta práctica puede funcionar bien, pero si no son físicamente robustos, sin un tratamiento adecuado el perro podría sufrir.

DHM: ¿Visualizas las técnicas de la terapia Galen incorporadas en el entrenamiento diario de una entidad de perros de asistencia o en la rutina diaria de un perro de asistencia ya trabajando?

JR: ¡Acabas de presentar mi sueño! Creo que podríamos ayudar en ambos escenarios, ¡tan fácilmente! El impacto positivo en la vida laboral de estos perros y, por tanto, sus humanos, sería inmenso. Puedo decir eso con confianza, en base a lo que he visto a través de mi conocimiento y experiencia.

Este conocimiento se puede implementar cuando el perro se asigna a una persona. ¡Y el horario diario de trabajo del perro de asistencia es donde podría ser aún más interesante! Every dog-assisted intervention program has at least four key participants: the handler, the dog, the health or education professional, and the client. But in the Dr. Fernando Arce Special Education Center (located in Torrelavega-Cantabria), we also rely on some people to play a crucial role as the handlers’ assistants. These are students, from 17 to 25 years of age, in the center’s Basic Professional Training program. They haven’t met secondary school requirements and they have special needs, but in helping the handlers and health and education professionals, they play a role in the rehabilitation process of deeply affected children and youth.

The dogs are used as tools and the channel by which the socio-educative and psychosocial tasks of the center’s professionals may be realized. And the young assistants can take part in improving the quality of life of other clients. They work in tandem with the handlers and their dogs in seeking a connection between the dog and the client. Invisible bonds are formed because of the empathy, as expressed through the dog, that permeates the room. These assistants experience positive changes as well: a boost of self-confidence and self-determination. Their need for autonomy, competency and relationship experience is also satisfied. It is exciting to see the look on their faces as they work along with the dog before a client; help carry out motor-activity exercises; and participate in the games proposed for speech therapy or in the informative talks we give at other centers.

The dog-assisted intervention project is carried out in various stages. Throughout the entire process we analyze the participants’ progress and ensure that the designed activities are closely attuned to the determined objectives. Once the project is completed, both handlers and assistants create a project report, as well as a brief evaluation for internal-use.

The assistants participate in different phases: accompanied by the dogs they escort the participants to the classrooms; they record the sessions on video; and they make notes about the sessions’ proceedings. Their help is, without doubt, of great importance. They are one link in this humananimal chain helping in the rehabilitative process of people with special needs.

We are all emotional beings, and my students no less so. Thus, it is important to give them attention and a full measure of opportunities.

I remember well one of my first assistants, whom I’ll call “R”. He was a timid young man, remarkable in his desire to avoid any attention placed on him. I had the idea of pairing him with Suri, a wonderful Spanish Water Dog that brings magic to my work. “R” learned to use the clicker and the use of verbal and gestural cues, to which Suri responded to unfailingly. He extended his dog training skills to his own dog, who at the age of 10 years learned basic obedience under his teaching. And he overcame his stage fright, even in a television studio. I recall his words the day we came back from giving a talk in front of about 50 speech therapists – an event filmed by local television: “I’ve really changed.

Do you remember that when I started working with you, I was afraid to try anything? Thank you so much.” His shining eyes and smiling face served to remind me that assistants such as himself were also being helped by this type of intervention.

And I remember another young man, “C”, who started coming to my class absolutely terrified of dogs.

After three courses he progressed from being the assistant behind the camera (taking photographs, recording with the video camera, acting as secretary…) to the person working out front together with the dog. Yogi is one of our small dogs, and it was his special empathy that incited this connection with “C”, one that helped him lose his fear of dogs. When he left, he had in mind the idea of convincing his family to let him keep a dog himself.

Various assistants with special needs have collaborated in our sessions, along with half a dozen participating dogs. All of them, the young people and the dogs, have a lot to say and to contribute.

They must be listened to, understood, and given the opportunity to enrich this new endeavor that has revolutionized my idea of special education.

One Puppy stirs a little, but a movement in any direction is enough to tell him that he is surrounded by warm fur and soft breathing. These peaceful sleeps go on, day after night after day as his eyes open and he becomes aware of the world outside his little family. He steps into the wide world unafraid, knowing he has the close, cozy contact with his littermates to protect him.

Jill Breitner has a simple solution: sleep with your puppy, at least for the first two weeks – better three – or as long as it needs. Take it into your bed with you and let it adapt naturally, without experiencing the trauma of losing its secure environment. According to Jill, a puppy will be struggling without security after experiencing a huge life change. At night they stir to look for reassurance. If they don’t find it they become worried, and that’s when they urinate, out of anxiety. But provide it with your physical presence, and the comforting sound of your breathing, and the puppy will sleep throughout the night.

En la habitación había una manta con una botella de agua caliente para simular el calor de los compañeros de camada y un reloj para simular el latido del corazón. Muy bien, pero yo pensaba ¿por qué hay que hacer todo eso? Mejor dejarle dormir con el calor de mi cuerpo y el sonido de mi corazón. De joven yo ya tenía claro que la seguridad era clave para cualquier animal recién nacido”.

Jill ofrece estas alternativas: “Puedes dormir en el suelo de otra habitación (consigue un cómodo colchón o futón para una corta duración) o puedes montarlo en tu propia habitación. Otra opción es usar una caja o un trasportín sin la parte superior. Pones unas mantas viejas, o una base cómoda, para que se acurruque y lo colocas junto a tu cama, de modo que puedas acariciarlo para consolarlo cuando busque calor y sonidos reconfortantes”.

Una vez, el perro de un cliente estaba pasando una mala época, y descubrimos que la causa era que era una perra de pelo muy corto, una Viszla, y que necesitaba una cama en la que pudiera calentarse. No era una cuestión de seguridad, sino tener suficiente calor como para dormir profundamente.

Mom’s friend had called out her name and approached her, but Shizuka was spooked and ran away towards a forested area, downhill again in the opposite direction. At least we knew she was okay and had an idea of her whereabouts, so we headed to that area. It was late afternoon and growing darker as we cruised the zone, calling her name. A half hour into this, just when we were about to give up, we spotted a white flash far off in a densely-treed area. Slowly we drove up to that area, mindful of startling her once more, then stopped and called her name repeatedly. We spied her a way off, peeking from behind a rock. Frozen, staring at us. Then our cries must have registered, because suddenly she started to run towards the car, picking up speed as she approached. So fast that when she leaped through the open door her little body hit us like a sack of potatoes had been thrown at us. The reunion was joyous. Once at home, she greeted the other dogs, the cats, everyone, with ecstatic jumps and exhilarated yips.

We were quite sure she had been coming uphill on her way home before Mom’s friend had inadvertently startled her into turning back into the woods again. Such a clever girl, we thought, she must have instinctively known the way. But we never put our theory to the test and were careful never to lose her again.

Sin embargo, no tiene sentido llamarla por su nombre: se ha vuelto sorda. Empezó hace aproximadamente un año y ha llegado al punto en que solo tocarla o realizar un fuerte estímulo visual (como encender y apagar las luces varias veces) llama su atención. Entonces, suele ocurrir que, a la hora de comer, uno de nosotros grita automáticamente, “¡Shizuka!” cuando llega su turno de comer. Y alguien más comenta lo obvio: “No puede oírte, ¿no te acuerdas?”. Entonces debes ir a buscarla, registrar sus lugares favoritos para dormir, y tocarla con delicadeza o ponerle los dedos con aroma a comida delante de la nariz, hasta que ella lo nota. Luego puedes utilizar el gesto con la mano que acaba de aprender (un movimiento de la mano con la palma hacia adentro, los dedos moviéndose hacia ti) y te sigue como un cordero. Aunque puede darse el caso que ella te mire y se dé vuelta, como una diva, porque a veces no tiene hambre.

Ya teníamos dos perros cuando la adoptamos. Alguien la había dejado en el aparcamiento del parque de atracciones, era muy pequeña y estaba muy asustada. La llevamos a casa y ella estaba muy callada, era extremadamente educada. Es por eso que la llamamos Shizuka, que en japonés significa tranquilo o calmado. Siempre le ha tenido un poco de miedo a las personas, pero se entusiasma con ellas una vez que las conoce.

A Shizuka le encantan los viajes en automóvil, el viaje en sí mismo la entusiasma, y si el viaje conduce a algo interesante o no, es secundario. Solo subirse al coche, incluso si eso significa que solamente hay que ir para recoger a alguien en la escuela o en la estación sin que ella se baje del vehículo, es un gran placer. Ella aprendió rápidamente la rutina a una edad temprana: es tarde/noche, el teléfono suena, Mamá habla con una hija poniéndose de acuerdo para la hora y el lugar de recogida, y agarra las llaves del coche. En un primer momento, Mamá decía: “Vamos chica, al coche”. Pero pronto Shizuka dejó de esperar una invitación, y al sonido de las llaves, comenzó a esperar alegremente en la puerta. Con el tiempo Mamá notó que Shizuka comenzaba a emocionarse en cuanto el teléfono sonaba. ¡Eso sí es aprender a reconocer las señales previas! En las ocasiones en que Mamá no recibía una llamada telefónica, porque los detalles de la recogida habían sido previamente decididos, Mamá se inclinaba sobre una Shizuka adormilada y le susurraba una sola palabra al oído: “Coche”. Eso era suficiente para hacer que Shizuka saltase, se dirigiese hacia la puerta y corriese hacia el coche en tan-solo un instante. Ahora sus articulaciones están algo doloridas y debe ser llevada dentro y fuera del automóvil. Sin embargo, el entusiasmo por el viaje en coche nunca la ha abandonado.

regulada y los animales no fueron ni sedados ni anestesiados. Los perros y otros animales fueron sometidos a agudos dolores, sufrimientos y finalmente a la muerte, a manos de médicos y sus estudiantes.

Muchos de los científicos, aunque conscientes de la inmoralidad de sus experimentos, sintieron que los obvios beneficios obtenidos a través de los avances en el conocimiento superaban su crueldad. Añadimos a esto la noción común de que los animales eran inferiores, no sensibles e incluso ajenos al dolor. “Sería extraño si reconociéramos el derecho del hombre a utilizar a los animales en todos los ámbitos de la vida: para el servicio doméstico, para la comida, y luego le prohibiéramos usarlos para su propia instrucción, en una de las ciencias más útiles para humanidad”.

La cruzada contra la vivisección del siglo XIX marcó el comienzo del actual movimiento por los derechos de los animales. Compuesto por las primeras feministas, líderes religiosos y humanistas, las guerreras más ruidosas eran las mujeres que consideraban la crueldad animal como una extensión de la opresión de los derechos de las mujeres por las mentes, plumas y bisturíes manejados por los hombres. La guerra estaba encendida: “Solía considerarlos mal informados, pero gente bien intencionada y de buen corazón. Sé que son fanáticos de corazón duro (como son los fanáticos), deliberados mentirosos e imprudentes ignorantes, que no merecen ninguna consideración y deben manejarse sin guantes”. (Dr. William J. Robinson, 1897).

El neurólogo estadounidense Charles L. Dana llegó al extremo de crear una enfermedad mental para describir a las personas que se oponían a la vivisección. La zoofil-psicosis (amor antinatural por los animales) era su término para la “locura obsesiva” que causaba que los laicos, en su mayoría mujeres, se opusieran a la práctica. Considerándose a sí mismo y a sus colegas como seres racionales y contemplativos, acuñó un término misógino y condescendiente para denigrar el creciente movimiento de oposición. El término zoofil-psicosis ganó terreno, incluso tanto como para la aparición de un artículo del New York Times en 1909, “La pasión por los animales es realmente una enfermedad”.

Pero el movimiento anti-vivisección, fundado en Europa y adoptado en América, tenía partidarios notables como la Reina Victoria, los escritores Leo Tolstoy, Charles Dickens, Mark Twain y el poeta Robert Browning. Con el inicio de los avances en psicología y medicina psiquiátrica, la enfermedad mental dejó de estar en el ámbito de la neurología. El término zoofil-psicosis, nunca demostrado por los profesionales de la salud mental, se convirtió en un término obsoleto. El fuerte movimiento anti-vivisección de hoy indica que los científicos y los activistas por los derechos de los animales no han dejado de debatir.

DOGS. A New Understanding of Canine Origin, Behavior, and Evolution.

Raymond Coppinger (b.1937 d.2017) was a man of curiosity – and how fortunate we are that he turned his mind to the subject of dogs. A biologist and behavioral ecologist, along with his wife Lorna he was also a dog breeder, a champion dog-sledder, and a valued educator. Together they wrote Dogs, one of the most valuable dog books on my shelf.

The breadth of the book is immense and the presentation both informative and entertaining.

Always from a biologist’s point of view, the authors observe, study and analyze dogs, focusing on the roles they play in our lives. Through a description of the village dogs of Mexico and India, they offer us their opinion on the origins of dog domestication.

Then they lead on to the biological principals behind working dogs, the environments that shape them, and the importance of their behavioral conformation.

Household dogs are given a lengthy, separate chapter. The authors barely rein in their exasperation whilst highlighting an eternal dilemma: the breeding of purebred pet dogs, which leads to the creation of sub-populations within the working dog breeds, isolating them from the larger population, to produce gorgeous pets that will live in – from the dog’s point of view – totally inadequate environments.

We learn that it is not possible to seek, generation after generation, ideal physical conformation (good looks, desired character traits) in conjunction with the working dog (behavioral) conformation. One will prevail. And then problems arise. Ask any dog trainer how many times they have been hired by a Border Collie’s owner to deal with “his ball obsession.”

The world of assistance dogs, and especially the breeding programs, is given a separate chapter. The authors are highly critical of the standard approaches to breeding, puppy-raising and adult dog training practices carried out by large assistance dog schools.

It concludes with the authors advising assistant dog schools to focus on the dogs’ development from day one; to rely less on genetic-base breeding programs and more on behavioral development.

And to provide long-term trainers the capacity to follow the dogs from puppyhood and throughout their working life.

Dogs is a fascinating insight into the world of our canine companions, their origin, and most importantly, how they have adapted to different human environments. It offers suggestions on how people and dogs can benefit in their mutual, multifaceted relationships. This is a book to keep, to consult on many occasions. My copy was signed by the Raymond Coppinger during his visit to Barcelona in 2010. I treasure it highly.

Raymond Coppinger (1937 - 2017) fue un hombre curioso, somos muy afortunados de que se dedicara al estudio del mundo de los perros. Biólogo y ecólogo del comportamiento, con su esposa Lorna, fue criador de perros, campeón de carreras de trineos y un importante educador. Juntos escribieron “Perros”, uno de los libros de perros más valiosos de mi estante.

La amplitud del libro es inmensa con una presentación informativa y entretenida. Los autores observan, estudian y analizan perros, centrándose en los roles que desempeñan en nuestras vidas y nos cuentan lo que encuentran - siempre desde el punto de vista biológico. A través de la descripción de los perros de las aldeas de México y la India, nos ofrecen su opinión sobre los orígenes de la domesticación del perro. Luego nos conducen a los principios biológicos subyacentes en los perros de trabajo, los entornos que los conforman y la importancia de su conformación conductual.

El mundo de los perros de asistencia, y especialmente los programas de crianza, se ven en un capítulo aparte. Los autores son muy críticos con los enfoques estándar de las prácticas de cría, la socialización de los cachorros y el adiestramiento de los adultos llevadas a cabo por grandes escuelas de perros de asistencia. En conclusión, los autores aconsejan a las escuelas que se centren en el desarrollo de los perros desde el primer día; confiar menos en los programas de mejora genética y más en el desarrollo del comportamiento. Y proporcionar a los educadores la posibilidad de seguir a los perros a largo plazo, desde su nacimiento y durante toda su vida laboral.

Los perros domésticos reciben un capítulo extenso y separado. Los autores apenas refrenan su exasperación al tiempo que destacan un eterno dilema: la crianza de perros de raza pura, que conduce a la creación de subpoblaciones dentro de las razas de perros de trabajo, aislándolos de la población en general, para producir hermosas mascotas que vivirán en ambientes - desde el punto de vista del perro - totalmente inadecuados.

Aprendemos que no es posible buscar, generación tras generación, una conformación física ideal (buena apariencia, rasgos de carácter deseados) junto con la conformación conductual de perro de trabajo. Una prevalecerá, y luego surgen los problemas: pregunte a cualquier educador canino cuántas veces ha sido contratado por el dueño de un Border Collie para lidiar con “su obsesión por la pelota”.

“Perros” es una visión fascinante del mundo de nuestros compañeros caninos, su origen y, lo más importante, cómo se han adaptado a diferentes entornos humanos. Ofrece sugerencias sobre cómo las personas y los perros se pueden beneficiar de sus relaciones mutuas y multifacéticas. Este es un libro para guardar, para consultar en muchas ocasiones.
