Thank you for choosing to partner with Monash Innovation Labs.
We are your on-campus innovation centre, connecting you with research and student talent, technology and world-class facilities to advance your manufacturing.
We can help you transform your manufacturing with Industry 4.0 technologies (like Digital Twins, Internet of Things and robotics); a highly skilled, adaptable workforce; and sustainable processes to reduce waste, optimise resources, and use more renewable energy.
With Monash Innovation Labs you can access:
• expertise for research, development and commercialisation
• student talent programs to build your emplo yment pipeline
• advanced facilities to revolutionise your manufacturing production and processes.
We look forward to reimagining the future of manufacturing in Australia with you.
MONASH UNIVERSITY recognises that its Australian campuses are located on the unceded lands of the people of the Kulin Nations, and pays its respects to their Elders, past and present.
WE CAN HELP YOU CONNECT TO…
Monash Innovation Labs will connect you to talented students aligned with your company’s objectives. Together you can harness the full potential of our purpose-built infrastructure, designed to foster innovation:
Explore the unique opportunities created by our research institutes and centres: 6
Our entrepreneurial and business services help you create connections and feel at home at Monash University:
Explore, refine and transform your manufacturing processes in a risk-free virtual environment – before you invest in new facilities.
Connect and integrate your manufacturing systems with advanced Industry 4.0 communications like collaborative robots and IoT devices.
Monash Smart Manufacturing allows you to create a virtual replica of your manufacturing or processing environments, and the modular framework enables systems to be rearranged quickly and efficiently.
Embrace the future of manufacturing as we help you to:
• SIMULATE AND OPTIMISE PROCESSES
Trial new production lines and equipment like 3D printers and CNC machines in a risk-free environment.
• IMPROVE EFFICIENCIES
Deploy our AI algorithms to reduce downtime, detect faults, lower waste and improve quality assurance procedures.
• AUTOMATE TRAINING AND MAINTENANCE
Streamline inductions, system training and machine maintenance using mixed reality tools like AR and VR.
• GAIN CENTRALISED CONTROL
Remotely operate hazardous environments, such as offshore rigs and nuclear facilities. And gain real-time system control and communication with centralised dashboards.
Monitor human interactions and building performance to improve your operational efficiencies and safeguard staff wellbeing. Imagine a dynamic digital ecosystem that integrates a network of smart sensors to promote sustainable, healthy indoor spaces.
Monash Smart Infrastructure examines interactions between humans, the built environment and robotic systems. Think lights that turn off and doors that lock when people leave a room.
We’ll create a 3D Building Information Modeling model of your physical infrastructure and environment – tracking inputs like mobility, air quality and energy usage. The real-time virtual replica will facilitate enhanced building design to boost performance, optimise energy efficiency and improve workplace safety. The ecosystem is underpinned by the Digital Twin: Enabler and it’s the engine that feeds into the Digital Twin: Visualisation Lab.
Learn how to enhance your chemical and biological processes by exploring our interconnected physical and digital versions of the Monash Water Treatment Pilot Plant. And you’ll see how the same technologies – such as smart sensors, AI and machine learning – can supercharge your own processes.
Engage with our experts and collaborate with student teams to explore new innovations. Then build and test your designs at bench and pilot scale in the Analytical Lab and the Monash Smart Processing space. This allows you to test, optimise and scale your chemical and biological processes before investing in physical infrastructure. Monash Smart Processing facility demonstrates how augmented reality and digital twins can improve product quality, troubleshooting, design, simulation and training. Gain the space, equipment and expertise to convert your chemical and biological concepts into reality.
We manage placements from end to end, to ensure hosts and students are prepared, supported, and have an optimal experience.

Our collaborative research has led to creating the world’s first self-calibrated photonic chip, revolutionising the connectivity of current optical chips and replacing bulky 3D-optics with a wafer-thin slice of silicon. This work has been published in Nature Photonics, and as one of the authors, I feel honoured to be involved in the project.”

Additive Manufacturing (AM) applies diverse research disciplines such as materials science, engineering, and structural design to tackle manufacturing challenges that would be intractable using traditional techniques. The process of AM prints new components layer by layer, creating structures with complex geometries, based solely on computer drawings. The layers are made from metal powders including titanium, nickel, and lithium, as well as aluminium and steel alloys. AM is a key component of Industry 4.0, with applications in the aerospace, rail, and advanced manufacturing industries. In the healthcare sector it is used to design and produce bespoke biomedical implants with outstanding performance, based on customer specifications.
AM is gaining traction in the industrial sector thanks to its ability to create complex structures without escalating costs, and to control material distribution within structures. Notably, AM is a digitally driven process, eliminating the need for additional fixtures. This approach marks a major shift in manufacturing capabilities.
Our Analytical Lab is a fully-resourced collaborative space where industry partners can access state-of-the-art analytical instruments. Sustainability is a key component in our operations, to ensure we reduce the environmental impact of our operations. We aim to be an exemplar of environmental best practice within Monash University.
In cooperation with our industry partners and alignment with the Monash University sustainability strategy, we reduce, reuse or recycle waste whenever practicable. As a Monash University and Monash Innovation Labs partner, you will have access to the following waste recycling streams in our facilities:
Mixed recycling and landfill bins can be found across the Monash Innovation Labs and campus. All items put into the recycling bins must be free of food waste.
There are separate processes to recycle clean paper and cardboard at Monash. The most important thing when recycling paper and cardboard is to remove all contamination. Cardboard can be recycled by placing in skips located around Monash Innovation Labs. Alternatively, flattened small cardboard boxes can be left at kitchen bins. For collection of larger quantities, talk to the concierge service. Locked paper bins in Monash Innovation Labs can be used for secure destruction of your confidential documents.
Industry partners have the option to recycle expanded polystyrene (EPS) and expanded polyethylene (EPE) through a specialised separate collection where material is sent to a local processing facility.
Monash University has a shop where you can find a large variety of second-hand quality furniture at savings of between 60 – 90% off the recommended retail price. Monash Innovation Labs industry partners are encouraged to shop or donate their furniture. Refer to the map to visit the store.
Use the landfill bins for your food waste unless there is a dedicated food waste bin available. We encourage industry partners to minimise food waste, but for small scale clean-up after events, industry partners can use the landfill bins. If the food waste from larger events is extensive, talk to the Concierge service to organise collection via a separate external contractor.
(chemical or clinical waste)
Monash Innovation Labs industry partners can safely dispose of small alkaline and lithium battery waste using Monash battery buckets available at our facility. As per Monash University’s Chemical Disposal Procedure, you can dispose of your company’s chemical and clinical waste through our certified contractor, or choose your own accredited contractor.
Through our Concierge service, coreflute and flute board polypropylene sheets are collected and managed by the Monash Buildings and Property Division. Coreflute must be clean and dry with all contaminants removed.
