Noël WAN Harp Aviary Concept

Throughout history, the beautiful sounds of birds have inspired the music of human beings. However, birds make these sounds to communicate with each other. Short bird calls are used to warn each other predators; to make quick contact; to say, “I’m hungry” or “I’m over here.” More complex, long vocalizations—birdsongs—are often used to defend territory or attract mates. In short, what humans hear as music is really the birds’ way of connecting and talking to each other. I was inspired by this idea of music as a form of communication and created a program that tells the story of a journey. Along this journey, we travel to different worlds and meet different birds, each telling a story of their own.

We begin with the image of the lark, which is associated with the early morning because it begins to sing before the sun rises. After Mikhail Glinka’s “The Lark” wakes us, we feel a sense of anticipation for the new day, full of activities and chatting with people. We can hear this busyness in Jean-Philippe Rameau’s famous piece for harpsichord, “The Meeting of the Birds.” One of the important reasons birds communicate is they fly around and sometimes travel long distances, especially during the winter. Michael Maudlin’s “Birds in Winter” captures the movement of birds: sometimes energetic but sometimes tired, just as we feel when we are in motion.

Where do these birds in winter take us? To the magical aviary, of course. In contrast to birds escaping the cold winter, I imagine the birds in Marcel Tournier’s “The Magical Aviary” to be colorful tropical ones: the peacock, quetzal, bird-of-paradise, and the flamingo. These exotic birds allow us to enter a fantastical world, which we continue to explore through the tragic myth of Harpalycé. Harpalycé is a woman who goes through a traumatic incident and is forced to bear the child of her own father. The Greek gods take compassion on her by turning her into a chalkis, or night owl. After Constant’s music plunges us into this gloomy feeling, we hear the song of the nightingale in Enrique Granados’ “Lament: The Girl and the Nightingale.” The nightingale is unique in that it sings during the night, providing us with beauty in darkness and hope in difficult times. The program ends with the black swan—the most iconic representative of beauty in darkness—in a unique arrangement of Heitor Villa-Lobos’ “The Song of the Black Swan.”

Harpist Noël WAN

Lauded as “a huge talent with hidden power and amazing maturity” (Bart van Oort) and “not [a harpist] to be slept on” (The Globe and Mail), Taiwanese-American harpist Noël Wan (1994) made her international debut with the Utrecht Symphony Orchestra in 2010. An acclaimed soloist, she has performed across three continents and has been featured at Carnegie Hall, het Muziekgebouw, Eslite Hall, and the Yellow Barn Summer Festival. Her 2023-24 engagements include presented by Debut Atlantic, Astral Artists, the Taiwan Harp Festival, Evergreen Concert Series, and American Harp Society. Highly sought as a teacher, she is currently the Assistant Professor of Harp and Entrepreneurship at Florida State University—a position she won in 2022 following an international search—and gives masterclasses around the world.

Noël is a winner of the 2023 Astral Artists National Competition; the only Taiwanese harpist to win Gold Medal in the USA International Harp Competition, one of the world’s most prestigious harp competitions; and the youngest First Prize winner in the World Harp Competition’s history. Other distinctions include a special award from the International Harp Contest in Israel and top prizes in the Carmel Music Society Competition, Nippon International Harp Competition, Korea International Harp Competition, and Prix Orford Musique. Additionally, she has been supported by the Chimei Arts Foundation, the Presser Foundation, and the Ontario Arts Council.

Born in the California Bay Area to Taiwanese parents, Noël and her husband, Canadian choral conductor Patrick Murray, now divide their time between Toronto, Ontario and Tallahassee, Florida.
