DOOR FURNITURE technical information

Contained in this section is the most comprehensive range of door furniture and fittings brought together in one catalogue. We have not only included a multitude of design variations, but also offer products suitable for all types of environment, be it a high tech office environment, school, hospital, residential or heavy industrial area. The location and usage of a project will have a bearing on the type of door furniture specified. Stainless steel and aluminium are well suited to most types of high traffic or heavy duty environments. Stainless steel is available in 2 grades, 304 and 316. 316 grade stainless steel products are ideally suited for use in swimming pool or coastal environments. Brass is a material that requires regular attention to maintain it’s appearance. It should not be subjected to heavy use or harsh environments. It’s finish should be well protected during the commissioning stages of a building project. Brass lever and pull handles are protected by the application of an electrophoretic stove lacquer. Unlacquered brass is available on request. If unlacquered brass is used, it will require regular polishing. Our push plates and kicking plates are supplied unlacquered. Real BMA and Polished Bronze products are available to give a more traditional finish. Nylon products are offered in a wide range of colours. The nylon material is very strong and resiliant making it suitable for use in areas where it will be subjected to heavy usage. As the nylon product is coloured right through it cannot be chipped off and scratches can simply be polished away using a manufacturers renovation kit.

Remember to take into account the additional weight of the door hardware when calculating the weight of the hinged door leaf. Hinges for fire doors must have a melting point in excess of 800°C. The majority of hinges comply with this requirement, however, we recommend that you refer to our technical department for clarification.

In accordance with BS4787 part 1, three hinges per leaf should be fitted. If weight carrying is a major requirement, a pair of hinges should be fitted high up the door and one near the bottom. Equally spaced hinges should be fitted when resistance to fire and warping is important. On doors over 2110mm high where a fourth hinge is fitted, equal spacing should be used for resistance to warping and fire and two pairs fitted high and low for weight carrying.

The correct specification of hinges is essential and great attention should be paid not only to the size and weight of the door but also the frequency of the traffic that will pass through it. The best guide to hinge performance is past experience, but from time to time problems occur which are outside our normal experience and a guide is then very useful. We have now classified many of our hinges and we recommend their use within these classifications. The table below when cross-referenced with the products in this section will ensure that the correct hinges are specified.

Cylinder Systems All our cylinders can be provided in varying levels of physical and key control, ranging from a basic 5 pin system up to the highest possible level of patent protected registered security. Suitable for MOD use. We recommend that our Technical Department be contacted to determine the most appropriate security level for your building. Lock Forends Square forends are supplied as standard on all lock cases with the exception of the ASSA modular range which are available with round forends only. Radiused forends are available on most locks to order. Rebate Conversion Kits Rebate sets are available for most of the lock cases illustrated in 13mm & 25mm. Introduction The Building Regulations 1991 “Access and facilities for disabled people” Approved Document M. Building regulations are made for the specific purposes: health and safety, energy conservation and the welfare and convenience of disabled people. Standards and technical approvals are relevant guidance to the extent that they relate to these considerations. However, they may also address other aspects of performance such as serviceability, or aspects which although they relate to health and safety are not covered by the regulation.

Performance In the Secretary of State’s view the requirements of Part M will be met by making it reasonably safe and convenient for disabled people to: a
