Marine Insurance Tips

1) Current Trends in Marine Insurance:

We are presently in a tough market for marine insurance, especially on vessels over 30 feet and over 15 years of age.

South Florida is considered to be a higher risk area with theft issues, coastal hurricane exposure, a litigious environment, among other factors.

Within the last few months, a couple of yacht insurance carriers have begun non-renewing policies and have pulled out of the State of Florida entirely, pushing some vessels into the surplus lines market (known as non-admitted carriers). A non-admitted carrier is less regulated by the State insurance department, not financially backed by the Florida Insurance Guarantee Association “FIGA”, and can raise and lower rates and make

policy changes (at renewal---not mid-term of a policy period) more easily as the market dicatates. In general, it is better to obtain insurance with an “Admitted” carrier, but often this is not possible.

Another current trend is for some insurance providers to require vessels not be kept on a lift during a hurricane. It may seem like a lift is a safe place to secure a vessel, BUT loss experience has shown that lifts are not designed to handle the torque and wind load of a powerful storm.

Another issue with securing a vessel to a lift is storm surge, where the water raises up and over or into the vessel.

2) Tips on getting the lowest rate:

There are a few things that help boaters obtain the lowest rate possible. Completing a boating

20
www.lmufl.com • 954-678-2668

safety course, or obtaining a Captain’s license, are both good ways. On smaller vessels most insurance companies give credit for having prior insurance, having favorable credit, being claim free, owning a home, and having a safe place to moor/store the vessel.

On larger vessels and those over 10 years of age, an in and out of water survey is most often required every three years (some carriers require within the last 18 months). It is important to keep this in mind, next time you have the vessel hauled out for annual maintenance, in case it is time for a new survey.

On high value vessels and most importantly vessels with multiple outboard engines, it is normally required that the vessel have a GPS theft tracking device—and that the device have a current monitoring contract in effect at the time of a loss.

3) Hurricane Preparedness

It is vital to have a hurricane plan in place. Most seasoned boat owners and those who have been through a hurricane are more familiar with the process than newer boaters. Hauling a vessel out of the water and securing it inside a building or next to a house on a trailer is a good idea. If a vessel will remain in the water, remove all loose covers & canvas, lower or remove outriggers, antennas, etc. Some insurance carriers exclude coverage if a vessel is on a lift during a storm (check your policy). Plan in advance and have a backup plan if needed.

4) Things not

to claim:

Insurance is meant to provide protection

for catastrophic loss, and is not designed to be a maintenance plan. A small scratch in the gelcoat or a minor dent on a prop should be taken care of out of pocket. It often saves a significant amount of money to carry higher deductibles and self insure for smaller issues.

5) Why it is more expensive to title a vessel in a Corporation

or LLC

Be aware that some insurance companies charge extra premium if a vessel is not titled in an individual name. A corporation/trust/LLC is a different type of entity, often with other exposures, and although these could be a way to protect assets and limit liability, this is not always the case. In addition to possible added premium, there is also a cost to setup and maintain a corporation, extra tax return, etc.

- Smart Yet Simple Skin Treatment

THE SOFWAVE SIMPLE SOLUTION Next Generation Facial Treatment (https://sofwave.com/)

From the founders of the aesthetic industry, Sofwave Medical brings a novel approach to skin tightening using SUPERB™ Synchronous Ultrasound Parallel Beam Technology.

Sofwave’s breakthrough technology delivers a new standard of care to aesthetic treatments, providing safe aesthetic treatments for patients.

SMART Yet SIMPLE Skin Treatment

• Multiple ultrasound beams technology provides high levels of coverage with each pulse

• Proven clinical efficacy

• Simple, intuitive, and fast treatment — improves practice patient workflow

EXCEPTIONAL Safety Profile

• Integrated epidermis cooling Sofcool™

• Real-time skin temperature monitoring

• Treats all skin types

• No damage to the underlying structures

HIGH Patient Satisfaction

• Non-invasive, no interruption to daily routine

• Fast treatment: ~30 to 45 minutes

• Consistent results

Sofwave is an FDA cleared, non-invasive treatment of fine lines and wrinkles using a next generation SUPERB™ Synchronous Ultrasound Parallel Beam Technology.

The fractional heating effect created by Sofwave’s unique ultrasound delivery, stimulates the production of new collagen and elastin which leads to the reduction in fine lines and wrinkles.

HOW DOES SOFWAVE WORK?

The depth for treating wrinkles is 1.5mm in the mid-dermis. Our unique, Synchronous Ultrasound Parallel Beam SUPERB™ technology generates heat at this exact depth in the mid-dermis. Additionally, there is an integrated cooling mechanism Sofcool ™ that protects the uppermost skin layer from burning.

The impacted treatment zones stimulate a healing response, called neo-collagenases, which increases and regenerates the collagen in the skin, leading to the reduction in fine lines and wrinkles.

HOW IS SOFWAVE BETTER THAN OTHER EXISTING TECHNOLOGIES?

Today there are various energy-based technologies designed to treat facial lines and wrinkles. Aggressive options (such as lasers) can cause significant damage to the skin surface, leading to a long healing period, considerable downtime and may have a high risk of side effects. Even RF micro needling treatments, that have recently become popular, can be uncomfortable, risky and require downtime.

Gentler, non-invasive solutions (such as IPL and noninvasive RF) have shown limited efficacy, and in most cases, require multiple treatments. Sofwave’s unique technology enables the controlled delivery of energy, in terms of amount and location, while protecting the skin surface with an integrated cooling mechanism. Even better, there is no downtime.

HOW MANY TREATMENTS ARE NEEDED?

Typically, the treatment protocol calls for 1-2 treatments, depending on the patient’s skin condition.

WHAT DOES THE SOFWAVE TREATMENT FEEL LIKE?

As the ultrasound energy is delivered, you may feel warmness of the skin. Treatment is comfortable simply by applying a topical anesthetic cream just prior to the treatment. Following the treatment, there are no sensations and there is no need to apply special care on the skin. Daily care can be resumed immediately post treatment.

WHEN CAN I EXPECT TO SEE RESULTS?

The collagen regeneration process can sometimes take up to 12 weeks, so patients are expected to see ongoing improvements in the 3-month period after their treatment.

In Sofwave’s clinical trials, results have been shown in as little as, post one treatment.

ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS WITH SOFWAVE?

Sofwave is a non-invasive treatment for skin tightening. Clinical trials have shown the technology to be effective and safe.

Immediately post treatment, the skin may appear slightly red with limited swelling for up to a few hours post treatment. For more question visit Sofwave FAQ (https://sofwave.com/physicians/faq/)

the Body

At Performance Hydration we focus on rehydrating, restoring and regenerating the whole body from inside out. We use only top tier pharmaceutical grade nutrients and minerals in our extensive menu of IV Therapies, to help rehydrate and turn back time, for that anti-aging, youthful look and feel we all crave. Being on the water for a good portion of the day, the sun and atmosphere naturally deplete us of our proper hydration and vitamins. Between the food we consume today and alcoholic beverages, the effects are felt that much faster and greater. Being boaters ourselves, we can speak to the truth on this! We love the water, love boating, fishing, and cocktails at sunset; however, as Registered Nurses, we also understand how critically important proper rehydration is! We also take active steps in protecting our reefs and waterways, by being distributors of Stream2Sea, a both eco conscience and biodegradable sun skin care product line, locally founded and sourced. Tips for Protecting Marine Life

As you enjoy Southwest Florida’s beaches and coastal waters, please be vigilant for marine animals and follow the best practices below to avoid harming sea turtles, dolphins and manatees. These tips matter year ‘round — especially during the summer boating season, when sea turtles are swimming just offshore to mate and coming ashore to nest, and dolphins and manatees are also on the move for breeding and feeding. Sea turtles, dolphins and manatees are all protected by federal law. 1600

WHAT WE DO

Our four-decades plus study of the Sarasota dolphin community continues.

Studying dolphins throughout the seasons and throughout their lives, has helped us know how to protect them.

In 1970, the question was “do they reside here, or do they just pass through?” Now the questions are more complex as we study a wild dolphin community in what has become a natural laboratory.

Our international team of veterinarians and researchers collaborates to conducts health assessments as warranted by scientific and management needs, and the results are shared widely. The health assessments have helped to identify the impact on pollution on dolphins by comparison with other sites. They also advance veterinary knowledge of how to treat sick dolphins, in the wild and in captivity.

Studying dolphins throughout the seasons and throughout their lives, has helped us know how to protect them.

Pioneering the use of systematic long-term dolphin surveys, we have learned about dolphin social behavior and habitat needs. This work continues year round.

We have also led on field research to help determine the natural and humancaused threats to dolphin lives and health.

We believe we have the responsibility to rescue individual dolphins that need our help when physically endangered by human causes.

Our communication and acoustic experiments expand our understanding of dolphin ecology and conservation needs.

28

As part of the research effort, SDRP help extends nationally and internationally, and the SDRP is a training ground for biologists and conservation scientist from around the world. We also test new gear and techniques that assist dolphin and whale researchers and rescuers world-wide. Part of this effort includes tracking the movements of dolphins and whales with satellitelinked transmitters. We study their movements to collect transmitted data on dive patterns, and we test tag and attachment designs to make them safer and more effective.

A dolphin’s locations in the Sarasota Bay study area during one week. Each dot represents a location reported via satellite-linked tag. The quality of the data received via satellites may vary, so that some locations are less accurate (and sometimes even appear to be on shore).

Where There is Smoke…

A few days after returning from a weeklong excursion, the sailboat owners unpacked their vessel and cleaned it to a beautiful sheen. After appreciating their efforts, they got in their car and returned home.

The following week, they returned, slowly stepped down into the cabin…and were stunned beyond disbelief. The cabin smelled of smoke and the dusty appearance of soot was in the air and on just about everything.

Once they composed themselves, they employed a surveyor to investigate. The report surmised that lightning must have struck the water very near the dock, and it found its way through the electrical system. It didn’t appear to have developed into a full blaze, but rather a slow sinister smoldering that likely lasted for hours if not days.

The boatowners attempt to clean their beloved sailboat were both daunting and exhausting. It was August, therefore the hottest of days. Remedies, including vinegar just weren’t proving effective. The insurance carrier recommended calling a restoration company. But which one?

After considering a few options, PuroClean was hired to remove the odor and soot from the affected living quarters. PuroClean is known as the “Paramedics of Property Damage”, and their Bradenton location happens to be owned by a boater, so this job hit close to home. As restoration experts, PuroClean knows that a fire requires a multi-prong approach.

30

To remove the odor, PuroClean used a hydroxyl generator, since they understood that an ozone machine would break down the sailboat’s rubber over time.

PuroClean also applied specialty products that focused on the chemistry of soot and cleaned the air using a HEPA air scrubber. Lastly, the entire cabin (all cavities open) was fogged with a sanitizing deodorizer. After the mechanic replaced the electrical system, she is once again, ready to sail to her next adventure, renewed, fresh and odor free. The owners were simply amazed by the results.

PuroClean addresses many boaters’ concerns regarding their living quarters. Services include deep cleaning, odor removal, mold mitigation and drying water leaks. Additionally, PuroClean can apply a COVID disinfectant, for further peace of mind. If you ever find yourself in such a situation don’t forget to callPuroClean of Bradenton (941) 877-2288
