The Hurricane Sunset offers a more secluded sunset cruise.
Boating is a pastime that offers relaxation, adventure, and a sense of freedom. However, for many boating can lead to back and neck pain. The repetitive motion of waves, prolonged sitting, and awkward positions can all contribute to spinal discomfort.
position strains the cervical (neck) and lumbar (lower back) regions. Without proper ergonomic support or breaks to stretch, tension builds and mobility decreases.
One of the most common causes of boating-related back and neck pain is vibration and impact from rough water. When a boat hits waves, the body absorbs the shock—often through the spine. This repetitive jarring can strain muscles, compress discs, and lead to stiffness or chronic pain. Poor seating and inadequate support can further aggravate the situation, especially during long trips.
Another major factor is posture. Many boaters hunch forward when steering, looking down at instruments or over the bow. This
To reduce the risk of pain, boaters should prioritize supportive seating with shock absorption and lumbar support. Taking frequent breaks to stand, stretch, or move around can improve circulation and reduce stiffness. Staying hydrated also supports spinal health, as dehydration can affect disc elasticity. Finally, core-strengthening exercises done off the boat can improve posture and reduce injury risk.
While boating should be a source of joy, it’s important to listen to your body. By understanding how boating impacts your back and neck—and taking simple preventive steps—you can enjoy smoother sailing and stay painfree on the water.

Do your muscles ache?
Do you need more energy?
Key West Wellness Center provides an alternative medicine approach to total wellness and a healthier lifestyle through Acupuncture, Massage, Vitamin Injections, Restorative Skin Care, Herbal Supplements and Weight Management. Our experienced staff, under the guidance of Dr. Ashley Hoyt, A.P. has many years of experience in offering our services to Key West. Dr. Hoyt is also an avid lover of our waters, boating, spear fishing and diving the Vandenberg as often as possible. A day on the water can be exhausting, causing balance and joint issues, dehydration and muscle soreness. By helping your body relax and recharge with proper treatments, acupuncture and massage can help ease your pain areas, relieve muscle tightness, decrease inflammation, reduce stress and improve circulation.
Acupuncture, deep tissue massage or trigger point massage will greatly help with flexibility and mobility. Most people who boat or fish have common complaints of soreness to the neck, shoulder blades and lower back. Muscles can also be
tight in the hands and forearms, hips, knees, hamstrings, and calves. They mainly suffer from muscle strains, inflammation and repetitive motion injuries while enjoying our beautiful waters or catching that trophy fish.
Relaxing the muscles helps the body move blood flow to the affected areas to reduce the soreness and help heal further injuries. Acupuncture works by stimulating the release of endorphins, the body’s natural feel-good chemicals, much like vigorous exercise does. By stimulating blood flow and tissue repair, this allows the body to heal itself. Acupuncture and massage can also reduce the risks of chronic and acute injuries, while shortening your recovery time so you can get back on the water quickly.
