Covid cases see dramatic rise
Covid cases ‘highest they’ve ever been’ as restrictions ease
By the third week of July the number of positive Coronavirus cases had risen almost seventeen-fold (1700%) on last month, with 550 reported in North Devon (300-plus in Mid Devon). Last month the figures were 30 and 25 respectively, and almost zero in April.

As we went to print, Devon’s health bosses said case rates were “the highest they have even been”, with the Delta variant spreading quickly, especially in those aged between 10 and 29. The ‘third wave’ has already had an impact, with local businesses forced to close temporarily due to staff isolations.
Steve Brown, Director of Public Health Devon, said, “Positive cases are rising across the UK and in Devon, driven by the much more contagious Delta variant.” “Coronavirus is an airborne virus. It spreads most easily when people are in close proximity and when indoors in poorly ventilated spaces.”
He says the public should continue to wear face coverings, practice social distancing and take extra hygiene steps - even though as of July 19th they were no longer due to be a legal requirement.
The mobile Covid-19 testing van (above) is now in South Molton between 9am to 12.30pm on Tuesdays and 1.30pm to 5pm on Fridays. Alongside regular testing everyone is urged to get vaccinated, especially those working in hospitality.
“Please continue choosing to take steps that minimise risk to ourselves and to others, even when that choice is ours to make,” added Steve Brown.
