Introduction:
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your journey in the entertainment industry? What inspired you to pursue a career in dance, singing, radio presenting, and other creative pursuits?
Nokuthula Ngomane known as Kcrazy Tee is a highly-driven radio broadcaster and hardworking professional in the film and acting industry. She is a researcher and content developer, and has worked with SABC on factual reality shows. She works with Sunrise Emandleni on developments and pitching workshops empowered by Gauteng and KZN film commission . Offline editor and post production manager for Modimolle documentary Aired on e.TV
Writer and director of a film school production that got university award nomination and an opportunity to be screened long side the legend John Khani’s work at the Amaphiko Red Bull film festival. She is also a founder of OHA films acting workshops, that partnered with the late DR Sam Phillips who received an honorary doctorate at the KZN university.
The natural world is full of unexpected wonders, and I have always been fascinated by how we as `humans’ connect with the universe. Through arts I have been able to express my feelings and thoughts.
When people dig a little deeper and ask questions, like why are you an artist, then we begin to tap-dance around questions that could simply be unanswered. I always say artists are born. It is the whispers in our heads and life experiences that evoke the creative process, we are healers of the mind and soul.
I have always been a story teller , I do that through different forms of art. Since sports was not an options for me back in my schooling days because I had a knee injury, I found solace in spoken words/ drama, music and dance. My inner feelings and imagination are a big part of my inspiration to create art. I remember the first time I heard an excellent poet [My teacher] reciting a great piece, I immediately got drawn to the flow and the powerful use of words. He let the words do the work. I was inspired to use my beautiful voice to tell and report stories. My love for arts also comes from admiring and appreciating other artists work.
Dance and Performance:
What sparked your passion for dance, and how has it evolved over the years?
Can you share some of your most memorable performances or projects as a dancer?
How do you approach choreography and artistic expression in your dance routines?
I like to dance for some weird reason, dancing liberate me. I can express myself through dance, I think the magic is in the music. Dancing help me understand my emotions.
In my teenage years I moved to Soweto where dance has always been street culture. We had a lot of dance battles going on around my hood and I thought it would be nice to be part of a dance crew and be lead by a dance master.
That’s were my passion for dance took a serious turn. I attended competition and battles and met some of the best dancers in the country like Vukani, Adonis Donna and MM Rockers just to mention a few. But like I said, the magic has always been in the music, there is something about melodic sounds that my body can’t resist. When we dance, we connect with music that affect our bodies, thoughts, and our minds. It wasn’t long till I discovered a theatre group at school and I went for auditions. I recited that powerful poem I heard from my teacher, and Guess what? I passed my audition at the first try. That piece bagged me a lot of jobs in the acting and presenting industry. I realized that theatre was a place of multi-talents and that’s where I belonged. I got introduce to the life of stage plays and performance, my career took off from there. I performed at the Market theatre , schools and community halls, it soon escalated to local TV movies and Radio Ads . I have also mastered method acting because of the training I received.
What role does music play in your life, and how does it influence your creative process?
Can you tell us about your experiences as a singer and any notable performances or recordings?
How do you balance your time between dance and music, and do you find any overlap between the two art forms?
There is a famous quote that says : “when music hits you, you feel no pain”. That is the role music play in my life, it improves my response to pain, and helps me work more effective. Music has the power to recall memories. I have noticed that music always spark new creative ideas in scripting movies and adverts for brands. Different genres can evoke strong emotions and memories, which helps me to trigger new ideas.
My love for singing comes from deep within my soul, Singings always let me release the tension held within . I love the adrenaline rush that comes with music performance infused with dance. Ever since I was a child, I always had an interest in owning and performing my own music. Though I am shy and still get nervous, performance is my escape to a world of imagination and joy. My first ever song was written in grade four, it was a school project and I remember my art teacher couldn’t believe that was a fresh idea, she thought the song already existed. In 2012 I got introduced to a professional studio where I started as backup vocalist for other musicians and gradually got into features, soon after that I recorded my first song with Tronix DJ who has worked with the likes of Arthur Mafokate, Yvonne Chaka Chaka and many more. I enjoy the creative process of writing and rehearsing for performances, it’s my source of joy and fulfilment, but the cherry on top is always in my live performances. It allows me to share my creation with the world and connect with my audience on a deeper level. Music and dance releases chemicals in my brain that makes me feel invincible, this rush allows me to fully experience joy and accomplishment, and is a feeling that makes all of the preperformance nerves worth it.
How did you transition into radio presenting, and what do you enjoy most about hosting your own show?
As a scriptwriter, what inspires your storytelling and content creation process? Can you share any tips or insights for aspiring radio presenters or scriptwriters looking to break into the industry?
Radio broadcasting helped me to find my voice and to be the voice of the voiceless. It came at a time when I needed to understand my values, believes and principles. I was in a very dark space in my life, I was tired of camera’s and live performances, but I still wanted to be an artist that healed through her voice. I had an edge to connect with my people but didn’t have the energy and joy to be in front of the camera, that’s where radio rescued my career. I have always been a presenter and an MC, so transitioning to radio wasn’t that much of a struggle, I had to adjust just a little few things [ technical aspect and the radio presenting style/pace]. The platform is so powerful, it’s ability to engage listeners through sound, reach a wide and diverse audience, and its great emotional connection sets it apart from other media forms. I host a lifestyle show that features fashion and travel segments which are things I love the most as a fashion show redcarpet presenter, and a lover of travelling and learning new cultural practices and traditional cuisines.
The world of broadcasting is unpredictable, always do your research and keep updated on current affair and any trending news because you are the source of information for your community. Be accurate as possible with any topic , otherwise , there’ll be a horde of people waiting to immediately dismiss you for what could have been an honest mistake. If you want to avoid mistakes like this, read your scripts beforehand and rehearse them. Don’t be prejudiced , your behaviour as a presenter doesn’t just affect you, you are representing the entire station every time you’re on air.
What led you to pursue camera operation, and how do you approach capturing visuals for various projects?
As an MC, how do you engage and connect with your audience during events and performances?
What are some of the challenges and rewards of working behind the scenes as a camera operator and stepping into the spotlight as an MC?
My authenticity is very appealing to audiences. As a presenter I stay true to my roots even when I am on a worldwide level. I always do my research on the type of event I will be hosting and adjust my language and energy accordingly . Staying grounded and maintaining a humble attitude and level perspective has always secured me more gigs. Dressing nicely, being on time or earlier and acting professionally puts faith in others that I know what I am doing. It is important to be friendly with everyone and make your audience feel good.
I went to a film school [Tshwane University of Technology] where I acquired useful film skills like producing, writing, camera work and editing which helped me to navigate my way in the media industry. I registered my own film company which produces local movies for Mzansi Bioskop and other media streams. As time went by, my writing got better and I started producing not only for my company but for other companies too and individuals who had ideas but didn’t know how to turn those ideas into a concept, that’s where I assist, in developing ideas into compelling stories that will capture the viewer attention and evoke emotions . I also ventured into offline editing because it was a skill I had picked up in film school, and the editing software is as interesting as a video game, very addictive.
• Let’s talk about camera work, first thing , a camera is every girls best friend and I am easily attracted to beautiful things , as a result I capture a lot of pictures and videos. You see, when you run your own company, you are sort of expected to take care of almost everything while still building and growing the brand. Film school and access to equipment came in handy at the time, because I made sure that I don’t limit my learning and exploring different department/ fields. Clients and brands are always satisfied with projects I do with them, both in front and behind the scenes. I shoot & edit most of the paying projects in my company.
With such a diverse skill set, how do you manage to balance your various roles and commitments? Do you have any strategies for staying organized and focused when juggling multiple projects?
How do you nurture your creativity and maintain your passion for your craft amidst a busy schedule?
I am often switching between being a Filmmaker, broadcaster/presenter, and musician. Understanding that one of the best way to gain experience is often to get out there and do it yourself, I have been able to apply the knowledge I gained from working with the likes of SABC, Mzansi Bioscop, e.TV, SAUMA HD Radio just to mention a few. Being organized is always a key to managing the pressure that comes with doing multiple things, one must be a forward thinker, a problem solver and confident, and I’d like to believe I carry those traits. And also I try not to commit to too many jobs at the same time, I prioritize and plan.
I always say the producer in me is a character I was born with, I excel in this department. I remember back in varsity it was always on the top 5 list in my class, I don’t know how I did it, but the tests and exam results were always high and that was proof to me that I naturally understood the department, hence the entrepreneur in me. Now I have produced so many projects that were successful. The film industry has benefited me a lot, I am nothing without arts and the creative in me.
My Radio shows are during weekdays between Mon-Wed which gives me a chance to attend to other commitments. My biggest challenge has to be self funding and being almost every crew member of some of my company projects, sometimes I’m deprived of sleep because of work log.
We lead a hectic busy life so when I feel empty and in need of a free fresh mind I go to the park. Nature always help me to unwind from all the chaos. I love connecting with nature , the greens, the breeze and music from the birds, the environment keeps me sane. My name is “Kcrazy Tee” because I am insanely gifted, my talents are God given and they drive people crazy. When my mental health is well taken care of, I become more creative and productive.
What are your long-term goals and aspirations in the entertainment industry? Are there any particular projects or collaborations you're excited about pursuing in the future?
How do you envision your career evolving in the coming years, and what legacy do you hope to leave behind?
Everything can be achieved as long as it’s wished for, worked for and fought for. My goal and aspiration in life is to become one of the best broadcasters to ever come from Africa. I plan on achieving my goal by maintaining a consistent plan. I am also planning on rebranding my film company into a successful media company that assist artists and other companies with brand strategizing and content production. I am working on a movie produced for Botswana film industry. The film features both South African and Botswana mainstream Stars like Carol Behane[ Zone 14/ The river]. I was approached by VEB Entertainment to script write one of their stories, it took a lot of research but the story finally got knitted together beautifully. There is also a documentary on the way; “Life of a lay Bhinca” Produced by Sunrise Emandlena headed by Thando Shozi, former Head Of Factual at the SABC for 27 years. I am part of the production team, I am quite hands-on , on this production from office to the shooting field work. I recently joined a touring company, Florence Tours, which aligns with my love for travelling and pursuing my dream of being a travelling vlogger, I am looking forward to travelling the world learning new cultures, having different traditional cuisines , meeting new people and do all the good things travellers do.
I have no doubt that one day I will take over the entertainment industry by storm. It is a strong feeling within me that I can’t ignore. I just want to free my mind and let art take me to the many different things I can do to make any of my arts forms a legacy. I want my company to benefit the next generation to come. The future generation should look at my body of work and be reminded of our values, aesthetic and culture. My work should be written in the books of history.
Closing:
Is there anything else you'd like to share about your journey, experiences, or advice for aspiring artists and performers?
My lifestyle is out of the ordinary, and I tend to derive inspiration from what others don’t see. There is no question about it, my work is everything to me. I don’t know if this is right according to society standards but I have a comfort zone, a place where I feel most comfortable to be creative, my surrounding influences my mood. How can I not mention love?...love is a center of all beautiful / healing creation, I draw most of my energy from my loved ones and prayer. We are absolutely nothing without prayer and meditation, I constantly have to align my gift with the will of God in order to live a purposeful life. Sometimes procrastinating gets the best of me but I try to go back to the vision bored to remind myself why I started and where I am heading to< Remember sticking to the plan.
My advise to the aspiring artists regardless of the field: 5 Ps [ proper preparation prevents poor performance]. Don’t be afraid to fail, embrace it because you will learn and do better next time. Your present circumstances don’t determine where you can go, it’s just a starting point. Enjoy the ride while at it.
Thank you to my friend, Mokgadi[ I call her shereen] for a feature in Mokgadi Legacy magazine. Words cannot express how much you mean to me. Mokgadi Legacy magazine to the world!
