Why & How a Prothrombin Time Test is Performed? A prothrombin time (PT) test determines how long an individual’s blood plasma takes to clot. Prothrombin, also known as factor II, is one of several plasma proteins that are involved in clotting.

What is the Purpose of a Prothrombin Time Test? When an individual gets a cut and their blood vessel ruptures, blood platelets gather at the site of the wound. To stop the bleeding, they make a temporary plug. A set of 12 plasma proteins, or coagulation "factors," work together to form fibrin, which covers the wound, in order to create a strong blood clot.

If a doctor suspects a patient has a bleeding disorder, he or she may order a PT test to enable them to make a diagnosis. Even if the patient has no symptoms of a bleeding disorder, the doctor may recommend a prothrombin time test to ensure that blood clots normally before undergoing major surgery. How is the Prothrombin Time test Performed? The results of the test may be influenced by blood-thinning medication. The individual is recommended to inform their doctor about all prescription medications they use. The doctor will advise them if they should stop taking them before the test. There is no need to fast before a PT. A PT test will require the collection of the patient’s blood. This is an outpatient procedure that is usually done at a diagnostic lab. It only takes a few minutes and causes little to no discomfort. A laboratory specialist will combine chemicals into the blood to determine how long it takes for a clot to create.
