AFRICAN AMERICAN I HISTORY INITIATIVE

Throughout the month of June 2023, the Missouri Historical Society will be welcoming audiences of all ages to critically examine our local history and celebrate both Juneteenth and Black Music Month. All programs are FREE and will take place at the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park unless otherwise noted Visit mohistory.org/events for more details about the programs.

Learn about a local connection to a pioneer and formerly enslaved person, Clara Brown, through a musical presented by Mama Lisa and Fundisha Enterprises. Take a hip-hop workshop with the Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, enjoy a drum circle with an African djembe, and more.

Juneteenth Keynote: From New Orleans, to Galveston, to St. Louis, and Beyond

Join us for a riveting nine-generation family migration story Irom Texas to Missouri. Vanessa Slaughter, a native St. Louisan, will join Jim Vincent ot the St. Louis Atrican American History & Genealogy Society in a Sieside chat to trace her family’s legacy to Galveston, Texas, in the tSGOs. The Legend Singers Reunion Concert

Saturday, June 24 I 3:OO-4:ZOpm

Enjoy a live concert celebrating Black Music Month and 83 years of the Legend Singers’ continuous performance and preservation of African American folk music. The celebration will travel the Soul Train, honoring Black musicians and their music, from early slave songs to present day pop and hip-hop.

Bernie Hayes, curator of the Wolff Jazz Institute at Harris-Stowe State University, founder of the National Black Radio Mall of Fame, and author of rise Deolh of Block Radio’ The Story oiAmerico’s Black Podia Perso,,ol,t,es—A Personal Perspec five, will lead us in an evening of storytelling and story-gathering in the style of a live radio show. Special guests will include radio and jazz greats of the past 50 years. Arrive early for a special lappy-hour performance by soul singer Uvee Hayes in the Grand Hall.
