Publisher’s Words I started this magazine as a sampling to give the Black LGBT Community something to be truly OUT and PROUD. The In The Life Movement is one that empowers and encourages people of color to come out, stand up, and be counted.

Game Changers Issue 1

For decades, we’ve been mostly invisible in mainstream media and even LGBT media with few exceptions. But now with the on-set of the digital age, we must accept the absolute responsibility for controlling our images and our stories and our movement. Moguls In The Life is all about what makes us beautiful, out, proud and great! It is all about fully delivering on the promise of equality that the Civil Rights Movement ushered in for all. And even more so, it’s about having our seat at a table we own and control 100%. There are many stories to be told. Some are of the stereotypical kind. But there are numerous of the American Dream kind and we want you to know all about them. The In The Life Movement reflects upon the struggles, the trials, the accomplishments and the successes of Black LGBT people. And no one can tell it better than we can ourselves. Moguls In The Life Magazine is something we can freely share with our friends, our neighbors and our children and feel empowered by doing so.

Moguls In The Life Magazine

This Black Pride 2015 inaugural issue is all about The Game Changers. We’ve included some of the people, the movers, the tastemakers, the pioneers who are defying the odds and surpassing the obstacles; and they are doing so all while living their authentic lives. This issue in no way suggests that this is a complete list of who’s who. But it is the foundation for things to come….our beginning. If you are Out and Proud and want us to showcase your business, your company and your brand please contact us via social media @ MogulsInTheLife or email CEO.SSMediaGroup@ gmail.com and thank you for your love and support of 100% Independently Black owned media. WHO IS Dalila Ali Rajah Four words describe Dalila Ali Rajah and that’s Black Bisexual Hollywood Mogul…. Dalila Ali Rajah is a name that may not be commonly discussed at the proverbial gay water cooler, but very much should be. The person behind the name is undoubtedly a brilliant woman. She is an Actress, Published Writer, Mother, Community Advocate and the Brainchild, Host & Producer of the LGBT themed TV/Web Talk Series Cherry Bomb.

Game Changers Issue 1

Cherry Bomb is an adult natured talk show about women who love other women. Cherry Bomb features five women, including Rajah, discussing everything from first dates, to dinner with the parents, to introducing erotic toys in the bedroom. The show’s vibe is open sensuality so nothing is off limits. Raising the bar in the game once again, the multifaceted and gifted Dalila, has made numerous appearances on many highly rated television shows such as, New Girl, ER, Heart of Dixie and Grey’s Anatomy. This is coupled with film roles in “Chat Room”, “Secrets & Toys” and “She Wasn’t Last Night.” Rajah is a Spelman College Alum and holds an MFA from California Institute of the Arts. At the age of 25 Dalila’s male companion helped her come to grips with her sexuality and she came out as a bisexual woman; a “label” often shunned upon in the Black LGBT community.

Moguls In The Life Magazine

Since coming out, Rajah has used her success to be a vocal advocate for bridging the strong activism of the LGBT community by supporting movements to help eradicate homophobia specifically in the Black community. In 2010 she posed for the NOH8 Campaign, to further her cause. Today, Rajah keeps herself busy Producing, Acting and is a noted Life Coach. Dalila has been featured on numerous who’s who lists recognizing America’s LGBT Black women and out celebrities. 4

Power Plays

Danielle and Aisha Moodie-Mills Research by Katie Donovan and Words by Swan Simpson Danielle and Aisha Moodie-Mills are one of the most popular “go-to” couples in Washington D.C. The dynamic duo married in 2010, making history as the first lesbian wedding to be featured by Essence Magazine. But don’t let the quiet looking faces fool you, these strong and vocally independent women are OUT and LOUD and politically forward in their views and passions.

Moguls In The Life Magazine

The two met over ten years ago through a mutual friend and the connection was near instant. Although they are one of the most publicly known “gay couples” they still often find themselves “coming out” to new people they meet. This is mainly because both women appear to be “straight” and defy the common Black Lesbian stereotypes. Rather than being offended by society’s 6

assumptions and presumptions, the two have used it as fuel to build the POWERfulness behind their Brand Politini Media. Together they produce Politini, a popular radio show & webcast fusing style, politics and pop culture. The show is broadcast on blis. fm. Putting the power in the term power couple, the duo is “everyday busy” breaking barriers in D.C. The two have interviewed some of Hollywood’s biggest names and are using their power to influence LGBT policy and women’s issues on Capitol Hill. Aisha is a Senior Fellow at The Center for American Progress and Danielle is Advisor for LGBT Policy at The Center for American Progress. They most recently launched FIRE (Fighting Injustice to Reach Equality). Their mission is to

eliminate social, political, economic, and health disparities among LGBT people of color. They are also daily bloggers at Living, Loving, and Laboring Out Loud (http:// moodiemills.com/threelol) using social media to advocate on issues of race, lgbt stereotypes and injustice and inequality across the board. The blog expresses their views on what they tag to be The New All-American Family. Politini has also joined forces with The Griot and MSNBC. Aisha and Danielle have been featured as one of the Advocate’s Top 40-Under-40. And in 2014 they were recognized by Black Moguls Magazine as one of the 20 Most Powerful Women in Urban America.

Politics & Power Moves1st Openly Gay Black Federal Judge Appointed Judge Darrin P. Gayles & The Things That Make You Go Hmmm.

Moguls In The Life Magazine

President Barack Obama will undoubtedly go down in history for many American first(s). But one of his biggest power plays of 2014, was the Federal Judicial nomination of openly gay, Miami based Judge Darrin P. Gayles to the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida. This was definitely big news. Judge Gayles previously served as a Florida State Circuit Court Judge in the 11th Judicial Circuit prior to his nomination. He graduated from Howard University. And he obtained his Law Degree from George Washington University. 8

While all of this celebrating was happening in the “white” Gay media, I noticed the virtual non-existence of a “Black” gay media. AND I also wanted to know where the so called “traditional” Black media was hiding. Guess this was toomuch “other” Black history going down that did not have the usual Civil Rights & Church crowd sanctioning it. It was quiet as a church mouse on the usual scene. And even social media was a near whisper…. hmmm. The MOST interesting thing about Judge Gayles’ appointment was his approval in and of itself. His nomination was overwhelmingly approved 98-0. It was one of the few times that President Obama had put anything in front of the Senate that did not come back with drama. Let me put this in perspective for you ladies and gentlemen. This was a LANDMARK Senate confirmation. But

where oh where was the so called Black media? It is so important that we hold the entire community accountable for its continued homophobic, antigay and dismissive attitudes toward Black LGBT people. Not many traditional “Black” media outlets even took notice of this monumental moment. This lends to the rampant homophobia laced with racism that still controls what is newsworthy and what is worthy news to people of color in America. This move by President Barack Obama sets Judge Gayles up to be on track to potentially be the first Black openly gay Supreme Court Justice (at least a nominee). This is move is something to both laud and to be proud of.

RuPaul Rules Reality TV Words By Swan Simpson

Game Changers Issue 1

RuPaul Andre Charles has been a “super” role model for Black LGBT success in Entertainment ever since he blazed up the Billboard charts in 1993 with his mega hit single and video Supermodel (You Better Work!). The success of his music has made him one of the most recognizable faces and personalities in the world. Standing at a tall 6’4”, wearing heels, beat face and blonde hair, he is far too fabulous and talented to be reduced down to a simple “drag performer”. No,RuPaul is an institution, he is legendary. His music helped change the face of Black sexuality and propelled Black gay culture to the forefront of the American mainstream. RuPaulhas gone on to top the charts around the world….giving us all something to be out and proud about. But the hardest working openly Gay man in Entertainment did not stop there. In 1995 MAC Cosmetics made a bold move and signed the Legend making him undoubtedly the world’s first drag queen Supermodel & International Spokesperson. When he is not making music or representing incredible beauty Brands, RuPaul is making movies and numerous television appearances that solidify his long lasting career. The incredible Performer/Actor/TV Personality also lends his name and likeness to numerous causes especially those that increase awareness of HIV & AIDS related concerns. RuPaul has gone on to rule Reality TV as the star of his own selftitled show, RuPaul’s Drag Race. The show has aired on the LOGO cable network since 2009 and is now in its 7th Season. In 2013 the show became LOGO’s highest rated season Premier in network history. He recently tweeted about rumors surrounding his potential last days on the network as haters always like to dish a little dirt with their Black tea….“Trust! @ LogoTV hasn’t “distanced” itself from me, not while I’m still payin’ the f%kin’ light bill over there.” I would imagine that kind of genius response can only come from a Mogul who has built his career on an unshakeable foundation.

Culture The Curious Case of Black Lesbians in MediaPublisher’s Perspective

When I arrived in Atlanta in 1988 it was being packaged and sold as two different types of Meccas. First, the obvious was the Black Mecca. I will not offer my thoughts and research on that phenomenon in this particular article, but it was indeed a sell. Next, Atlanta was being packaged and sold as the Black Gay Mecca. Every Tom with a dick that was hairy was running, moving and u-hauling it to the dirty south. Our hopes, dreams, fantasies and one night stands were all waiting for our arrival in Atlanta. Black gay men had their clubs, social circles, restaurant scene (although very integrated), books, magazines, role models, seats at the table and enough action to go around so that everyone could be a mistress or the other man however it was to go. Black Lesbians on the other hand, were missing in action, in movement and in numbers other than the majority who were in the closet and came out to the carefully tucked away clubs and sistah girl groups meeting at someone’s home. Fast forward to 2015, you have to ask what has time, social media, marriage equality and Hollywood done to us and for us specifically as a community of women?

Where’s Waldo?

Moguls In The Life Magazine

Some say we are sneaking. Well, this cannot be true because the lines at the club are wrapped around the building out in plain view for all to see. Some say we are still in the proverbial closet. I would even question that because we have numerous so called role models and bold examples of all kinds of Black women who sing, shout, lead, chant, legislate, rap; and proclaim through their ruggedness, their pretty tomboy swag and/or their femininity that they are Lesbian and proud. I say we are hidden. Hidden from the mainstream and given a seat at the back of the bus until such a time that may we become useful to someone with money. And that someone is Hollywood.

Black Gay Men Welcomed: All Else Need Not Apply

Only in Hollywood can a “real-life” television Megastar who is an actual OUT Black Lesbian (Raven-Symone), be hired to play the role of a straight baby momma whose romantic interest is actually an openly Gay Black man (Empire). Let it be said that Lee Daniels is the openly gay Producer of Empire. And he uses his 60 minutes of fame to reconcile Hollywood’s portrayal of Black men and Black gay men in particular in media. And thank you Lee Daniels for giving us a square to spare. But my question is simply this…. does Hollywood have a “beef” with Black Gay 14

women? Or is Black Lesbian life just not that interesting to other Lesbians or anybody else in general? How come we ain’t got no shows?

#BlackLesbianTRUTH

In 2003, I produced a low-budget, none Oscar worthy movie called Angel Bliss about the life of three close Black Lesbian friends who were all from the “right side of the track”. It was the making of media for and about “upscale” Black Lesbian life pre-LWord days. It was low budget, it did not contain high production values as it was experimental and shot with a $300 camcorder purchased at Circuit City post-Blair Witch Hunt. Since no one wanted to buy the script, I had to prove my point by doing the film out of pocket myself. But I knew exactly what I was doing. After several local screenings in the Black Gay Mecca and some real Hollywood hustle, I got a distribution deal for the film from York Entertainment, who at the time, was the largest Distributor of Urban Direct to Video Movies in the World. So, in spite of critics, Angel Bliss became the first known model from a widely distributed film that laid the framework for defying Black Lesbian stereotypes in media. The characters were Harvard educated, lived well, did not portray the typical stud/fem “look”, but had the same problems as regular folks. Instead of it being lauded for its surprisingly monumental success, it was “shitted on” by Black Lesbians, yet purchased in droves by straight men and others who wanted to see two attractive women “together” in an intentionally drawn out love making scene that starts out in a hot tub and ends up in the bedroom. The sex scene is what sold the movie. But I knew that going in. It was not my production values. It was my entertainment value. And in this case, a movie made for, by and about Black Lesbians, that was never meant to be seen by Black Lesbians because they hate themselves too much to support anything that goes outside the grid. So, my film became entertainment for straight men.

We Appear To Be Grown, But Aging In Reverse

Yes, Hollywood and men love to watch “two women” get it on. Even homophobic Lucious Lyon from the TV series, Empire, approves of two women getting it on. But what do Black

Moguls In The Life Magazine

Lesbians truly want from the media images portraying our lives? I can mention a number of Black Lesbian critically acclaimed films. Many of which contain that one sided stereotype of Black Lesbian life. A number of these films address the mental and physical traumas of growing up Black and Lesbian in a religious home life. As for TV shows, most are acceptable when they are laced with interracial relationships as opposed to a healthy Black on Black female love. And Reality TV mostly takes us to the gutter. And I will admit with Reality TV, sometimes I just cannot change the channel.

Nobody (White) Is Ready For Black Lesbian Life on TV

So, this leads me to the rising popularity of a number of web based series such as Between Women. These independent series are written, performed and produced predominantly by all Black Producers and Casts.

The conclusion from some of my conversations in Hollywood circles about Black Lesbian audiences sings like a Chris Brown song….these h***ain’t loyal…..not a committed audience. There was a post online where a young lady gave her feelings about Between Women, Studville TV and many others. In essence, she said that regardless of the production values or its content, the lack of Black Lesbian images in media and Entertainment means that we need to support anyone who throws us a bone. At least they are giving us something. And we owe that effort our support. Do you agree? I’d like your feedback on that notion.

Game Changers Issue 1

The fact of the matter is some of us just want to be entertained, but at a level that shows our progress as a community of people with common bonds….our Blackness and our sexuality. A little Black Lesbian diversity if you will….grown folks TV. But because we are so truly absent from the mainstream, we are just happy to accept whatever crumbs we can get.

Between Women seems to have the right formula based on numbers. Their depiction of Lesbian life is fairly upgraded compared to some of the more stereotypical series on youtube and the like. The show plays to our diversity as women loving women and for this I applaud Michelle A. Daniel and Christina Brown. And even with its popularity, it is still a life that does not seem to be something that mainstream America really wants beaming on their TV set (yeah TV set).

How Do We Solve This Problem

Even with 700,000 + youtube views an episode, a strong consistent following and extreme popularity; no one in Hollywood is knocking down the door to make these shows official network series with the dollars to back it up.

We will Publish your thoughts and feedback in the next quarterly issue of Moguls In The Life Magazine. Thank you for supporting 100% Community Owned Media that supports you.

15

www.InTheLifeMagazine.com

The rising popularity of these web types of series has propelled their performers into cult success with some of them commanding personal appearance fees in the 4 digits. Not bad for shows that have yet to produce significant revenue for the actual Producers and Writers themselves as they are still trying to monetize their way online.

Do Black Lesbians have an image problem? Or does Hollywood have penis envy? Isn’t it time that our images grow up and reflect our diversity as a community of Black Lesbian women or is anything other than the stereotypical stud/fem imagery considered selling out and unrealistic? Do Black Lesbians have commitment issues when it comes to the long term supportof other Black Lesbians? And have socioeconomic factors and way too many college degrees caused us to be so critical that we cannot be entertained?

MILLIONAIRE LIFE CLASS

-Ciara Game Changers Issue 1

Who else besides Ciara can pull off that pretty tom boy swag?? She is the original pretty tom boy and an icon of a performer who has built a large fan base amongst LGBT women.

Moguls In The Life Magazine

Ciara had been off the music scene for the past few years, but has come back with a vengeance since May 2015. Her sixth studio album, Jackie, was released and the Performer has been making appearances everywhere including The View.

by Swan Simpson

16

We managed to get some words of advice from Ciara to share with our Readers. The most amazing fact about her life and career is that this young legend is still not quite 30 years old. And yet, she has sold more than 7 million records in her decade long career in Music. She’s also a master choreographer and largely known for her edgy music videos that show her gender bending one moment and ultra fem in the next. That is some sexy stuff that drives her fans over the edge.

Moguls In The Life Magazine

Her latest album release, Jackie; is named after her Mother and is in celebration of her own young motherhood with her most recent ex-mate. The sexy singer and dancer arrived on the planet from Scorpio energy being born October 25th and seems to be the epitome of the things this zodiac represents. Her passion shows in her work and her music. She gives a stellar, high energy performance on stage. And she still manages to be very authentic and approachable as a person. Not letting the fame success go to her head too easily. Her advice as a young Millionaire living her dreams is short, sweet and genuine. She simply says, “As we get older, it’s important for us to help hand back some of what we’ve gained as we’ve grown older. It should be one of your responsibilities - it’s almost like being a mentor.” She thinks of herself as a Mentor for those wanting to learn from her successful blueprint. With all of the ups and downs of the Music Industry, what’s your best advice to someone wanting to follow in your footsteps?

Game Changers Issue 1

“Remind yourself that when things don’t go right, everything will be OK. And if you think that, then everything will be.” A lot of people view you as being very powerful. Your personality is so on point and pleasant. So, is it beauty flowing through or just plain confidence? “Being beautiful is all in the attitude, it’s about confidence.” Ciara has thoughts on a number of current events, subjects and her twitter beef with an ex. But it seems with the space that she is in, she doesn’t care to waste the energy on matters that bring out the worst in people. As for 2015 being the year of the Woman. We want to know are women Presidential? “Don’t limit yourself because you are a woman because you can do exactly the same that a guy could do.”

www.InTheLifeMagazine.com

A good workout, kind words and thoughts, cleansing your space of negativity are all pieces of advice she gives to those chasing their dreams and grinding towards success. Her work ethic and passion are what has driven her entire youthful career. So, bring your “A” game always. Final advice and thoughts….. “Education is everything. Education is your power, education is your way in life for whatever you want to do.”
