Tarik Currimbhoy’s artistic practice is as diversified as is his cultural and educational background. Born and growing up in India, he studied in the United States, gathering a number of advanced degrees in art, architecture and design from the most prestigious institutions. Having established himself as a renowned architect of large building projects, both in United States and in India, he now allows himself to pay increasing attention to his sculptural oeuvre, an everlasting interest and passion of his.
Some of his earlier works such as Ellipse , 2008, or Raincatcher , 2005, are small architectural gems exploring basic rules and tenets of architecture – that of the careful organization of structural elements resting on top of one another in a perfect recognition of scale and weight, creating a balanced unit secured by compression of its very own components.
While the majority of the artist’s sculptures are generally smaller in scale they are based on the structural logic employed in large construction. This also implies the possibility of translation into a larger installation pieces, such as the Twist, 2016, a monumental 4,000 pound metal sculpture installed in a school in Western India.
The unique feature of Currimbhoy’s sculptures is their gentle swaying movement, orchestrated by the artist with almost magical results. Utilizing the knowledge of the essential rules of engineering, Tarik is able to accurately calculate the scale and weight of materials used in each individual work, to make it move with the measured pendulum movement while it is resting securely on a desired point. Moving as if responding to the invisible forces, the pieces are actually reacting to a gentle probing of hand to begin their mesmerizing movement that slowly exhausts itself and brings the pieces back to the original stasis.
TARIK CURRIMBHOY
(b. 1954)
Classically trained in the arts, industrial design, and architecture, Tarik Currimbhoy is a trifecta of artistic prowess. Having earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master of Architecture from the Pratt Institute, as well as a Master of Arts from Cornell University, Tarik later went on to teach at both institutions (Drawing at Cornell and Design at Pratt).
In both architecture and sculpture, Tarik searches for tranquility, simplicity and tactility, expressed in purity of both form and material. Inspired by ancient architecture of building blocks resting on each other in tension and compression, Tarik’s sculptures are “stories of structure and gravity”, held together under compression in stone and metal.
Tarik has mastered the juxtaposition of the old and the new, using handcrafting and ancient casting techniques to create sculptures that are modern and minimal in form. His design work has been published internationally and his sculptures may be found across the world in public spaces as well as corporate and private collections.
